What Small, Inexpensive Things Make Your Life Better?

Do you have a random hero object at home? Sometimes the small, un-sexy purchases — a kitchen timer, dimmer switches — are the ones that make the biggest difference. Here are our seven answers, and we’d love to hear yours…

Joanna Goddard, founder and editor:

Loop ear plugs
“I’m one of those people who can find small noises — cracking knuckles, jingling keys, an unexpected sneeze — pretty unbearable, especially if I’m trying to focus. Toby once sweetly told me he’d drink water in the other room since it was my birthday. (Aww, sorry, guys!) But, these days, I wear Loop earplugs while working from home, and they really work. (They also save me on planes and trains.) The good part is, you can still hear conversation; they just cut out that pesky background noise.”

Back-up batteries
“It seems simple, but one thing that saves me so much stress is having back-up packs of every kind of battery we use at home. That way, when the smoke detector starts chirping in the middle of the night, or the alarm clock or TV remote dies at an inopportune time, I never worry about whether or not we have replacements. I even keep the little coin batteries that go in our car’s key fob.”

Long lighters
“I spent four decades burning my fingers while lighting birthday candles and reaching into votive holders, until Freddie noticed one day and bought me a multi-purpose lighter. What a game changer! Why did I wait so long???”

Paring-knife set
“Now that I’m the only adult in the house and almost cook dinner every night, I really appreciate the set of four paring knives that my cousin gave me. I always have a clean one ready for chopping onions, slicing apples, or cutting a chicken into pieces.”

Vacation air freshener
“It’s no secret that I love the smell of Vacation sunscreen (I’m “always banging on about it,” as my English aunt would say), and their car air fresheners are wonderful. They smell of coconut and beaches, which is pleasant even (especially?) in the fall and winter. And while the fragrance isn’t overpowering, it is enough to mask any lingering scent of the boys’ discarded socks and forgotten banana peels. (I once found a peel so old that it CRACKED IT IN HALF.)”

Plus, three more from our editors…

Kaitlyn Teer, senior editor
Clip-on reading light
“Our kids share a room, and clip-on lights are the perfect bunk-bed lighting solution. Now my daughter can stay up reading without disturbing her little brother’s sleep.”

Jannelle Sanchez, senior editor
Magnetic hooks
“These little hooks are the size of a quarter, but can hold up to 30 pounds! My husband uses them to hold tools in the garage, and I use them on the garage door to hang fun birthday banners for our kids.”

Alison Piepmeyer, partnerships director
Foldable tote
“I picked up a Baby Baggu a few years ago, and I never leave home without it. It stays stashed in my purse, and I use it every single day, for a million different things: library books, groceries, muddy clothes, and all the random rocks my kids demand to bring home.”

What little everyday things do you swear by? We’d love to hear.

P.S. Five more inexpensive things that make life easier, and Joanna’s five holy-grail beauty products.

– Tweezerman tweezers in the car where the light is good and the mirror can be angled just right. – Wide shallow bowls for pasta (and salads and other things too) that just make eating it that much more pleasurable for some reason. – Rechargeable book light for reading while my partner sleeps and for airplanes when you feel like a jerk with the overhead light on.

Amy MC

Electric egg cooker – so easy and quick to make boiled eggs to your preferred hardness. Such a good healthy snack and now I eat more of them! Also a little pack of glow in the dark stars to stick on the furniture around my baby’s nursery so when the black out blinds are down and I’m rocking her at night, I don’t bump into anything in my sleepy state.

BAG BALM. That is all.

Beth

This is my favorite post! The tub shroom (I have 2 so I can switch out mid-shower) https://www.tubshroom.com Metal gloves for grating (This is going to be what everyone gets for Xmas this year) these have saved my knuckles so many times https://www.cabelas.com/p/cabelas-cut-glove Mini re-fillable condiment bottles (for camping!) https://www.target.com/p/snaplock-2-condiment-bottles/-/A-93699732#lnk=sametab Banana saver for lunches https://www.bananasaver.com/ Plastic bag dryer for re-using ziplock bags https://www.target.com/p/lehman-s-economical-and-eco-friendly-wooden-8-arm-bag-holder-and-bottle-dryer/-/A-92549748 Cup holder expander for car https://www.target.com/p/maison-products-car-cup-holder-car-cup-holder-expander-with-adjustable-base-matte-black/-/A-92959319 Kitchen towels with a built-in hole so they loop on the oven bar and don’t fall off Velvet hangers for the closet

In the category of non essential but life improving items, I vote for a 4 cup glass measuring cup. You can melt butter in it, often can mix all wet ingredients in it, fits in the dishwasher easily, I love it! I don’t know why I waited until I was almost fifty to get one.

Eva

I’ve actually been considering one of these! I just got a “shot glass” style measuring cup that replaces measuring spoons for ease, and it’s a game-changer.

Justine

Love this! Ditto the 8-cup glass Pyrex measurer, particularly for breakfast casserole (10 eggs + 1 c half & half fit perfectly and is easily measured/whisked) and brining chicken (4 c water, 1/4 c salt whisked til dissolved, then a bunch of chicken parts in).

