How Would You Do Your Wedding Hair?

Earlier this year, we featured three women’s wedding hairstyles. We felt so inspired (that rose updo!) that we decided to talk to three more brides about their stunning looks…

Sleek Ponytail

“While searching online for hair inspiration, I saw lots of buns and updos, but I wanted something modern and sleek,” says Sheila Hoang (remember her joyful proposal story?), a strategy designer in Dallas. “Then, on Instagram, I saw a Chinese bride, who’d wrapped red thread around her ponytail. I thought it was so cool. After that, I kept noticing runway photos from Asian designers who had their models wearing low ponytails with ribbons or leather tied at the base. I asked my hair stylist to replicate the look with elastic silver string.”

“I love how whenever I turned around, people could see my hair flowing down my back. When my husband, Denzell, saw me, he said ‘Oh, my god, you look GQ!’, which was his way of saying I should be in Vogue. I started laughing because I’d never seen him react that way to any outfit before!”

Side-Swept Curls

“As a girl with stick-straight Asian hair, I’d always dreamed of having big curls,” says cookbook author Molly Yeh. “Once my hair was curled, we pulled back the front pieces so that it would stay in place while I danced the hora.”

Wedding Hair Side-Swept Curls with a Front Twist

“When I went for my hair trial before my wedding, we did a big curly ponytail. But I felt like my hair was destined for another style. So, going into the wedding day, I was flying blind, but I trusted my hair stylist. She created my exact vision — it felt special without being fussy, and wearing my hair down helped me stay warm during a snowy Minnesota wedding.”

Old-Hollywood Glamour Waves

“On my wedding day, I wanted to to look like myself but more,” says Philadelphia-based author Emma Copley Eisenberg of house tour fame. “I have a cowlick that prevents me from wearing a middle part, so I went with a side part, which reminded me of old Hollywood glamour.”

“My wedding dress was simple, so I wanted my hairstyle to be simple.”

Wedding hair shoulder length glamour curls

“My hair was swept up and out of my face — I’m a big cryer, and I needed a hairstyle that wouldn’t be disturbed by my big feelings!”

What hairstyle would you want to wear on your wedding? If you’re married, would you still choose the hairstyle you wore?

P.S. How to crush at officiating a wedding, and a beautiful beach proposal.

I have alopecia, so my big “wedding hair” decision was choosing to wear a flower crown instead of carrying a bouquet, and I loved it!

My hair is my favorite thing about me — it’s a red that lives somewhere between orange & strawberry blonde. It really depends on the time of year & lighting. So on our wedding day, i just wanted my hair to be featured. I had big barrel curls & a little wax flower crown i made from Trader Joe’s. It was absolutely wonderful & my friend did it for me, so it was even better than going to a salon. Like Emma, i wanted to be me, but *bridal*.

Former Glenview, Illinois resident thrilled to see Molly Yeh featured. Check her out…gorgeous, musically talented, chef extraordinaire and very interesting background and life now. Yay Molly, cheering you on.

Katy

Can someone please cast Sheila and Denzell in a Jane Austen movie already? That shot of them outdoors is pure cinema.

Sheila

We would love to be casted and then I can finally run in a meadow in a big dress like I’ve always wanted! 😆

Nicole

I did my own hair for my wedding (budget!). I bought a pretty beaded headpiece off Etsy that wrapped around and tied underneath with a ribbon. I tucked/rolled my hair into the ribbon for the ceremony, then I took it off for the reception and had big, wild curls for dancing!

Amanda

mine was beyond simple .. I never even looked at options before.. I went in to a new place I had never been before and said.. hey, I am getting married today, can you do something simple and out of my face? My hair is wavy and at the time above my shoulders.. they basically curled it a bit and pined it half back.. perfect!

Lucy

Sheila and Denzell!!! Aaawwwww!!! I wish them the best!!

Sheila

So sweet, thank you Lucy!

Anna

Requesting a beauty uniform or week of outfits post for Molly Yeh please. She is so fun and stylish and talented!

Amy

I’ll second this – and a house tour!!!

Our beautiful world

The hair is gorgeous, but the dresses! stunning!

