Have a Loving (Long) Weekend.

What are you up to this weekend? Tonight we’re having a movie night with friends, and tomorrow maybe we’ll order a heart-shaped pizza. Have a good one — happy Valentine’s Day to those who celebrate — and here are a few links from around the web…
Omg this married couple arguing about AI made me laugh out loud.
The 50 most underappreciated movies of the 21st century. What would you add?
Great news: RMS is 20% off sitewide (plus a gift with purchases over $100). I’ve been wearing their sheer glowy sunscreen every day, it’s SO good.
At the height of his quadruple axel, Olympic figure skater Ilia Malinin is spinning at 350 rpm, “about the same as a kitchen stand mixer.”
Love how The Good Trade editors test hundreds of products at home — sofas, robes, even lube — to find the best non-toxic, sustainable recs. (Their favorite organic mattresses are on sale this weekend.)
30 extremely niche things I adore, from my friend Erika Veurink, including “an unencumbered butter to bread ratio,” “podcasts at 1.3x speed but never faster,” and “locating a local British purveyor.” (gift link)
More couples than ever are living with roommates. The photos in this piece are so funny. (NYTimes gift link)
How sweet is this: the national maternal mental health hotline is 833-TLC-MAMA.
Thinking about making chocolate budino this weekend, yum.
“Eight interior design tricks I learned from working at home magazines.”
* Get 30% off almost everything at J.Crew, including my favorite ever pajamas.
* Get an extra 30% off sale at Madewell, like this beautiful sweater.
* And Nordstrom is having a huge end-of-season sale. Time for a bath glove!
Plus, three reader comments:
Says Kelly on a weekend recap: “Fun story: at the 2024 Paris Olympics, I won a contest that allowed people to run the Olympic marathon course between the men’s and women’s events. THE SAME COURSE. The race started at 9 p.m., and I’ve never smiled so hard in my entire life. My finish time was nowhere near the Olympians’, but it was a magical experience to run the same route, along with 20,000 other smiley amateurs from all over the world.”
Says Gisela on a weekend recap: “My Puerto Rican family, friends, and co-workers were sooooo excited for Bad Bunny’s half-time show. His performance was a moment of unity and joy — a bright light in the darkness. It meant so much to me, especially with everything happening regarding ICE and immigration. His message of love being stronger than hate hit so close to home, and watching him showcase our Puerto Rican culture with no apology, while also acknowledging all the other countries in the Americas, was truly breathtaking.”
Says Kath on three cool sweaters: “I bought the Dept of Invisible Labor hat faster than you can say ‘Can you make me a list?’”

95 commentsI would add Torn Curtain to the list of under -appreciated movies. It’s a 1966 Alfred Hitchcock film starring Julie Andrews and Paul Newman (I really don’t have to say anything more, do I?!). It’s long been considered Hitchcock’s worst “flop,” but it’s one of my favorite movies of all time. The plot keeps moving, the espionage and danger are intriguing, and the score is out of this world. 10/10!!!
On listening to podcasts: I highly recommend listening to podcasts at a slower speed when trying to fall asleep (or after waking at 3am). If you choose one that is quiet, only mildly interesting and then listen at 0.75x it is really relaxing. Set your sleep timer to turn off after 15, 30 or 45 minutes and you’re set. If you’re lucky, you’ll miss most of it but that’s the point. One that works for me is the Amateur Traveler podcast. The host’s voice is monotone–perfect!
Also Nothing Much Happens – designed for this! The story is read once at regular speed, and then repeated more slowly. It’s magic.
Does anyone else find you have to scroll the Link Lists in a very particular way to be able to get the links to be clickable?
Yes! On this site, when I click a link too close to the top of the browser window it doesn’t work, but when I scroll the link down to the middle of the page it does!
I have often found the links unclickable but didn’t realize I could solve it with creative scrolling! Thanks for this tip!
oh also, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty – love this movie!
Where’d You Go, Bernadette. Read the book and totally ‘got’ it, then, surprise, the movie comes out with of all people: Cate Blanchett! And she was amazing in it. I really relate to the character and the story line though, so much so I might be biased but I think this is a brilliant book/movie. To have captured the mechanics of ‘crazy’ in a smart, talented woman that even her husband, who should know better, writes off – it’s just the kind of ineffable tweak that keeps women from progressing because no one can see past the ‘crazy’. A brilliant illustration of this and message to all about how to handle it.
Paul Rudd forever and ever ❤️🍕
This!
