What Did You Do This Weekend?

akc meet the breeds 2026 javits center

How was your weekend? We made brownie-cookies and met the cutest dogs…

akc meet the breeds 2026 javits center

On Saturday, the boys and I went to the AKC Meet the Breeds, and Anton was in HEAVEN. The booths showcase 100+ dogs in alphabetical order, from Affenpinschers to Labradors to Yorkies; and we got to watch agility demonstrations with dogs jumping over hurdles and running through tunnels. The whole thing felt so charming and adorable and just a little Best in Show, in a great way. (LOTS of hand-knit dog sweaters.) (We all wanted one.)

smitten kitchen brownie cookies

We came home, and since the weather’s “real feel” was -14°F, we decided to stay inside and cook warm foods. I made chicken tikka masala and Smitten Kitchen’s brownie cookies…

Jeremy Barnyak Joanna Goddard

…and then called my cousin Jeremy to get credit (I’m infamously the worst cook of our generation of cousins — but getting better!).

Finally, we invited a few friends over to watch the Olympics. Have you been watching? The figure skating is always gorgeous, and oh my gosh the freestyle skiing!

olympics meme regular person

This made me laugh so much.

How about you? How was your weekend? I would love to hear.

Through it all, Minnesota, Idaho, and the state of the country is always on our minds. Here are ways to help and how to help fight back against ICE.

P.S. 12 incredible Olympics photos, and only the cutest book I’ve ever read, nbd.

Thanks for continuing to elevate the situation in Minneapolis! If any Cup of Joers are feeling the Valentine’s bug, and want to give some financial love to a family here, I’m raising funds to help out my lovely neighbor who’s husband was deported last week. It’s heartbreaking and awful and I’m hopeful we can help ease some of her burdens right now: https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-erica-and-her-daughters-in-minneapolis

Kaylie

I had a very quick trip to NY this weekend to attend a Heated Rivalry-themed birthday party, which included many costumes, watching Episodes 5 & 6 in a theater, episode bingo, and so much hooting & hollering. Things have been so HARD that a weekend for fun (even with yes the -14, NY somehow being even colder than Chicago on Saturday and the truly curdled snow on some of your sidewalks) and friendship really revitalized me. Now to hold on to that momentum as the doldrums of February come marching back in…

Martha

Is that tall young man by the fireplace Toby???? Woah Nellie…he’s growing like a weed! My husband and I were given use of a friends beach house for the weekend….Saturday it was raining sideways, all the better to read, watch the waves crash, and craft by the fire! We gorged on oysters and probably the freshest dungeness crab Ive ever had! The sun came out on Sunday, so we got in a 2 mile walk on the beach and saw two bald eagles! Then we were invited to a Superbowl party by the beach house neighbors ( who we hadn’t yet met!) and had a lovely time cheering on our Seahawks!

Kay from Queens

I took it easy this weekend. While it’s been bone chillingncold in NYC, I love that it gives me the opportunity to just not do anything and really lean into the hibernation vibes. Saturday, I went to the library for an hour of quiet time. Just browsed to my heart’s delight. I’m in the middle of Disappearing Earth by Julia Phillips and really enjoying it. That night, I tried watching a movie (Glass Onion Knives Out) but fell asleep 30 minutes into it because I was so tired from the week. Sunday, I got into an argument with my SIL because I can’t take her lying anymore and just said fuck it, don’t talk to me any.ore because all you do is lie and pretend you’re the victim. Bye. Made pollo guisado for dinner and got ready for the Bad Bunny concert/Superbowl. Hilarious content from my 5 year old daughter as watched the Halftime show: At 7:15- Husband to kids: start cleaning up your toys, it’s almost time for bed. You can watch Bad Bunny and then go to sleep. 8:00- Surayah- Can we have snacks for our movie? Husband- What movie?? You guys are going to bed in a few minutes! My 5 year old daughter- You said we could watch a movie about a rabbit that doesn’t listen! My 6 year old son- Bad Bunny is not an actual rabbit! My daughter (as we watch the Halftime Show)-They’re gathering the corn that the bunny might eat. (She still thinks Bad Bunny is a bad rabbit.) Daughter-The rabbit knows Elsa??? (Referring to Lady Gaga) Halftime is over- Daughter- When is he going to be bad?? Me: dying laughing

Anni

“they’re gathering the corn that the bunny might eat” is the best halftime show commentary I didn’t know I needed !!!

Liz

“The rabbit knows Elsa?” is 10000% percent a comment that my toddler would have made had she been watching :’D

Amber

My 3 year old was so pissed “mommy that’s not a bunny, he’s supposed to have fur!” (she and the 6 year old both loved the performance in the end, despite the lack of rabbits)

Alex

Bad Bunny’s halftime show was so excellent, so perfect, so undeniably brilliant in EVERY way. I’ve watched in 10 more times since Sunday. He has recharged my hope and joy meters to overflowing. I now have an emotional support halftime show. Puerto Ricooooooo!!!!

Lala

SAME!!!!!! My boys have watched it after school everyday and I’m soooooo happy they love it too!!!! Adelante!!!!

Jeana

My long-distance best friend and I went to Hot Springs, Arkansas to enjoy the thermal baths. We travel together every few years and the parts I treasure the most are the drives – up and down mountains, to and from airports, between points of interest. That’s when we get to really talk, instead of just catching up. We’ve been there for each other through all sorts of life/identity transitions this way, despite not living in the same city for almost a decade.

Gisela

To be honest me and most of my friends and family and corworkers didn’t even know the olympics were starting. We were soooooooo excited and focused on preparing and being excited for Bad Bunny’s half time show! As someone from Puerto Rico living in the states it meant so much to so many, especially with everything happening regarding ICE and immigration and as someone that also works within the immigration community, Bad Bunny’s performance was such a moment of unity and joy! A bright light in the darkness. His message of love being stronger than hate hit so close to home, and watching him showcase my Puerto Rican culture on full display with no apology and acknowledging all the other countries in the americas, was truly breathtaking. Plus seeing the bits of stateside puerto rican culture (like the song Nuevayol!) was amazing.

Marian Schembari

Gisela, yes!!!! I SOBBED when I saw the piraguas stand at the beginning of the show, and then again at the pavas on so many of the dancers, which my own abuelo wore. I live on the West Coast where there are very few Puerto Ricans — I can’t remember the last time I ate a tostone — and this felt like such a joy and a celebration and connection to my family. Bad Bunny is such a gift.

