My Europe Packing List

Joanna Goddard England Packing list

This summer, we’re going to visit family in England and France. I’m excited for chubby babies and rainy beaches! For three weeks, the boys and I will be sticking to one carry-on each, so we have to carefully choose clothes we can mix and match and wear everywhere. Here are 10 trusty pieces I’m bringing…

Joanna Goddard’s England Packing List

Blouse

Joanna Goddard’s England Packing List

Stack of tees

1. A blouse is nice for evening drinks and dinners, and the great thing about this one is that it’s made from cheesecloth, so it’s breathable, wrinkle-free, and casual enough to wear with wet hair right out of the pool. My friend Victoria wore one all last summer and looked effortlessly gorgeous. (This tee is also very chic.)

2. I also pack a stack of everyday tees — white, black, and a fun stripe.

Red travel skirt

Red skirt

3. A denim dress with patch pockets is a perfect uniform for everything from morning walks to shell-collecting to playground hangs. I’m also bringing this striped one, which doubles as a lovely swimsuit coverup.

4. This cotton gauze maxi skirt somehow looks polished straight out of the suitcase, especially when paired with a white tee. Bonus: Red always looks great in photos.

Chino shorts

5. A cotton sweater for cool evenings.

6. And I’ve worn these chino shorts a lot already this summer. How cute is the slight kickout leg and nautical drawstring?

Sandals

7. OKAY GUYS. I’m not exaggerating when I say I’ve found the black pants of a lifetime. They have an elastic waistband and effortlessly cool silhouette, and the fabric is a very crisp, lightweight cotton poplin. I can’t overstate how good they look and feel, and I’m excited to pull them on all summer for long flights, city adventures, dinners out, you name it.

8. I’ve worn these strappy sandals for years, and if you’re in the market for something new, this brand looks way more expensive than it is.

9. My favorite swim brand Andie just released a very cute collab with comedian Chloe Fineman. I’m into this sexy one-piece with teeny polka dots. (Which do you like?) Perfect for wearing while reading a thriller by the pool.

10. Finally, my very old suitcase just died, so I replaced it with Wirecutter’s luggage pick: this $130 carry-on with 360-degree spinner wheels and a removable laundry bag. It comes in 10 pretty colors; I went for the punchy emerald.

Whew! All in all, for three weeks in Europe, I’m bringing: one jacket, one sweater, two shirts, four tees, two dresses, one skirt, two pairs of shorts, one pair of pants, sandals, sneakers, and pajamas. Plus, of course, my everyday makeup and skincare. That’s it!

What do you pack? I’d love to hear! Plus, I randomly always pack soooooo many pairs of underwear — are you the same?

P.S. The #1 trick for enjoying family travel, and what’s your travel pro tip?

What is everyone’s favorite personal item that fits under the seat and holds a lot of items. To go along with your carryon that fits in the overhead bin.

Verona

For me, it’s the Jack Wolfskin Eve bag. I use it as a tote, but can be worn as a backpack if I’m tired. Lots of pockets, a great organizer bag!

Nicole

The versatile sandal comes in a size 5! Bless… it’s so hard to find shoes when you have a teeny tiny foot. Anyone else relate?

Kristina

What brand of walking shoes does everyone recommend, stylish but seriously comfy that might work for both fancier and casual situations?

Marian

Jo, I’m just curious…why do you shop at fast fashion places like J.Crew, Banana Republic, etc. if you have the income to shop at more sustainable places? Genuinely just wondering – like if you love the clothes, etc. TY <3

Joanna Goddard

I do like lots of the clothes from these brands, and also a major reason is that readers ask for clothes at that price point, so I want to try them out and find/recommend the pieces I like best. when we feature brands like frank & Eileen, Jamie haller, deiji studio, etc, readers really bump on those prices. one exception: people do love babaa and seem to be okay with that combo of price point, ethical production, and timeless design, so we really lean into that wonderful brand! :)

Sarah

Jo, it would also be nice if you put links to the item or similar on Poshmark or ThredUp, just to support those who like to secondhand shop or can’t afford to buy new.

Ali O

I really appreciate the forthright response! Thanks.

ARC

For some, these brands might be considered fast fashion but I have had my J Crew & Banana items for years, and they are generally pretty decent quality and not too fashionable and quickly outdated. They have a pretty timeless style and are made often from natural materials. I have tried to shop from sustainable places but the style is quite frequently (IMO) non-existent and I don’t want to look like crunchy mom. Or they are out of the price range of most folks. Another option is to purchase second hand, eBay, Poshmark etc.

