Have a Beautiful Weekend.

What are you up to this weekend? My mom is coming to visit, and Toby is throwing his 16th birthday party! (This song keeps playing in my head.) Hope you have a good one, and here are a few links from around the web…
A $234 makeup haul for $77? I’m in.
Libraries are hosting cursive clubs for kids who want to learn fancy handwriting. (NYTimes gift link)
If you need a vacation wardrobe refresh, might I suggest a shirt dress and linen pants? Also, into these swimsuit colors.
Are you watching The Other Bennet Sister? The trailer felt a little goofy, but I’m really enjoying the show. She’s so lovable.
Believe the hype about the WNBA. “The way Barclays Center vibrates every time the New York Liberty take the court feels like riding a roller coaster.” YES!!!!! (NYMag)
How cheerful is this green kitchen?
Honey, I’m sorry I messed up our moment on the kiss cam. “I’m sorry I mouthed ‘That’s my sister!’ and made a face like yuck while jerking my thumb at you, my loving wife of 31 years.”
Iceland community pools are a hub of social life. (NYTimes gift link)
I never realized how uncomfy my bras were until trying this one.
Why did we ever make ourselves small?
Plus, four reader comments:
Says Jaci on 11 readers on cousins: “When my beloved cousins and I started having our own kids, we created the term ‘supercousin’ to help the next generation connect. Over time, the word offered wonderful scalability. With blended families, when kids from prior relationships joined the scene, ‘supercousin’ offered an easy way to describe connection without complicated labels. It’s a kinship category that prioritizes belonging over strict genealogy. We create culture, we don’t just inherit it — so, go gather up your supercousins!”
Says Ann on 11 readers on cousins: “I taught public preschool for 30 years. Twin siblings in my class were never an issue, but twice I had cousins in my class and LOOK OUT! I remember telling my colleagues, ‘Cousins are a good time! Even I can’t behave with my cousins! WHY would someone enroll them in the same class?!’ It was a hilarious challenge.”
Says Tracey on a Brooklyn bar mitzvah: “Teenage boys make me weep these days. I know there are some damning documentaries out there, but where I live I see wonderful big groups of boys on bikes with fishing rods. Lanking around, all limbs, ribbing each other over who has the best lures. I see a group of 20-year-olds chatting enthusiastically to an old man at a garage sale. I see them code switch into ‘ma’am’ respect when I talk to them. One time, in the ocean, a teen boy saw me bristling at the biting cold water and called out, ‘You can do it!! Let’s count her in!’ and they did. ‘Three, two, one…’ and then, from underwater, I heard the cheer.”
Says Julie on have a sweet weekend: “I am totally in awe of my 12-year-old daughter. She is a freaking weather event that is a whirling miracle of toy horses, unabashed love, freely expressed hatred, lipstick, Nikes, Crocs, puppies, braces, chocolate, sushi, jokes, tears, and hope. I love her so much.”

159 commentsI was reading the comment about teenage boys, and it made me tear up. Last year one of my best friends passed away suddenly. At her funeral, a group of her son’s friends came early and all sat together in one of the front pews as a sign of support. I was so impressed with them and I know she would have been so happy. On a terrible day it was a ray of sunlight.
LOVE a green kitchen. Somehow green kitchens have become our thing. We have a sage green kitchen in our summer house in Sardinia and at home in Stockholm our kitchen sits somewhere between green tea and mint.
Cursive club sounds so cool! I would love to see it added back in to more school curriculums.
oh where is this beautiful place?
Iceland!
Growing up my cousins were all at least 11+ years older than me (oops baby!) so I didn’t get the chance to quite have that cousin experience. However, I married a wonderful man with amazing cousins on both sides of his family who have taken me in and have more than made up for what I didn’t know I was missing. So very lucky.
All of the comments about cousins and kids/young adults made me weepy. Taking the time to appreciate all of the sweetness and excitement of the generation that is moving into their teen/adult years gives me so much hope for the future. I hear about all of the negative, but witness so much goodness. I am glad I am not the only one.