Sasha in Montana

My weekend: My birthday was Thursday, had a really wonderful day with friends and family stopping by. I enjoyed the unreasonable warmth. The warmest bday in my 53 years (all in Montana). Went out to dinner with family in Friday. So lovely. Brownie and ice cream with toasted marshmallow for dessert. It felt strange being in a crowded loud joyful restaurant, I haven’t been out in a very long time. Friday was my husband’s last wound care appointment for his burns. HALLELUJAH. I’m so grateful to be closing that chapter. Saturday and Sunday we got some lovely long sunshine walks with puppy Mo and Nora. Mo is obsessed with his ball and it’s a delight watching him prance around with it in his mouth, so very proud of himself. Watching Waiting for Guffman. Shed some tears for the brilliant light that is Catherine OHara. Had the most amazing meal delivered by a very kind friend, manicotti and green salad and APPLE CRISP and ice cream. Heaven. On paper plates. Started Monday with my baby grandson, who is officially a HUGGER. It’s the best. I love reading about everyone’s lives through these little updates. I hope the week ahead is good for everyone. Started Monday

Anon

So pleased to hear about your husband’s progress, Sasha. Sounds like a weekend with some much needed joy.

Katie

Sasha I’ve been wondering how you’re doing! I’m glad you had a lovely birthday and wound care is done!!

Julie

Kelsey McKinney is such a great writer. Friday I made salmon and asparagus and watched The Pitt and Shrinking with my husband. Saturday was my best friend’s birthday dinner-a group of us went to a great Lebanese restaurant and then had beers at a German place. Came home to our thermostat having conked out, so it was 45 degrees in my house. Getting changed into my jammies was a CHALLENGE. Sunday I went to brunch with a girlfriend, split beignets and had a fabulous cocktail with caramelized pineapple, and then came home to watch the (boring) Super Bowl and (amazing) halftime show.

Char

It was a good weekend. Saturday was just the usual routine: chores, kid activities, playground meetup with some other families, and dinner at my in-laws place. On Sunday, my daughter (10) had an extra long training session for artistic swim at the pool. I took my knitting along, as I do every week. And just like every week, I barely knit a stitch because whenever her team is working on their routine, I am absolutely transfixed and cannot tear my eyes away. It’s even better than the Olympics.

Sarah

The corgi photo at the top! Did y’all notice the fingernail with a dog painted on it?

Jacky

After a 5 year hiatus, spent 2 frigid days skiing in Vermont! No Lyndsey Vonn moments, thankfully, just achy knees. And dang – the old rag wool sweater kept me toasty warm unlike my kids fancy synthetic gear.

gilina

Speaking of dogs, have you seen the “dog chooses you” video’s where rescue dogs now choose their new owner from a room full of blindfolded people? It is AMAZING. The dogs will actually jump into their chosen persons lap and hug them with their heads. SOB…This is the very best way to be adopted by a dog…. I love dogs and cats but cannot have one yet. Going to a dog show as a non-owner sounds like a fun idea!

Hannah

Hi, Gillina, Sorry to be the Debby Downer, but I recently learned that most, if not all, of these videos are AI-generated. It makes sense if you think about it – I don’t think a reputable shelter would conduct an adoption event like this, with the potential to overwhelm skittish dogs. It’s also totally understandable that you would believe them to be genuine. These videos tug on our heart strings and do feel good to look at! In an effort to better understand AI content, I’ve been spending some time on the “is it AI” Reddit page, and I’ve learned a lot about how to spot AI in the wild, particularly in videos. It’s eye-opening and also heartbreaking, to be honest. I feel so concerned about where this content is taking us, and as a teacher with two kids of my own, I’m struggling to make sense of how to navigate this weird new internet landscape.

Bonnie

Thank you, Hannah, for your kind reply on this. I am always explaining to friends who love these that there aren’t 50+ people all at one time waiting to adopt dogs from one place. It’s a slog to get many rescues adopted and while these videos are adorable and fun and heartwarming… They are without a doubt among the many fake videos out there.

Denise

We did chores, watched the Olympics, and then the Super Bowl. The bestest, best was watching my almost four year old grandson dance to Bad Bunny! Honorable mention goes to the Grass People!

Amy

I did an hour of protesting against ICE on a bridge. It’s a standing Sunday afternoon event so I’m hoping to make it part of my weekly routine. And all of the Olympics. I cannot wait for the curling match in a few hours. In other MN news – the UCLA women’s gymnastics team had a dual meet with the Univ of MN and Jordan Chiles did her Prince routine in honor of MN and it was magic.

Sara

I didn’t watch the UCLA meet yet I’m now so excited to!!

Lala

Amy, THANK YOU for protesting!!!!!!

Emily

I don’t know if this counts, but I’ve normalized tampons for my 4.5yo son! I had a few on the table to take to work and he asked “Why are there tampons out?” and when I explained that my period started his reaction was “oh, ok.” Just accepting that it’s a normal part of life. Felt like a parenting win.

Jess

Just had a similar conversation with my 3.5yo son about some pads I had out in the bathroom (I’m 38w pregnant and have been a victim of the Cold That Will Not End, which is making me pee when I cough or sneeze). Go us for normalizing! Conversation- “Mama, what are these?” “Oh, that’s a pad! Want to see one?” “YES! What do they do?” “They absorb liquid, kind of like a pull up, but are used for people who are having their period or have small accidents sometimes” “Oh cool!” (proceeds to explore clean pad) “It’s squishy!”

.S.

Love these!! We’ve had a similar parenting win over here, when our 3yo son recently explained to his 1.5yo sister that Mama had her period, so there would be blood on the toilet paper, but she was okay and wearing her special undies (period underwear). Gives me hope for this generation of sweet boys.

Whitney

I had my ideal combination! Spent Saturday afternoon at our charming downtown Pratt Street in Hartford doing a flower arranging class, having lunch and a cocktail, and shopping with a friend. Then Sunday spent an afternoon helping my friend Ruth Fortune with her Congressional campaign. She in the full package (fierce fighter attorney, loving mom and community member, and came to the US as an undocumented 12 year old). She’s going up against a 26 year incumbent and bringing together all of our neighbors and friends skill sets to support her has been bolstering in these very dark times! Please check her out if you, too, are looking for a spark of hope in these dark times. Ooh and an idea for a series? Badass moms who are showing up in these dark times to fight the administration? I have so many examples I’d love to share!

celeste

Yesss! Here’s a Glamour piece I loved. https://www.glamour.com/story/the-women-holding-minneapolis-together

gilina

love this idea – would love to be blown away by the amazing women of our nation!!!

Emma

Just texted my family about Ruth Fortune. They are all in Larson’s district in CT (CD-1).

Julie

Would love a series like that about badass women-there are lots of us without kids who out there fighting.

seb

Would be really cool to hear about women and other folks running in local and regional elections or or even organizing with established groups. Organizing is self-care these days!