To my fellow broken-hearted, here is a gift article: https://www.nytimes.com/2026/02/10/realestate/starting-at-harvard-and-falling-for-your-first-tree.html?unlocked_article_code=1.LVA.iRn1.oF53Jzl0D1Mv&smid=url-share this part made me weep, I love it so much: “Perhaps the reading that lies closest to the heart of the seminar is Carson McCullers’s ‘A Tree, a Rock, a Cloud,’ a short story first published in 1942. In it, a young paperboy enters a cafe to buy a coffee. A man in the corner, hunched over a beer mug, calls out to him. ‘I love you,’he says to the young man, and then proceeds to describe how his heart opened to such spontaneity, and the origin of his what he calls his ‘science’ of love. Years earlier, his wife had left him for another man, and he recounts a yearsl ong struggle that followed, until a revelation — a letting go — brought peace. To make another person the object of the first steps on your life’s journey in loving, as he had with his wife, the man had come to believe, is too fast too soon. ‘Son, do you know how love should be begun?’ he asks, then leans in to whisper the secret: ‘A tree. A rock. A cloud.’ ‘I can love anything,’ he tells the boy. ‘No longer do I have to think about it even. I see a street full of people and a beautiful light comes in me. I watch a bird in the sky. Or I meet a traveler on the road. Everything, Son. And anybody. All stranger and all loved! Do you realize what a science like mine can mean?'”
Love this so much. Really resonates with how I feel ab life
An underappreciated film, and one I always recommend to everyone, is Captain Fantastic starring Viggo Mortensen. It explores the idea of raising your children with the purest, most anti-establishment ethos, free of all the influences of capitalism. It addresses the consequences of choosing not to conform, good and bad, and it also looks at grief and family relationships. It is a thought-provoking, gripping film and should not have gone under the radar like it did.
Agree, agree.
Yes!! This is such a good film.
Yes! Fantastic exploration of family living by their values, and their version of Sweet Child of Mine is so beautiful.
Wow this sounds great. Thank you ! “Choosing not to conform” I love stories about alternative living/ lifestyles. Will check this out !
On underappreciated films – Stranger Than Fiction. Will Ferrell (in a different type of role than many of his other films), Maggie Gyllenhall, Emma Thompson, Queen Latifah, and Dustin Hoffman. Little did he know…
I was just talking about this yesterday!! So much to love about that movie. “I brought you flours.”
Need to revisit this movie.
I’ve written books on ‘little did he know’!!
100% one of my all time faves!
Oh yes, I love this movie too! Will Ferrell’s movies aren’t usually for me, but he plays such a different character than usual in this. It is truly sweet.
This movie is brilliant and shows that Will Ferrell is a thoughtful sensitive actor, not just a wonderful comedian!
Sharing this poem I came across. How I Met Your Mother by George Bilgere I saw her at a party, walked up and said, I wonder if you would mind getting married, buying a house, enduring the agony of childbirth a couple of times, watching a lot of Netflix together, dining out (I’m thinking, specifically, of the osso buco at Rugerri’s), getting a dog, negotiating mortgages, and finally sitting by me in those last days, arranging the funeral, tidying up, then starting your strange new life, the one without me. Is that too much to ask? And she sipped her mojito and said, what are we waiting for?
Love it! Thanks for sharing.
🥹 thank you for sharing
Wow, I love this. Thanks for sharing.
I quite love this! Thanks for sharing.
Crying!! Loved this.
This is heart wrenching. I love it. I actually read this comment the other day but did not even know how to respond, it moved me so much. It all goes so fast, a life. I love the last line.
I’m so heartbroken for Ilia 😭😭 but similar thing happened to Nathan, I know ilia will come back better & stronger!
It was heartbreaking to watch. He handled it very well and he will be back!
I totally agree! My name is also Eva and I said this same thing, effectively verbatim, to a friend yesterday, so I had to do a double take to make sure I did not already submit this comment. Great minds!
Lovely links as usual, I look forward to the weekend email every week. But the niche gift link doesn’t seem to work for me, not sure if I’m the only one?
We figured it out: You just have to open in a browser. It doesn’t work in the app (such a pain!).
Thank you, Alice and Jo (and Erica!) ❤️❤️❤️ Why are lists so fun and soothing?
I didnt know about the TLC being spelled in the hotline for maternal health. Touching! I remember calling that number almost daily when I had my 4th baby. It shocked me bc it i had not been bad with the others, but I had a very quick vaginal surprise breech birth and as grateful as I was that and the breech baby was able to be delivered naturally i found myself googling and very worried overWhat could have gone wrong. I would silently cry when the sun would set. Nights would feel so alone and long. My daughter had a tongue ties with feeding was very stressful to nurse. I was triple feeding which was pumping and bottle feeding and nursing and was every bit as hectic as it sounds. It’s no wonder that I felt so sad. I would call that number if I would try to go for a walk. I would just call that number and the moms that would pick up were supportive and would listen and make me feel less alone, and it was free. And that was really special and valued to me. Im tearing up writing about this because I forgot about me calling them. I would just tell them I feel.so.sad and they made me feel normal. I wish I could thAnk them and give my postpartum self a big hug. Oof.