Robin

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good bedside light for reading, preferably a plug in sconce? My kids have the ikea ones above but the clip part broke almost immediately. They’re also super bright so I find I have to point them at the wall to dim them a little for nighttime. I saw someone recommended a red light one but ideally I’m hoping for something a little less industrial. Bonus points if it’s available in Canada :)

Meghan

I got my kid this task lamp that has a clamp base so you can screw it onto things. You can change the brightness and warmth. Only potential negative is it might be too large for your purposes! https://amzn.to/4yNFp68

Sofia

Yes! Rise Wall Lamp, Normann Copenhagen https://www.finnishdesignshop.com/en-us/product/rise-wall-lamp-white

Phoebe

-eye mask with headphones built in – lc dolida or something on amazon – amazing for listening to things while falling asleep -a carafe with cup that fits on top for keeping by bed -ikea makes these magical clips in a huge multipack for $2 or something that are perfect for closing plastic bags, esp great in freezer, like plastic bags of frozen peas IKEA also sells silicone round soft lid things that fit over the top of bowls, to put in fridge. Powdered unsweetened matcha sachets from trader joes (and instant coffee) in my bag because who wants to spend $8 on a drink anymore and you can always get ice and water from somewhere to make your own. Muji pens and notebooks, so cheap and so excellent. Illiyoon ato gel or cream, Korean face moisturizer that comes in a big container, is great, I buy in bulk from stylevana and it goes a long way, plus has clean ingredients. Community acupuncture – sliding scale as you do it in a room with other people, very affordable. And it WORKS MAGIC. Trader joes pound plus dark chocolate bars OBVIOUSLY Also, hair cutting scissors and a couple YouTube hair cutting tutorials. If you have med-long hair, look up how to cut a wolf cut – it’s foolproof. You put your hair in a ponytail on the top of your head and cut across, that is IT, and it comes out literally fantastic and weirdly looks great on everyone. Idk about super curly/textured hair though. But I’m never going to a salon again. I cut my male partners hair now too after watching a video or two, it’s easier than you think -insight timer app meditations (free!!) -a nice coffee is always a similar price pretty much no matter where you go, so while traveling I love getting a coffee at a super gorgeous hotel and soaking in the atmosphere, using a really nice bathroom, etc.

Sharon

so impressed you can cut a wolf cut! going online to see if I can learn as well, mostly because I wholeheartedly agree with all of your other recommendations!

Jessica

I grew up with not a lot–things like hair elastics, chapstick, tape, pens, pencils, working markers, scissors, were always in short supply and it stressed my mom out to buy them AGAIN. It feels so lovely and luxurious to have many pairs of scissors, piles of hair elastics, a drawer of Costco tape, and new sets of markers when they get dry. I try very hard not to be wasteful, but abudant supplies is my kryptonite.

Barb

I recently bought double of all my toiletries and make up (including toothbrush and razor) for storage in my travel bag. Now I don’t have to pack and unpack it when I travel for work, which is about once a month. Who knew that having 2 razors could save so much mental stress!?

Sarah

I actually do it with all household items and it saves me so much time!

Mollie

I keep meaning to do this for my all my kids’ sleep gear, toothbrushes, etc. for when we travel.

Lesley

Definitely my tiny pot scraper, so useful to cleaning pots but also on caked on maple syrup on the table, etc. Libby app is another one- totally free and I can peruse most magazines that I love at my leisure. No $ and no paper to recycle. I ❤️ libraries. When my kids were younger I kept a wicker basket of socks in the front porch, as they were forever needing to go back upstairs for socks- total game changer in the morning.

Nicole

an electric can opener and cloth napkins

Elizabeth

I’ve lived in my beloved 1BR for about 14 years and never had a wastebasket in my bedroom until last month! It seemed silly with my bathroom and kitchen just a few feet away, but I finally bought a small wooden wastebasket for my bedroom and cannot believe I lived without it for so long. Now I’ve gotten a tiny one for my “office” (a corner of my living room) as well. I am rejoicing as if I invented wastebaskets, which I know I did not, but it’s been such a good life upgrade! Joy was not meant to be a crumb, people!

Lori

Electric corkscrew… I’m sure this offends some but after too many frustrating incidents where I couldn’t get wine bottles open with the myriad of devices in the drawer, this one has never let me down. Built in foil cutter, great red color and soooo easy to use!

Alli

Menstrual cup, every time.

Samantha O

100%! I switched to a menstrual cup 18 years ago and have never looked back. Life- changing

sarah

do you have a rec of which one? i just tried switching to one and i am not the biggest fan, but maybe it’s just the one i bought!

Maya

Yes!!! For me, the “discs” work better postpartum. I use a flex disc.

Catherine

For me, it’s a menstrual disc! I can’t wear pads or tampons and the cups don’t work for me (alas), but a reusable Flo disc is so comfortable and easy that I wish I’d discovered it years ago. They have disposable discs too. Twelve hours at a time of not thinking about my period! Unreal!

Anon

I’ve tried a few cups and discs over the years, and finally found a good match with the Honeypot cup. (I eventually cut the stem off, but it’s useful for beginners.)

Olivia Jane

Another vote for the menstrual DISC! I once accidentally dislodged my IUD with the cup, so…never again. The disc is so comfortable my biggest problem is I’m always afraid I’ll forget about it

Emma

For me hormonal birth control so I don’t deal with periods at all. Very personal but works well for me!

Barbara

100% i have a disc for everday use but switch to a cup when working out, both from saalt. pair that with a pack of knix period undies i bought at Costco and I have 100% solved period messes. which is great after almost 3 decades of it!