Perfect timing! I am leaving for Amsterdam and Lisbon this upcoming week, and I am absolutely stressing about how to pack. I am an awful packer – how do I both pack too much but forget things I desperately need!? ha. I’m going into this trip as a “palm tree” – the goal is to go with the flow and hopefully come back to my kids more relaxed and refreshed than I was when I left. Fingers crossed! Happy to hear any suggestions for Lisbon. I’ve been to Amsterdam a few times, but it was ten years ago when I was single and in my 20s. This time it’ll be less beer and fewer gloriously tall men (just my sweet husband this go around, lol) and more group biking out of the city and an early morning canal cruise!

Alex

A.M. I am also going to Lisbon this week! No tips (I’ve never been) but love knowing other CoJ’ers are out there :) We’re travelling with our toddler for the first time so I too am a bit overwhelmed with packing, I like your palm tree approach. I hope you have a lovely, restful holiday!

Mbb

You had me at elastic waist but lost me at the barrel leg. I don’t get why anyone would want to look like they got off a horse in a looney tunes cartoon.

Annie

Just to say, re red dresses…if you are in UK, M&S are doing a lovely linen throw-on dress in red this summer. Would look perfect after a day in the sun. And a snip!

Miranda

I’d love to plug a cotton scarf for every trip! It keeps your neck warm when you find yourself in air conditioning, it holds your hair back, it can act as a sunglass neck holder and looks darling tied to your bag when not in use! The ones by Mur by Ayca are perfect (I own multiples) https://murbyayca.com/

Kirsten

These are gorgeous!

Wind the clock

Etsy is also a good resource for scarves like this.

AMK

I bought this large travel backpack on Amazon back in 2017 and it’s the only thing I use to pack whether it’s an international, national, local, day, or weekend trip. I strive only for carry bags and I can cram many many things in this bag. I canceled my Amazon membership to is year, but anything similar to this or this exact backpack is a true gift. The straps are super thick and comfortable and I love walking through airport, bathrooms, and hotels hands-free. https://amzn.to/43OuKuf

Hilary

Oh – and an excellent dupe for those Reformation toe-loop sandals actually comes from Crocs! Shoutout to a local Colorado company. They are legitimately cute! shoecarnival.com/womens_crocs_miami_toe_loop_sandals/67-3642639.html?color=353658&ocid=pdsearch&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22377169191&gbraid=0AAAAADCVVGnK-YCxYfco8NrQeXz32coj_&gclid=Cj0KCQjwrs7RBhDuARIsAIVfBD3u0M8VYJf-u_TN6iXGx4RH9jkIRIqIq4SGJi4qnOnR31ArilO4toUaAhhsEALw_wcB

Miranda

hot tip!

Emily

Came to the comments to share this! Delighted you beat me to it =)

A.M.

With some arch support! I’m in

Hilary

I’m curious if anyone has tried the undies in a lipstick tube from Paire yet?! https://www.paire.com/en-us/products/lipstick-underwear?variant=46113077493983 I can get myself down to a single carry-on for any trip, but we’re doing a full family adventure to the UK this summer. 10 days in London and Edinburgh with two kids – I’m going to need every inch of space if I want to avoid checking (which I still do!) I think it can be done, but curious to hear any recs – esp about the underwear, ha!

Robin

I don’t know about the underwear but I highly recommend getting Airbnb or similar rentals with laundry every 3-4 days. We did carry ons for a two week family trip to France and it was great. Also they’re expensive but waterproof sneakers = only one pair of shoes! The weather went from pouring rain to hot and sunny, worked for everything.

Kate

As an Edinburgh native, I hope you have an excellent time visiting us!

Holly

exofficio underwear, you only need to bring 2-3 pairs, they hand wash easily and dry quickly!

Tessa

My carry on is pretty much the same as yours Joanna when I travel to Finland for three weeks every summer to visit my family. I do make sure I have a good hat for those sunny days on the water. Running shoes are a must. And my HRT 😜

Renee

This might be my favorite packing list ever! Joanna, what do you carry for your purse while out and about? I always feel like I need something a little bigger than I use at home (to accommodate sunscreen, small water bottle, guidebook, etc.) Headed to Berlin and Copenhagen soon, can’t wait!

Joanna Goddard

I often bring a tote if it’s summer!

Megan

As an (adoptive) Berliner, Joanna is spot on with the totes. We all have a million- they’re the perfect size and fit Berlin’s casual vibe. Enjoy the city!