RfQ, I wish I could give your postpartum self (which is your now self too since my teacher taught us that once we’re pregnant even if the fetus is never born, we’re always postpartum) a big hug too. I found this idea from my teacher wildly comforting like Oh even though my pp time with each of my three kids was a cluster*, it’s not too late! It sounds like you were working so hard and doing such a good job keeping yourself and your babies safe, loved, fed, and as happy as you were capable in that moment. Brava to you! I take care of postpartum women for my job and didn’t know about this number. What a relief that it supported you when you needed it and I’ll be sure to have it on my resource list from now on. Sending you a big hug.
RfQ, this is beautiful. Thank you for sharing. The postpartum isolation can be so so hard. I am so glad that lifeline was there for you! ♥️
Is your friend Erika nursing // in new mom days? I craved and ate SO many slices of baguette with giant slabs of butter (so much) while in the deep throes of nursing!! it just tasted so good. Loved her list!

Hillary! One-ingredient chocolate mousse had me running to the kitchen stat. Made it. Ate it. Sent recipe to friends. Water + chocolate? Just trust, friends. Proof to “…stay for the comments”
Jan, she’s a keeper! So glad you enjoyed!
Calendar Girls is one of my absolute favorite movies of all time. It’s a subtle character film. It got ok reviews, whatever. But the celebration of women in their prime never gets old.
Agree wholeheartedly!! Love this film too.
Thrilled to be here
Well said, Gisela!
Regarding “an unencumbered butter to bread ratio,” one should see teeth marks through the butter after each bite. It’s a universal truth.
This made me laugh out loud. My late husband was a butter fiend and this is what his bread looked like!
haha yes! love that
There’s even a word for it! https://languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?p=4323
” In our house, butter’s a side dish ” as my husband says. I’m the butter fiend but he caught on. Ha.
This!
I am thinking of all of us feeling meh this Valentine. I met someone two months ago , though he was just overly shy and introverted, tried everything to make him notice me , left with a broken heart and so many unanswered questions. I bet he has no clue I’m feeling this bad. I’ll spend the day with my dog and probably bake something. There will be some tears . Hugs to all of you feeling sad
Lea that’s so hard. The undeniable truth of any relationship is that it has to be two-sided and this one wasn’t. I am so grateful for all the crushes and dates that didn’t work out now. I would have been miserable long term wasting my energy on someone uninterested in reciprocating. Future you deserves someone who meets you as a partner and is in it full hearted. I hope that he is somewhere nearby soon.
Movie that should be on the list—Magic Mike XXL. A sweet movie about dudes being bros and making a variety of fantasies come true for a subset of women. Do you like being serenaded? They got you. Do you like men wearing hammer pants and dancing to boy bands from the early 2000s? They got you. Do you want someone to just want to put a smile on your face by being silly?? THEY GOT YOU. Do you want to by lying on a massage table while someone takes a running start to jump over the table??? They didnt forget about you either. When so many movies focus on how women are male fantasies, this one focuses on (a limited assortment) of men being female fantasies. It’s good natured and they like women and they just want to dance in ways that display who they are. Top comfort movie.
My husband had never seen either of the first two Magic Mikes, and I told him “We’re skipping the first one and going straight to XXL. It’s everything you would’ve wanted from the first one without all the unnecessary drama.” Just nice dudes taking their clothes off and dancing really well!
100% YES!
I don’t know about movies, but one of the most under appreciated tv shows is Justified. It’s one of the few shows where I actually liked the women characters. They were written strong and not the stereotypical nag, like I dunno, Ozark. It was also my intro to Walter Goggins, who was so good in it. And Timothy Olyphant is super easy on the eyes.
I completely agree, Jane! In addition to the characters, the arcs (over and across seasons) and the story were so amazing in the original Justified. Not to mention Timothy Olyphant.
We get hardly any holidays off and I swear our board forgets that life is supposed to be fun. Grateful for a job, but come on… let’s all remember it’s a joy to be human.
Hey Joanna, happy weekend! Just FYI, there are a ton of ads showing up on the post today that were pretty distracting. On this post, there were three ads embedded in the text body of the post, a banner along the bottom (which could be x-ed out, but then reappeared), and a video add in the bottom right corner (which appeared, disappeared, then reappeared 3-4 times). This is not at all a criticism of you having ads—I fully support how COJ works so hard to bring us all the posts and staff we love—but wanted to share that this seemed quite out of the ordinary!
This definitely shouldn’t be happening — I’ll go back to our ad team!
