Big Salad’s Birthday Sale

This week only, we’re offering 20% off annual subscriptions to Big Salad, our weekly newsletter (and the #1 fashion/beauty publication on Substack). For $4/month, you will get every issue for a year — packed with fun finds, life realizations, and essays on sex, dating, love, marriage, divorce, parenting, and friendship — plus access to our deep archives.
Last Friday, I wrote about a dating realization I had that changed everything (gift link, free for all). The comments were truly incredible, and I felt really moved by the ability to share relationship (and life) highs and lows with women who really get it. We really are all in this together.
Here are a few more issues you may enjoy…
On sex, dating, relationships, and friendship:
The genius advice my therapist gave me when my marriage ended.
What it felt like to have sex for the first time post-divorce.
How do you know if it’s time to get divorced?
Four ways I’ve learned to deepen friendships.
The book that profoundly changed my friend’s sex life.
Reader question: “I want to talk dirty in bed, but I’m nervous.”
Nine habits that are making my 40s my favorite decade.
On fashion and beauty:
How to style a shirt like a Copenhagen girl.
7 things we spotted people wearing in Paris (plus, two magic Paris itineraries).
13 beauty products we always finish.
Do I get botox or filler? Readers asked, and I answered. :)
At age 46, I finally figured out my hair.
Gemma’s #1 drugstore beauty find.
Our 13 favorite swimsuits.
And, most of all, amazing life insights from women we love:
Ashley C. Ford on why poverty makes it hard to figure out what you like.
Anne Helen Petersen’s book-filled island cottage.
Three people share how they changed their careers. Then, three more women share!
Brooke Barker’s great conversation starter.
Hunter Harris tells us what movies and shows to watch right now.
Abbey Nova’s jaw-dropping garden makeover.
Natasha Pickowicz wants you to throw yourself a party.
My sister’s parenting hack that I can’t stop thinking about.
Alison Piepmeyer’s amazing wallpaper before-and-after photos.
15 incredible books to read.
Nine ways Kate Baer is coming out to play in her 40s.

Here’s the discount link for 20% off annual subscriptions, and here’s the Big Salad homepage, if you’d like to check it out. We would love to have you, and thank you so much for your support and readership. Joannaxo
P.S. We also offer 50 comped subscriptions per month for those who’d like to read Big Salad but aren’t in a place to pay for it at the moment. Just email newsletter@cupofjo.com to get on the list. Thank you!