Loren

I”m headed to France this summer and will be traveling on the train a fair amount, so I will only pack a carry on. I always bring {in addition to what I wear on the plane} three pair of black linen pants, three flowered {so the dirt doesn’t show} sleeveless T-shirts, one thin cotton nightgown, one long sleeved black gauze shirt for the plane, four pairs of underwear, a pair of house shoes, and compression stockings, which make walking hours every day almost bearable. That’s it. I only bring one pair of walking shoes. I stay in Airbnb’s that have washing machines available and just do my laundry a lot.

Lena

Can you please share a link to the glowered t shirts?

Lily

Omg just the idea of owning three pairs of black linen pants is blowing my mind. Yes yes yes I need this!

Mary

I discovered Marie Kondo’s KonMari folding method a number of years ago and it has been my go to way to fit everything into a carry-on suitcase. I also use this method at home for any clothes that go into drawers.

Jenn

I love these posts! Last month our family took a vacation to Ireland, and next week I’m chaperoning on a trip to New Zealand and Australia. I’ve been packing with the top-bottom-layer concept, three of each with several thoughtful additions (like a dress, a vest, etc.) and trying to keep it all coordinated to maximize my wardrobe options. I have a question for those who’ve traveled in Australia and New Zealand. I’m trying to decide between my 40L backpack and my standard 21″ carry-on wheelie suitcase. We’re in Auckland for one night, then 2 in Rotorua, flying to Sydney for 3 nights, then 3 nights in Cairns. What’s the better option? So grateful for this community and hoping you all can help me decide!

Sierra

I would go the suitcase Jenn – all of those places are easy to get around wheeling a suitcase

Jenn

Aww thanks for sharing that — that was my thought too. I just love the lightweight nature of going with a backpack. But this way I’d be able to check some stuff on the return flight when we have a zannnny layover at LAX on the 4th of July, before catching a red eye to O’Hare.

Mariah

I love this list – however the key items missing that I always need are 1) good set of workout clothes and running shoes (which for me are usually different/less stylish than every day walking around sneakers), and 2) pjs. It’s not a lot, but that plus the items on your list, and some chargers, bras, underwear, socks, makes for a full carry-on. I always squeeze it all in, though.

Lena

Oh also- I think back pockets would look even nicer (what’s the deal with the cost-saving no back pockets – so 90s not in the best way! – on high price point pants these days?) but up to you as long as the 🍑 of the pants looks nice!

Lena

Can any of you expert internet googler sleuths find the collective us a less expensive dupe of those pants. Must meet these criteria: 1. Light crisp cotton poplin (no synthetics, no polyester or nylon, no cotton gauze – all of these seem ubiquitous right now). Seriously, those fabrics usually make it cheaper, but it’s a totally different feel and I love how CupofJo is generally moving toward more natural/sustainable fabrics. 2. Elastic waist 3. A gentle and elegant barrel shape that is not cropped or exaggerated like so many are 4. Pleats like this one optional 5. Basically black available 6. Let’s say $150 or less though $100 or less even better Who will find this? Already tried, and it’s harder than you think! Lessss gooo!

Olivia MJ

Lena, these do not entirely fit the bill, but i would like to HIGHLY recommend the Le Bon Shoppe Arc pants: https://lebonshoppe.com/products/arc-pants-black-canvas. They are made of a 100% Cotton Heavy Weight Canvas (not poplin), so less breezy for summertime. But perfect in every other way! Elastic waist, but look so elegant and chic, the cut is just the coolest. Both I (31) and my MIL (71) are absolutely obsessed. Good luck in your search!

Heidi

Not sure whether they were elasticated but Abercrombie did a very similar pair for 65€ here in Ireland- sold out unfortunately but shows what you’re looking for is out there! :-)

Heidi

Or just seen some at Hush :-)

CEM

Another possible entry (though fast fashion, with all the attendant drawbacks): https://www.ae.com/ca/en/p/women/pants/barrel-pants/ae-low-rise-pull-on-barrel-pant/2322_5821_016

Coll

I ordered some from the Gap, but they are now apparently sold out. JCrew has a few colors of the Luna pant still in stock depending on your size. No black, though.

Lena

Thanks all! Great suggestions!

