Is This the Sexiest Move You Can Do?

Maybe this is TMI, but…

Back in college, my boyfriend and I would play a game where we’d sit on the sofa or lie in bed and…just look at each other. We weren’t “allowed” to kiss or touch, we just had to look into each other’s eyes for as long as possible before we couldn’t stand it anymore. When one person finally made a move, the other person was declared the winner.

Have you done this? At first, maybe you laugh and feel dumb. But as time goes on, you get into this dreamlike state where you feel really connected to your partner, and then it starts to feel electrified and every tiny breath or move the other person makes feel so intense, and finally you can’t wait any longer to grab them. I’ve done it since with other partners, and it’s always wildly sexy.

“Forget sex, forget nudity,” writes Sophie Gilbert in her Atlantic article The Death of the Sex Scene. “The history of film and television suggests that, sometimes, the sexiest thing two people can do on-screen is simply look at each other — look, for a prolonged period of time.” She points out that you have to have chemistry with the person — it obviously doesn’t work with just anyone — but it can be very fun if you’re in the mood.

dirty dancing

They did this in Dirty Dancing, too.

This post makes me laugh in part because it’s so simple — it reminds me of when I wrote a post about candles in which I teased myself for being like “guys, have you heard of candles???” but sometimes the simplest things are the most fun. So, I stand by this!

What are you finding sexy these days? What are your random turn ons? What about sexy books? xoxo

P.S. More fun things, plus a fun movie night idea and how to keep the sparks flying. Also, on Big Salad: how to talk dirty, if you want to.

On the flip side, I think it would be funny to have a post about “icks” or “getting the ick.” For those who are unfamiliar, it’s a word/phrase for the dating phenomenon in which one gets an “intense feeling of disgust or revulsion toward a romantic partner, triggered by a minor or trivial action or habit, often causing a visceral gut reaction and loss of attraction.” Sometimes icks can be truly repulsive, but sometimes they come with a hilarious story to back… For example, when in college, a friend of mine went out on a date with a guy. It went fine, but as he leaned in towards her for an embrace, in such a panic that he was going to lay a kiss on her, my shy and awkward friend, bless her, met his open hands going in for a hug with a *double high-five,* leaving them both a bit speechless and stifling embarrassed laughter. She said the look on his face gave “the ick” before the term was even coined. Needless to say, they did not have another date. Haha I still give this friend grief about this date gone sour… she texted me recently to share that she’d gotten a promotion at work (she’s in a male-oriented engineering field), and I just couldn’t help myself, I sent her the little double hands up emoji and said, “Wow, that’s great, double high five!!” I’ll never let her live it down. Haha

Joanna Goddard

oh my gosh that is so funny, Nicole. would love to do a post on this.

Anon

I would welcome this topic, particularly as it relates to political differences between partners. Are political mismatches too serious to constitute an “ick”? I feel like there must be so many couples right now who are navigating this.

Annie

Anon – that is not an ick, that is a clear misalignment of values and morals. I divorced my MAGA husband a year ago, and at first told everyone a very long story about what went wrong, then usually ended with “and there was also the fact that he went MAGA” and every. single. person. says “that alone is grounds for divorce”. I’ve met quite a few other people in the same boat. Using a weird emoji is an ick. Voting against your partner and children’s rights is much, much more than that.

Anon

The ick. Hmmmm…. I can’t help but think it is a rather self-sabotaging instinct that we blame on the other person. The ick can easily be overcome with reason and a bit of time. When you notice the feeling, breath, be rational – put it in context- and if ore it. Just like any other emotion that one recognizes as being unhelpful or not useful. So, if the person you are dating is actually a good catch and you fond you get the ick… just treat it like bad weather. Let it pass. You will experience it less and less frequently. Don’t let the ick stand between you and happiness with a good person.

Anon

*breathe *ignore it (not if ore it) lol *find (not fond)

Chrissy Kidd

“Sometimes icks can be truly repulsive, but sometimes they come with a hilarious story to back…” You mean like the guy who showed up to our first date with a t shirt saying PIMPIN AINT EASY ??? There was no hilarious backstory. Nor a second date.

jdp

rewatching friday night lights right now with my teen son, and there are times when the looks between characters are so smoldering and filled with so much chemistry (hello lyla and tim riggins season one. whoa.) that i wonder if this is appropriate and then i realize it’s just looking! but sometimes that’s the most intense, right?

Kelly

This immediately brings to mind that classic scene between Mary and George in It’s a Wonderful Life when they are together on the phone. So sexy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PHGs8QmTnM

Rose

This is soooo cliche but when my husband is fixing something around the house and his face is scrunching bc he’s concentrating…WHEW! *fans myself off

Mariah.