SCinNYC

AHHH so exciting to see this! Ruth Fortune is an old friend of mine and she is so dedicated, so smart, so compassionate and exactly the kind of representative we need in Congress. Connecticut folks, you are so lucky to get to vote for her. Check out her platform on public education and immigrant rights.

Whitney

Yes, women doing excellent work as a whole! And to make it easy for all of you to check out our amazing friend who is up against a very hard fight to even get in on the primary ballot http://www.ruthfortuneforcongress.com and https://www.instagram.com/ruthfortuneforcongress?igsh=bmQzbTR1cWk4N3dy

I used to do lots of volunteer work – for political campaigns and work with survivors of abuse and neglect. I am now 100% burned out on volunteer work that requires intense personal interactions. So I started giving either whole blood or platelets once a month and that’s been GREAT. But this weekend I learned I may not be able to give platelets anymore due to a bad physical reaction. Does anyone else have volunteer work/service they do that might slot in? I would really appreciate any suggestions!

Shel

Volunteering with animals may be a nice option!

Mary Mary

My husband does a weekly food pickup at a grocery store and delivers it to an organization that provides food to those in need. He is only involved with this single step in the process.

Emily

Perhaps your local senior center? They are often looking for dishwashers during senior lunches or drivers for Meals on Wheels. Some interaction, but less intense. Or your local schools could be looking for people to help restock the library shelves. Or animal rescues! Walking dogs, playing with cats.

beth b

I work at a blood bank and they need volunteers to help in the canteen area. Do you like cats or dogs? There is always a need for volunteers at the local animal shelter. How about the library or nursing homes? I think there are lots of opportunities … you just need to find a good match! Thank you for all you’ve done.

Reba

I also used to do some pretty intense volunteer work (GED prep, foster kids, etc.), on top of a “helping profession” type of job. Got to be a lot, so I know where you’re at. I started volunteering at my local food bank and also sorting books for a local literacy organization that distributes free books. Both are mostly filling boxes and moving stuff, very mindless, limited socializing, but it’s gotta be done. And, when in doubt, pick an org doing good work ad Just Send Money. Thanks for persevering, Anon!

TKB

I recently became an AARP Tax Aide! No, you do not have to be a member of AARP. If you don’t mind doing simple tax returns, you can help people without getting too involved. It’s intense from January thru early April but then it’s over. In summers, I help remove barbed wire from public lands. It’s a great excuse to spend a day outdoors. But that may be specific to Colorado.

Billie

I like to volunteer in introvert-friendly ways. Food banks, shelters, clothing banks for foster kids, and libraries often need sorters or packers. I am excited to be doing my first sorting shift at a local kids book bank this week. In terms of political volunteering, I have had some like writing for postcard campaigns to voters leading up to elections. The local or county parks often need trail maintenance or cleanup volunteers. Intense people to people volunteering is great but it is only one of many ways to help!

Michelle

I don’t have a volunteer rec but wanted to thank you for your past blood donations. Donated blood saved my life once!

gilina

Create a music playlist for a senior center of “actually” great music from their generation or beyond. Not just elevator music or neutral slush. Host weekly movie night’s at a senior center with delicious snacks. Call your city hall or mayor’s office and ask for their most pressing volunteer needs. Reverse the plot and switch to self-care days where you voluntarily gift yourself with some treatment or another…

gilina

@ Reba, I don’t understand why a blood bank would need any volunteers? They get paid hundreds of dollars for the blood the harvest and sell from each person.

kath

I would add that it is very good and valid to take a break from volunteering when you’ve gotten burnt out. But, I will also share that shelving books at my daughter’s school’s library is very satisfying and non-stressful – perhaps a local library or school library could use some help?

Evenings free

But, Anon, thank you for being willing to donate! It gets forgotten I think. My mom was a faithful blood donor for 30 years with the American Red Cross. The only times she couldn’t donate were her quarantine periods after returning from Uganda, where she also did volunteer work. Bless you for all you do, you’ll find something that fits!

Marg

I want to reiterate that it’s ok to take a break—but at the same time, I understand that volunteering can keep you grounded when things feel awful, so I hope you can find something that works for you! My suggestion is to sign up for Postcards to Voters. They coordinate people to hand-write campaign postcards for democrat candidates in key races, often in deep red states or elections with low turnout expectations, and you can do it completely on your own schedule. They just ask that you send out cards within 3 days of signing up for a batch, but you can sign up for any number and at any time. You do have to supply the postcards and stamps yourself, so it’s not 100% free, but if you’re the kind of person who is always tempted to buy stationery (hiii it’s me), maybe that’s a fringe benefit :) https://postcardstovoters.org/

Cara

I love that you are taking care of yourself and still thinking of how you can contribute. As a mom in occupied MN I keep thinking of that newborn/toddler mantra “you can’t pour from an empty cup.” What if your volunteer work is to fill your cup for the next month or two? Early bedtimes, long baths, only seeing people who feel good to you, less doom scrolling, more hobbies, whatever? And then you can come back into serving others in ways that feel good. I used to volunteer at a Meditation center and that was very introvert friendly. Part of how I serve others now is by making meals or snacks to support the helpers in my circles. And I also give rides to immigrants… I enjoy the gentle chatting, but it can be low key and quiet if that’s what you need. Oh! And we are going to provide respite care for service dogs in training when their volunteer humans go on vacation this summer. Many rescue many service dog programs rely heavily on volunteers to keep costs lower for the disabled people they serve.

Anon

I love this community so much, you’ve brought tears to my eyes with your wonderful suggestions and kindnesses! Thank you, each and every one of you!

Agnès

Oh this week end was good! We watched the opening ceremony for the olympics on friday and so decided to take my 12 y old and 2 of his friend ice-skating! It was lovely to see them help each other on the ice… my man and I went dancing saturday night to celebrate a colombian carnival (the latino community is important in Paris), and sunday was busy with homework and more olympics watching… nice to hear from you all! Love from Paris

Sasha in Montana

Colombian carnival in Paris just sounds beyond wonderful!!! Happy carnival Agnès!

Melanie Miksovsky

I spent Saturday driving from Maryland to Aiken, South Carolina with my dog and my horse. We are here for a week (all girls, all brought our horses, 2 of us brought our elderly dogs). We have stayed at the same place for 6 years in a row and it’s truly our home away from home. We are spending today riding with a lady we met when we were here last year. My niece lives here and her boyfriend is from India and he’s cooking us a homemade meal tomorrow night. It’s been a lot of fun so far with more good times to come!

seb

This sounds like a heavenly week!