Happy birthday Toby!❤️
Gosh! I’ve been following you then for more than 16 years! Happy Birthday, Toby!
I had the same thought! There is no other content that has had daily visits from me (nytimes aside) for this long. We <3 it here, Jo!
Mum to an 11 year old and 9 year old, both boys, and if we could have a monthly post celebrating the wonderfulness of raising teens and how brilliant they are I’d really appreciate it please. The world teaches us to fear it but posts like these fill me with hope and joy.
My boys are the same ages as Joanna’s and tween/teen parenting has definitely been my favorite phase of being a mom so far. They’re so smart and funny and they have interesting friends. Plus, I can remember being a teenager myself much more clearly than I remember being, say, a preschooler, so it’s easier to relate to them.
WNBA fans!! Can I recommend the excellent 831 Stories romance, Rooting Interest? It’s sooooo good.
Have a happy b’day Toby!
I have a chronic pain condition and EBY bras are the only ones that I can wear that don’t hurt, itch, squeeze too hard, etc. I don’t have big boobs (36C) but I have a few different styles of theirs. Some of them have more nipple coverage than others but they are all very comfy for me. I am disabled and do not wear a bra unless I absolutely have to. I am cheap and never shell out full price, but I do with theirs. I don’t work for them, just one person who really loves that brand.
This is such a great endorsement, thank you Kim!!
Sweet 16 memory: my parents threw me a surprise 16th and one of the activities was a “Pin Nicki in the Driver’s Seat!” game… in which my mom had made a bunch of color copies of my school photo (gasp!) and had a big picture of a convertible. My teen boy friends promptly stole those pictures and throughout the year they’d randomly appear throughout the school… on a blackboard in English class, in the center of the clock high above my reach in the hallway… it was mildly embarrassing but also hilarious. :)
I hate wearing a bra. I found EBY while looking for comfy bras, and I would never have bought a bra this price before- but I did and have never regretted it, in fact I reordered and you can opt in for a cheap pair of random panties in your size and I did. They are the most comfortable underwear ever. I have been telling anyone with boobs about this magical brand.
Birthday greetings to Toby! It’s really nice you share your kids’ birthdays to this community, their ages also mark all the years we have spent together here in CoJ. I’m off to Berlin for a work trip next week, it’d be fun to try some new travel tips form this week’s.
Tracey–adore your comment about teen boys and how tender they can be, in their own ways! Love, the mom of a 14 year old boy
Same!!! It made me tear up and feel hopeful about the future. Sincerely, the mom of two little boys, 5 and 2
Yes, my period might be due any minute, but my goodness did this roundup make me tear up! Why DID we ever make ourselves small?! Cousins ARE great, and my kids only have 2 official first cousins, but the supercousin game is strong, and now I have a term for it. (My then 5yo’s sense of betrayal when she found out we weren’t *technically* related to Uncle K, Auntie JuJu, and their kids…but they ARE family.) And ICE can go suck an egg, and I’m so glad people are keeping up the ruckus. Really loved this installment, Jo!
Well said!
I’m a fat woman who decided to spend my thirties learning to celebrate my bigness. I’m so grateful I did. Now, when my 6 yo son says things like, “that tree’s big like mama!,” I can enthusiastically respond with “yeah it is!” or when he remarks that his baby cousin “wants only you to hold her because you’re big and squishy,” I can honestly say, “that makes sense.” I can imagine my 20-year-old-self recoiling at those remarks and I hurt for her. I’ve been able to teach myself, and now my son, to see fatness as strength and power, softness and beauty, and no longer a problem that needs fixing, but an attribute worthy of awe-inspired celebration.
Mollie, sometimes i think it is better to tell complete strangers how they make me feel & what I think of them, instead of just thinking it in my head, so: I LOVE YOU! I LOVE THAT YOU LOVE YOURSELF! I LOVE THE POWER YOU GAVE YOURSELF!
