A Milk Chocolate Taste Test

Six years ago, we featured a taste test of dark chocolate bars, and one reader commented: “The best dark chocolate is milk chocolate.” A hot take, and one with which I happen to agree! So, we thought it was time for another experiment…
We couldn’t have asked for a better panel of judges: five seventh graders, with sweet teeth and strong opinions. Anton’s friends came over after school, and we challenged them to rate 11 popular milk chocolate brands in a blind taste test.

The Contenders:
Only plain milk chocolate varieties were included (no nuts, fillings, or flavors).

The Methodology:
Following Jenny’s finely tuned protocol, I served as master of ceremonies, with Joanna joining as my hype woman. I set up the samples ahead of time, “blinding” the brands as much as possible (those engraved with logos were turned upside down), along with sparkling water and unsalted crackers for cleansing the palate between samples. Each sample was numbered, and only I had the key to the corresponding brands.

I instructed the testers — Nick, Anton, Sienna, Juliet, and Ella — to taste each sample at the same time and weigh in on attributes like sweetness, bite, creaminess, and flavor. Then I asked them to privately rank each sample on a scale of 1-5 (5 being the best). I also asked them to refrain from making guesses on the chocolate brands, to avoid influencing each other. Did they follow these last two instructions? No, not even for a second. (Future scientists, take note: middle schoolers cannot not talk to each other). But did they take the task of scrutinizing and ranking these chocolates extremely seriously? Yes, 100%.

When testing was complete, I gathered their score sheets and averaged the rankings of each sample. In retrospect, I also should have instructed them to round their decimals, so as to avoid rankings like 4.12595982484636456467. But again, this was a flaw in my own procedure, and I cannot fault the children for being precise.
In the end, it didn’t matter anyway. After running the numbers and reviewing their observations, the results were very clear. Here are our findings — and scroll down to the bottom for the overall winner:

The Creamiest
Lindt Classic Recipe & Cadbury Dairy Milk: 4.8
These two scored high across the board (our only samples with tied scores), and both were noted for their exceptionally smooth, creamy texture. One tester described the Cadbury as having a “pure milk” flavor, and several agreed it was the “milkiest” milk chocolate. Everyone also liked the thin-but-not-too-thin shape of the Lindt bar.

Best Flavor
MilkBoy: 4.44
Chocolove: 4.3468
These two were also overall crowdpleasers (and the least recognizable by taste — no one had any idea what brand they might be). MilkBoy elicited the biggest response, flavor-wise, and testers said they tasted notes of raspberry, almond, and even mint. Chocolove was noted for its fruity sweetness — pleasant, but not overpowering. And everyone REALLY liked the domed shape of the squares.

Best Shape & Texture
Dove: 4.5
Ritter Sport Fine Milk Chocolate: 4.38
Whole Foods 365: 4.182
One definite takeaway from this taste test? Shape matters. Like Chocolove, the Dove bar is portioned into small, domed squares. That alone nudged its score up, and it was one of the surprise favorites (though some found it a little too sweet). Another surprise was the Whole Foods 365 bar, which was praised for its texture. One described it as “waxy and SO good.” (I have to agree, the “waxiness” yields a satisfying bite.) Ritter Sport, with its chunky squares, also got high marks on shape, texture, and its pleasant dissolve. And it’s worth noting that, although the official testers weren’t blown away, Ritter Sport was the grown-up favorite by far (Joanna and I tried them before the kids arrived, and kept our lips zipped during testing).

The Outliers
Trader Joe’s: 4.2682
Endangered Species: 3.84
One tester declared the Trader Joe’s sample a 5/5, right off the bat — no notes, loved everything about it. The rest of the testers responded with a resounding meh. A similar thing happened with Endangered Species, which many testers thought was an accidental dark-chocolate addition (it has a higher cocoa content and definitely could be confused for dark). One tester LOVED it, while everyone else (myself included) found it too hard, too bitter, and just too intense. No one wanted a second bite.