Alicia

My husband and I took the train into NYC to see Maybe Happy Ending on Broadway (highly recommend!) in the frigid cold (don’t recommend). https://www.maybehappyending.com

Mina

I have completely randomly from out of nowhere become some kind of suburban bird watcher. It has been so cold (and snowy) here in Stockholm, so I put up a little bird feeder in the apple tree in front of our kitchen window. We’ve fed birds before but I was never at all interested in them before now. I’ve been standing by the window every chance I get all weekend and even looked up common winter birds in Sweden to identify which ones we’ve had visiting the feeder. My husband seems as perplexed by this as I am.

Danielle

Recently, I watched my Aunt and Uncle’s house for them. They’re famously, impressively, almost no waste at their house, and we’re always spotting new systems around this and the last few times I’ve been there we’ve been committed to, but unsure of, what The Crumb Bowl was for. Any spare crumbs no longer good enough for the compost bucket, or the chicken scraps, it’s a league of its own. Turns out it’s for “The Log” which is basically a baking pan of leftover crumbs, bird seed, fats, honey, etc and he freezes it and cuts it up to put out in the feeders. He said birds like seeds but the real important thing in a mix is fat because it’s what will sustain them for the winter and they love it. I clocked 8 different species while we were there, and they were so plump and happy and healthy looking, I’m making a log of my own for my bird feeder with the camera on it (which I am obsessed with) to try to get more variety in my backyard now.

Aline

Love this! :D

Anon

Sorry, but this comment is sounding rather racist. I am wondering why it has been posted?

Sophia

My weekend was spent with everyone at home together after giving birth to my son the week before. Our son had to spend a few days in the NICU. While I was grateful for him to receive great care, it was sad to be discharged myself and go home without him. All throughout my and his hospital stay, our friends dog sat. It was so special to have us all at home together, especially since we went through many years of IVF and had experienced recurrent miscarriages to get to where we are today. Despite not getting a ton of sleep, I’m loving the newborn snuggles and spending time with my son. We’re in love!

Hannah Cummings

Mazel tov on the birth of your son! My son spent a few days in the NICU in May 2024…I remember that feeling of FINALLY going home with him so well. He’s now a healthy, rambunctious 20 month-old. Enjoy those newborn snuggles and the cozy winter days — so happy you are home together. Best of luck to you and your family!

Sasha in Montana

Congrats Sophia! Enjoy your newborn snuggles. I hope you are getting some rest.

Stella

Such a glimmer reading about your cozy weekend and seeing Anton’s smile! I spent some time over the weekend looking for books for my daughter, she’s in tenth grade and reads a lot. She likes Colleen Hoover and drama/romance, not dystopian science fiction. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Alicia

I love the Elizabeth Berg trilogy Durable Goods, Joy School and True to Form. Sweet, but not too syrupy, coming of age novels about a teen girl.

Katie

The Education of Kia Greer by Alanna Bennett! It’s SO good, YA but I recommend it for all ages. Kia is the youngest daughter in a Kardashian inspired family, except all the daughters are kind to each other and doing their best under their intense momager. Kia just wants to be a normal kid but then falls in love and adventures ensue. It’s beautifully written, fun, sweet coming of age, and I wish I’d read more characters with self respect and broad interests at that age! The audiobook is also excellent.

Emily

I loved the Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging series when I was that age.

Stella

Thank you Alicia! I just put in an order at my local library :)

Erin

Tenth grade is the perfect time to start reading Jane Austen!

Stella

And Katie, Emily, and Erin — thank you so much. With Valentine’s Day and winter break just around the corner I’ll put together a book bundle for her! Thank you!

Steffi

I loved anything by Sarah Dessen when I was that age. And I want to echo the Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging recommendation! I have no idea if it holds up (it’s been at least 15 years since I read this series), but god did it make me laugh out loud from beginning to end!

Ceridwen

My husband said the other day “let’s watch lots of the Cold Olympics” and I don’t know why but it cracked me up so much. It will be forever The Cold Olympics in our house.

Hope

Ha! That’s perfect. After the Super Bowl halftime show my husband said he was Sad Bunny because it was alllll so beautiful!

Kelsey

I am really, really enjoying this new series of sharing our weekends. It’s the sweetest to hear how each of you is faring, as we make our way through this messy, vibrant, upsetting, surprising world. We hosted friends at our house on Saturday, wearing our sweaters and sitting in the backyard because there was a patch of sun and warmth before this week’s rain and cold. The kids played for HOURS, independently and with kindness. Proud parents! Sunday morning I went to take the dog for a quiet walk but my kids and spouse trailed after me… We meandered to a fancy coffee shop and back. Then we showed up at a bouldering gym for a kids’ birthday party and closed out the event. The four of us were still bouldering two hours after the party ended. Turns out climbing with elementary-aged kids is a wonderfully low-dopamine activity while also intensely rewarding?! It wasn’t until bedtime that we realized we straight missed the Super Bowl.

Court

I opened up the ol’ calender and spreadsheet and started booking summer camps for my kids. I should be a pro by now (kids will be 9 and 12) but every summer brings new challenges. And the prices this year!!! (Dead emoji!.) Any other parents wishing for year round school??

julie

Wishing for year round school? LITERALLY ALWAYS. Solidarity, Court!

Vittoria

Omg same!! The agony of booking camps….!!

Chris

Love these weekend after posts! I got so much joy from Bad Bunny’s halftime show…amazing!

Hil

Such a cold weekend in NYC – warming Indian food and cookies were a great call! Saturday I celebrated a friends Birthday and Sunday was a day just for me with an extra long work out, meditation, some cleaning, some writing and some lounging.

Luciana Clark

My dear friend got engaged this weekend and her fiancé not only organized a surprise party to celebrate it with friends and family but he SECRETLY flew in her parents from another continent! Her eyes lit up when she saw them and of course everyone around was bawling. So much love in one room!! 100% worth it braving the arctic temperatures to be there :)

Tara

Is your friend Louise from the “8 Looks” post last week????

Luciana Clark

Hi, Tara! No, but I’m checking that post right away!!

Kris

Friday night was a park picnic with my 4 year old. Saturday we went to the library then the botanical garden. Sunday was a a trip to the playground that ended up being 3 hours. Early bedtime for both of us Sunday eve.

PNW GRATEFUL

Perfect. I remember days like that. Treasures, all. :)

Clarissa Moreira

With regards to regular people trying Olympic sports – I thought exactly the same thing, did some googling and found a “Come and Try Curling” day which I’ve booked for March ! I’ll let you know how hard that sweeping really is. I’m in Melbourne, Australia so was honestly amazed that we have somewhere to try curling here.

Caryn

You’ll have so much fun! A few years ago we did that for my annual “activity birthday”* and we all had a blast! *Highly recommend. My family looks forward to it every year, and we’ve learned how to do some cool things! My son said next year is the ropes course. Ummm….