38 commentsHi Joanna, I have loved what I’ve been able to read of Big Salad and now that I’m finally in a place to afford to subscribe, I would love to! That said, I am also choosing not to buy substack subscriptions. I’m so glad to know that you and the team are talking about this, and I really hope to be a subscriber in the future!
Thank you for the discount link!
Will there be more podcasts? They are so fun!
yes!
A warm request to consider a different hosting platform. Your brand has so much power. https://www.theguardian.com/media/2026/feb/07/revealed-how-substack-makes-money-from-hosting-nazi-newsletters
Curious what other platforms are out there that are free from ethical issues (thus far)?
Happy birthday, Big Salad! So grateful to have this newsletter and community in my life :) Just curious, is the sale only for new subscribers or can existing paid subs take advantage as well?
Hi Zoë! Great question! Yes, existing monthly subscribers can receive the discount if they convert to an annual subscription using this link: https://joannagoddard.substack.com/winter2026 Hope this helps! xo
Hi! Does the discount apply to renewals? My subscription expires in August. Or only new subscriptions? Thanks!
Hi Em, it’s possible for existing monthly subscribers to receive a discount when they convert to an annual subscription using this link: https://joannagoddard.substack.com/winter2026 Unfortunately, it’s not possible to renew annual subscriptions until they expire. I’m so sorry! Hope this helps! xKaitlyn
Thanks for the gift link – I so identify with your dating realization! I went on a first date last night and am strategizing how to word my “I’m not interested text” after receiving a very enthusiastic follow-up from my date. (It was decidedly not a good date – lots of nodding along while he over shared about a very recent divorce.) Reflexively I want to cushion my rejection text with something like, “I’m sorry if that is disappointing to hear,” but why??? My 40-something year-old date should be perfectly able to manage his own disappointment after a first date without the support of my slender wrists. I strive to move through the world in the most compassionate way possible BUT also, these slender wrists are tired!
Yes!! Maybe have a go-to message when you’re not feeling it so you don’t have to think about it every time — “thanks so much for hanging out last night; to be honest, I’m not feeling a romantic connection but I wish you the best of luck!” Or whatever Onwards and upwards! And bro get a therapist!
It feels like a fine balance between generosity and kindness (on men who are so used to it they take it for granted {{eye roll}}, and just being cut and dried. When to extend the same courtesy and kindness we would want to men for whom it may go right over their heads, and when not to…I guess it’s a personal decision. Treat others as we would like (love) to be treated… While initially, I loved your, “I’m sorry if that is disappointing to hear”, after a moment of thought, I realized it is actually presumptuous to presume he will be disappointed…in a black and white way of course. Empathy is gift, whether the recipient realizes it or not…
I’m currently an annual subscriber to Big Salad and love it! But I’m also cancelling all my substack subscriptions moving forward due to the platform willfully making money from extremist garbage content – which has been reported on for years, most recently out of the Guardian, “How Substack makes money from hosting N-zi newsletters.” I would love to return to an annual subscription if Big Salad is able to find another platform!
Same here!!! Anne Helen Peterson recently switched and the comments section is admittedly less user friendly but I’m so happy to keep paying for the newsletter and to keep the community going
thank you for your notes! we are talking about this seriously as a team. thank you!!
I am happy to hear you’re talking and thinking about it, I know platform switching has big costs for y’all <3 <3 And hi Carolyn, thrilled to encounter Culture Study friends everywhere we meet!!!
I subscribe to many Substacks, but Big Salad is the one I get most excited to see in my inbox. Thank you for creating a high-quality virtual gathering space!
Thank you for sharing the Big Salad link. What a good idea to have a first date uniform! I have been married for almost 30 years, but I think it is a very transferable idea that I could use for other repeating social events in my life. Thanks for that. Respectfully, I’d like to offer an additional different perspective on point number three:“I’ve often found myself biting my tongue so a guy won’t feel uncomfortable, or soothing someone even when I’m tired or frustrated myself.” I think it takes some selflessness to be in a good relationship. You sometimes do that for them and they sometimes do that for you. I am sure there are times when a good male partner bites their tongue and just listens (when we are frustrated or anxious) even though they are tired and frustrated and maybe feeling short on patience . I hear what you are saying, and I agree to some extent for sure, but I just think it is easy to forget that part of a healthy and successful relationship is knowing that we all use our slender wrists to support each other through tough times.
i very much agree
Oh of course!! Selflessness can be so good at times in a relationship. But I meant when it’s at the expense of yourself over and over. Hope that distinction makes sense. Xoxo
I just subscribed! Now I have a problem because I want to shirk all responsibilities and spend the day reading the archives!!
Congratulations, Joanna! First time reader
Hi, congrats on the anniversary! Just a question, the photo of the kitchen/home library/sitting room featured on top, is that from a Cup of Jo house tour? Cause I think I’ve missed it and it’s gorgeous!
It’s from this big salad issue! https://joannagoddard.substack.com/p/anne-helen-petersen-favorite-things
Congratulations Joanna! I remember when you launched, and all the pushback you got. Impressed that you took this risk and that you are thriving years later. You are one of 3 Substacks I pay to subscribe to, and it’s worth it!
Thank you so much!!!
Yes!! So happy for you, Joanna. Congratulations to you and the team on all your success with this new(er) side of your business!
Same Amrita!
Happy Birthday and congratulations! My husband and I set a personal budget before starting our huge kitchen remodel. It always makes me happy to see Big Salad on my budget each month. Thank you for the great content and connection. Keep up the great work!
I’m so touched, Estee. So glad to have tou xoxoxo
I started dating a while after my divorce bc I had very littles and I had no need. But when I did I had had so much time to value my own needs and reflect on my past relationship errors where I abandoned myself. So when I started I rarely swiped right- I mean if anyone had anything on their profile that didn’t match with something I wanted in my life it was a ‘pass’. I knew if I started chatting with someone that had something they loved and i didn’t lifestyle wise it would be hard to make that work. I saw my friends go on so many bad dates bc they dated men who had chosen the ‘figuring out my dating goals’ – I’m middle aged, if you don’t know what you’re looking for yet, I can tell you that’s not the man I’m looking for. This approach has served me so well, and I’ve had two long term amazing relationships. I also really started to question the narrative that marriage was the goal- and it was for the men I was dating- but I think after all I’ve seen maybe for now it’s better for me to enjoy the ride then to chose an option that has me taking on a lot of the responsibilities that men often defer to women to manage.
BIG congrats to BIG Salad and Team! Many, many more years ahead! (Really enjoyed your dating rules!)
I wish Big Salad the happiest birthday ever, Joanna-! I am very proud of your hard work, diligence, and tenacity all the while looking so very beautiful.
Hi! The gift link doesn’t work. Thanks!
Hi Oli, if you’re reading on your phone, you may need to copy the gift link URL (below) and paste it directly into your phone’s web browser. Clicking on the link may cause the Substack app to open, which gives some readers trouble. Please let us know if that works for you! Thank you so much for reading! xo https://joannagoddard.substack.com/p/61ccae36-cb17-4bfb-8668-dd16c3d51dba?postPreview=paid&updated=2026-02-06T19%3A32%3A16.862Z&audience=only_paid&free_preview=false&freemail=