Thank you Mollie!!
Mollie, you sound awesome. For many years of my life, I enjoyed what they call “body neutrality”, but there’s something about this new phase of life – I’m about to turn 40 – that has me aware of the space I occupy in a way that’s not always pleasant. I sincerely celebrate other women’s beauty every day, so I want to be a champion of my size and age and lineage – to help give others the license to do the same for themselves. You seem like a very affirming person to be around – thank you for sharing.
Yes to Iceland pools! We went to Iceland on a home swap for a week and the family whose house we were staying at said they never used their shower as they went to the pool every single night and showered there! We went to five different community pools and though my young daughters were nervous about the nudity in the showers they got into it fast. And it’s so great for them to see naked bodies of all sizes and shapes. The water was hot hot hot and it was December so it was freezing and dark. 10/10 can’t wait to go back.
Adding a repeat of my earlier comment to again praise the book, The Other Bennett Sister, by Janice Hadlow. It’s a throughly enjoyable read, the writing is so good, and the story and characters are perfect. I would wager even the most devout Jane Austen fans will not be disappointed.
I’m half-way through it, and I’m loving it. I’m going to reread Pride and Prejudice when I’m done. Mary deserves a great story!
It is a wonderful, wonderful book and I cried at the end. I really liked the series too and thought it was well cast but it leaves out so much! I think Austen would approve.
Yes! I loved it so much. My mom is a Jane Austen scholar and so I grew up watching and reading every adaptation and spin off. The other Bennett sister is by far my favorite.
For someone who hasn’t read any Jane Austen, where would you recommend starting?
I think Pride & Prejudice is an excellent place to start… a beautiful love story but also funny. You could also start with Emma. Just start… and enjoy :-)
@ Carly: Persuasion if you prefer a more narrative style with a dose of quiet angst and longing. It’s also a good one to start with if you haven’t read much 19th cent. British lit; Pride & Prejudice if sparkling wit and wry humor is your cup of tea. P&P is a delight to read out loud, to hear the wit. Those two are my favorites, anyway!
Same! I read it with my teenage son a few years ago, on the recommendation of my husband, who read it first and loved it. One of our favourite books.
Carly, for starting Jane Austen I might recommend Northanger Abbey? It’s arguably the easiest in terms of style of prose and I think the funniest – its a satire of the gothic genre so you have a nosey teenage heroine going around literally looking for skeletons in closets etc. Think Cathy from Wuthering Heights (BOOK NOT FILM OMG LOLOLOL) finds herself miscast in a JA novel. It’s the most laugh-out-loud for me. However, starting with something better known like P&P or Emma might help if you have previously enjoyed an adaptation. It can help to have that as a way in. Enjoy and please report back to the group :)
Happy birthday Toby!!
Julie, your comment: ❤ 💯
I work on The Other Bennet Sister an am so tickled that you mentioned it – it is the loveliest series, such a fun and cozy watch
I am absolutely enjoying every minute of it! A good Jane Austen spinoff!
I have a VERY small family…no first cousins! My mother had 1 sister who never married or had children and my father was an only child. I only have 1 second cousin that I maintain contact with…she is my age and we are close from a distance, not having lived in the same state for 65 years! My second husband has 2 surviving siblings…the children of that generation have very close friendships with their cousins and they have brought those cousins totally into the wider social circles of friends. It is truly wonderful and makes me wish I had the same thing!
To have a big heart you need to be the bigger person. ❤️ Love Virginia Sole-Smith!
On my 16th birthday my mum played “Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen” on repeat from waking me up in the morning, to driving me to school, to picking me up from ballet. All day. On repeat. Singing along with glee as she did it. It drove me crazy and then by the end I was belting it out with her too. Free idea for Toby’s birthday if you need it.