Jess

It’s so much fun! I hope you love it! I did it for a season when I lived in a colder state in the US and it was the best time. Curlers are (generally) quite lovely and welcoming and happy to help newcomers learn the sport. Good Curling!

seb

Caryn I want to hear more about “activity birthday”?! Is there also cake birthday or sleep birthday days, hahaha

Abby

I had a busy weekend of parenting – Friday night swimming lessons and then dinner with our beloved babysitter as the guest of honour, a million and one errands on Saturday, and then a frantic round of house-cleaning and party prep in honour of my kiddo’s birthday. She had 6 friends over (all dropped off and then collected 90 min later, a first!) and had a great time doing crafts and eating cake. I felt a great sense of mum-accomplishment…and also very, very tired. Ha!

Kamina

Thank you for the brownie cookie recipe! Recently I’ve been suggesting to my 2.5 year old that we bake brownies and he keeps insisting on cookies instead. (Even though I’m 100% sure he likes brownies; I’ve seen him eat them and go back for more.) Actual conversation yesterday: Me: Hey baby, shall we bake brownies today? 2: No Mummy, I DON’T LOVE THOSE! Me: I think you do? They’re like chocolate cake. 2: (under breath) They’re like poo-poos. Maybe the Smitten Kitchen recipe will be a “gateway brownie” I can get him on board with.

Deb

Oh to be a toddler and not have to stop yourself saying that something is like poo-poos.

Deb

Although I’m sure your brownies really are great and not at all like poo-poos.

C L

I like to imagine that Deb commenting above is in fact Smitten Kitchen Deb, talking about her own brownies and poo-poos :)

Deb

Hahaha. Oh that would have been excellent, wouldn’t it?! Sorry, different Deb here *waves awkwardly*.

Jen

Ha! Love and a needed laugh! Thank you!

Bobo

All the screen time: Listers, a fabulous and hilarious documentary about birding Olympics Super Bowl half time show with friends going on 15 years. Not a football person. Eating out today much Moved my body and didn’t get enough alone time or chores done

Emm

I would love to volunteer as tribute to be the normal person to go first at the Olympics, except not for something scary…I would volunteer for ice skating, and especially if I got to wear a glittery skating dress. I am a non-graceful, stocky late 30s lady and I think I would really help the athletes shine lololol

Nori

Emma, I would vote for you! I’d volunteer for the SkiMo, which sounds very fun and I’m very intrigued to try. But I can’t ski and I’d might need to mountaineer back down or take a sled. But that would be against the rules..haha

Mel

Hehehe your generosity of spirit, Emm! 😄 Also, I’d be in the same boaf!

Lily

Thank you for supporting Meet the Breeds!! A lot of care and love goes into that event and into every single dog at Westminster! My border collie’s sister represented the breed last year! As a kid, going through the benching areas at the Great American Dog Show in Chicago and meeting all the dogs was the highlight of my year 😁

Kelly H

The quote about letting a regular non-athlete compete makes me legit lol. Fun story, at the Paris 2024 Olympics, I was a winner of a contest that allowed people to run the Olympic marathon course after the men’s event, but before the women’s event. THE SAME COURSE. The race started at 9pm, and I’ve truly never smiled so hard and so long in my entire life. My finish time was nowhere near the Olympians, but it was incredibly fun to be able to run the exact route they did, within the same 24 hours of them running. It was a truly magical Parisian bonding experience with 20,000 other smiley amateurs from all over the world. I even shared a taxi with a gentleman from Columbia on the way there! It was the first time the Olympics has ever done this. It was called “Marathon Pour Tous” if you want to look it up! (Or ask me, I would talk about this for hours!)

Emm

Cool!!!

Katie

That is so cool! I had a friend doing the official timing & results for marathon, and I loved all the photos he sent me. I really enjoyed watching both races – so scenic.

Nori

Oh my god, how great is that!! I’m super happy for you that you were able to experience that! Would have loved to run as well. @Joanna Goddard, we need an interview series on the back story of people’s fiction facts or happy memories.

Nori

*fun facts

.S.

Not as epic as running the Olympic marathon but still a fun regular person story – before the 2010 Vancouver Olympics started my uncle (an optician) won a contest and got to carry the Olympic torch when it was coming through Winnipeg on its journey across Canada!

Kath

In response to the hilarious request that a regular human participate in an Olympic event for perspective—we will always have RAYGUN (Too soon?!)

Grace

Raygun – forever an icon!

J.C.

Haha – yes!

Kristin

In the Midwest we have a wonderful progressive store called Raygun, so I was super confused for a minute! https://www.raygunsite.com

Celebrated my son’s engagement to the most beautiful girl. The party was awesome and proud mum moment when many of her relatives came up to me to say I’ve done a great job raising him as he’s a beautiful young man.

Lily

My heart!!!

Megan S.

Can we talk about giant teenaged Toby for a minute? What a grown-up young person he seems to be. My son is 11, and I’ve been watching your boys go through late tweenhood and into adolescence with a lump in my throat, knowing big changes are coming. My weekend depended a lot on the kid’s needs, as they so often do (tae kwon do, school projects, chores, many snacks), but I also got to go and have some solo time at a cafe reading nothing in particular and people-watching. Did not watch the game as I am not a football fan but caught up on the halftime show later and loved it. “The only thing stronger than hate is love,” indeed.

Catherine

Saturday afternoon my daughter took me out for an early birthday and shopping day in our neighborhood. As we were strolling down the street, I saw Allison and her family (including Jo’s adorable honorary niece) and I got so excited!!! I felt both like “I know her! We are already friends!” and “OMG Famous Person!!”. Thank God it was like negative 200 degrees or I might have stopped and embarassed myself (and definitely my daughter).

KM

My 12 year old son’s reaction to the suggestion that normal humans do the Olympic events before the real athletes: Omg that’s genius. No really that’s actually genius. That’s such a good idea. It would be amazing to see the difference between them and a normal person. I asked him if the “normal person” might end up being ridiculed. His response was: No way. I would volunteer to do that in an instant. Made me lol.

Sarah

Weekend too intense with three lots of hosting as people just turn up at our door which sounds good in theory. 3rd lot was really fun but I drank slightly too much and played petanque and darts badly. Did heaps of cooking for the week, overheated, got cross, had a nap. Got fed up with kids and husband, fretted again about the week and then just took to my bed by 7.30 pm Sunday. This is the truth. Not pretty, but the truth.

Agnès

That made me laugh so much Sarah, you’re a star. Love from Paris

Anon

Three lots of hosting mostly unexpected guests sounds awful, honestly. Maybe not awful if you are on holidays for an extended period. But as a person who has to do laundry etc and be at work Monday morning, I need recoup time! No wonder you felt cranky. We all need reset time.