Amanda

They are not on sale right now but I bought a pair of black Bam pants from AYR last year and adore them. I think I paid $145 for them. They do not have an elastic waist but buttons on the inside to tighten or loosen them. They are magic pants. I wear them weekly. You can dress them up or down. https://www.ayr.com/products/the-bam?variant=42145688780879

Johnny Utah

This is in re the AE pants suggested by CEM: I received these yesterday in the mail and they are AWFUL. Not at all barrel leg — a slight wide arc, but mostly just wide legged. Sewing quality is awful with loose threads, terrible serged stiching, etc. They are going back immediately. The only nice thing I will say: the olive color was nice. I tried some Banana Republic pants recently (also supposedly a pull-on barrel) and they also were not good. Again, more or less a wide leg with none of the shaping. I personally find barrel/arch shaped to be the best on me, and I have yet to find a less expensive or mass market brand that does them well. I have come to accept that pants that suit me (quite middle aged, not thin) are not easy to find, and rarely cheap. Alas and sigh, but life’s too short to be wear bad pants and spend one’s life returning crummy ones.

Carrie

I just bought these in store at The Gap and they are really good! I’m between and m/l and I got the large. I got a dark brown color but that must be sold out online. https://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=896423022&vid=1&pcid=1011761&cid=1011761&nav=meganav%3AWomen%3ACategories%3APants#pdp-page-content

Nora

With an 8 year old and a 12 year old, we are soooo close to going back to the carry-on only days. Question to Jo – do your boys pack for themselves? I’d love to see their packing recs!

jannelle sanchez

Hi Nora! Here’s Jo’s answer to a similar q that’s lower down in the comments :) “They do stacks of solid-color t-shirts and shorts, plus one ‘fancier’ shirt (a polo!) in case we need it, and one sweater/sweatshirt and one pair of pants. Plus swimsuits! Xoxo”

Olivia Jane

My kids have been packing for themselves since they were 4 and 6, with me double-checking for the first year or two. I give them a pictorial checklist, and they pack what they want as long as it fits the right quantities. They’re now 7 & 9, and are phenomenal packers. (Better than I am, honestly!)

Annie

Back pack every time. I cannot bear the sound of trundling wheels and my right elbow suffers from pulling/pushing. Plus back packs make me feel capable.

Tara

Three weeks with only a carry-on would be doable for me if I could wash my clothes — otherwise, full-size bag it is! My in-laws live in Europe and I always joke that my husband and his sister, who underpack, are doing laundry from the minute they arrive to the minute they leave. And of course it takes 4x as long with the tiny washers and hang-drying only. Vacations are so relaxing, right?!

Michaela

Joanna when you come to England you have to try the Pip & Nut peanut butter cups! They are insanely good! I think they’re better than Reese’s! Which is saying a lot because oh man do I love Reese’s!

Traci

Chronic overpacker here. How do you manage to have enough toiletries (soap, shampoo) for 3 weeks? Do you buy extra travel sizes?

Tara

I assume Joanna is staying with family at least some of the time and probably is using their products! I travel abroad to my in-laws in Europe once or twice a year and we either use their stuff or we get some cheap shampoo etc. at the drugstore when we get there. You can pay 3 euro for a full bottle of shampoo vs $6 or something crazy for a tiny travel-sized bottle at CVS.

CKK

I’ve been a one backpack traveler for years and honestly just buy toiletries when I get there!

Cam

My summer bucket list includes discovering local drugstore brands for shampoo, body wash, etc. whenever I travel! Less packing to do, enhanced local grocery shopping experience, and more fun in the bathroom!

Whitney

I have found travel size shampoos, etc. to easily last me 3 weeks or more, but I also have short hair that I wash every other day. If you use more there are a few strategies. One is just buying more at your destination once you run out. You could also trying using shampoo bars and bar soap since they tend to last a long time and you can bring full size without affecting your liquid limit. Also for creams and such that you don’t need a lot of (for me, it’s my retinoid cream) I’ve used the hack of putting those in empty contact lens cases to save space. Deodorant tends to be a space killer – even the travel size ones often have a lot of empty air in the packaging. I like Native travel-size deodorant for that reason since it’s compact and lasts a long time. For me, toiletries are usually the thing that allows me to pack only a backpack instead of checking a bag, so it’s worth trying to “optimize” a little bit.

Megan

It will take up room on the way home, but limited packing is a great excuse to spend some quality time in French pharmacies! I always bring back great finds.

Jess

Love all these picks. And love minimal packing. Anyone have a favorite summer hat? I lost my favorite bucket hat and need something that provides shade, but don’t want anything that is huge/super structured, and I’m not a fan of how I look in a baseball hat. Links please!

Colleen

I hear you. Toss Sun Visor Hat into your favorite search engine, that is what I’ve been wearing and LOVE. Also crushable/packable which is great.

Inez

I just went on holiday in Spain and was very happy with my Uniqlo hat. It has a wider brim than a bucket hat but it’s still foldable.