I loved the Other Bennet Sister. The love triangle, the yearning, the rolled up sleeves, the discovering how to exist on your terms in a society telling you what you ‘should’ be doing and how you ‘should’ be.. Discussions have been had with friends on portrayal of Mrs Bennett from the perspective of Mary. Has been my favourite show of the year so far.
I love the cursive club! My husband & I have been writing a baby book for our newborn son, and I realized we will probably need to teach him cursive if we want him to be able to read it when he’s grown, not to mention all the cards and letters from grandparents and other family historical documents!
I’ve been teaching cursive handwriting as part of my occupational therapy practice for about 30 years now. I use the Handwriting Without Tears method, which I find very easy to master, since the writing is vertical instead of on a slant and many of the unnecessary embellishments { for instance no loops on the O, H or P} are streamlined. My kids absolutely love learning how to sign their names and are motivated to continue. It’s often easier to write in cursive than in print and you can definitely write faster and more legibly. Parents also report that their kids’ fine motor skills and executive functioning improve with daily dedicated practice.
SLP here who works with kids with learning disabilities and I can’t sing the praises of cursive handwriting enough! Every summer I buy practice books for my three daughters and if they finish the book, they earn a special mama date.
Omg Morgan I love this idea! My kid did learn cursive at school and he prefers to write in cursive everywhere always but his handwriting drives me crazy! Maybe this can be part of our summer.
Can you recommend a fun program for adults to practice?? I have physical issues with my hands and writing has become so difficult, but I think a dedicated daily practice might help
Love the bra! It is so comfy and washes well.
Guys, I just got those linen pants from Quince and they might be the perfect summer pants. I’m 5’11” and they hit around the ankle in a perfect way. Highly recommend!
I love a green kitchen and that Colby Minifie story was so inspiring!
I have a set of cousins I dubbed “super cousins” because although technically they are my second cousins, our grandfathers were identical twins, so we share extra DNA. 1.5 cousins?
How was that 16 years ago?!?!?!!!! 🥰❤️
I really want to wear sheer and adorable bralettes, but my rambunctious nips are avid glass cutters no matter the temp and it makes me feel too risqué for public outings. Anyone know of very cute, comfortable bras for small boobs (not Pepper, I tried)? I currently wear very comfortable sports bras that would make my Granny beam in pride, but I wouldn’t mind an upgrade.
Hahaah love this comment! Wish I had an answer for you.
Calvin Klein Invisibles! Thin liner pads for the win.
I wouldn’t say these are cute but they are quite comfortable. True and co bras. I haven’t worn an underwire in years.
I really like Aerie’s bras, and they are inexpensive to boot.
Try Coobie. I have worn them for years. Still a little sports bra-ish, but some decent options and very comfortable. From a fellow small boober.
Okay… this is territory I’m wading into after my 14 yo son told me that seeing my nipples was embarrassing. I tried the “Why? It’s just my body” approach, but he shrugged and looked uncomfortable. Enter silicone nipple covers. I tried Cakes and Nippies (both via Amazon) and prefer the latter, but only slightly. I did like the Cakes brand that were triangle shaped, and might get those for specific shirts/bras. I was dubious about this approach, but can attest that I completely forgot they were there. They’re sheer silicone and reusable and don’t change anything except the visible nipple (I hate padding in general). Problem solved. (Also, I only wear bralettes b/c even a clasp in the back seems like more hardware than I want to deal with in a bra. I like the BodyMove Scoop Bralette from Athleta and the CRZ YOGA Softhold Double Lined Triangle Bralette, which is an Athleta knockoff of the BodyMove Plunge Bralette.)
I shop Aerie! They have AA wireless bras that are super comfortable but give coverage and don’t feel like sports (or training) bras!
I wear a pair of non-adhesive silicone nipple covers to tame my glass cutters! Works both alone and with a bralette, and I don’t have to worry about my proud tips and stark areolas being visible in sheer clothing.
I love True and Co. bralettes. They are the only bras I wear anymore because they are so comfortable. They have sturdy round removable pads so you can remove or double up, etc.
