A Week of Outfits: Srishti Jain

“I’m not great about wearing aprons,” admits vegetarian chef, recipe developer, and author Srishti Jain. “I just wear an oversized T-shirt that I don’t mind getting dirty.” She’s a lifelong cook, but started baking as a pandemic hobby — which rapidly evolved into new career chapter. These days, Srishti is doing pastry pop-ups in Brooklyn, making pavlova for 100, and designing one-of-a-kind cakes. Here, she shares her schlepping shoes and the most-worn skirt in her wardrobe…

Skirt: Tyler McGillivary. T-shirt: Still Here. Earrings: Laura Lombardi and Faris. Bag: similar. Shoes: thrifted, similar.
“Over the years, I’ve incorporated more color and pattern into what was a mostly all-black wardrobe. Prints can be so much fun — I love the swans on this Tyler McGillivary skirt.”

“I’m a big schlepper — yesterday, I left the house at noon and didn’t return until almost midnight. I went to the gym and library, then had hot pot with friends, and after that, I went bowling. So, I need a roomy bag. I have an L.L.Bean tote embroidered with ‘Clam’s Mom,’ (Clam is my cat), as well as this woven bag that I bought on the street in Costa Brava because every woman there was carrying one.”

Top: Dissh, similar. Pants: Dissh. Bag: Paloma Wool.
“I’m an author and chef, but I also have a day job in tech, and the office is in Soho. At least once a day, I’ll stop someone walking by to say, ‘I love your bag’ or ‘Where did you get that coat?’ Even if it’s a vintage piece I won’t be able to track down, I feel inspired to combine my own pieces in a new way.”

Dress: Ilana Kohn, “bought before she closed her brand last fall. I will cherish it forever.” Pants: Dissh. Shoes: Puma.
“I’m a big fan of tailoring. I’m 5’1, so I started out with getting my pants hemmed. Then I tried out more tweaks, like having the straps taken in on a ribbed tank top so it fits me better. Little adjustments don’t cost much, but they make a big difference.”

“I’m all about adding something spiky, whether it’s the hoop earrings I wear all the time or these Puma ballet shoes. Fashion writer Mandy Lee described my shoe philosophy perfectly when she talked about loving a ‘freaky little shoe’ — and I’m looking for one that’s comfortable. When I wear loafers, I’ll add these incredible heel protectors so I can walk everywhere.”

Skirt: Miaou. Shirt: Mango. Shoes: Camper. Earrings: Laura Lombardi and Faris.
“This is my most-worn skirt. It reminds me of Carrie Bradshaw’s newspaper dress.”

Star ring: Dos Tres.
“I recently turned 30, and I’m trying to take better care of my clothes. I definitely learned the hard way that certain sweaters can’t go in the dryer. I just got a lint-removing tool and fabric shaver. I’m very excited.”

Top: vintage, several available on eBay. Shoes: Hoka. Bag: le-febour.
“This is what I wear when baking: an oversized T-shirt, hat, and comfy shoes. I was a classic clog person for a long time. I wore Gardenheir clogs, and I still love them, but now I wear my SUPER comfy Hoka Ora Primos even more.”

“I ‘borrowed’ this shirt from a friend. I wear it to work, sleep, and everything in between. T-shirts are the number-one thing I steal from my loved ones, because I want the most worn-in ones possible, and that’s the best way to find them! I’ve always raided my dad’s closet, and now, when I go home, he’ll leave out a stack of his old tees for me to go through. Nothing better.”

Thanks so much, Srishti!
P.S. Many more weeks of outfits, include a dietician who loves her garden and a bookshop owner who spends the day on her feet.