Miranda

YES. My perfect summer hat is called The Magic Hat. Highly recommend: https://torijonesstudio.com/products/the-original-magic-hat

Kaylie

I was gifted this Tulip Bucket hat from friends as I start my gardening journey and I’m loving it so far! https://hanselfrombasel.com/products/stripe-tulip-bucket-hat-black

celeste

Three weeks, good for you! My husband and I were just having the conversation that more than a one-week vacation in America is hard to swing. Ya’ll enjoy.

Katie

I (36) was just having an identity crisis in a Nordstrom Rack the night before spending a week on Hawaii with my boyfriend and his family. It was my first island vacation, first major trip with a partner, first extended visit with his family…what to pack?! I was overthinking it, of course, and only wore a third of what I brought in my carry-on. I need to remember that family vacations are always more casual than I expect, and comfort is key!

Amy

I’m a huge button down fan, so I pack three high quality poplin button downs, a couple a cotton tank tops, a few white tees from Power of My People (these are my one guilty splurge but so worth it), two pair jeans, a pair of linen trousers, and two pair sandals. The zhuzh come from my accessories. If I know there will be a something a bit more upscale, I pack the NRBY collared linen kaftan.

Verona

Love this!

Juliette

A warning that bags like the one linked are not considered carryon size by a lot of European airlines. So if you are flying within Europe, worth checking! Liquids rules seem to be all over the place in European airports at the moment too. Personally, when travelling with my small kids, I prefer to check in one large suitcase and then just have backpacks on the plane. I love not dragging wheely cases around the airport (then my hands can hold kids or find the passports). And just getting one large bag onto the train is easier than lots of small ones. Where possible, I pack a longchamp bag which folds up small but expands to fit in the inevitable additional shopping.

Amanda

I have the same bag that you linked up but older. I have never had an issuing flying internationally with it as a carry on.

Juliette

Amanda, it might be fine for carry on US-Europe, but if you are flying Easyjet/Ryanir etc around Europe, it will be too big!

Vanessa

Would love to know what your boys are packing for the trip! We are doing a lot of vacation prep for Europe and would love tips for kiddos. :)

Joanna Goddard

They do stacks of solid-color t-shirts and shorts, plus one “fancier” shirt (a polo!) in case we need it, and one sweater/sweatshirt and one pair of pants. Plus swimsuits! Xoxo

anne

In general, I have a “no wheels in Europe” policy. I spent too much time getting wheels stuck on cobblestones and having to carry wheeled suitcases up stairs places where a backpack would have been easier. And I was never more grateful than when I accidentally got off the bus one stop too early in Positano, Italy and then had to do 90 minutes of stairs to get to where I needed to go… I am a big fan of the Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45. I’ve traveled for multiple weeks in that bag, it fits carryon on all but the smallest airplanes, and there are backpack straps that can be tucked away if you do have to check it. I got mine used on ebay almost ten years ago now and it is still going strong!!

H.S

I never thought I would buy a backpack to use instead of a roller, but agreed! Depending on where you’re traveling, a backpack all the way!

Kara

We use three of these for our family of five. There have definitely been times where I enviously watched a parent stick their kid on their roller bag for a ride through the airport, but overall this bag is so versatile and high quality that I know it’s the right long term choice. (The problem with roller bags is that when a wheel breaks, then what?? The entire thing becomes un-usable all because of one part. This is what happened to both of the last roller bags we owner before switching to the Aeronaut.)

A J

Tom Bihn bags are the best!

Anon

I also use a backpack- Osprey Sojurn. Be warned, when you stand in line for an hour at the airport security line, you can start to regret your choice. But it’s great in so many ways!

Sarah

If you pack it full to the brim, and have to stand around waiting or walk a long way, doesn’t it hurt your back?? I would think that this wouldn’t be good for the body long-term.

Ceridwen

I love your packing lists so much!

Ally

I’m taking my dream eurotrip at the end of august and will be away for two months ish (weeee!) and you are all making me doubt my plan to bring a regular sized suitcase.. but I really don’t think I can manage just a carry on for two months!

Anne

You can! After 10 days I don’t believe it matters how long your trip is (unless you go through many very different and extreme climate zones). But you will have to wash anyways so you can keep your luggage light and just wash a bit more often? If you prefer lighter luggage of course

Meredith

You absolutely can!! Just plan to wash things out frequently, and make sure everything goes with everything, so you can mix and match all your options (I tend to just do a denim/black/red/grey capsule). Plan to wear/carry your heaviest items (shoes, pants, rain layer, etc) on the plane/trains. Just takes a bit of prep, but you can! And it’ll save so much other stress.