The Least Favorite
Hershey’s Symphony Bar: 3.8
Ouch! Remember when Symphony Bars were the fancy chocolate? Times have changed. These kids were NOT impressed. “It just tastes like a s’more.”

The Big Winner
Tony’s Chocolonely: 4.98
It wasn’t even close, y’all. Tony’s was the winner, beloved by all. While it wasn’t deemed the most anything — not the creamiest, sweetest, etc. — I actually think that worked in its favor. The balance was just right. Another big plus was size and shape: Tony’s is a decidedly chonky bar of chocolate, and it breaks apart into a bunch of uneven hunks, which is oddly satisfying. The brand recognition was definitely a factor here (“I got the lucky part!” one tester said, taking the little coin-shaped piece in the center), but I suspect this would have been the winner either way. Tony’s is both good chocolate and fun chocolate. And, really, what more can you ask for?

A big thanks to our wonderful judges, Anton, Nick, Juliet, Ella, and Sienna! Any other milk chocolate fans out there? Do you have a favorite?
P.S. More taste tests, including the best vanilla ice cream and our favorite pasta sauce.

117 commentsJust popping back in here on Mother’s Day as I’m riding the train with my family from Amsterdam to Paris and eating my custom Tony’s Chocolonely bar I had custom made at the chocolate shop in Amsterdam! I had never tried this chocolate before and got curious after reading this post, added it to our dream vacation itinerary and let me just say YUM! I chose to have a dark chocolate bar made with sea salt toffee and coffee bits and they let you customize your wrapper. Fun for everyone!
I love Endangered Species Milk Chocolate. All of the others are mostly sugar with very little actual chocolate.
Ritter Sport is our family’s favorite chocolate – it simply tastes amazing. The “Whole Hazelnut” variety has the perfect balance of nuts and chocolate. The “Yogurt” one, especially when chilled from the fridge, is wonderfully fresh and my absolute favorite. And my son loves the version with cornflakes. We live very close to the factory in Waldenbuch, where my son celebrated his 8th birthday. Together with his friends, he got to create his own chocolate bars with different toppings like sprinkles and marshmallows. They all had so much fun! We also really enjoy visiting the museum there, especially its unique collection of square-themed art.
This sounds like an incredible party, Silke! Ritter Sport was introduced to me by a European colleague when I was in my mid-20s and I’ve spent the last 15 years making up for lost time in a big way :) It’s also something we stock up on when we make periodic trips abroad – so many good flavors we don’t have in the US! My kids are obsessed with the one that has buttery crackers inside and while that’s not my personal favorite, I totally get why they love it.
There’s something special about the whole hazelnuts…chopped hazelnuts in a chocolate bar just aren’t the same! I have such fond memories of taking the bus from Tuebingen to visit the Ritter Sport factory with friends when I studied there. What a beautiful place to live!
We just did this with root beers and it was SO fun! My kids loved Barqs and hated A&W!
A question – this is such a great idea, and has inspired me. I am planning a “sleep under” party for my to be 8 yo daughter. I bet her friends would love a taste test – what is a good idea to taste test for that age group?
I did a chip taste test with my nephews (7 and 6) last summer and everyone thought that was fun!
Also really love that Tony’s is slave free and has strong human rights and environmental commitments. I make a point of buying their chocolate.
Russian here, and nothing beats Kinder chocolate to me😂
My husbnad volunteers for a local food pantry that caters to anyone and everyone in the community. Because he helps so much, they sometimes just give him things to bring home. He came home with BARS of Tony’s one week. I had never tried it before becuase it’s fairly pricey, but holy moly! Never looking back. We live close to Hershey, PA so that’s what we are used to but that stuff legit tastes gross in comparison. Tony’s is amazing! I love the sea salt caramel bar. Now I’m on the hunt for Tony’s wherever I go and I told him he’s more than welcome to accept anything that the pantry wants to gift him in the future that has Tony’s name on it!
