A Lion for Lunar New Year

Ruth Chan is an illustrator who lives in Brooklyn with her family. She writes and illustrates children’s books. For Cup of Jo, Ruth has written about many things, including pets, grief, OCD, moments of connection, and baby wonder. And here’s her beauty uniform and her favorite place to cry in public. xo
P.S. Lunar New Year memories, and an eight-minute film that made us cry.

41 commentsHow beautiful and heart-rending too
This reminds me of that guidance to write something specific in order to make it relatable. Thank you for sharing these memories and experiences with your readers, Ruth and Joanna! It also makes me confused, for the millionth time, why some segments of the world (hi, maga) balk at listening to memories and experiences that aren’t part of their subculture. Our humanity is our universal thread.
Thank you Ruth! I lost my father and welcomed my little girl (my first) in the same year. This resonate so much!
Oh, Ruth, how lovely.
How lovely this is! My heart!
Gong xi fa cai!

This is so beautiful. Made me cry and just feel so so grateful for your work Ruth. Thank you for sharing this with us and may there be many many good days and joyful dances ahead for you, your little lion, and all of your family, friends, and loved ones.
So beautiful ❤️
This is just so beautiful. We get through hard things together, indeed.
Three cheers for Ruth, she is a fantastic person in so many ways! Please keep doing what you do for kids and books Ruth, my daughter’s favorite book continues to be Uprooted!

❤️
Oh, I love this. Thank you Ruth!
Amazing work, as always, from Ruth! Thank you!
Love this so much. (Also, can I say how much I appreciate that CoJ supports artists and illustrators? I always look forward to posts like this!)
Beautiful. And yes, an opportunity to share that I loved your Christmas card post, Ruth!
Oh Ruth, this was just perfect and made me tear up! Wishing you and all the COJ readers a xīn nián kuài lè! Our house is all decorated for the new year, we had dumplings on little new year this past week (festival of the kitchen god), and a big family feast to look forward to next week. Celebrating the holiday is one of the things I’ve come to look forward to every year since I met my husband – we joke we have three new years now (Jewish, Gregorian, and Chinese) to get things right! ;) P.S. Ruth- I first found your work because of your BTS comic which was perfect… how excited is everyone for the new album/tour?!
So excited! Also, Ruth, this made me tear up!
Ruth is such a treasure. I get so excited when I see a post from her!
I love Ruth Chan’s art/work! <3
this made me boohoo. the little lion in me roars to the little lion in all of us here, together.
🫂
Big hugs to Ruth and everyone here. I hope the Year of the Horse brings us some good times. We could use some.
Wow did not expect to burst into tears just now. Happy New Year to all the little lions.
This is so darling, Ruth. 🥹♥️
I think each person’s “favorite place to cry in public” should be on every LinkedIn, Instagram etc profile :)
Okay, I’m not crying, YOU’RE crying! Love this so much. Thank you Ruth
It’s true, I am crying! :’)
Love this. Love following Ruth’s account on IG. This warms my soul so much. Honestly, I can’t wait to shed the year of the snake, the second half of 2025 had been an utter b!tch to me, repair and rebuilding is starting, and I can’t wait to sink the snake into the dark depths of hot lava and have it evaporate.
It sounds like you are perfectly primed to make the best use of the coming Year of the Water Horse! I am sending you (and all of us, really) vibey wishes for a gooooooood ride this year.
@Ellen M, thank you soooo much! I wish you the best too!
Sobbing…
This is beautiful! It made me cry because it is so achingly true. So much joy, loss, and hope all at once.
Ruth has such a wonderful way of communicating tender themes with her art and words!
❤️ (I needed this today! Thank you, Ruth, Joanna and team!)