Anya

I was in Europe for a little less than 6 weeks this spring, spending time in Scotland (still pretty chilly!) and Spain (already very warm) and just packed a carry-on. The key was making sure that everything I brought worked with everything else so I had a lot of combos and different layering options to chose from. In the end there were still a few things I barely wore (I brought 4 short sleeved t-shirts and probably only needed 2 since the trip skewed cool) and a few things I was so sick of that they went on hiatus from closet when I got back (the dark wash, trouser cut jeans that I wore virtually every day – they’ll be back in the rotation this fall, but we needed a break from each other and now they’re out of season). You can do it!! But also, you don’t have to if you don’t mind having more luggage!

Bonnie

Don’t doubt yourself that you can get by with just a backpack! We think we need SO MUCH MORE than we really do. You’ll love the freedom and lighter weight when you realize not all escalators work, elevators can be tiny, so many stairs and your keeping track of one item only. But make the choice that’s right for you, be comfortable and have fun!

Cam

My dad has a sailboat, and his only rule is: “only backpacks allowed on board”. This, plus the luggage policies of low cost airlines in Europe (additional fees for carry-on suitcases), has taught me to travel with only a backpack. My packing technique is as follows: 7 items of thing I can only wear once before it needs to be washed (underwear, t-shirt), so I have a week ahead of me before I have to think about laundry, one sweater and a pair of pants (which I usually wear in the plane), 2 pair of shorts, and the rest is optional depending on where I’m going – swimsuit, hat, dress… and a minimal skincare routine that fits in those small ziplock airport bags. My husband and our two kids each have their own backpacks. This has worked for us many times, no matter the season (I just switch my shorts for more pair of pants if needed, and also, there’s always more room left in my kids’ backpacks because tiny clothes, so I can put more stuff in there).

Anne

I do the same! Can go for weeks with this minimal set-up and you can wash so easily in so many places in Europe

Lykke

This list looks very close to how I’d pack, I often use the 5-4-3-2-1 tip too. I still find it a challenge to fit all in my carry-on though, even with the garment-roll-up technique. Any other tips out there? And my Andie buttony swimsuit and Sezane Fitia dress (thank you to the reader who shared this) arrived – both are a dream!

Ally

Yessssss the Andie button swimsuit is The.Best. Enjoy all the compliments you’re about to get!

Anne

Try compression cubes. They changed my packing, with rolling plus cubes you can save a lot of space.

Bonnie

I like the bundle packing method but if you’re on the go a lot as we usually are it can take a few minutes to repack but I can fit all I need in my backpack. Plusses and minuses of that method I know.

Cate

Just back from three weeks in England and Germany with a carryon. We got caught by the heat dome over England and everyday I wore my cotton dress and every night I washed it in the sink-so hot and sweaty! It was a dress from J McLaughlin and it was fantastic! I just want to give them a shout out because other than that dress I really had nothing suitable having packed for a cool rainy English spring. My advice to everyone travelling this summer is to be sure and pack for extreme heat!

Heather

I splurge on new underwear when travelling because they feel so good on! It’s my little treat.

Katie

Oooh, I do the opposite – I bring old undies & socks so I can throw them out as I go!

dawn

I do the same, plus I buy a couple of new bras and socks, too! Last summer on a trip to Paris, I wore what was in my closet, so I splurged also on a few undergarments instead. My clothes fit better and nothing rode up or slouched down. I make it a point now to buy undergarments once a year, before vacation!

Amanda

I made some choices this summer which I may or may not regret…but I have 3.5 weeks of travel which will include work meetings, ice hockey, beaches, and hiking. Packing will be fun!

Alice

I’m going to Scotland in August, and I need help with midges. Literally what can I wear to keep them away!

Lauren

There’s a popular brand called Smidge that you can get online or we found it available in a few shops there. I genuinely think it helped me. I still got the odd bite, but way less than I had been getting before we found it. I hope you have an amazing time and the midges leave you alone!

Cass

I’m here now- and there are no midges thankfully. I did read they are attracted to dark colors, so light loose clothing is what I would recommend. That and a Deet spray :/

ANNA

Scottish gal here – in all honesty, nothing works that well! Not sure if that’s helpful to hear… Hope you enjoy our lovely wee country!