Not sure if you have a Grocery outlet in your area but they often have Toneys for a fraction of the price! I love the brand as well
How fun! The winner is clear! Tony’s mini pouch has been a s’more fav for a while. https://us.tonyschocolonely.com/products/variety-pack-tiny-tonys-pouch
Lindt always and forever😊
Could not have clicked on this faster. I will now peer review your findings by replicating your test and conducting my own evaluation. You’re welcome.
Women in STEM baby!
haha yes! Love this.
Great article! Huge milk chocolate fan + love the pics!!
A few years ago, my brother-in-law brought me a bar of Tony’s Christmas chocolate with a little crisp and a gluwine spiced flavour. It was amazing. The year after, I managed to buy a few bars online when I didn’t see it in the shops. Since then I haven’t been able to get ahold of it, even though I was prepared to go to great lengths (it was available on Tony’s Dutch site – could a colleague bring me back a bunch of bars from the Netherlands?) Anyways – if you see it: run don’t walk!
Mina, I don’t know where you live, but you can usually find Tony’s at Whole Foods and Cost Plus World Market! We even scored a Tony’s Advent calendar at World Market last year and it was glorious.
My son turned 13 last week and I took him and his friends on a surf trip for the weekend (I’ve done it for the past two years and hopefully will keep doing it until they are able to drive themselves and no longer need me to do it). We had a lot of fun and they were the happiest I’ve seen them, but this idea would have been absolutely brilliant. I’ll definitely do it next year! (Note to say I once promoted a “healthy-homemade-chciken-nuggets-hot-ones-contest” after taking them to an asian supermarket and letting them choose several spicy condiments and it was epic, even though it ended in tears). Also, my favorite milk chocolate is Cadbury’s :)
Excellent choice! I go to an annual conference for work and always make a point of stopping by the stand for one specific software provider because they give away full size (branded) Tony Chocolonely bars.
Tony’s! If anyone visits Amsterdam, I recommend going to the Tony Chocolonely Super Store there. You can make your own personalized chocolate bar – so fun!
If you can ever get your hands on some Norwegian Milk Chocolate AKA Melkesjokolade it is considered our national treasure (FOR A REASON!)
I studied abroad in Norway and a friend wallpapered a room in wrappers from melkesjokolade!! It’s so good.
Tony’s is both delicious and ethically sourced (a truly rare combination, alas), but everyone in my house (including me) hates, HATES the irregular scoring. We just want to be able to portion out our chocolate in equitable, evenly sized doses! Not awkward, wrong-size annoying doses!! nnnnnng! gah! why!!!
I love everything about this — I was rooting for it to be Tony’s, and gratified when it took the top rating! But probably what tickled me most (NERD ALERT) is noticing that the very precise decimal score is taken directly from the digits of pi. May my daughter be that nerdy/cool when she gets to middle school!
Fellow nerd here who also immediately noticed!
I want to do this in our house!!
After seeing documentaries about child slave labor in cocoa production, I only buy Tony’s. And it is delicious! When I give my kids’ teachers gifts, I give them a bar of Tony’s. Always well received!
I held my breath all the way to the end! I never really liked or craved milk chocolate (white chocolate gal), until I had Tony’s, now I find myself bargaining for one last chunk. And it tastes even better when it’s at cooler temps, so just as it is thawing coming out of the freezer. Yum! This absolutely made my day.
As a dedicated chocoholic, I did not need to read this article (although I did anyway) because I already knew Tony’s would be the winner. I used to favor Cadbury’s but Tony’s has mastered the same flavor but somehow it is more intense and less milky? Now if only I could stop myself once I open a bar….
Excuse me while I go enjoy a Tony’s bar:)
For my daughter’s 11th birthday, we had a big party with a pickle taste test station. It was a blast! Who knew there were dozens (hundreds?) of pickle flavors?! We had spicy, salty, kosher, dill, sweet, icicle, garlic, jalapeno, and even more flavors to taste. There was no clear winner, but it was a tasty crowd-pleaser for all ages!