When I was a teenager, I was rifling through boxes in my grandparents’ basement and stumbled upon a delicate headpiece made of tiny pearls. I asked my grandmother about it and she said she wore it at her wedding, then promptly said to me “it’s yours now!” I was so awkward about it, never even having a boyfriend up until that point of my life, but my grandmother insisted. About 15 years later, I wore it at my wedding, and I think my grandmother recognized it even through her dementia. My husband lovingly calls it my “wedding hat”, and it remains one of my favorite things about our wedding. This year I passed it to my younger cousin who will wear it for her wedding next year, and I’m so happy the “wedding hat” gets another go.

Katy

I love this!

Neh

Please please please can we know all about their wedding dresses!! All the three of them are absolutely stunning!

I remember Sheila and Denzel’s super cute engagement story so it’s extra awesome to see their wedding pics. They both look amazing!!! GQ indeed!!!

Oh boy. WE got married in 2010, and I wore a sleek silk bias cut gown with an open back. I did a practice hair-do session with my stylist, and she nailed it. Low and loose side bun. Then the day of, I went to get it done but forgot to bring photos. All went well until I went to see my mom who was getting a blow out on the other side of the room. She looks at me and says, “Pretty! Love the funky zig-zag part!” I looked in the mirror and saw an awful zig-zag part a la 1998. But I was too shy to ask the stylist to redo it and just pretended not to care. It was fine, the wedding was perfect, I was in heaven. But I still look at the pics and see that zig-zag and wish I could have told that young person to stand up for herself.

I grew my hair out to my elbows, asked my hairdresser to put it up in a classic bun. Little did I know she put it in a ponytail, then proceeded to create a bunch of tiny braids, then wrap the around and around to create the bun. Apparently she used a ton of hair pins because at the end of the night my husband had to help me undo all the pins (nearly 30!), and then loosen all the little braids- I had such fluffy hair sticking out like static electricity. It was gorgeous but too bad hardly anyone knew because my veil covered it most of the time, and hilarious at the end there.

We both wore red for our wedding, so I put my hair into a bun with a red scrunchie, used little plastic butterfly clips to clip tulle from the craft store to it for a veil. I bunched up a thicker tulle underneath and had a finer one for the very long veil. I did it myself and it cost maybe $10. I was madly in love and full of joy, and that was plenty of beauty to bring to the day. I didn’t fuss about how it was going to look forever after because the point was that we were getting married, not what we looked like when we got married. We chose not to take video. We had a friend take photos. We left disposable cameras around for folks to use. It was wonderful, didn’t break the bank, and made the day about our love and the spiritual event that was taking place. No regrets!

For my wedding, I was insistent about looking like myself. I’ve seen folks I know have their makeup and hair done who end up looking great but also a little uncanny valley, where they don’t look completely themselves. Also, we were on a major budget. So the plan was to do my own makeup, and I decided to splurge on a blow out for my hair. After helping to set up our wedding spot, I ran to a blow-out bar, where I think they had not fully trained the stylist, who seemed very lost. My hair ended up looking very limp and sad, which eventually ALSO became frizzy as I had to run to the bank to pick up change for our loonie bar (Canada!). So I ran home to do my make-up, and ended up hurriedly putting my hair in hot rollers and dousing it in hairspray. And guess what? It ended up fabulous! My hair and make-up were like an elevated version of my usual dress-up style, and I got so many compliments (to paraphrase a good friend: being a bride is great. You are surrounded by people you love telling you how good you look). Oddly, it felt like the blowout disaster ended up giving a little ‘oomph’ to my hair, even though it didn’t work out. My usual advice for future brides: don’t let seemingly disasters stress you out – it’s just a party (I told my partner the night before our wedding that I wasn’t stressed, and had the mantra that if there was a disaster with the food, for example, we could just order pizza and it would still be great).

One of the best things about having a short, straight bob is that there isn’t much I can do with it (aside from making it extra shiny!). For my wedding last November, it was one less appearance-related decision I had to make, and I never worried about not looking or feeling like myself. All I added was a long mantilla veil trimmed with the most delicate chantilly lace, and I let the bob do its thing.

Julie

I just wanted to yell about how great every photo is.