Laura F

Regarding later in life cooking – You and Amy Poehler are pushing me to take small steps to get more comfortable in the kitchen. She has talked a few times about not cooking until her 40’s! Have you noticed?

Marie

For people who don’t love cooking but love homemade food — if you have the budget, I highly recommend a Thermomix. I know I sound like I’m in a cult but it’s been the best thing to happen to my kitchen! My kids enjoy helping as well and it’s given me a ton of confidence

Chloe

Anyone else taking care of a spouse who is going through cancer treatment? Early 40’s, young kids, isolation big time even though we have amazing friends and family. Weekends are definitely not what they used to be…sending strength to all those in similar situations.

lmw

Reaching out for support with all these challenges while still seeing the positive at the same time shows such a good heart with so much strength in such a hard time!

AMK

Sending so much love your way, Chloe! Taking out my teaspoon to carve out and carry some of the weight of it all. 🥄

Jackie O

Sending you huge love and hope Chloe and family. xoxox

Pemberton

Oh, Chloe, my heart aches for you. I have been there and know how tough it is. My husband received a cancer diagnosis in his early forties followed by multiple surgeries and chemotherapy. Despite leaning on my wonderful people and asking for help in ways I wouldn’t normally be comfortable doing, it was still so isolating. I know. I see you and am sending so much love and positive energy your way. And if what you need right now is decidedly NOT positive energy but rather commiseration and acknowledgment of the extreme suckiness and space to be angry and feel all the feelings and say all the cuss words then I share in that with you too. Give yourself permission to not always be strong, and do whatever you need to do to get through. It is awful for your spouse but it is also awful for you. In my little family we are now in our late forties and thankfully past that incredibly hard time. You will get through this. I am hoping so hard for the best possible outcome.❤️

Kelsey

Feeling for you, Chloe. Thanks for sharing with us, so we can see you out there shouldering all this. I hope there’s good news soon.

Emily

Sending love and a link, Chloe. This is a support organization for parents battling cancer while raising young children. Hopefully something there for you and your family: https://www.brightspotnetwork.org/

Sarah

COJ team – I would love to see a post on what it’s like to be a caregiver, especially one that is managing young kids as well. would be a super interesting interview, could interview a few people on what their days are like, what helps them cope, etc. Sending strength to you, Chloe, and anyone else in this awful situation.

Lori

We accidentally hosted two events this weekend- our “every few months” dinner party with dear friends in which we rotate houses every few months and cook a great meal and just catch up and have a great time. Booked the date before I remembered it was Superbowl weekend where we always host the in-laws and our dear Canadian friends. So we cooked up another storm on Sunday! It was exhausting but both so fun and at least the house only had to be cleaned once for both events!

Isabelle

It is weirdly comforting to hear about everyone’s weekend! My kids and I made some Valentines on Saturday morning while watching the Olympics, then I met up with my BWC (book and wine club) at our local pub for our annual Aquarius birthday drinks/live music (we are 3 of us with bdays a few days apart), followed by a yummy thai dinner. Sunday was skiing with the kids. For the Superbowl, my 9 year old had his buddy over to watch and it was very sweet to watch these boys cheer for opposing teams in a very respectful manner.

Kelsey

What a lovely sounding weekend. And I couldn’t agree more about how comforting it feels to read what we’ve all been doing.

Larissa C

My parents visited and we took my two daughters to see Circle Round – an awesome podcast for kids – recorded live at Boston Symphony Hall! It felt so special to be in a beautiful space with tons of kids transfixed by engaging story telling and lovely music.

Al

Yay for Circle Round!! By far the best of all the children’s podcasts we’ve tried. I’m blown away by the quality over and over again! I don’t hear it talked about enough, so it made my day to see it here!

Sarah

Love Circle Round! A fav podcats for my 6 year old. Any other kids podcast recs from this lovely community?

Allegra

We love Circle Round – how fun to see it live! Sarah, I can’t see how to reply directly to your question, but our other favorite children’s podcast is But Why, which is a podcast from Vermont Public Media in which kids call in with questions and the hosts talk to experts to answer them. Similar to Circle Round, it’s not overproduced, and is still engaging and fascinating. One of our favorite episodes was about horseshoe crabs, and included a sea shanty about them.

Emma

If you love circle round, you might also like Super Great Kids – storytellers from around the world telling folktales.

AMK

OMG that’s amazing! Our kids have been listening to Circle Round for years and is still part of our nighttime routine even though our daughter is almost 14 🥹

Megan

My older kid and I both love Brains On. Its a science podcast but very silly and funny

Lena

@Sarah Levy Terrestrials, aka Radiolab for Kids! A very little bit grating at times but also so well done and so many stories about the land and animals!

Jen

Greeking Out is a fantastic podcasts for kids and parents alike!

Ruthie

We love Circle Round! They are so talented. And the kids’ call-ins at the end? “I love you Rebecca Scheeeeeer!” We also like Story Pirates, a bit more pop and humor than Circle Round, but my girls (8 and almost 6) love it.

Ashley

Ran here to say Terrestrials too- by the Radio Lab producers and is loved by my nature-loving Terrestrials. We also love Wow in the World (though it is a more frenetic pace and can overwhelm me if my kids are talking over it when we play in the car- but hilarious and great science learning!)

Mouse

Yay for Symphony Hall! Used to sing there; great space. :)

Laurel

Another cheer for Circle Round! Rebecca Sheir is a celebrity in our house. We saw Circle Round live last fall and it was incredible. Highly recommend for kids of any age – I think our son started listening when he was 3? Our kids love podcasts in general, so a few other recommendations are Girl Tales, Smash Boom Best, Greeking Out, Forever Ago, Trivia for Kids, and Bluey Storytime. A few PBS shows also have a podcast, like Arthur and Work It Out Wombats.

Circle Round

Sending big gratitude to everyone for the Circle Round cheer! Producing our WBUR folktales podcast is a true labor of love and we’re grateful for your kind support — especially during these challenging times for public media. Thanks for Circling Round with us!

Kari

Seeing my 4.5 yr old get excited for the Olympics has been such a delight. We are not a family that watches a lot of sports at home but we have all been happy to watch all the random Olympics events. My son has been so excited about figure skating, luge, hockey (yay Canadian women’s team!), speed skating, downhill skiing, curling… It’s so fun for us all to suddenly be so invested and get to expose him to so many different activities and talk about how much hard work and dedication the athletes need in order to make it this far. It really warms my heart.

Heidi

The corgi smiling is ridiculously cute.

Amber J

I’ve been waiting for an Olympics mention!! Half of our house was sick, and I’m in the throes of most-day-morning sickness, so we spent 97% of our Saturday and Sunday on the couch watching the Olympics, eating crackers, and sipping Gatorade. It was a rough weekend, but there is no better time to be sick than Olympic season!