Roxani

Hi Alice! It depends on where in Scotland you’re going. Edinburgh, Fife, and many places in the central belt are usually fine, and the midges are worse in parts of the Highlands (especially around Glencoe or Ullapool). They also don’t like wind, so pray for a bit of a breeze, which is not unusual in Scotland in August. My approach is to wear long-sleeved linen with a cardigan or jumper on top, depending on how cold it is. You can buy a midge head net in most places near the Highlands. The most effective spray is called Smidge and some people swear by Skin-so-soft as a protective barrier (though opinions differ on how well it works). I get very bad histamine responses and try to avoid getting bitten, but it still does not detract from my absolute joy at being able to call Scotland home. Have the loveliest time!

NWKS

My UK friends swear by Avon So Soft (a moisturising spray) to keep them away!

Resident of Scotland here! I’m very sorry to say that something along this lines is your best bet: https://www.militarykit.com/products/highlander-mosquito-micro-head-net?srsltid=AfmBOoo3_RP6Cernl2aQymF3V-cZZ4SGt7r4QNUz_yxysWUOVN4sg5Ze

When hiking in Scotland in August a few years ago I didn’t have so much trouble with midges because it was usually quite cold and windy. But I did talk to some more seasoned hillwalkers in the hostels and they recommended (1) no bare skin (so long trousers and socks – not a problem because it’s not hot) and (2) a hat with a net in front of your face. Have fun, Scotland is the best!

I know taking a b complex tab daily works on me for mosquito’s. They do not like the smell or taste once it’s in your bloodstream. Start taking in advance of going. Maybe it would help with midges?

I can pack a very light wardrobe, my problem is the fun bag: books (at least 3), notebooks (travel, dreams, drawing), pen and ink, embroidery stuff, writing pad envelopes and stamps, a deck of cards, dice. I have tried. So I reduce the clothing even more, I don’t care. I will take Martyr! By Kaveh Akbar, Beautiful world where are you by Sally Rooney and probably a short Dostoyevsky. What books are you taking? Happy holiday! Going camping to bretagne and then sweden, in july. Love from Paris

Joanna Goddard

Hahahaha yes omg I feel like we are soul sisters, agnès — I basically bring a separate weekender bag with books. And if I finish one I leave it with my aunts or friends. This summer I’m not sure what I’ll bring, but I just LOVED Land, and I’m currently immersed in the beautifully poetic Lion by Sonya Walger.

Laura

I have found it can be quite a fun adventure while traveling to hunt for an english language bookstore to buy a book.

Sisi

I’m the same with books, and my younger brother always comments I’m a boomer (I’m 40!), because I still do paper books (have you heard of Kindle or any other e-reader, sis??). I can’t get used to e-books, but they would def. make my luggage much lighter.

Joanna, I bet you’d like Marie NDiaye’s THE WITCH for its Frenchness; it’s slim but incredibly absorbing and unlike anything I’ve read before. I even added it to my Rec League book raves, which I’m trying to be super selective about, ha! https://laureno.recleague.com/r/94004-the-witch-marie-ndiaye

I keep the tiniest wardrobe in everyday life. I’m a bare minimum product user. I cannot for the life of me manage to pack in a carryon. Kudos to all of you that can!

Wind the clock

I want to know what about sleepwear? or whatever you wear in the morning when you are greeting the day with a leisurely cup of coffee, feeling mellow, not yet ready for clothes, and there are a bunch of people around. And what to have on one’s feet when not out tromping around on adventures. lounging around, post dinner, pre-snooze? Probably not slippers, but if my feet are not happy then I am not happy. Therefore I always bring a pair of cushy socks solely for before bed/morning time. (going down rabbit holes like this are exactly why packing stresses me out)

Joanna Goddard

I LOVE folkloore pajamas; they are so comfy and lightweight and you can wear them around people: https://folkloore.com/collections/sleepwear

Julie

What is the jacket you are bringing? I did three weeks in Europe last summer with just a carryon. It was brilliant!

Joanna Goddard

Either a chore coat or a rain jacket — tough bc England weather can be so different from France!

Sarah

My go-to for Europe is always my trench coat – lightweight enough that it’s not hot, but definitely provides a barrier for windy/chilly/rainy days! I found a quality Lacoste one on Poshmark a few years ago.

jen

that green carryon is amazing. you will see the color a mile away.

Sara B

My family (2 adults, 4 kids) went to Italy for a month last summer with: one carryon suitcase, one duffel bag, and 3 backpacks. I brought laundry sinks and we did a lot of sink laundry. It has completely changed the way we pack, and I was thankful so many times to not have a ton of stuff (tiny elevators, tiny hotel rooms, tiny car trunks, long walks from the piazza to the hotel, multiple flights of stairs..)

Joanna Goddard

Yes all the stairs!!!! Love this and googling laundry sinks

Sara B

Hahaha, sorry, that should have said laundry SHEETS. they’re detergent in dry form.