51 commentsSrishiti you have a megawatt smile! Love it.
For the Ilana Kohn lovers just in case you still have the itch (because yes obviously) keep an eye on this https://samet.nyc/
Srishti – Clam’s Mom – I’m sure you flatter the folks you stop to ask about their wardrobe, since you present so stylishly yourself! (Not to mention the megawatt smile, of course.) Your life sounds busy and rewarding – I’m off to swoon over your Insta page in a second – and your Dad creating your own little pop-up for you is such a lovely thought leading up to Sunday’s holiday.
AMAZING STYLE!
I’m 5′ and nothing fits well. I take everything to the tailor at the dry cleaners. It’s not too expensive and they do way more than just hemming. They can make a neck opening smaller, they can make a billowy sleeve narrower and shorter, they can nip, tuck, taper six ways from sunday. It’s a little added cost but worth it and I keep my clothes a long time.
Hi Srishti!! SO fun seeing you on my favorite blog! And no wonder because you have amazing style <33
Omg hi Riya! This was a dream – thank you sooo much!!
Ok she’s gorgeous, amazing style, and I was already thinking cool as heck and then I saw the orange scooter too? Queen!
Srishti, I love that you are a vegetarian chef :) as a lifelong veg person that makes me feel seen. Also major respect for you being an author and a chef along with your day job in tech. The swan skirt and newspaper skirt are both amazing. Enjoyed this week of outfits!
Love your style, Srishti! RIP Ilana Kohn 😢
Oops: “I had not heard the term shlepper before”.
This was such a lovely post. Thank you for sharing! What a cool and interesting person… very inspiring in so many ways. I would love a post about being a shlepper. I am a homebody. I go to work(very busy as a teacher) but in the evening I really only go our if I absolutely must. On weekends too, I stay home as much as possible except for walks in the park. I socialize when I Must (LOL) but if I have to go out on a week night, I literally feel exhausted about it days before! I just love home related activities and spending time with family. Even though I am quite social, I feel my job uses up all my extrovert energy. So I wonder about: …the frame of mind of a shlepper. How do you wind up shlepping all day? Why do you enjoy it? Am I using the word shlepping correctly? Lol …Do shleppers have solitary jobs that leave them wanting to get out and be around people and places? …How do shleppers plan their days off/their outings? Or do the simply fly by the seat of their pants? I had bit heard the term shlepper used in this way before but I love it and I am full of questions. 🤔😂 …Are there other people who just love to stay at home and kind of loathe having to go out unless it is with family or close, close friends?
Ok… request for a Day In the Life post of a schlepper, bc now I have questions too.
I’m truthfully in the same frame of mind as you, but having kids forced me to spend many a day as a reluctant shlepper. Especially in the summer.
I am a homebody usually but I still identify as a shlepper because when I am going out I like to feel (over)prepared and I always end up dragging too heavy bags around! Also as someone who works from home on the days I do leave my house I try to stack activities so I end up doing several different things.
One simple answer is that if you live in a city, and you have multiple things planned in a day, you rarely have time to go home in between. If you don’t drive or have a car, you carry your stuff! If you’re social, and want to see friends and work and exercise etc. , schlep you do!
I’ll echo EEG’s sentiments – I’d love to breeze out of the house with nothing but a teenie bag, but life in a big city just doesn’t make it possible! I *really* started feeling like a pack mule when I joined a gym, too. I probably don’t need to go out quite as often as I do – I live happily with my partner and our senior cat – but little traditions with my handful of friends make the *shlepp* worthwhile, ha.
ANON, I cannot do a single thing after work. I wouldn’t think of leaving my house. I like to be home as much as possible too. This is especially true since I had to start working almost full time. Although even before that it took a lot to get me to leave my house. I do schlep with my daughter and have all our lives. Idk, I’m exhausted from work plus never did want or need much socialization, although have enjoyed a solitary schlep now and then, and of course with my daughter. She’s a blast. . But yeah, otherwise, being home is my goal.
I might not be quite as introverted as you are but I relate intensely. And I also would cocoon forever if I could. However. I’ve come to realize that for me, the world must be faced. And enjoyed as much as possible. I wear my Loop earplugs (ifkyk) when necessary. I want experiences. I live in a bedroom community about an hour from a major city. Aside from an enormous 300 acre park full of trails and a small lake, there’s nothing here. So I’ve scheduled myself for cultural events that take me out of my single, isolated existence and force me out of my comfort zone, ONLY for things I feel are worth it and also not all the time. I aim for one special thing a month, but definitely months can pass where all I do is work and collapse (I’m trying to save a chunk of money). Coming up next month, the Cake Picnic Tour in said city, (https://www.cakepicnictour.com/) Every single participant must bring one homemade cake, a recipe you love and are proud of, to share with everyone else. It will be outside in a local park. I have my recipe planned