Four Fun Things

Have you watched Beef Season 2? I didn’t love the first season, but this one — with an entirely new cast and storyline — is SO COMPELLING. In an uber-fancy California country club owned by a Korean billionaire, the staff members — including two couples — begin conning each other, with varying levels of desperation, to climb up the social hierarchy. Some people complain that it’s a White Lotus rip-off, but who cares? I couldn’t stop watching.

A few weeks ago, I had dinner with our Soup Group, and my friend Linsey made strawberry crumble. I forgot how good fruit crumble can be! Inspired, the boys and I made this simple recipe in our trusty pie pan this week, and it did not disappoint.

Have you seen Dan Pelosi’s new rug collection? The designs are inspired by his Italian-American heritage and love of hosting parties. I’m especially into his tomato doormat. All the photos were shot at Dan’s upstate home, which is so colorful and gorgeous.

Finally, this week I came across the painter Keith Jackson, and his story is so cool. Based in Kenosha, Wisconsin, he worked as a building contractor his whole life until 2020, when he devoted himself to painting. It’s amazing when people discover their artistic callings later on, like fellow Midwesterner Julie Blackmon, who got into photography after having three kids. (Related, haha)
P.S. More fun things, and three women talk about their mid-life career changes (gift link).

29 commentsMy best friend of a million years is in her tomato ERA right now and I had to send her a link to that mat immediately. Then my phone showed me a tomato print from Etsy, and then another ad showed me a candle. Of course, I sent all the links her way. Her family is Italian so she likes to make homemade Italian food and the tomato has her heart, and I think that is just so special! Happy to confuse my algorithm into thinking I’m the tomato lady so I can expand my besties household tomato finds. Haha
I can’t believe people didn’t like Beef season one! One of the all time casts
All right Wisconsin!
I started a substack recently about being a Mystic-in-Training and shining my light onto the darkness. I’ve been on a three year journey (but really a lifetime) to discover who I really am and why I was sent here. Come say hi :) https://trippingoverjoy.substack.com/
I love this! On a similar journey and love to see I’m not alone. 💗
Charles Melton in Beef S2 🔥
omg NO KIDDING
Haven’t seen Beef – loved Nobody Wants This Season 2, moving on to Running Point Season 2 and Mindy has a new show coming out on Hulu next week! Plus Disclosure Day looks good, but I need to watch Close Encounters of the Third Kind to get in the spirit! Whew, that’s a lot of screen goals. Still reading and adventuring too!
oooh new Mindy show??? just googled the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0oFLuUR-qQ (loved the Zarna Garg cameo!!!)
BEEF – I watched Season 2 but didn’t enjoy it exactly. More stressful and not as funny as the first season. Love Ali Wong!
I agree! I also thought the plot was overly convoluted and they were doing too much. I loved the first season though!
Same! Loved Season 1. Didn’t like Season 2 aw much plot-wise…but Charles Melton was so good!
I am entirely planning to be an artist once I retire! I keep telling myself I can be an artist now… but I seem to pour most of my creative energies into my JOB. Alas!
I love this, suz! what kind of art do you do?
I studied fine art and theater in school, I’ve published some writing over the years, I design my own knitting patterns… so a little bit of everything! I’m really passionate about communication (human connection!) and I do a fair amount of public speaking on comm skills, though mostly within my corporate world for the time being. All I know is life is change and I’m trying to meet it with an open heart.
you sound amazing, suz! excited to hear how everything develops :)
You made my day, Joanna!
wow love Keith Jackson’s work! thanks for sharing
I loved the first season of Beef. It won an Emmy and Ali Wong is hilarious. Maybe it’s just the inner road rager inside me. When I saw the second season was a whole new story, it lost me.
I just finished reading a book called The Secret Painter by Joe Tucker who’s Uncle Eric lived a very ordinary life but had amassed a collection of over 500 paintings that they uncovered once he had died. He was dubbed “the secret Lowry”. I’m not explaining it so well but highly recommend. Its brillianty written x
Team Dan P forever!
moody painting, moody photography…so, so good 🌼🏆🙌
I, too, loved the second season of Beef! The show does a great service to those of experiencing the sadness and emptiness of late-stage capitalism. This season explores how capitalism goes beyond just being an economic system. The show highlights capitalism’s impact on every aspect of being human, especially in relationships between people. It argues that free will is an illusion and the way it shows it is heartbreaking.
BEYOND BEEF was *right there,* TV honchos.
It’s my dream to own a Julie Blackmon photograph in my home!
I would like to add a 5th thing; it makes me feel saudade, at ease, at home, in love, in trust and anything else beautiful under the sun at the same time. If I had to choose one bookmark that I want to go back to again and again to invite me back into the beauty of this world and love, this is it: https://www.instagram.com/reels/C5R1r28rBu3/ I hope it makes you feel beautiful, too.
So beautiful. Wish we could all be so connected to one another
Thank you for sharing. How absolutely beautiful and moving.