Louisa

Also googling Laundry Sinks and not finding answers — dying to hear more!

Anon

I bring a little travel size bottle with liquid detergent, but Rick Steves says you can just use shampoo to wash your clothes in the sink! I also used his tip of washing an item in a plastic bag in the bathroom sink when I couldn’t close/plug up the sink. This was years ago when I took a 2 week long trip during a heat wave! My other pro tip from that trip – sorbet is very refreshing!

This isnt snark, I promise. Is Quince the new Everlane/Away? I keep hearing ads for the company but don’t know much about it. Also I wish I could spend $245 on the perfect black pants but if anyone wants a cheaper version, check out these from Beyond Yoga (I’ve worn them in the past several plane rides and am a huge fan!): https://beyondyoga.com/products/elasticated-trouser-pant-31-black-nw1301

Sara B

I’ve read mixed reviews, but I have a dress and 3 v neck tees from there that I really love

Elena

I’ve bought so many things from Quince (from tops to my current winter coat) and it has all been good quality and flattering on me. WIth the exception of a pair of cashmere socks that lasted a couple of months. Otherwise, highly recommend. Plus 365 day return policy!

Megan

I have had the Quince suitcase for about 3 years, and I love it! It fits way more than you would guess and has been very durable.

Katie

I haven’t shopped at Quince, but I have friends who love it. Kind of curious about a brand that sells clothing, diamond engagement rings, and now furniture…Are they doing all of it well?

Emm

I’ve had some hits and misses from Quince. But some of the hits are really excellent for the price. And they have easy returns for the misses.

Anya

I have bought a few things from Quince with mixed results… I love their linen clothes and find the quality and value to be great, but have had bad luck with their cashmere (fit weird and / or pilled very quickly). I have not ventured beyond their clothing offerings.

EPF

I just bought another dress from Quince, the same style and size of the first one. The fit is very different. It is longer and much wider in the waist. And a seam was torn. Very disappointed. .

Julia K.

I have not had good luck with clothing from Quince. The wool dryer balls were ok! I bought a small suitcase from Costco years ago and it’s still going strong. Costco also has a very good return policy, no receipt needed. I don’t get all the pressure to do carry on only. I absolutely hate the additional time spent sitting on the plane waiting for everyone to get bags out of the overhead bins! Those smart enough to check bags should be allowed to get off first. And I don’t want my suitcase with me for two hours in the airport. I am spending that time briskly walking laps prior to all that forced sitting on an airplane.

Sarah

Quince is yet another fast fashion brand that is only SLIGHTLY more ethical. They still mass-produce and do quick turnaround with fashion trends. They lack transparency around their supply chain. They DO use better quality fabrics for some pieces. Some say the quality has gone downhill recently. That being said, the ads are out of control and they are like any other company: they rely heavily on marketing to cash grab your money. You’re better off buying secondhand from Poshmark and searching for quality fabrics.

JAK

The only two items I’d add to your packing list (if it suits your style/travel needs), is a lightweight scarf and a hat (baseball cap, bucket hat, etc) as you never know when you’ll wish you had either. I’m flying carry on only to Germany in a few weeks and have already used Indyx to create a visual collage of the clothes I’m bringing (I find it so soothing to have it all mentally organized ahead of time, seeing all the different outfit combos I can make out of 16 items of clothes and a few accessories). One item I’m very excited to wear my thrifted $7 Alexander McQueen skull silk scarf in the airport and while traveling… something about that scarf always makes me feel like a cool girl in 2004! haha

Joanna Goddard

Yes to a hat!!

Molly

I always pack 3-4 chapsticks so that I can have them in different bags and afford to lose one. Because for whatever reason, whenever I travel (no matter the season) my lips always get chapped.

Sara B

Yes! Purse chapstick, pocket chapstick, backpack chapstick…

Kim

As much clean underwear you can fit. You’d be surprised how refreshing that can be when you are living out of a suitcase.

Joanna Goddard

Strong agree! We also do laundry every 5-6 days which helps so much.

Kamina

My husband and I had a “carry on only” policy before we had kids and I’m sooooo looking forward to packing this way again! We easily did a month in Europe with capsule wardrobes in summer. Love your packing picks!

Gemma

I pack more than that for a night away for work or fun 🤣 I love and am jealous that you can but I’d be hyperventilating the entire holiday.

Nele

Absolute same here. I LOVE to travel by car as I just throw in “just a couple of more” little bags full of “jackets I might really need”, “another pair of cute shoes – you never know” and so on…