Nina

Maldon salt! Salt is so cheap that you can have the fancier ‘chef-y’ version of it and it’s still cheap. My grandmother was so surprised by how much better it tastes when I got her some in her late 80s, after a lifetime of using bog-standard table salt. Regarding those coin/ button batteries – please just remember that they are a horrifying danger to small children, not just as a basic choke hazard but because they can cause internal burns. I didn’t know this until reading about baby-proofing when having my own baby, and it really seems like something everyone should know. Even my police officer friend who has first aid training and attend all kinds of emergencies knew nothing about it! https://capt.org.uk/button-battery-safety/

Angela

quarter baking sheets – for baking, prep, stacking things to dry in the fridge. I love them so much. Also smart lights – no more arguing over who is the last in bed and should go flip a switch. LIP BALMS EVERYWHERE (purse, bedside table, work table, car, coffee table). … and this is kinda niche, but we ordered ready to assemble kitchen cabinets and I hate the feeling/sound of exacto knives on cardboard so I got an electric cardboard cutter to break down all the cardboard and man it was worth it.

Caitlin

Ever since I watched Gone Girl (years ago) exacto knives give me the shivers. Looking into this electric cutter pronto!

Wind the Clock

Petra 0103HP flour from Brick Oven Baker. Ali Stafford recommended it on her site to mix with regular flour for peasant bread, and now that’s the only way I want to bake that bread. It adds excellent flavor, dark color, and makes a wonderful texture.

Midge

Dior Creme Abricot for cuticles, and CeraVe Diabetics’ Dry Skin Relief for feet. Every night.

Rebecca

My quarter and half sheet pans are my power house items. I use them almost everyday that I cook!

Sharon in Scotland

I’ve just got 15 white thick baby muslin squares. I’ve been using them to wipe up in the kitchen, dry my hands and as a napkin. A bit damp/dirty? throw it in the washing machine and pull out another one then wash the lot once a week…….fab!

Nina

Had no idea how useful these could be until we got some for our baby. I use them so much in the kitchen!

andreea

There was no harder-working item in our newborn babe days than the stack of white terry washcloths from Costco. Mini-stacks in the kitchen, bedrooms, bathroom, used for everything and so easily washed. Priceless!

Katy

I’m going to go ahead and say this 100% free picture of a darling baby in a teddy bear hood is exactly the type of small, inexpensive thing that makes my life better :) Thanks, Cup of Jo.

Meredith

loved that baby photo too!

Cy

I hope I am not offending to the woman here who are scared of chefs knifes: they are scary you haven’t learned to use one. I was there once. But you do you!

Meghan

Handheld battery-operated frother for coffee, waterproof bath pillow with suction cups, cover for the tub overflow so you can actually take a hotel-tub sized bath that covers your entire adult body. Coffeehouse coffee and a luxurious bubble bath at home, all for under $20 together? Indulgent.

angie

There’s a COVER for the tub overflow?? I’ve been stuffing a washcloth in the holes every time i take a bath.

Abby W.

My bathtub cover looks like an adorable octopus! Highly recommend!

Lauren

Yes, love my lil battery operated frother!

Raffaella

Silicone toe-spacers to wear in bed or in your shoes, if large enough, eye drops to combat sceens dryness

Ceridwen

I bought chip clips (in the shape of chips) for the half eaten bags of chips. I like to pour chips in small bowls to eat to feel fancy. The chip clip is great! I love it too much

Kay

stainless steel kitchen scissors that fully come apart for cleaning. I use them to cut apart basically everything but squishy foods. also my go to wedding gift as most people don’t really think of them but then they are like, my life has changed.

Mel

Woa what is this wondrous sounding thing? Pls share a link! ❤️🙏

Moe

I agree that those are blessed items! These don’t come apart, but this company in England, Ernest Wright, makes really beautiful scissors. I have a number of them, including their kitchen shears: https://www.ernestwright.co.uk/product/turton-kitchen-scissors/

Amy

Another one for scissors (ours don’t come apart but they go in the dishwasher and we continue to survive) – I cut up chicken into small pieces and roast for my kid’s sandwiches and using scissors makes it so quick with only the scissors and roasting pan for clean up. Also make sure – if you are superstitious like me – you make the friends you gift scissors or knives to, make sure they give you a coin in return so they “buy” the gift otherwise it “cuts” the friendship 💛

.S.

Yes to this!! Mel, I can’t link our exact ones because they aren’t made anymore but if you search “separable stainless steel kitchen shears” there are tons! Also, if you have a Japanese knife store nearby, the one in our city always has at least three or four different versions in stock, which is helpful because you can pick them all up and make sure the weight / handles / etc are comfortable for you

Ste

https://www.henckels.com/us/product/shears-scissors-take-apart-kitchen-shears-11517-100/11517-100-0.html I have an older version of these!

Courtney

Second people saying phone charger in living room, bedroom and car! Plus buy the extra long cord….so much more ease! This foldable reusable tote bag is the best!! It is so sturdy AND it has an external pocket too! I never forget it because it folds up so small and It’s only 2.99!! https://www.target.com/p/burst-print-foldable-tote-bag-black-red/-/A-77377107 Also this USB re-chargable book light is the best: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09PR1BTM7?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1 I think someone on cup of jo recommended it!!

Helen

A smart plug! It lets you turn items in your home on and off using a schedule or an app. My favorite way to use it: Every evening at dusk, my porch string lights turn on automatically with the “sunset timer.” After walking my dog on a chilly night, seeing my warm house glowing makes so happy.