Shauna

Ate homemade ice cream and popcorn and watched Blue Lights. Caught up with one of my oldest friends who’s navigating a family crisis and tried to spend most of the time just listening and telling her I love her. Woke up at 5:30am on Sunday to watch the women’s downhill and felt my heart break for Lindsey Vonn. Had a check in with my partner and felt proud of how I articulated a dynamic that isn’t working for me in our relationship. Got worked up reading the most recent Big Salad dispatch last night realizing this dynamic is goddamn everywhere – i.e. women managing men’s emotions and our “slender wrists holding up a falling roof,” to quote Joanna quoting Cinderella’s stepmother (and Rachel Hochhauser). Last night, ate NYT’s harissa wings (so good!!) while I watched and was moved by the halftime show. Tried to fix an expensive candle with tin foil and called it a week.

Lucy

Isn’t Blue Lights amazing! My husband and I binge watched it recently after a friend recommended it and now we’re eagerly awaiting Series 4 which I think comes out this Autumn.

Jenny/AdventuresAlongTheWay

Thanks for sharing this. I’ve felt like I have been doing this (managing men’s emotions) extensively these last weeks, and it’s been so emotionally exhausting. And really sad.

Shauna

Lucy, omg yes – it’s the best. We’re on Season 2. That’s great news about Season 4. I had no idea that the balm I needed was a show about rookie cops in Belfast, but it totally is! I am so invested in every character. Jenny, woof. I am with you. Sending you strength and hope you find time to do something that makes you come alive this week (I will try to also!)

Cynthia

The corgi pictures are adorable!

Lia

Saturday am got off to a poopy start (literally – one of the kids carelessly tracked poo all over the bathroom and then everyone was understandably mad), but Saturday afternoon we hosted a rock climbing party for one of the kids, then I had dinner with a friend. It was a rough day for one of our kids who is on the spectrum so I was exhausted from dealing with their intense emotional swings (after belaying kids for 2 hours and dealing with party set up/breakdown ). Talking to another adult while enjoying a crisp white and some Olympics in the background helped me re-center. On Sunday we taxied kids to a birthday party, Girl Scout cookie business, a youth hockey game, and a Cub scout meeting where a bunch of third grade boys were learning knife skills (STRESSFUL). Then I turned veggie tray leftovers from the party into dinner while we enjoyed the half time show (what an amazing, joyful event!) and shoved everyone into their beds early. I completed my goal to work out in our janky little garage gym (a dusty rower and some weights) which has really been bringing me a lot of joy lately, then my husband and I watched our favorite YouTube channel, a couple who lives off grid on a remote island (a girl can dream).

Yulia

Ooo–what is the YT channel?

Lia

Yulia, it is Skote Outdoors.

Shar

Please share the YouTube name!!

Erin

This year we’ve made an effort to go on Sunday adventures with my dad. On Saturday when I told my dad that my husband and I were feeling like we needed a rest day, he said “I wish I were at a point where I could take [my 4 year old] on my own.” I said… “are you not?” He said, “am I?” The next day two of my favorite guys — my dad and my son — headed out on an all-day adventure to a cowboy museum and who knows what else. My husband, daughter (10 months) and I stayed home and watched the Olympics (mostly figure skating) except for an hour outing to the park where we laid on a blanket in the shade while our daughter crawled all over us. Such joy in knowing my son was galavanting with my dad the way I used to as a kid, and double joy in some quality time with our daughter!

M.E.

The sweetest!

Kim

I had my first panic attack in some years thanks to that monster in the news. I am a SA survivor. Please call your reps and ask them to demand accountability, if you had the energy to do so. Take care everybody!

S.D.

I’m so sorry, Kim. <3

MaBi

Me too 💔 sending hugs.

Sara

I call daily. Kim, my next call will be in your honor. Protecting your peace.

Kim

Love this community, thank you!!

Laura

I’m not into sports at all, so I spent most of the weekend seeing movies! I’m in Los Angeles where there are endless opportunities to see amazing things on the big screen, so my weekend looked like: -Friday night: saw a talk between film composer Marc Shaiman and Bette Midler before a screening of First Wives Club at the Academy Museum (the whole night was a dream) -Saturday morning: got a large latte and saw Heaven Can Wait at the Vista in Hollywood -Sunday afternoon: skipped the Super Bowl to see Lawrence of Arabia at the Egyptian, one of the most beautiful theatres in the world

Anna

Heaven Can Wait is one of my top 5 faves. Loved it as a kid in the theatre and is still holds up.

Tonya

I’m in MN and had such a nice weekend for the first time in ages amongst all the despairing. Friday: My husband of 26yrs always likes to go to the same three restaurants while I always want to try something new. I basically insisted we go to this amazing Laotian place and we had so much fun eating at the bar and trying everything on the menu. Afterwards he said, “What a great night! We should try harder to go to new places.” I was like, “What? Who even are you?” Keeping me on my toes! Saturday: We went to a dinner party with our great friend’s and then walked through the Luminary Lopet (stunningly beautiful candlelit walk across a frozen lake. Most MN thing ever). Sunday: I went to my social-justice church where I always cry to be with so many people who work to do the right thing and care about their neighbors. It’s a spiritual home and call to action every week. And then to a SB party to eat nachos and watch my crush Benito killing it at halftime. Top notch.

Lia

I just love this! This sounds like an amazing weekend and you sound like a fantastic human! Sending you strength and love from across the country.

Nicola

A mixed bag, went for two swims in one day with my kids, the first morning there was a lifeguard scheduling issue so ate cheesecake for breakfast while we waited for the pool to open, worried and worried about my in-laws finances/retirement/potential dementia and its impact on my husband, mucked up roast potatoes in a moment of devastating stupidity.

Anon

Bit of a rollercoaster of a weekend (pun intended). I am waiting for an evaluation for a possible bipolar diagnosis. I’m a “high-functioning” 41 year old and wondering if this is the answer I’ve been desperately searching for for most of my life. I had a 2 week hypomanic episode triggered by caffeine last month, followed by a 2 week low period. I emailed my doctor about it and she managed to get me in that same day and took it so seriously. I always joked that I had postpartum euphoria and it turns out that’s a real thing. I’m both incredibly grateful to be getting some care now and for my INCREDIBLE support system (my husband and my besties) and also a bit heartbroken that our medical system in the US let me slip through the cracks for so long, especially after having a baby.

Caro

Rooting for you, Anon. Kudos to your doctor for getting you in same day and for taking it seriously. I so hope the evaluation offers some clarity and peace.