Heatther

I’m getting married in about a month and I’ve been dithering about earrings and I LOVE Shannon’s! I wonder if she might be willing to share where they’re from?

Greta

We were in lockdown, so I had a buzz cut, and that, my friends, is how you wind up getting married in a hat. That said, the hat was my favorite part of the wedding attire–I ordered a white straw one (medium tall crown, medium brim) and trimmed it with a blue ribbon, as my dress had blue embroidery; then I added a small fingertip veil with two small brooches shaped like bluebirds. I could imagine giving away my wedding dress, but that hat will be with me forever.

Malory

We had a tiny wedding in Iceland with just close family and friends. I had spent a full year learning how to do my own hair and makeup and was really please with the results! Our ceremony and dinner were schedule for the afternoon/evening, so we had the entire day with out photographers shooting in different locations. In our third location, we got extremely close to a waterfall and I got completely soaked! The photographers kept telling me not to worry because we were going back to the cabin for the “getting ready” shots. I wasn’t worried at all! My hair dried naturally and I didn’t bother to re-do it! The pictures of us escaping the waterfall and laughing are some of my favorite shots of the day!

JAK

For both our civil ceremony and our cultural wedding ceremony I had my hair loosely curled and then pulled half up, what made the looks completely different was the hair accessories I wore for both. For the civil ceremony I had my hairstylist weave a string of pearls (on a long wire that my mom made) in my hair, so it was like a headband of sorts. And for second wedding I wore a custom Juliet cap veil with pearls dotting the fabric that I pulled over my forehead, it was ethereal and harkened back to the 1920s too. I’m still a bit sad I’ll never get to wear my veil again. Both looks really suited me and made me feel like my truest self…. which is exactly the advice I’d give anyone who is planning their wedding look, go for the outfit, makeup, and hairstyle that feels like your true essence!

Sarah

I had a low, sleek offset bun for my wedding in 2012. Which was a *very* early 2010s style. I still like it but I would definitely do things a little different. I have naturally curly hair and I wish I would have known then what I know now about styling and caring for my hair. I would still do a low bun but definitely keep my hair curly. I love hair up or back or a wedding to see the bride’s beautiful face!

Katy

I have naturally very curly hair and that was my one requirement – we were NOT going to be blow drying it smooth, just to recurl it. My hairdresser lightly diffused it and made an updo that actually looked like me. :)

I had my sister craft my hair into a bun in the morning with some product so that by the afternoon it would look nice when I took it down. I wanted us all to jump into the sea for legit beach wave hair but i think most of my girlfriends instead piled into my sister’s bathroom with various tools and tactics to get pretty, loose locks. It was raining and breezy the minutes leading up to the ceremony on the beach anyways- in so many of the photos our hair is whipping all around and I love it! By the time I walked down the aisle, the sun came out and it was a perfect evening. Everyone had frizzy, lovely, happy hair. This photo is still one of my all time favorites! https://www.instagram.com/p/BmFFoB-AW2gSpN7GblGiMwCmf1zRzT8WEheIF00/

your account is set to private so, unfortunately, we can’t see your lovely, happy hair.

Mona

I think I will go with a simple high bun when the time comes as it contrasts well with fancy embroidered asian wedding clothes. I really like the pony here as an idea too.

Marina

I have wavy/curly hair and when I want to feel polished I always blow dry it or do waves with a curling iron. I’ve noticed that people with curly hair straighten it to feel sleek but people with straight hair curl it to feel fancy (obviously not everyone but in general it seems). For my wedding I did half up (curling iron waves) it was SO humid & rained that by the end it was pretty frizzy but I didn’t care!

Michaela

Emma your dress is one of the most beautiful wedding dresses I have seen. It looks so classy and comfortable and is just perfect. I’m obsessed!

Karen

co-signed, Michaela!!

bella

Sheila’s dress is stunning and I love her pony tail wrap. Molly Yeh, so gorgeous. And I love the star earrings Emma wore. All three beautiful. Molly’s hair was my favorite. Looks very ‘wedding’, but NOT an updo. Perfect.

Kathryn

Came here also to say how gorgeous Emma’s earrings were on her against her waves!

Hannah

I too came here to say those star earrings are especially lovely with Emma’s hair and dress. Might she share where they’re from?