We had a candy-tasting party with a complicated rating system for the candy that my kids devised. It was a ton of fun.
Oooo could we get a post (or a comment section) on creative kids’ bday party ideas? I’d love to hear more stuff like this!
+1 for posts on creative bday parties for kids
I can’t believe I’ve never tried Toney’s! I’ll grab some. I’ve been a diehard fan of Cadbury for years but I consider truly elite milk chocolate to be the British Cadbury bars. So creamy!
Let us never forget the brave and noble service of these children :)
Two thumbs up for at home head to head taste tests! I’m in. As someone who eats a little chocolate but not a lot, I’ve been eyeing up the Tony – I’ll be getting a bar. <3
Love this post and will be sharing with my family, a I am the lone dark chocolate lover in a family of milk chocolate die-hards! For those of you in NYC and/or traveling to NYC, Economy Candy is a great place to go if you want to recreate this taste test! They have every chocolate brand under the sun, including the OG Cadbury varieties from the UK (which are SO much better than the ones we get in the US it’s like a different chocolate all together.) One last side note about sustainability and chocolate–our family was lucky enough to take a trip to Costa Rica this winter and to visit a family run chocolate farm! We got to see the cacao trees growing, taste the fruit and see the process of how it gets turned into chocolate (guys, did you know that it’s mosquitos that pollinate the cacao plants?!? Or that it takes 30 DAYS to go from cacao beans to actual chocolate?!?) My mind was truly blown by everything that goes into making chocolate and I now have even more reverence for this magical food–I will never look at chocolate bars the same way again! If you ever have the chance to go see chocolate grown in the wild and meet the amazing farmers who make it possible for us to enjoy it, please go!
I discovered Economy Candy during the pandemic, thanks to an NYC friend – I still haven’t been to the store yet but the images are soooo enticing!
This is so cute!! PS It would be so nice to see who wins the Babaa contest in their sweater when it arrives!
Is there anything better than a group of 7th graders?!? (Close second: a gaggle of 3rd grade boys.) Like other readers, I loved this post. A few months ago, my 7th grade daughter and her friends booted us out of our kitchen and set up a drink/smoothie taste test for us where they all created their own concoctions and had us vote on them. They named each one and made a sign for it (think: Marley’s Magical Tropic Crush) and watched us with HAWK EYES to see our reactions as we tasted them. It was SO fun. (PS: For anyone who must know, Marley won.)
As a Dutch girl and chocolate lover this makes me very happy! I kept reading and slightly panicking thinking ‘but where’s Tony??’, only to find they’ve won the overall taste test. Great read and utterly adorable kids!
Elze I had the same!! I was like, when are we going to get the Tony’s love? It was a surprisingly suspensful experience haha.
My favorite is the same as the other adults – rittersport. It is sooo good. I can’t eat chocolate really anymore sadly as it troubles my stomach.
Dairy Milk is my all-time favourite – and the absolute best, of course.
Low-key neighborhood hang at Anton’s? Uncontested 5/5
Tony’s is great, but I wholeheartedly stand by Trader Joes, but you have to get the GIGANTIC pound plus bar, I swear its better than the small ones. Might be the heft.
I was happy to see Tony’s win. Ever since I saw John Oliver’s piece on the use of slave labor in the production of chocolate, and Tony’s commitment not to use slave labor, I try to only purchase Tony’s. It’s definitely more expensive, but that’s the trade off for ethical sourcing.
It made me so happy that Tony’s won since it is ethically produced!
I somehow read “I cannot fault the children for being precise” as “I cannot fault the children for being people.” Oof, that one hit me right in the mothering gut. You cannot fault them for being people! Adding to all of the praises Joanna sings of preteens, this (albeit misread) statement felt so warm and lovely and has me looking forward to preteen years with my own boys (currently 6 and 8).