Ok this is going to sound like a sports bra recommendation, but I’m in the same camp as you and I really appreciate the lululemon bend this scoop and square bra. There’s also a bend this cami spaghetti strap bra option if you prefer thinner straps. Anyway it comes with this light padding so the nips don’t protrude, it has no hooks so it works for my sensory issues, the fabric is so soft, and you can reverse the bra so it’s more of a scoop neck on one side and a square neck the other side. Two bras in one! About the padding, it’s this interesting hook in mechanism (not the flimsy triangle padding). I have tried so many bras and this is so far my fave.
I have the same issue and have had success with Calvin Klein bras. Macy’s usually has decent selection. (I always bra shop in person… ordering online and returning them seems like more hassle to me.)
I second this request! My small boobs don’t need much support but I just cannot with my very aggressive nips!
I hope you get some responses. I’m looking for the same. I love, love, love my Timpa mesh bras, but they’ve been discontinued. I have sensitive skin and react to the elastic in the lace, but Timpa may be a good fit for you.
The wireless tshirt bra from Boody! So comfy and covers those nips
I’ve worn this type for about 10 years- ever since having kids and finding maternity bras more comfortable. They’re a cute, inexpensive, comfortable option for the small chested :) The brand is Kalon and it’s one of the only things I still buy on Amazon https://amzn.to/4drvTfz
Buy Cakes nip covers and put them in your bra! That’s what I do :)
I love the honey love wireless bras and they have the removable liner — I like the soft form one
Check out Underoutfit bralettes. Smooth and soft (pull-on, no hook and eye in back) with a little padding in the cups
Wow, thank you everyone for the recs. You are as outstanding as my nips.
I’ll put in a plug for Third Love!
Babe, you have nipples. Who cares?
Everything about this comment and reply thread is wonderful. I love women so much.
Jockey Organic Cotton Stretch Triangle Bralettes
Everyone should of course dress/wear what makes them comfortable. But recently I started wearing minimized bras and they are unlined, I don’t want to add any more thickness to my chest and so now frequently my nipples are visible and at first I felt like oh god. But then now I’m thinking why are we made to feel this is a problem? Men have their nipples out all the time weather shirtless or visible through their shirts. I’m tired of feeling shame about my body because of how society has made us feel we need to cover ours up.
Oh I really like the EBY support bralette! It’s lined, cute, and so comfy. And perfectly shaped my partly-concave boobline
I’m working toward nipple nonchalance, but haven’t quite made it. My husband encourages me to let them air out, carefree. I was raised strict Baptist in ankle length skirts, everything oversized, gathered, and pleated. Body shape out of sight just in case I stumblingblocked one of the men around me. I still can’t wear a swimsuit without shorts over the bottom even when only my husband is in the lake with me. Just in case, I don’t know, a drone is way up there in the sky noticing that my Christmas ham ass is literally eating that swimsuit alive. But I’ve come a long way because they are very teeny shorts now, instead of men’s basketball shorts. And to my little girls I say, “wear whatever you want and I’ll catch up with you one day”. Teach your mother, you wildly confident, beautiful spirits.
I buy these nipple covers from Target. $10, wash gently with mild soap and water if you sweat, and they last. And don’t break the bank when you have to replace. https://www.target.com/p/fashion-forms-women-39-s-adhesive-breast-petals-one-size-fits-most/-/A-80420037#lnk=sametab
Happy 16th to Toby! I hope he has the best fun! Our daughter is being discharged from hospital from a very long time there so I’m booking us in to see The Devil Wears Prada 2. Home from hospital can be overwhelming so aiming for steady, calm and loving times and preparedness for anything. The best but for her will be the crazy excitement of our dog when she sees her walk through the door! Pure loving delight!
Hope you have a wonderful evening together as she settles in at home! Hugs to you mama!