and have bought the ingredients and will test mini version. I like to make things so this will be fun for me and the social part will be greatly eased by the whole premise. Later in the year, a comedy show with a Tik Tok comedienne. I’ve never been to a comedy show and frankly never go out to shows of any kind and realized my life is passing me by! I don’t feel at all uncomfortable being at events alone, I prefer it actually, that way I am free to either enjoy or leave. These tiny baby steps are me reaching out into the world and feeding myself culture that I will enjoy. If I could travel, I would definitely do that and have actual dreams about places but – have no idea how to pay for that yet but am working on it. The joy of being single means it is much simpler than organizing with a partner or a family. Also, to speak to shlepping, I work in the field all day and my car is my shlepper. A dufflebag in the back and a cute wicker bin up front has a constantly rotating collection of multiple changes of clothes for a variety of weather, road snacks, water, and an assortment of necessary accoutrements like suncreen for hands and sunscreen for face, lip balm, 3 different sunglasses, etc. That’s schlepping! Forgive me for writing a book!
Hell yeah! So fun to see someone who looks like me represented here! Also, the skirts are A++ :) Love her second life as a baker, gives me hope that I can one day do the same for myself.
I have heard so many stories of people finding a very meaningful hobby that sometimes turned into a new professional life during the pandemic… (and also many tragic stories, it was not a romantic time). I am glad you found something that makes you happy. Love the swan skirt! Love from Paris
that swan skirt is fantastic!! love her style and I also want to know her skin care routine
I just have to say how much I adore these posts. Srishti and all the women you feature always seem so chic, even though they have such different aesthetics. And that they manage to be stylish while also dressing in a way that serves their interesting lives is so inspiring to me. When I get into a rut with my own style, I have taken to imagining that I am being photographed for this series and imagining what CoJ commenters and the other women featured in these would say; it’s such a good way for me to bolster my confidence and joy in dressing!
Johanna, that is so sweet! I wish I could see one of your outfits and comment on it for real! :D
So fun!
This girl can do anything she wants. She is creative, intelligent, a chef, and now a fashionista! She wears confidence with a million-dollar smile. Enjoyed reading the article.
She is wonderful! A request, however: please, please, PLEASE stop including links to Amazon. I’m sure I don’t need to include an explanation beyond this request. Thank you.
Jo has already addressed this many times. They only use Amazon links when they can’t find the item somewhere else. Also, some people have to use Amazon if they are in an area where they can’t access items other ways. CoJ has fully stopped linking to Amazon for things like books.
Sign me up for some freaky little shoes! Love.
I love her style—and would love to hear her skincare tips because her skin is just radiant! What a beautiful smile.
I love your dad leaving you stacks of his old t-shirts to go through!
That was my favorite part <3
My brother-in-law keep stacks of his old button-downs (most have bright/fun patterns) for my teen daughter to rifle though. I love it so much!
Such a thoughtful dad <3
Love the skirts and that radiant smile!
I am also a schlepper! A public transport family, I usually have a paperback, a sun hat, notebook for kids to doodle on, a light snack in a small tote. It may feel a little unnecessary, but it just feels better to have on hand. Because when you need it…! I am deeply satisfied when I can tell a store clerk – “no thanks on the bag, I got one!” And whip out one I’ve been storing in my purse for this moment.
First of all, love this! Amazing style, amazing woman. Would it be possible to reevaluate the advertising strategy? All for ads, I know they’re what pay the bills, but the bottom and side banners make things really hard to navigate, especially on mobile. There’s also an issue with the current Sephora side banner not having a clear X which is a dark UI pattern and not a11y compliant. Thanks!
Yes we are on it, thank you!
I love her style and the first outfit is really cool!
The way I clicked on every link! Love your style, Srishti.
Holy shit! I can’t believe that t-shirt is $110!
Srishti, you radiate such a lust for life! I can feel it through the screen :) WOW
When we hung up after the interview I felt so energized. She really does radiate such warmth and joy.
yes, THIS. oh my goodness you can feel her smile beaming into you.
This absolutely made my day. Thank you so much for the kind words!!
Thanks for this inspiration – I’m 5′ and always appreciate seeing how women about my height bring out their personal style. And one question: is that a flip flop thingee on the back of the phone to help hold it? I’m coming up short on image search!
It’s adorable! ☺️ It looks like an actual Havaianas Baby Brazil flip, possibly glued on?! Clever idea!
It’s adorable! 😊I’m wondering if it’s a Havaianas Baby Brazil Logo flip actually glued on?! Clever idea!
Ramona is right. She glued a baby Haviana onto an existing phone case!
This is the most clever solution EVER! Color me inspired — even more than before!
I love her style and that she does so many things in her day. She seems to have a real zest for life! Excuse the baking pun…