Amanda

I have a plug with a timer so it turns off.. I use it all the time for charging my phone and laptop

Rebecca

AGREE! I love the warmth of coming home to a house with lights on 😊

Carol

My tiny Swiss army knife that clips onto my keychain…do take it off before you go through airport security! So handy to open pesky granola bars or packets of pistachios. So helpful. Also…not so small but Whole Foods sells a cooler that folds up and is just wonderful to bring on a trip. We always travel with one stashed in our outer luggage compartment. However we travel, airplane or car, they come in very handy and work well at keeping drinks and sandwiches.

Moe

I’m obsessed with my little Swiss Army knife. What a gem and a workhorse. I miss it when I travel and learned on Cup of Jo about TSA compliant tiny lightweight scissors. Awesome! https://www.amazon.com/Plus-Compact-Twiggy-Scissors-Charcoal/dp/B087HWDHWC/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?crid=51T28K1VLR9R&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.BCI32OsraRFkp-MMLiLaDLPgWWvVEBYpszDkuq6N5NexnxFhvJjfQhTDpK4HAuXf.WxklAcXlhEipJOvkD0Q5IZaCrVST4AUQEurUoXFB7ag&dib_tag=se&keywords=tsa+safe+scissors&qid=1791518395&sprefix=tsa+safe+%2Caps%2C293&sr=8-6

Jane

My husband and I have a senior dog who is in his final days with us, so we are regularly cleaning up after him. Our house has a lot of carpet, so puppy training pads have been a lifesaver — we can lay him down, stick one under his butt, and get a few things done without worrying about the clean up!

Greta

They let you live a life of even greater love. My best to you all.

Danielle

All the hugs to you in these days. We went through this somewhat recently and I wish I hadn’t waited so long to buy the training pads! They really are so helpful. We also bought a few packs of washcloths in a specific color that were for the dog only along with a designated laundry basket . Sometimes it’s the little practicalities that get us through those challenging days.

teegan

We DIY’d a puppy pad for our now-almost-17-year-old. It’s a big old silicone baking sheet and a rotation of cheap cotton bathroom rugs. She pees right on it when we’re not there to let her out, the rug goes in the wash, and the baking sheet gets a quick clean.

bella

My citrus squeezer do-hicky. I use a lot of citrus in cooking and thought a palm press squeezer was too fiddly but then I was gifted one and wow – I’ve grown to love it. Love a useful kitchen tool! The electronic shoulder massager. I recently upgraded to this one and while it’s weird looking and I’m still getting the hang of how to position it well, it is undeniably good. I like that I can use it on my leg muscles as I just joined the gym and am SO sore. https://www.amazon.com/Ohiele-Cordless-Massager-Kneading-Shoulder/dp/B0G4LPNW4K

Janesfriend

I have six lemon squeezers. None of them are quite right….what is a “palm press squeezer”, please and thank-you?

Maura

This is the absolutely most tiny thing, but I love my pot scraper. I’ve upped my composting game because it’s so dang easy to scrape right into a bowl, I no longer pre-rinse things before the dishwasher, and there is less scrubbing all around. I got mine at a little local kitchen supply place, but here’s a another one: https://thegoodfill.co/products/pot-scraper

Elly

Not as pretty, but I use old hotel keys for this!

Cyndi

I LOVE a pot scraper! My mother-in-law gave me one and I don’t know what I did before this two-inch by two-inch piece of hard plastic!

christy

This is so random, and i am SURE this is the weirdest place to put this but…. I was just given the news I have “Stage 0 Melanoma”. I am very pale skinned, very blonde hair, and have had my fair share of irregular/suspicious things removed, biopsied, and sometimes surgically fully-removed. This one is … different? Maybe? Also, why did I see the results before my doctor even had….. gah. So stressful. Does anyone have any history with this? Should I be fully panicked? Also what Vitamin D supplements does anyone like for us very pale-skinned friends. Thank you, friends <3

MRM

Hello Christy! I am an Oncology Data Specialist (*not an oncologist) – but I help review cancer cases to help with the staging (i.e. Stage 0-4). I can’t say 100%, but Stage 0 usually refers Melanoma In Situ – which is the earliest earliest form. Super treatable with removal. Definitely speak to your dermatologist. You’ll likely just need more frequent skin exams. And you got to see you results first, it’s just because the electronic chart puts them there immediately. Your dr should be giving you a call soon to follow up, but you can reach out to them too. Wishing you all the best!

bella

MRM it was SO nice of you to speak up in detail about this. It helps us all, imo. Thank you so much.

Bailey

MRM you are an actual earth angel. Thank you

Elle

Hi Christy, I just went through this, this summer. Like MRM said, it is the earliest stage, which for you (and me) means it didn’t spread to deeper levels of the skin and also means it didn’t spread to the lymph nodes or other parts of the body. I got mine removed with 5 MOHs procedures and now go to the dermatologist every 3 months for a year, then 6 months, then a year. Because of this, you’ll be monitored well and should they catch anything else, it will be very early, so I wouldn’t be fully panicked. I feel a lot better being on the other side, but am wishing you the best during the procedures! Have one of those flexible/soft ice packs ready, it helps a lot right after the procedures. Good luck!!

alison

As someone who has gone through cancer (stage 1 breast) recently I cannot stress enough to advocate for yourself – call the doctor, bug them, ask all the questions!