Thank you Jen xx
Caleb Hearon, yes! What a good answer. Also I did NOT know he was going to be in Devil Wears Prada 2?!? I’ve watched clips of Caleb’s comedy on YouTube and was delighted to see him pop up in the movie! He’s hilarious and seems to have his head on straight.
Caleb is an absolute delight and equal parts hilarious and generous. I had the pleasure of being his downstairs neighbor for his first year in Chicago, and he and his close friends are so good at creating and building up community! Huge supporter of tenants unions, too. I will take any chance I get to sing his praises!
I hope Toby has a wonder 16th birthday.
Happy birthday Toby! My oldest turns 10 today and literally asleep on my shoulder with strep. “Worst birthday ever!” Lol But i have always thought my boys looked so much like yours just on a 6 year delay. Cheers to your cute lanky 16 year old who used to make us laugh with the funny things he would say.
Toby!16!Wow! 😎🚘👍🏼
I see a lot of people describing teenage boys as “lanky, gangly, all limbs,” and while SOME teen boys look like that, many don’t! There are chubby and stocky boys too!! I just feel like this idealized image of teen boys can be damaging to kids who don’t fit the mold, and we would never stereotype teen girls’ bodies in this way?
I felt that way the other day when indeed girls bodies were described this way on here. I did not like it then and I hear you Elle. Same goes for boys
Thank you, Elle! Perfectly said. I feel this is so important too.
100% this!! It drives me crazy every time this blog mentions teen boys and almost without fail mentions them as lanky. It feels very off brand to continually comment on their bodies. We can see them in the photo, we don’t need the added “so lanky! so long! so thin!”
My teen son is lanky, and we noticed that he was really upset – my mum and his aunty always comment on how skinny he is – the thing is, he doesn’t love being skinny. When I realised I told him that both his nan and Aunty struggle with being overweight, and so to them, he is effortlessly gorgeous – and they should not comment on his body. We had a family chat, and they were so sorry! It was interesting for all of us to see how we say the things that matter to us, without thinking abut how those comments land.
I completely agree. It made me uncomfy when young girls were described as “coltish.” as a girl who saw herself as “chubby” in adolescence, this kind of phrasing feels damaging and unnecessary, whether it’s directed at young boys, young girls, or adults. we don’t need to stereotype any particular group of people’s bodies!
Thanks for this, Elle! A good reminder that it’s best not to comment on other’s bodies, regardless of their age
Speaking of bras, I own a couple Third Love t-shirt bras that fit perfectly. I respect that they offer half-cup sizes. Mine are circa COVID era. Does anyone still buy them and can vouch for the quality, service, wear? I never see their ads hit my feed…but I bet they will after typing this comment LOL.
I do! I have four of the Organic Cloud Cotton Perfect Coverage Bra and they are so comfortable.
I finally replaced my first Third Love bras about a year ago. The others were like yours from 2020 or so. The fabric tore on the little front stretch between the cups on one bra, but one of them is still going strong (though the straps are losing their elasticity). The newest ones are a year old and seem to be of the same quality! I love them so much for my very small breasts (which are more or less just nipples after my third kid, lol).
I wish well-maintained pools as a non-party social setting for adults were a thing in the US. I’m going to finish binging the Off Campus series, which I’ve loved loved loved. I’ve been craving a college setting since I finished “Heart the Lover,” and this one hits the spot. When it came out this week, I looked for a “Four Things” post in hopes of a mention. My copy of Strangers is due on Monday, so I need to crack that open. Oh, and my husband asked me to replace all his clothes… we’re relocating to the PNW. What does he need?
You need good rain coats. Do not use an umbrella.
Haha, Kim! In addition, he needs jeans, t-shirts, flannel shirts, and a track jacket. Good running shoes. That’ll do! We specialize in casual. :)
Tracey! “and then, from underwater, I heard the cheer.” THIS IS SO SO SO BEAUTIFUL!
Wasn’t that just the best? It made me feel as though I were right there, and I beamed with pride for a swimmer and a cheering section I’ve never met.