What a fun post!!! I love Ritter bars with whole hazelnuts and my all time favorite is Milka (plain milk chocolate) from Germany. I tried it for the first time in elementary school and it tasted like heaven.
Same! Ritter sport for the win
I don’t do dairy and even if I did would always opt for dark chocolate, but loved this nonetheless. Please do more of these taste tests – lightened up my week for sure!
I bought the Tony’s mini egg sampler pack for my kid’s Easter basket this year, but he will not be enjoying it because I already ate them all. I can always get more, right?
Bahhaa! That sounds like something I might have done before!
Haha 😂
Haha this post reminded me I randomly got some of those for my girls last year and was surprised by delicious they were. Will be getting some again soon!
I’ve always been dissuaded from buying Tony’s by the price and size. Apparently I need to rethink my decisions!
It’s more expensive because they only source cocoa from farms that don’t exploit workers/children. Worth it IMO!
I love the wholesome corners of the internet! For my fellow dark chocolate Stans, if you haven’t yet tried Dr Bronners Magic Chocolate bars, find them ASAP! The coconut praline is the stuff of dreams. Also ethically sourced and regenerative (cacao is a great companion plant to palm which they source for their soaps— it’s a cool story).
I’m so addicted to Dr. Bronner’s chocolate. Two rectangles of the Roasted Almond every night for me. Highly recommend and a great company to support.
I cannot speak to milk chocolate because that is not my jam, but my local Aldi carries Tony Chocolonely bars. They are not marked as such on the outer wrapper, although they look like Tony’s. But the inner wrappers straight up use the brand name.
And they are very good! My fave is the one in the orange wrapper and when Lent ends I’ll be back to my Friday chocolate bar ritual. It’s enough of a thing that my 4 year old reminds my husband to get mama her chocolate bar when he goes grocery shopping 😅
When I was thirteen, I baby sat two tweens who were barely younger than me for the summer. We used to walk across the street to their elderly neighbor’s house. He lived alone in a mega cool house full of mega cool things. We would sit at a little card table surrounded by crazy plants and play King’s corners for points while he broke open a big ol’ Hershey’s Symphony bar. Heck yes I thought that was the fanciest of chocolate then! LOL Love this post!!!!
Why does the thought of this fun afternoon make me a little…weepy?? Is it because children are so pure? And who doesn’t want to partake in a chocolate taste test? Makes me want to ask my 8 year old if she would like to throw some kind of taste-testing party.
Right?! I want to throw a taste test party for my junior in college when he comes home this summer. Such tenderness in this post, and in your comment.
Milk chocolate fan here! I snacked on a Tony’s milk chocolate toffee pretzel bar as I read this. Their chocolate is delicious, and their cause is wonderful, so they can have all my chocolate money! This was delightful to read and made me think about my 11 and almost 14! year old, and how their antics would have been the same. Love teenagers!
This post was exquisitely written! I don’t like milk chocolate. The writing here is so funny and lively. It really made me laugh (and I am not in a good mood). Love from Paris
“And I am not in a good mood” = made me lol. Thanks for being here, Agnes!
+1 for Tony’s!!! It’s non genocidal and ethically sourced. Cadbury is not even chocolate (look up!) and sided with Israel in butchering Gaza- no thank you.
Hana Now I want Tony’s. Thanks for that 🇵🇸♥️
This was such a fun post! It brightened my Wednesday considerably :)
I knew Tony’s would win! I agree the balance is perfect in every way. And the shapes are so fun to hack off.
Yay! I think they were spot on. I LOVE Tony’s. I only sadly noticed the chocolonely part of the branding recently, in my mind it was chocoloney. I feel slightly saddened by the name but love the taste. :)
Same, Lina! I had to look at it twice and thought “Wait…what?”