Michelle

Vitamin D3 is generally recommended. You can buy it at most drug stores, grocery stores, and Trader Joe’s. It’s often made with gelatin and vegetarian options can be harder to find. Solgar brand is often available at health food stores and they make a vegetarian D3. If you’re very low, your doctor can prescribe a higher dose.

christy

Thank you for everything you ladies provided! It’s definitely a somewhat scary situation but I appreciate the advice and knowledge shared. It definitely states “Melanoma In Situ” on my results. Elle – FIVE MOHS surgeries? Like 5 separate visits?? Where was your location, if you don’t mind asking? Mine is on my upper-ish back. Definitely an uncomfortable area with a bra situation. Hoping this is a fairly quick, and hopefully not extremely painful situation. Thanks, ladies <3

Kaitlin J.

MRM- you are a goddess- thank you for sharing this information for all of us to learn from! Christy- good luck on your next steps- you got this!!

Katie

Hi Christy, I’ve had melanoma, a more advanced case than yours. My treatment plan was enacted swiftly post diagnosis (three weeks later I’d had surgery + “no further spread” news). Follow up has been skin checks on 3mo cycle for 3 years, with another 2 years at least to go. Bravo for getting yourself checked regularly. Good luck x

Elle

Hi Christy, Mine was on my forehead, which is why they took great lengths to remove layers slowly to help with healing in such a visible spot. I had two larger moles right next to each other that were stage 0. So unfortunately, yes 5 separate visits, 5 Wednesday mornings in a row. I have a low pain tolerance, I usually pass out when giving blood, but this was fairly easy. The local numbing is magical and when it wears off I was surprised that it wasn’t so bad. I am hoping it’s less visits for you with the location, but the doctors will know what’s best! Wishing you a smooth recovery. You’ve got this!

Suz

I don’t know where I read about it (probably here!) but having multiple sets of measuring spoons is SO NICE. I can just grab a fresh set if I need it, rather than pausing to clean them in the middle of cooking. A very small thing that makes my life smoother!

Sarah

I didn’t know these existed! My mom and I have always used old gift cards haha!

Lindsay

This is brilliant!

Mouse

Yes! 2 sets of both measuring spoons and cups. Makes life much easier.

Cy

I have three sets! One that I purchased many moons ago, one that my pastry chef boyfriend left behind and a pretty set ( Eiffel Tower design) that was a thoughtful hostess gifts. I used to collect Eiffel Tower items.I use them all the time.

Suz

Cy, I need those spoons. We got engaged under the Eiffel tower, so we have little Eiffel towers all over the place!

R. Marie

I also have 2 sets and I have rectangular measuring spoons so they fit easily into any jar! I love them.

Jennifer

Yes to two sets! Also. King Arthur Flour sells measuring spoon sets for the awkward sizes—1/8, 2/3, 3/4, 1.5, and 2 tsps. AND they’re shaped to fit into spice jars. I’ve had them for a few years and they still fill me with joy when I use them. So great.

Leah

Even better, take them off the ring they come on so you can use one without getting the rest all greasy/sticky/wet. Also order extras of what you use the most. For me that’s a few extra tablespoons and extra teaspoons.

Sunny

In the same vein, I bought a set of all 1tsp measuring spoons and I *love* it. There’s always some in the dishwasher, stuck in the salt pig, etc. etc. AND there’s clean backups in the drawer when I need to measure 1tsp which is more often than one would think.

Sage

Masks in fun colors and patterns! Keeps me safe and makes me smile. And a dog harness with a handle. Can haul her over logs and rocks, help her get steady on her feet, grab her when she’s dashing for cat turds. And it’s nice to know if she falls in a river, she’s got an easy way to fish her out.

Sharon

+1 for masks!!!

Mouse

Bench scraper. Wine bottle foil cutter. Reading glasses and Dr Bronner’s lip balm in EVERY conceivable place. Luxury is having a million cheap small things you always use in all the places so you never have to think about them.

Elizabeth

Ditto on the bench scraper. I use one for baking and one for cleaning. It’s so good at scraping all the gunk toward the drain of the big kitchen sink and for scraping crumbs off counters. I also swear by clothes pins. A pack of 100 is a few bucks and we use them for all food bags — chips, flours, half-used pasta etc. I keep them in a bin in a kitchen drawer and love having so many on hand. When (not if) they get lost or broken, there are always more.

Shelby

Loop earplugs are my new baby shower gift. Perfect for keeping next to the rocking chair when witching hour appears. Also baby bandanas that snap in the back. Fun and colorful, but also easier to change throughout the day than the baby’s whole outfit when they spit up or drool.

Diana

over the door hooks! For freshly ironed clothes, tomorrow’s outfit etc. Very handy! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09VK3WK6M?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_3&th=1

Andrea

I keep a pen and stamps in my wallet. You would be amazed how many times you or someone else needs both. I also keep masking tape, a sharpie and scissors in my kitchen utensil drawer.

Julia K.

also some return address labels in my wallet with the stamps, so you don’t have to legibly write your name and address on tiny forms. I have a never ending supply due to charitable donations.

Cat

clip-on lights, yes, but make them blue-light blocking: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BHTSMRS1?th=1 saved my life during those early post-partum days fumbling around in the dark and now they’re perfect for reading, running to the bathroom in the night, strange hotel rooms where you just need a lil red light. the battery lasts FOREVER and i’ve had zero issues with mine since 2022 when i first bought it. for $15, it’s a real gem.

