Five Fun Things

youth sharon Horgan new show HBO series

Have you seen the trailer for Sharon Horgan’s new HBO show, Youth? Her eight-part rom-com follows a divorced woman who’s trying to figure out sex and love, all while juggling her career, aging parents, and teenage son. “She wants to have this valuable, creative, couldn’t-give-a-fuck kind of life, but she’s not there yet,” Horgan told Vanity Fair. Save the date of September 20th.

Athleta sweatshirt

Now that my boys are back in school, I’ve been bouncing between morning drop-offs, work, errands, and walks, and I’ve realized how much I appreciate workout clothes that don’t scream workout clothes. I really like Athleta, and their new fall studio collection has easy pieces you can move around in while still feeling pulled together. I’m especially into these drapey pants with a fitted tee. You could wear them for a workout, then throw on this pretty V-neck and head straight to dinner.

French fries for the table

The other day, Freddie and I went on a double date. When we arrived, we realized that the other couple had already ordered fries for the table. What a fun way to kick off the evening! Everyone was thrilled, and I’d love to pull this move sometime in the future.

lo and sons weekender best travel bag

When I was pregnant with Anton, I packed a Lo & Sons weekender for the hospital (left), and 13 years later, I took one on our trip to Scandinavia (right). Needless to say, it’s the greatest travel bag, with a separate bottom compartment for dirty clothes or shoes, and a sleeve that slips right over your suitcase handle. So, when Lo & Sons asked if I wanted to try their new Sherborn Weekender, I jumped at the chance. It feels like a polished, super-organized version, with the same shoe compartment, PLUS a padded laptop pocket, water bottle pockets, and even a little key leash so you’re not digging around for keys at the bottom of your bag.

Georgie

Finally, and just for fun, Georgie in her ballet dress! xoxo

P.S. More fun things, and Emma Cline’s buzzy new book.

french fries = table potatoes! always a good move when dining with friends. we always order for the table whatever shareable potato side dish is on offer :)

Sara

May I offer table pancakes for breakfast/brunch meetups. Such a pro move!

Sadie

Yes! My chic, warm friend always gets a sweet breakfast item for the table.

Jules

I’ve had that same Lo weekender for years and I’m beginning to dislike the bottom compartment actually. It always collapses and then the bag falls over. If anyone has tips to how you are arranging it years later to still be a great bag I’m here for it

ANON

Do you use the insert that comes for the bottom? It’s super helpful to add structure to the bottom. Also I just got their new Sherborn bag and the bottom is flat / the shoe compartment is “hidden” so doesn’t have that issue, it’s a really nice upgrade!!

Lauren O

Georgie is a Disney princess for grown women (and I stan).

Reina

OMG Georgie!!! My heart!

Lizzie

Obsessed with Georgie in her tutu! Might need to show my 5 year old who is currently in ballet but very nervous about the recital. The promise of a fancy outfit might sway her to give it a try!

Nicole

Consider me a member of the Georgie fan club!

Amanda

Man, I really don’t need another bag, but… I LOVE the look of that bag! The separate shoe compartment is so key for weekend travel success.

mary

Lo & Sons! I think the teaser I saw last night mentioned your “new favorite travel bag” and I immediately thought, “Oh she couldn’t have found better than L&S!” I have their original bag in a lovely faded green, purchased when you first raved about ’em and I took the plunge to spend real $ on a bag. No regrets! Every time we travel, as recent as last holiday weekend, I tell myself that I’ve got to get one for my husband. Maybe this is finally the year. He uses a canvas bag that can’t zipper and it spills around the car. Thanks for the reminder!

Becs

Same! I’ve had the same Lo & Sons weekender bag for at least a decade, because of Cup of Jo’s rec! If I’m only take 1-2 pairs of shoes, I put my toiletries case and hair tools in the bottom compartment, too. Then on the way home, I tuck the dirty clothes in the bottom to keep them separate. Love it!