One of their Instagram posts last year had this explanation for their name (but you can find the same explanation in many places online): “[O]ur full name is Tony’s ChocoloneLy, not Tony’s Chocoloney. It’s a nod to Tony’s lonely fight against exploitation in the cocoa industry. Yeppp, Tony is a *real-life* person! A journalist, in fact, who found out about exploitation in cocoa, and decided that something needed to be done to prove we can solve this problem. That something, was Tony’s.”
The story about Tony’s is cool. I’ve sent the bars as gifts but never had one ! Gotta correct that ASAP !! Very good to know this about them ! I just always really liked the packaging and the size structure ! Thanks for this info about them.
Omg oh no!!!
Kate thank you for the background on Tony’s! This has been the purest post.
We have called it Chocoloney for years! I just noticed its “Chocolonely” when reading this post. I think we’re going to just keep calling it Chocoloney because tradition.
The Testers: 5/5 adorable.
As someone who spends far more time in Schipol airport than any one person should, there is never a layover where I don’t buy Tonys haha. There’s always a trip to the Tony’s store once I caffeinate myself sufficiently. I flew through Paris this week for once instead and was sad that I couldn’t go to Tony’s!!
Having given up all sweet food for lent, this was a tough read, ha! Roll on Easter, I can’t wait for a Cadbury’s creme egg. Tony’s is delicious and I’m also very partial to Milka.
I stared down a milk boy bar in the checkout line a while back. I may try it now!
The girl with the long decimal rating wrote down a number sequence involved in “pi”. While the first digit before the decimal is (intentionally) wrong, the ensuing sequence (on her paper, not Miller’s retelling), makes me think her teacher probably had a “pi” memorization contest that day haha.
This is amazing
Omg yes! She says she has memorized 124 of the digits (and counting). Preteens are SO COOL.
We named our cat Tony Chocolonely: a family tribute to one of the greatest. Our dog, Toblerone, is named for our other favorite.
So cute!!!!
Wait this makes me laugh bc their nicknames could be Tony and Tobs, which are my kids’ nicknames (Anton = Tony; Toby = Tobes) :)
Amazing!
As I sat down to nap with my baby (not before eating my own milk chocolate bar…) I clicked on this post! I love the natural grocers milk chocolate, but Tony’s has to be my fave. Also, South Africa has a Cadbury chocolate bar called “top deck” and it’s white chocolate and milk chocolate stacked in each square. It may be the yummiest thing I’ve ever tasted.
Top Deck is the BEST!! Was my favorite when I lived in Eswatini and my dad still brings me some back when he travels to the area.
Great reviews! As a serious chocoholic who grew up on German Milka and eventually switched to Swiss Lindt, I was shocked to discover my new hands down favorite milk chocolate in the UK: Green & Blacks. SO GOOD! I unexpectedly transited through London airport last month and greedily stuffed 50 GBP worth of those bars into my purse.
Oh man, I miss green and blacks!!! (Though the sainsbury’s basics bars are better than they should be too)
Yep, Green and Blacks, blue 37% Milk bar. I always keep back-up bars in the house. For medicinal purposes. It cures all ailments. There is literally nothing better – it’s like Nesquik but in solid form. And I have tried alotta chocolate. Including Tony’s (which I found super sweet and a bit overstimulating / anxiety inducing).
This post was thrilling and heartwarming to read. Thank you so much for sharing. I have a 3.5 yo and now I can’t wait for him to be old enough to do taste testings like this.
It gets better and better, imo! Xoxoxo
Hi Joanna, this is not on the topic of this post, but I wonder if you (or Christine) would ever address inter-racial friendships. I am Asian and, together with my husband, adopted a Black girl a couple years ago. I think a lot about inter-racial friendships – both that I have and that she has/will have. It warms my heart to see Anton with his Black friend and wonder if you ever talk with Anton about their friendship and if so, what you discuss. We see a Black female play therapist, so we talk about this topic with her, and I seek out books and articles on it as well – but I’m always wanting more!