Charli

A phone charger in my bedroom, office, kitchen, and car. A pair of scissors in the kitchen, my office, my bedroom, and my hallway drawer.

Libbynan

I am a huge believer in a pair of scissors in every room.

Kim

O’Keefe’s Lip repair night treatment lip balm. I put it on every night when I go to sleep, especially in the cold months. For work, I have a Quartet desktop whiteboard, which sits behind my keyboard and lets me jot quick reference notes like phone numbers, etc., so I don’t forget them or waste post-its

Sarah

I’ve been trying to kick the coffee out habit, and two things have really elevated my afternoon pick-me-up Cafe-Bustello-Instant-Coffee-from-Sam’s-game: – Chobani Creamer (either vanilla or hazelnut – the others are too cloying) – The Intelligensia Cocoa Coffee Sugar with Espresso mix from Spice House (https://www.thespicehouse.com/products/cocoa-coffee-sugar). A cup of decent instant coffee with a dash of creamer and a sprinkle of that espresso mix, and I don’t even miss my SBX latte at all. And at a total cost of ~$15 (plus the coffee) it’s WAY better for my wallet.

A USB lighter. Never runs out of fuel. Works forever. A reading light that is worn around the neck. So much nicer to use than the type that clips onto books. A sleeping mask. I don’t wear one but my husband got one and wears it for my benefit so that I can leave the bedside lamp on longer. :) Satin pillowcase — it really does cut down on hair breakage SO much. A little package opener thingy. I think the brand is called Slice. A days of the week pill holder. I could never remember if I had taken vitamins or medication. This truly has made such a difference for me and is also sleek and nice for travel so that I don’t need to pack multiple bottles of things. I use one from a company called Dosey and it holds lots while still maintaining a slim profile. Trader Joes Ultimate Moisturizing Hand Cream. I’m always noticing how dry my hands are when I glance down at the steering wheel, so I keep a tube of this hand cream in the car and moisturize at stop lights. It rubs in quickly and isn’t greasy at all but the thick cream doesn’t separate when left in a hot car like some thinner lotions do.

Katie

Yes yes yes to USB lighter. Never runs out and also doesn’t end up in the garbage when its out of fluid.

Lynn

Great recs! I ordered the Slice :)

Jen

Ooh, I didn’t know USB lighters were a thing. Thanks! I am going to get one. I second that Trader Joe’s hand cream. It’s the best.

Cy

My USB lighter did stop working, I tried to clean it. Nope. Can you recommend a brand?

anon

CY, I avoid Amazon as much as I can these days but this one is still going strong after 4 years. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F9KMY2T?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_3&th=1

Katie

I have what I call an “emergency pouch” I keep in my purse that has: a sewing kit, bandaids, pads, sanitizing wipes, lip balm, a tiny tin with a few altoids, a small pill box with otc meds, safety pins, a nail file, and probably a couple odds and ends I’m forgetting. It’s only about 4×7” and an inch wide all packed up, and it unzips like a book and has a few pockets to hold things. It’s great because when I swap bags, I can just toss it from one to the other without having to move all those individual bits. My next thing that I want to add to it is a tiny multitool.

Amandae

Can we be friends? This kind of preparedness gives me life!

~Focused~ today

I’d love to join this friend group! In my pouch I also have a small tape measure and one of those swiss army tool things without a blade so I can fly with it.

.S.

I am also one of these people, and I highly recommend adding a pair of Tweezerman micro mini tweezers! Mine came in a set of two (one slanted, one pointy) so I keep slanted ones in our bathroom and the pointy ones live in the pouch. Excellent for splinters of course, but they have come in handy for so many things! And they take up hardly any space at all.

Katie

Happy to accept all new friend requests and new members of the Mary Poppins Pouch Committee 😉 (it’s not a carpet bag but you’d be shocked at all that can come out of it)

Zahara

Yes, that’s me too. I picked up the habbit when my son was little but once he outgrew the “carry a bunch of stuff, you never know what happens age” , I just kept it and realized how handy it is.

Mollie

This is so cute and I would NEVER be able to maintain – or even initiate- creating this. I am sooo Type B (ADHD) and I could never keep this stocked, or do all the errands to order all of this. It just cracks me up to even imagine it. But thank God for people like you! Meanwhile, I never even have a diaper for my 2.5 year old when we’re out and about lol.

Louisa

Chef’n Zoom Garlic Chopper!!!!! If you don’t want pressed but chopped this is amazing. One Christmas everyone I love received one from me and they still all rave about it. It is now my mother’s go-to hostess gift.

Lauren

I have this too and love it! It’s so fun!

Margot

This might not be the precise spirit of this piece, but my small inexpensive hero piece is my journal. I’ve been a lifelong journaler since young childhood, but off and on. When I finally picked it back up as a regular practice again about 3-4 years ago, my mental health improved by magnitudes. It astonishes me how much this little pen and notebook improve my life!

Anne

Mine too!! It’s even more important for my mental health than exercise.

Kee

I feel like I should do journaling, but I have no idea what I would write about. Do you use prompts? Does it feel naval gazing?

Meghan

Kee, try asking yourself first “how do I feel?” Write through that until you hit on something you hadn’t realized or been able to verbalize before. From there, ask “what do I need right now?” Could be in relation to what you’re feeling, could end up being a deeper life problem. If you’re still feeling in the flow, end with “what would I love?” The key is to never censor yourself, even if you think it’s silly, and to keep it to 3 pages max.