Obsessed with this.
On teen boys: I broke my foot in three places a couple of years ago. It was painful and inconvenient, to say the least. I dreaded my first trip to the grocery store! It seemed such a daunting task while trying to heal. You guys, I was rescued over and over again by wonderful teen aged boys that offered to help! It makes me teary thinking about it! One of them said to me: “‘Just give me your list and you seat down, yes?”. I wish I could send flowers to their mothers!!!
Love this! I was on a crowded bus yesterday and was surrounded by a gaggle of teen boys. They were having a grand time screaming back and forth to each other as they stood in the aisle. As we approached my stop, I found myself preparing to have to fight my way through them. As soon as I stood up, the boy in front of me started yelling at his friends “Bruh, move out of the way!” and that one yelled at the friends ahead of him until a path had formed between me and the door. It warmed my heart and it reminded me not to judge folks before they show you who they really are. Bravo to these boys and whoever taught them how to look out for others.
Do we have any pool communities like this in the US? My husband and I are exploring cities to move, and I’d love to find a city that offers something like this, even in the cold months.
the lakes around Ann Arbor had this vibe when I visited friends there
austin texas has so great pool energy
I second the comment on Austin pools. We have several iconic (to locals) pools open year round, many of them spring fed. Some are warm and some are icy (looking at you Barton Springs!). They all have year round regulars. And then in the summer they are the place to go to hang with kids. I run into friends basically any time I bring my kid to the pool, no matter which pool. It’s joyful. Austin has gotten a tech bro rap in the last few years and say we didn’t keep Austin weird but for places to hang out communally I think we have it pretty good. Lots of family friendly breweries, coffee shops, parks and public spaces.
+1 to Austin! Barton Springs is dreamy. Chicago has a strong lake community in the summers, especially if you’re in your DINKY or single era. The north shore suburbs are all really into their beaches if you’re in your suburban era. Great in the summer with kids and there are lots of polar bear clubs in the winter, I believe.
i just have a question for the NYT article writer… what is “accentless English”? :)
I am baffled by this too.
They probably just mean that she speaks without an Icelandic accent, as though English could be her first language…not that she speaks some official “version” of accent-free English.
Ugh I had to stop reading there. I suppose she meant the speaker sounds like someone who works at the New York Times?
It means she spoke English so well you couldn’t hear her Icelandic accent.
Lol too true
I think it was meant to be a comparison between her intrinsic Icelandic heritage and her lack of audible Icelandic accent… but I agree it has overtones of racism.
I just LOVE Julie’s comment about her daughter! As the mom of a 13yo boy I could easily write a similar love note of contradictions and mysteries and magic of my teen.
I absolutely love Tracey’s comment about teenage boys because I see them in these moments too. All the time.
Me too! And I’m now going to use “lanking around” to describe the teens in my life because it’s absolutely perfect.
Are you a NY Liberty fan? I know you’ve talked about them before :-)
yes!!!!! we love them so much!!!!
That photo is SUCH a breath a fresh air!! I can almost hear the silence. . . Question re: Quince. The few things I’ve ordered from them just seem low quality. Any tried and true winners people recommend??
Organic fisherman sweaters. Have many, love them all.
I’ve had good luck with them, overall. items that get the most love are their joggers, cotton sweaters (inc for kiddo), and their linen pants
I really like their jeans (yay short inseams!) and cardigans
I have two of their cashmere sweaters and am disappointed. They are cheap and they look cheap and pill. I have two old Uniqlo cashmere V-necks and even after 7 or 8 years and frequent wearing, there is no pilling. Not sure if they quality has kept up but these old ones are awesome.
I agree about the fisherman sweaters. I have 2!
I’m not impressed with the quality at Quince. The only thing I ordered and kept is one of the silk slip skirts.
I have a denim shirt and lots of tee shirts that I love from Quince. The cashmere is thin and pills very easily. My linen button down is okay but scratchier than higher priced linen. I’ve sent back many, many other items. Returns are easy.