Rachel

Sending you love, Anon! I got diagnosed BPD1 at 32, post-partum. I’m so glad your doctor is taking you seriously! With the right care team, and likely meds, you’re going to be okay! It took me a bit to get things balanced, but I feel totally normal and like myself now. Always advocate for yourself- it took some time for me to convince my psychiatrist that I was having tough side effects from a med and wanted to try something else, but as soon as I did, everything improved. You’ve got this!

Suzan

Just wanted to say that I admire you for asking for what you need. I am so sorry it took so long for you to get answers and I am glad you have such a great support system. Wishing you the best as you navigate this time. Hugs to you.

Anon

Thank you Caro and Rachel! I have to wait until early March for my first appointment and I’m trying to stay calm.

Jess

I have bipolar II (diagnosed after a long mood journaling period and super fun and lengthy intake process at around 33). It’s a hard thing to figure out, and I’m so glad you finally had a doctor take you seriously. You’re not alone out here, parenting with bipolar and navigating the US medical system. Here’s hoping you can find treatment that works well to keep you stable and comfortable with the things you do!

Mel

We had our first fun weekend in ages. We’re in the Minneapolis area so our weekends have been *heavy* but man Joy! We all need it. Friday night we ordered pizza, and for the grown up pizza we ordered pickle pizza and man it was surprisingly awesome. Saturday we puttered about and played and napped (we should all nap more, what a treat) and I finished ‘State of Wonder’ by Ann Patchett (fun fact, it takes place mostly in the Amazon and partly in Eden Prairie, MN where i live!) so good. Sunday my husband decided to host a SuperBowl party and I said ‘but we hate football’ and he said ‘but wings are on sale’ so we invited the neighborhood and some other friends and ate wings, and held each others kiddos and it was wonderful. Bad Bunny’s performance, the response from the world, the support flooding our state, all of it feels like hope.

Hillary R

Big Bunny and friends, Olympic events, Super Bowl ads, Vance boo’d, and a Special Olympian birthday in hubs family. Puppy bowl! Brunch, dinner nibbles and started a new novel to wind down. Jam packed rollercoaster.

Hillary R

As in big hearted Bad Bunny..oh and Green Day changing the lyrics to fight the foolish, and Kevin James (sitting in the stands) in character from his new film, Solo Mio. Full breath day!

Anon

Went to the seaside. Looked across the Channel to France. It rained. Sat in a steamed up cafe, ate a jacket potato with cheese and beans, drank a mug of tea. Did the crossword and read the owner’s metal detecting magazines. Then had a pint in a pub. Felt very English indeed.

Amber J

This is the dream.

Sarah

I love this . I wonder if you’ll get a cold after the steamed up cafe though.

Allison

Anon, I am so jealous. That sounds like a perfect weekend! Signed, an American who misses the English seaside

Mouse

Are you in an episode of The Detectorists? :)

Amanda

We needed to get out of the house on Saturday, so we went to the Fleur de Flea – a local vintage market here in town. There was an adorable poodle that sat on the counter and greeted us as we walked in, a bar set up for cocktails while you browse, a photo booth for pictures, fantastic music, and someone making popcorn for visitors. There was such great energy in the air while everyone browsed all the treasures! After that, we popped over for lunch at a Japanese restaurant and wrapped up a lovely day at a local record store. The whole day was a welcome distraction from the cold, snow, and dumpster fire news. Our brains needed it.

Kelly H

Wait! are you in Louisville? Or are there multiple cities with a Fleur De Flea near a great Japanese restaurant and record store??

Amanda

Haha, yes! I’m in Louisville!!! Have I finally found a fellow Cup of Jo local????

Kelly H

Ahhh so cool! I was picturing exactly where you were through your description!

Anna

Joanna, I love that you are more into cooking and posting your recipes and outcomes here. Longtime reader and I know this is a new venture for you. Bravo! Spent the weekend resting from first bunion surgery last week. Ask me anything! Finished the audiobook “Heart the Lover” after all of you lot recommended it. Also became a Great Aunt on Sunday. My niece is such a badass woman. #girlpower

Sue

Anna I have been noticing that I catch myself thinking ‘should I be considering surgery for these??’ more and more as I get older… I’m almost 50 and my bunions are getting bigger and achier, and mum’s are absolutely enormous. What was it that made you take the surgery step? Thank you so much for offering to answer questions! xo

Maddy

Hey, bunion surgery twin!! I had mine done coming up two weeks ago. Hope you’re recovering nicely and comfortably!

Anna

@Sue! Hello Bunion Sufferer. Mine have been steadily growing for about 10 years. The last 6 included painful bump when wearing narrow shoes. In the last 2 years it has progressed to ‘deformity’, per my podiatrist; left toe curving very leftward and making my 2nd little piggy hammer up and embrace the big toe. Wearing any shoes, including slippers, was getting painful, let alone anything form fitting like cycling shoes or nice dress shoes. I was on a long weekend in Boston walking the Freedom Trail last November and was in tears at the end of the day. That is when I knew I needed to book surgery. Dr said it was minimally invasive at this stage (ie early and non-arthritic). It’s been a week and I am wearing a surgical shoe, no need for crutches. She inserted 2 screws into big toe and broke/reset second hammered toe. I am 9 days until dressing removal. Six total weeks in walking shoe.

Anna

@Maddy Hello! Hope you are recovering comfortably as well. Are you able to rest at home in peace? I am lucky to work remotely and have husband support. I only used crutches outside for a few jaunts, but must wear walking postop shoe for 6 weeks. Not the worst thing to have, I don’t know how people handle broken legs, ankles, etc. Heavens!

Maddy

Hi Anna! My recovery is going well. I’m at home with my family, and they’ve been a great help; I was using crutches for the first week and a bit, but now can get around without them, but keeping my steps limited. I was worried about the pain factor post-op, but I’m relieved it’s been an easier recovery. I’m also in those supportive sandal-type shoes, which are rather a nuisance. My visit to the fracture clinic is next week, so I’ll see what happens! And congratulations on becoming a Great Auntie!

Anonymous

We are in Seattle and loved watching the Superbowl. Go Hawks! Very excited for Sam Darnold (our QB) to reach such success iafter the career he’s had, and his persistence/resilience was such a great lesson for our kids. Plus our coach is the cutest and so humble. Bad Bunny’s performance was transcendent. What joy we all felt watching the many flags of the Americas fly. And the music was amazing. We loved eating our nachos while enjoying Latin music. It was a lovely weekend!

anon

Go Hawks! I cried during the half time show then cried when the team won. It was a weepy Super Bowl! :)

Lia

I had chills watching the flags snake through the sugar cane and hearing him list off the countries, and my heart nearly burst in the final minute, what a phenomenal performance and message. So many moments to savor…what a gift.