~Focused~ today

So true! My journal is always there for me. Kee, I started with Molly Wizenberg’s prompts (https://mollywizenberg.substack.com/p/fishing-the-minds-lake). Most days I stick with these but sometimes I’ll just write whatever comes to mind.

Margot

Hi Kee – I do it all! Sometimes I’ll use a prompt; sometimes I’ll write about an event so I have a record; sometimes I’ll write about something mundane I’m trying to figure out, like how to better structure my mornings. But the most important entries are when I explore how I’m feeling, especially when there’s something uncomfortable I’d rather avoid. Maybe I’ll try to figure out why something is bothering me, or think through a problem I’m trying to solve. And my favorite entries are when I just go on about something wonderful – a victory at work, how much I love my husband, how grateful I am to be going through a happy period. It’s the constant exploration of emotions – the good, the bad, the middling – that gives me the greatest mental health dividends.

My first thought on seeing the cover image and the headline was “that baby might be small but it is by nooooo means inexpensive!”

Josy

Bwahahahaha. Mine too! It’s such a perfect photo- baby looks so bright and innocent.

Peach

HAHAHAHA!

An Ikea phone holder that looks like a miniature version of a wire chair that belongs at DWR. It’s sturdy, functional, and makes me smile every day.

Andrea

Yes! I have one of these too! It is used everyday

Em

A rechargeable LED light up dog collar! Great for evening walks and easy spotting of our dog when she’s out in our large yard. Also, rechargeable hand warmers, for taking the above evening walks in winter.

Kari from Up North

An under cabinet jar opener. The only wedding gift I use to this day.

Lauren

My lamps. They are all perfectly placed and have their time of day to shine. Each has her own name and personality so I can say “turn on marge” from upstairs when i notice the lighting is off. makes my home so cozy.

Lindsay

sounds so cozy and lovely!

Allie G.

May we all get turned on as much as Marge.

Natalie

Oxo good grips meat chopper for breaking up ground beef while cooking .

Sus

A plug in pencil sharpener that sits on a table in the kitchen. No more scrabbling around at homework time looking for a sharpener!

Sarah

YES!

Maria

Yes! I was just thinking of getting one after straining my wrist sharpening colored pencils with this tiny sharpener and having the tips constantly break… do you have a brand to recommend??

Bailey

THIS!!!!!!

Moe

I have my electric Panasonic pencil sharpener from the 1980s. It still works great! You can get used ones on eBay and Etsy.

Samantha

I have the Afmat cordless sharpener in my classroom and it’s great! You don’t have to push the pencil down, the sharpener kind of sucks it in and sharpens perfectly. I am a teacher and have been through many sharpeners but this one is the best! https://www.afmat.com/products/afmat-electric-pencil-sharpener-robot-pencil-sharpener-for-colored-pencils-7-11-5mm-2

Cara

A small clock for our kitchen. Weirdly, non of our appliances have a clock and I was so tired of looking at my phone. Also just here to say that Loop earplugs are also a game changer for blow drying your hair. I’ve always hated the whole process, especially the sound, and now it’s actually bearable with the sound blocked.

Jess

Adding a wall clock in our bathroom was a surprisingly wonderful thing. Keeps the adults on track and the kids learned early on to recognize numbers and then tell times they got older (it’s an analog clock).

Nicole

Yes, Jess!! Clock in the bathroom is major.

Cory

Whyyyyyyyyyy have I never thought of this! You’re a genius!! I have loops in my bedroom, office, and multiples in my purse

Moe

I’d be interested in a spin off list. Products so good that (fingers crossed) you will never have to buy another one. I went through 3 other garlic presses that broke before landing on this one, Kuhn Rikon Epicurean Garlic Press. It isn’t cheap, but it looks and works perfectly after 7 years. I am so tired of basic stuff that breaks quickly. I don’t want to shop for garlic presses. I just want the same one in the drawer until my grandkids come along.

Tracie

Love this idea! I recently upgraded both my garlic press and citrus squeezer after previous versions have broken. I’m hoping these will last a lifetime!

dahlia

Hear hear! Fewer better things! I’m working so hard on this as well.

Rachel Elizabeth

Yes, I would also love a list like this! Something like: only items that have lasted actual users 5+ or 10+ years. I am so tired of planned obsolescence.

Evenings free

Or “what items have you owned the longest?”

Claire

I love the subreddit r/BuyItForLife for finding out about products that last!

Mandy

Agreed. Sometimes I just want the thing that will last me for ever even if it isn’t cheap.

bella

I’m with you! This might help: https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/wirecutter-hall-of-fame-2026/?smid=nytcore-ios-share

mado

I would love the “what items have you had the longest”! Now I’m wondering what mine would be…

Robin

Another plus one for this list!

Mary

I’ve had this OXO garlic press for 10 years. I use it all the time and it’s still going strong. Reasonably priced too. https://www.oxo.com/garlic-press-oxo.html

Ella B

GRATITUDE. And, it’s free!

hali

I buy trader joes greeting cards at a completely unreasonable rate, maybe 6 a month? I keep them in my glove compartment with a pen. I have all categories for all ages covered and then some. Forever prepared! Because writing a card on the dash of your car absolutely means you’re arriving prepared!!