Elle

I bought a lo and sons bag maybe ten years ago (after reading about the company here on CoJ!) but ended up giving it away because it felt so bulky, and I remember the bag straps would “squeak” in their metal holders. I’m glad you’ve had a good experience, though, and glad to see they’re still in business! (IIRC they’re a family business)

Wind the Clock

Those fries look crispy and delicious.

Julia

Dear Jo & Team, Would you consider adding the following question to your weekend post tomorrow…. Where were you on this day 25 years ago? What do you remember? I always take time to reflect and pause this time of year. September 11th forever changed us. I always send love out to those families whose lives were flipped inside out that day. Thank you :)

Shoshana

What a good idea. I like those questions!

Jeanne

Lo & Sons is such a great company. I love the Pearl so much that I have 3 and now all my luxury handbags gather dust. Bonus points for being a small, minority owned, usa based company. Support our small businesses!

Evenings free

Thank you for the Lo & Sons reminder! When my ex left, he packed MY suitcase and left me with his old broken one. My friend came over recently to help me clear things out and I said “I want that gone” and she promptly took it out for me. I’m in the market for fresh-start luggage!

Anon

What?!?! Shocking behavior! Happy for you to be rid of such a person.

Amanda

Umm he sucks! And yes, you need beautiful NEW luggage to celebrate his departure!

Dawn W.

Here’s another glimmer to celebrate: For the 25th anniversary of 9/11, the org 911Day has led a movement to generate 1,000,000 good deeds by September 11. https://www.911day.org/

Christina

Love this. It’s odd that Cup of Jo, a NYC based blog hasn’t acknowledged the 25th anniversary of that terrible day.

Joanna Goddard

it’s coming up in the friday link list!

Emily

Love this. Thank you Dawn!

Audra

Every Georgie sighting makes my heart expand. What charm!

Karen

Thanks for the brain break from all the AI is going to kill us, Elon is meddling in midterms again, everything is on fire and nothing is okay that’s all around us. Nice to just take a break for a moment.

Liz

My god I can’t stop thinking about it all, too. I’m so angry with the tech industry and the man-children running the show. The tech industry has made my children’s education worse, it is making climate change worse, it is helping to take people’s jobs away to make a few men richer. It is spreading misinformation and its leaders are throwing money at republican campaigns. It masquerades as disrupting things for the better, when in fact the only motivation is immense profit for a small group of people at the expense of everyone else. And yeah, now add to the list that AI has a non zero chance of killing us all in a decade?? I recently had to leave my environmental org of over a decade, due to a mix of DOGE funding cuts finally catching up with us and AI. So I’m feeling very resentful and a bit hopeless. I have that yurt article from here bookmarked as inspiration and maybe need to start thinking about a plan b off the grid somewhere with my head under a rock.

Andrea

I wish we could clone Georgie’s essence and sell it as perfume!

Joanna Goddard

I would pay a million dollars!

Mona

Love these posts, please keep them up.

Ramona

Oh Miss Georgie!!! 🩰💖🌸

Gretchen Alice

Georgie!!

jane

Well damn, I love pockets. I may need to upgrade my Lo & Sons Weekender to this new one.

Rachel

Thank you for giving us exactly what we needed – sweet Georgie in her ballet outfit!!!!!

Jen

I got teary with that Georgie pic! It’s like a ray of joy shot out of the computer screen.

Lucy

Same!!

Marie

Me too!!

Kim in Cali

Georgie…sob.

Grace

I know she’s not my child, but I feel so bittersweet about her growing up. I’m still obsessed with her meaty baby thighs. Ok, that sounds insane so I’ll also add that the new Athleta satin jacket is gorgeous.

Sarah

Speaking of new shows! Have you seen My Brilliant Career?? It does ‘self possessed woman going against the times’ so well. She’s actually slightly feral in the best way because she’s a farmers daughter instead of a lady. And the Australian scenery is insane!

Vivian

Yes! I watched it and it’s amazing. I’ve recommended it to all my friends!

Cat

stoppppp, Georgieeee, what a queen

Denise

Georgie is such a girl vibe – strong, sassy, sweet, and pink!