Just in case it’s helpful, if you use duck duck go as your internet browser, there are no ads.
Jo, in searching rms it reminded me of mascara from Nordstrom you recommended around Christmas. Do you remember what it was perhaps? Also: I take care of moms post partum and that number is gold. Thank you!
yes!! here’s the mascara: https://nordstrom.sjv.io/e1VROz I also really like Ilia mascara. xoxo thank you!
I don’t love it. :( I bought a tube around Christmas and it irritates my eyes. I may have gotten a bad bottle. I really would love to find a good mascara. Not too cakey and natural looking with a hint of curl.
The RMS mention made me so nostalgic for circa 2015-16 when we were all obsessed with the Living Luminizer thanks to Caroline and Gemma. I totally wore it for years.
yes, so good!
Yes!
The “niche list” was fun but I could only read a few as a non-paid subscriber:-(
I asked Erika to create a gift link in for this exact reason, and she did it for us — so, you should be able to read the whole thing!
You may need to copy the link text and paste into a new tab instead of clicking on the link. I’ve had to do that for any gift substance link. https://longlive.substack.com/p/1387dbcb-4280-44f4-b765-6c81448ad4e7?postPreview=paid&updated=2026-02-10T16%3A42%3A44.035Z&audience=only_paid&free_preview=false&freemail=
Hi Joanna – Leigh is right that the link is not a gift link. Happy long weekend!
Just open in browser vs the app! Sorry for the hassle. Xoxo
I also couldn’t read the entire thing, nor the NYT article :(
Maybe this will help. I had to open it in a browser to get the gift link to work. I got the paid subscriber limit if it opened in the Substack app.
The gift link doesn’t appear to be working. Loved the first few!
YES to chocolate budino! I make Nigella Lawson’s recipe and it’s one of the best things I ever put in my mouth. Happy Valentine’s Day!
Not me reading this link list while wearing the Madewell sweater you included! Can confirm, it’s a cutie.
love that!
First, I have a gigantic, um, *appreciation* for Ilia Malinin’s and his LEGS. They are gorgeous. I hope he always keeps his fantastic humble nature, but I know that’s unlikely – he’s going to be showered with adoration, and at such an impressionable age. Oh well – here’s hoping he makes it through, soul intact! Meanwhile, I will enjoy following his work. In a combo of “couple arguing about AI” and “under-appreciated movies” category, I just re-watched Ex Machina last night…and…yeah. Let’s just say, I’ve taken up prayer.
the grace he showed congratulating the gold medalist from Kazakhstan! May we all be humbled by his sportsmanship – a true athlete and captured the spirit of the Olympics.
Solidarity with all the other readers who don’t have Monday off and will have to stare longingly as their spouses and friends and acquaintances all have fun, and we’re stuck at work.
My husband & I both work & the kids have school. We also don’t have MLK Jr day off for our school (or work) laaaame. I usually am reminded of these holidays when I see Joanna’s “happy long weekend posts” ha!
Yup, the worst is when you don’t have president’s day off, but your school age kids do, so you’re working and scrambling for childcare.
Laura, if you play hooky I PROMISE not to narc on you :)
right there with ya.
I worked weekends and holidays for 40 years. Then my hospital closed and since then my job changed and are now holiday and weekend free. It’s still a thrill. Although I must say I never minded too much. It was all I knew and me and my nurse friends had a ball back then. Still, it’s nice to be off. I think more people work weekends and holidays than not. Especially since we lost our manufacturing base in this country long ago and the majority of jobs are in retail. And it’s always been that way of course, in healthcare.
Very very grateful that i have monday off! however i am working today (saturday) and our business is open tomorrow (sunday), so i feel ya! working weekends is tough, but i make good money and have incredible health insurance, so it’s a tradeoff.
When I’m queen of the world, there will be A LOT more holidays. And vacation and sick days and whatever days too. We ALL work too much. Parent work schedules and school day schedules will be the same. Follow me for more “when I’m queen of the world” ideas!!
Or just move to Norway for an official four day work week…(I’ve heard; not verified). But we can create a different reality. Aren’t there any independent CEO’s reading this who can figure it out?
During an exit interview for a job I was leaving by choice/good terms, my hill to die on was making President’s Day an office holiday. I had been there 4 years and it sucked that first February, fully realizing we didn’t have it off, yet school and daycare did. It killed my moral for a stretch – there was no business case to insist on being open. And they changed the policy!! Four years at a good job and that’s what I’m most proud of. They all get long weekends because I pushed for it. Be vocal!
Just had a three day weekend in Canada (four for the kids thanks to a pro-d day tacked on), and I worked from home for three of the days. Sigh. Nothing like sitting in the bedroom trying to focus while everyone else hangs out.