Rachel Elizabeth

I love the idea of keeping them in your glove box! I am definitely going to follow suit :)

Jess

Ha! Same! But in top drawer of my dresser. The stamps are what really get me though…

Susan

I love our USB lighter to light my favorite incense. On a recent trip to Tokyo we stayed in two AirBnB apts. At Muji I was so happy to buy tiny scissors and food storages clips to use during our stay. They were so useful and small enough to bring along for all of our travels.

Blair

I love my little rotary cutter! Rather than amassing unflattering tee shirts that get relegated to pajamas or the back of the closet, I can cut them easily to make shirts I actually want to wear. Best $11 I’ve spent in a bit, and a fun activity that takes little time to do!

G-H

I want more information! Do you cut, then resew your t-shirts? You make it sound so simple. Maybe it is… In any case, I’m impressed.

Alice

Yes! Oh Joy (Joy Cho) just made an instagram video about cutting up her shirts and it made so much sense! Cutting up some of my shirts this weekend!

Jenny

Oh thanks for that suggestion Alice!

Lucy

A little note about coin batteries/button batteries (they have so many names!): If swallowed, they are imminently deadly (and there is pretty much no way to retrieve them or reverse the effects!). Since I have a little one at home who constantly puts things in her mouth, we just don’t keep them in the house. A recommended “policy” for anyone with pets or little humans who can’t keep their tongues to themselves!!

Annie

I could be wrong, but I think they can retrieve the button batteries. The part that makes them deadly is not knowing they’ve been swallowed and then they leak and perforate the esophagus/intestines. So I only buy the new ones that are covered in blue dye so it stains kids mouths and makes it obvious that they had it in their mouth. Obviously I still keep them out of reach, but this gives me extra piece of mind.

Nicole

Annie, you are correct. Still very scary when there are little kids or pets around! Always store your batteries in a pet-proof/child-proof container, somewhere out of reach. I work for an injury law firm and, unfortunately, have seen too many tragic cases.

Martha

Bic Flair pens and Ink Joy Gel pens…it’s a teacher thing! Old Navy ruffled cuff athletic socks, $12.99 for a 3-pack. Olli Pop probiotic soda, about $2.50 a can…low sugar, and 30% of your RDA of fiber! Trader Joes $4.99 Chilean Sauv Blanc!

Rose

I was stuck in an urgent care exam room with my boys (2yo & 7yo) and I had NOTHING to help with the wait. My songs weren’t cutting it and Simon Says isn’t as fun with the 2yo yelling NO the entire time. I ended up tearing a wad of paper off of the exam room table, forming it into a ball, and playing catch with my boys. They loved it. We survived.

M B

I’m a pediatrician, and I often encourage kids to do this during longer visits. I also make a lot of paper airplanes for bored kids who I affectionately like to say “were born with the wiggle in them” (I have three boys, and all of them would fit this category)

Ali O

I blow up an exam glove and tie it off like a balloon. Keeps the kids entertained for a surprisingly long time

Cy

We used to blow up my dad’s surgical gloves and do the same!

Jen

One of the small things I keep in my purse is a tiny container of bubbles with a little bubble wand. When my kiddo was smaller, it helped so much in situations like this and now that she’s moving into her tween years I haven’t taken it out yet because I can still foresee helping out other families with bored or melting-down kiddos when I’m out and about.

anon

We also like to use the table paper as scrap paper for writing and drawing, tic tac toe, hangman (I don’t love that imagery, so we draw a bunny instead), etc.

Eva

My husband has made glove balloons by blowing into the latex glove and then we tied it up and played volleyball with my toddler. It’s our go to doctor office waiting activity now! But I need my husband for it cause I have a hard time tying the knot lolol

Ann

I love my kitchen scissors! Easy to chop herbs, proteins, pizza then throw in dishwasher. I also have a pair for the garden to cut flowers and chop stuff back.

Ashley

I carry a small black leather backpack and it was starting to feel like an abyss so I bought this soft clear zippered case to keep make-up and liquids in. It makes it easy to see and grab things and it is convenient to be able to take it out when I’m looking for other things. https://www.target.com/p/clear-plastic-pouch-up-up/-/A-1011020874?preselect=94881637#lnk=sametab

Kate

A cold brew maker. My husband does not drink coffee and I don’t like to waste a full pot, and after our daughter was born, I accepted that my coffee would never be as hot as I wanted it to be. So, I started making cold brew in my mother’s 1970s french press. Fast forward to the French press breaking and my husband going out the same day and getting a cold brew maker. This and the metal Ikea condiment cups that hold about an ounce and are perfect for a tiny little snack.

Carly

Having to buy pick flossers on a road trip once because I couldn’t get something out of my teeth, I now keep them in the car and use them daily! I was *never* a flosser before and now I can’t live without doing it.

Michelle

Somewhat related- I buy Glide floss (“dental tape” style floss) and it makes flossing so much easier and more enjoyable for me!

Alice

This makes me so happy (I’m a dentist)!

Lauren O

An enamel lapel pin, glossy black with gold outlining, that just says FACTS.

Kim in Cali

LOVVVVVVVE YOU FOR THIS!

Robin

Best answer yet

Tracey

A julienne vege peeler. Makes quick work of a zucchini to stir through a stirfry for zoodles, shreds a carrot in no time to add to gravy or vietnamese salads etc, and tiny to wash.

Robin

Yes! I got one on smitten kitchen’s recommendation and it’s the best!

Karen

Ms Rachel’s new cd in the car. Suddenly 2.5 year old likes the car. 10/10 no skips, Ms. Rachel 4ever.