Ditto on the fisherman sweaters! I also have overalls, dresses and jeans from Quince and I’ve been very happy with them.
I like their towels and their cotton sweaters—the thing with quince is that they my impression is that they contract with tons of different suppliers (including east fork, for example) so there’s a range. Pretty sure the towels I got are shipped literally from turkey. I’m guessing their clothes are from all different places, not like one supplier with a certain level of quality. I think their cashmere sucks, personally, but other people love it, so it’s hard to know what’s what!
First time Quince shopper here in Canada, I grabbed a Cotton Fisherman Sweater and it is awesome! Great fabric and overall quality.
As a short wasted person, even their midrise pants were far too high-rise for me but I have been living in their buttondowns! I have them in Oxford, poplin and denim – and I wear them to work all the time.
I bought a handbag and a work tote and have been pretty happy with them. (Note that I am not a Fancy Bag person at all.) Still, the leather is nice, they are what I expected based on photos on the website and they’ve held up well.
I bought a cotton mock neck sweater that I seriously loved, but I found a flaw in the weaving where the threads were unravelling in one spot. The customer support for the return was excellent, even though I’d had the item for over a month (only worn a couple times, never washed) but I was bummed it did not work out.
I have the fit and flare flown knit breeze dress. I bought it last year to wear in Italy. I just wore it yesterday and it’s in great shape!

To me, it’s not so much the quality as the fit. I’ve given up on them.
I really like their washable silk work blouses.
These round-ups are always the best way to start the weekend. Mary and I worked together in college, and it makes me so happy to see her McSweeny’s article get some love from the publication that I love!
I love this!
Just barely finished The Other Bennet Sister book and LOVED it, and can’t wait to watch the series!
The book is terrific, a totally satisfying read. I loved it. Author is Janice Hadlow.
I am really loving the book too! Can’t wait to watch the show.
I have to object to that Eby bra rec – I got lured into buying two off instagram and they were like tissue paper holding grapefruits. Sag city!
Oh nooo! I ordered a bunch to try before I read your comment – fingers crossed!
🤣
Ok I came to the comments section to see if anyone else had tried that bra. I love the size inclusivity on the website but no actual pictures of bigger girls wearing them. Reddit threads say Eby is a lot like other DTC bra companies–all marketing, non-existent customer service, Amazon bra quality and tough returns. Does someone at CoJ actually wear that bra, and if so, could you comment?
Bummer to hear of others’ experiences. I discovered Timpa’s itty bitty titty mesh bras via CoJ forever ago and my beloved Natacha has been out of stock for 5+ years. I’ve tried a dozen similar mesh options, but no luck! I was hoping this might be my new go-to. Drats!
“Like tissue paper holding grapefruits” has me cracking up!
I’m an H-cup and I love them for a one-hour Pilates class. They are super comfortable, I don’t need a ton of support because I’m lying down on a Reformer half the time, and they absorb sweat. Otherwise, I find them too uni-boob-y, a little tissue paper/grapefruit-y, and they get a little smelly (see above, sweat absorption).
Small ribcage big boobs here and they’re a no for me—these and the Evelyn and Bobby just don’t support me enough! I think they’re probably fine for smaller boobs since that’s a less complex support operation?
This Dora Larsen mesh bra works well for me. https://doralarsen.com/products/jean-bralette. They also have one that’s the same silhouette, but made of cotton, which provides a little more coverage for the ol’ nips. I’m in the neighborhood of a 34B, but the girls continue to deflate with middle age, so I don’t have a whole lot to hold up/in at this point. Also, why must they airbrush the nipples out of these photos. If you’re shopping for a bra, there’s a good chance you know what’s in there! It would be good to be able to gauge how sheer things are.
I don’t have big girls but I love the bra. I have a chronic pain condition and it is the only one I can wear. I sometimes forget I’m wearing one.
