The Edit: J.Crew’s August Drop

What are you wearing these days? Half of me is still in summer-vacation mode, and the other half is already pining for layers. J.Crew just released their August drop, and IT IS SO GOOD — think: slip dresses, chunky knits, and bright greens. Here are my favorite picks, and I’d love to hear what you think…
This reversible sweater is a two-for-one: Wear it buttoned in the front as a cardigan, or flip it around so it’s a rollneck. How would you style it?
And, of course, we love J.Crew’s classic rollneck — I got my first one when I was 18 and heading to college! I love the slouchy fit and 80s/90s vibes. The new colors are great, especially these stripes.
Shirt and slip skirt
These silky pieces are actually made of cupro (also known as “vegan silk” — how cool?). It’s light and fluttery, and has just a hint of sheen. The best part is you can toss everything into the washing machine.
Wouldn’t these drawstring Luna pants be perfect for traveling? They’re 100% cotton and loose enough for a long flight or a squishy car ride, but they still have a tailored look. This vibrant green looks crisp and fun, and they have corduroy ones that are perfect for fall.
Oh my gosh, I love, love, love this canvas car coat. You could wear it over anything — sweaters, jeans, dresses — and it would even pair well with Wellington boots (it’s water-resistant). Makes me excited for drizzly days and puddle jumping.
Finally, ballet flats are forever-cool and so easy for fall. They have a ton of colors, but I’m into this bright red and this green lizard-embossed leather.
Thoughts? What would you wear? See all J.Crew’s new arrivals here. And how cute is this dress for the end of summer?
P.S. Three beauty products our editors are loving, and Nicki Sebastian’s eyeliner trick.

37 commentsButtons in the front and buttons in the back made me think of my toddler’s pajamas because we have to put her outfit on backwards so she doesn’t undo it and strip in the middle of the night. Lol After she did it a number of times, one time diaper and all and wetting the bed, we learned this little trick. Anyways, mom brain aside, I just got some J.Crew nude colored sandals that I’m super eager to wear before the summer wanes and the season changes.
If you look at the product photos on the site of the green pants they are so waistband-less (usually uncomfortable because then the drawstring digs in) and low rise that the top of the model’s buttcrack is showing. Does recall the 90s when we were all at one point bustin the sag…
Is it just me or do the Luna pants look like $98 scrubs??? They seem fine for certain situations (louge pants) but I can’t see how they are flattering, unless you are a waif. Sorry, but the poison green color is also hideous. Maybe others will fare well in that color. Agree that the car coat seems nice!
Yes! This is where I really struggle with some of the easy pants/wide leg style. Similarly, gingham wide leg pants that look cool on the model but then look like pajamas on me. I love the flowy, cool girl look, but I feel like in a slightly different context (like on a busy, harried mom like myself) it just looks messy and like scrubs or PJs. How does one remain on the fashionable, cool and effortless side of this trend?
I’m a long-time JCrew lover but this offering is pretty underwhelming. Isn’t that striped cardigan a direct ripoff of Alex Mill? (And who wants buttons down the back, anyway? Would make me feel like an unruly toddler zipped backwards into their jacket.) Also dislike the heavy cotton roll neck sweaters that they claim we’re all pining for nostalgically, esp. with the dropped shoulders. Thank you, next!
I get so bummed this time of year. I live in Texas and most likely won’t reach for a sweater until November. I’ve been working on building up a “fall inspired” wardrobe that is comfortable in 80+ degree weather. But dang, I love my roll necks.
screams into the void: SHOW CLOTHES ON REAL BODIES. regains composure and carries on. this is nothing against CoJ, which continues to be mindful of size inclusion, but rather against the ongoing trend for models to get stick thin again. these clothes are so cute, but envisioning them on my 5’1″ 150lb body takes quite the imagination stretch.
I do not think I am who JCrew wants to sell too…older woman who is not tall and thin…why do I say this? Yes, they do offer larger sizes BUT only on line, never in stores, not even returns from what I have seen. Please correct me if I am wrong about this. It just makes me feel like they are embarrassed to see their clothing in an XXL for example or a 1X.
I agree with this. I’m so so over clothing companies that only offer larger sizes online. Or only offer like 10% of their line in a larger size. Or don’t offer them at all. or have ‘one size’ like babaa and say that they have lots of different cuts that allow for multiple types of bodies but only show them on one type of body. it is hot nonsense.
LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK! It makes me crazy that I can’t walk into my local J Crew and buy clothes.
I hear you. I will also say that even for standard sizes, they carry very little in the shops. I have worn JCrew since I was a teenager, but I find it really annoying that if I make the effort to visit a store it feels more like a concept than a retail outlet. They have a fraction of what is available to order & are often out of common sizes of whatever they do have.
I can attest to the greatness of the cotton Luna pants. I have them in a couple of colors. They are so cute and flattering. I’m trying to decide what color to get in the corduroy?? That car coat is darling!! Wish I needed something one.
Same. I am ordering the corduroy! Just deciding between tan and green.