I love this idea! And congratulations on your dear daughter. At lunch today, I watched a group of 12 teen boys loudly gather at a nearby table, hanging on each other and joking as teen boys do. It was made up of kids of all colors and they all were eating foods from around the world. The Middle Eastern kid had a poke bowl & chopsticks, Asian kid had tacos, Caucasian kid had a curry bowl, Black and Hispanic kid had Korean bbq. Their joy and friendship were infectious and I couldn’t help but think, this is what makes America special.
The fave in our house is all-rounder Cadbury Dark Chocolate, which is super creamy and sits just on the cusp of dark chocolate-y-ness. It tastes like very rich milk chocolate and smells wonderful 🤎
Wow! I’m so glad I didn’t scroll to the bottom first…Tony’s has been our household favorite for years (The best part is that it’s slave-free, fair trade chocolate, which is the only kind I will eat after reading an article about kids in the chocolate slave trade a few years ago. :( Unfortunately zero TJs chocolate products are fair trade.) I was so surprised that it wasn’t coming up in this post…surely it didn’t fail ALL these measures? And then, seeing it as the overall winner: TRIUMPH.
Thank you for bringing this topic up, Joy. I truly believe that the more people know the better choices they make (it only takes a moment to look up chocolate and the enslavement of children, or the effects of palm oil). Setting aside individual favorites for the greater good, and by doing so, positively steering the direction of all life. There is so much possibility, especially when we have a large audience, to do this! Sometimes I wonder if many people are convinced they are powerless? Whenever I feel like this I pull myself out of it by remembering exactly who benefits from my feelings of powerlessness! Alter Eco chocolate for the win!
Slightly correct, but one note: Trader Joe’s Fair Trade Organic 72% Cacao Belgian Dark Chocolate Bar is a explicitly labeled Fair Trade option. I think that’s the only one, though.
Doesn’t this photo make everyone want to go teach middle school?!? I just taught in my daughter’s 6th grade class — so much fun. I adore this age group.
For Valentine’s Day, my sweetie gave me a box of Tony’s chocolate bars. It was so fun (and so freaking delicious). I had never heard of the brand before, but when I saw the picture at the top of this post, I KNEW it would be a winner. Not only do I love the chocolate, but the design overall is really rad.
Tony’s Chocolonely is amazing and who doesn’t love the lucky center piece? However, I’m leaning in with the adults here and jumping up and down for Ritter. While their chocolate quality is comparable to Chocolonely, Ritter has a bar with candied corn flakes that is UH-MAZING! As soon as Chocolonely comes up with their own corn flake bar, I’ll be headed their way. Until then, I’m a Ritter fan! This was such a fun article. Kelsey’s writing always makes me laugh. Anton and his friends must have had a blast with this assignment.
First, I invite you all to join my post-punk gender-bending band, MilkBoy and the Sweet Teeth. We sew our own stage costumes and trick or treat every night (no excuses). Second, I have a fondness for what is known as the slightly puke-y taste of Hershey’s chocolate, which is due to the butyric acid* created as a side-product of the lipolysis it undergoes to be shelf-stable. Not saying it’s my FAVORITE milk chocolate, but I’m a sentimental dirtbag, and that je ne sais barf really takes me back to childhood. I insist on carob chips on frozen yogurt for Proustian reasons as well. *Someone accidentally cracked some butyric acid in my high school chemistry class and it was like when Bella and Edward were lab partners in the first TWILIGHT movie. 10/10 teen drama moment, I couldn’t stop laughing.
“Je ne sais barf” had me dying! Immediately adding the phrase to my mental catalog.
Hahahaahahah
Somebody in my senior year knicked a flask of butyric acid from the chem lab whilst we were making esters (it’s the chemical/flavouring in banana lollies). BARF is exactly right; that stuff STINKS.
Ritter Sport Dark chocolate with marzipan filling is so, so good!
This is my go to!! I call it mom chocolate because it’s the only candy I buy that nobody else in my house eats, so it’s all mine!!!
I love the marzipan but not safe from my kiddos lol. My favourite is the rum raisin and hazelnut. Definitely an adult bar!