I’ll continue to look for J.Crew gems on eBay, thanks! Those green pants are fun.
Wow, it’s only a couple days past one month into summer people! I should read the room and stay silent amongst all you autumn lovers. I love autumn too – it’s my favorite season, but I feel like summer has barely begun and dread the arrival of autumn clothing intruding on my summer vibe, lol. (Not you specifically, Jo, but retail everywhere is always way too soon for me.) To be fair, I live in the PNW where we have 9 mos of ‘winter’, so I savor every single sunny day. I should probably become a snowbird…
I completely agree. Fall is my favorite season, but summer is a close second, and it JUST started! At least here in California, we’ll be having summer until Christmas, as usual lol
I’m with you, Allie. We still have August nights left – give them to meeeee
Same! I’ll just be over here annoyingly repeating it’s still summer until September 23. Why the need to rush into Fall? I blame school systems that go back before Labor Day and retail!
yes and reminder that September is still hot af in most of America (and is still technically summer until the end of the month)
My husband is the Costco shopper in our home. We have a running joke where I ask him to “pick up some Xmas lights, before they sell out”, in July. And he responds “sorry honey, it’s already valentine’s, Xmas is gone! Do you want a box of chocolates?” We are easily amused. Also, remember when we were kids and summer felt sooooo long? I swear from 4th of July to labor day was at least 2 years back then. And all the foods we ONLY had in the summer? Corn on the cob? Fresh beets? Cherries? Watermelon? The giant ones with so many seeds….. Drum stick ice cream treats!@!!!! Long live summer.
Totally agree Allie! I absolutely love fall but I feel like “seasonal creep” has started even earlier than usual and it means that by the time we’re actually in the season I am already over it. I’m trying to metaphorically plug my ears and will be living in summer land until the end of August! Mind you, we’re having a fairly cool summer here in Maine (yes, even for us), so some of these sweaters might actually be wearable here even now…
Adding my voice to the seasonal-creep complaints! Zero percent of me wants to think about fall. We’re spang in the middle of watermelon, juicy peach, river swimming, barefoot, lazy summer season here in California — I’ve waited for this all year and I am very firmly HERE, not pining for shorter, colder days!!
Summer is so weird because there is SUCH a build-up leading up to it every single year. People cannot contain themselves that summer is upon us. And then, like 5 weeks after it starts, everyone has moved on. I really don’t get it al all. It baffles me every single year. It’s not even half over yet.
I feel the same. I love summer and am trying to soak up all the long, warm evenings…. I moved to the Midwest though and my kids’ school starts August 12th!!??? I cannot…
I can’t get behind many of these items, but I LOVE that car coat. So effortlessly chic and adaptable to any situation. I like the pants, too, but I don’t think they’d fair well on my plus size body due to the lack of a waistband.
All I want is the red ’83 quarter zip sweatshirt.
I’ll choose those Luna pants as my favorite! As an extremely short-waisted person, I’m loving the return of mid, and dare I say, even low-rise pants – a dirty word to many of my fellow Millennials. No longer having my slacks up to my boobs feels truly transformative.
if the pants hit at your natural waist, they are still high rise, but it’s just high rise to you! lol
Jcrew has been one of my favorite stores since I was in my very early 20s in the 90s and I still think the gif mirrors they use work well for my tall body. Saying that, and this is not on Jcrew, I’m hoping every season that the dropped/oversized shoulder trend will finally die. I have broad shoulders and it’s terrible on me. Maybe it’s better for my sloping shoulders sisters? I don’t know, but, for me, it’s the worst!
Ok.. typed too fast. GIF mirrors is autocorrect for fit models
I feel for you, Anon, because I have the opposite problem! I’m not super slim, but I’m built extremely narrow and short-waisted. Fitted shoulders never fit – even petite offers no guarantee – so drop-shoulder is my hack, lest I be unable to extend my arms. How lovely, though, if we could all enjoy excellent tailoring.
We’ve been having a great, mild summer in Seattle so far, and I’m living in what to me is the ultimate cool, easy summer outfit: a vintage graphic tee (I like anything with a California, surfer, or biker theme) and my husband’s straight legged jeans with tan cowboy boots or denim shorts with vintage track shoes or Birks. I’m stuck in the 70s, style-wise.
A great place to be stuck – sounds awesome!
I agree with Sar ! :)
Does anyone else have toes that curl upwards? I look at the slope on those (adorable!) green shoes, and I just know they would hurt. If you have curly toes – what shoes feel good?
Man, we are just in a bleak, bleak place : ( Climate change, fast fashion (still!), and clothes modeled only on thin, skinny models. I don’t know if anyone else relates, but I keep having this feeling like “THIS is where we are?!”
While I’m not currently shopping for new items I do love to peruse the new arrivals page for outfit inspiration, and this is chock-full of it (it feels like their vibes are….vibing? is that how you say it?). I do miss fall clothes, but early fall, not November sleet fall. It’s been hot as the dickens in Minnesota and i’m over it