I’m late to this – but when my husband smiles and the lines around his eyes kick in and then he sees I’m noticing and he responds to me — that’s heaven. mmmm mmmm mmmm

Vicky

Aaaah there’s nothing like movie scene of two people looking at each other across a room full of people. I watched a lovely little french film last night called “Partir un jour” that’s all about old friends meeting up, with all the feelings that that can stir up, and it was super sexy and moving and nostalgic and melancolic, and the best scenes are definitely of them sort of looking at each other with half smiles. If anyone’s in the mood for a good perimenopausal cry (of the nostalgic variety, not the depressing variety), highly recommend it, here’s the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enPMDGORmlM. Would love to hear your thoughts

Maria

My spouse and I are deeply in love (and have been together 20years). We have been exploring consensual non-monogamy for the past 1.5 years and the deep communication and connection it has fostered is so hot. We love sharing crushes together, talking about fantasies, and getting ready for dates together. I love that we can celebrate being individuals within our committed marriage and I can see him through fresh eyes. Our explorations are not without bumps, but we are committed to always turning towards each other and to do the work on exploring our emotions together. It’s brought layers of richness and delight to our lives that I am grateful for. We have a kid and run a business, so ha, scheduling is hard, but we do it together! I also love that beyond everything we do in service to our family and work, we have something special for two of us.

jen more anonymous than usual

Maria, I wrote my comment before I saw yours but I’m on a similar path and it has been similarly positive. Congratulations, and happy exploration….

Anoni

My most intimate moment of connection was with no eye contact at all. I was helping in my college’s dark room. He was the only student that night, our shoulders almost touching at the developer trays. Just his voice and sparks and a dim red glow.

JBM

Related and an OG COJ rec—meet your partner AT the restaurant (as opposed to driving together). My husband and I have adopted this for the past 13 years when we meet at our first date spot every anniversary. Butterflies and sparks! Also candles and new undies!

sarah

Agreed….my husband LOVES this tip too! He gets so excited when we can “arrive separately” as he calls it and will say things like “oooooh we get to arrive separately!”

Betsy

There’s a reservoir near our house, and once while waiting for my husband to get home from work I decided to walk around it. Three quarters of the way around I locked eyes with my husband coming from the opposite direction – he’d had the same idea. It was *that* scene in 2005 Pride and Prejudice where we held eye contact until we met in the middle and kissed, then he smacked my butt cause that’s our love language, and then we scurried home. ;)

C L

Once in college, my dancer friend took me to her “movement”class where we got partnered up (with a stranger) and did some exercises including one where we had to do any kind of movement around each other while keeping eye contact, and another where we had to keep one point of contact with each other while doing any kind of movement. The guy I was partnered with can attest to the intensity of eye contact as he got a noticeable erection during the exercises. I was a bit flustered, but my seasoned dancer friend said “oh it’s just a body.”

Emma

When my partner and I first got together, we decided not to kiss for a while, knowing once we did we’d be a train down a hill, and we needed some time to let our relationship grow…. It didn’t last long though, since our other option was to stare into each others eyes. His eyes are the most beautiful green. It was so intense that one of us would inevitably close them because the tension was too much. Finally I just looked at him one day and said “can I pleassse????” And three hours later we emerged elated.

KDotty

Well I guess all of us single ladies need to be on the lookout for finish carpenters! Yum.

Lucy

OG readers may remember an iconic post about how the secret to having more underwear is to buy more underwear. And guess what- it’s been a game changer for 10 years! No advice is too simple!

Joanna Goddard

YES!!!!!!!! thank you Lucy xoxo

Kim

I have been married for eleven years and I cannot touch my husband most of the time because it’s electric. The only thing I can think of that is “safe” is when we’re out in public and hold hands. I can bear that. But anything more, and we need a bedroom, STAT. We’ve always kind of had this wild passionate thing. I feel very fortunate. And yes, we have kids. And ladies, I don’t know you’re there or have gone through this but OH MY the horniness level when you’re about perimenopause age. Hot damn.

Kimberly

Jealous! My sex drive feels so dead right now, ha ha. Maybe when my baby is older and I’m getting sleep again…hopefully it will come back…

Kim

It definitely will, Kimberly! When my kids were younger, it was completely different. Your hormones swing back around, at least I think they do. Good luck!

C B

Thank you for saying this Kim, because I don’t know wtf is happening with my sex drive, but I am here for it. Perimenopause, is it?! It is *distracting*.

Sarah

45 and this is def not true for me!

Erica

When my husband grabs my face with both his hands for a kiss…omg, SWOON!!

M M

On a very different note, my three-year old daughter does this also and it melts my heart.

MLE

This just made me think of that long Look Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth give each other while she turns pages for his piano-playing sister in the BBC P&P. Gave me goosebumps just typing it! :)

Justine

Yessss MLE such a sexy scene!

M M

hahaha we’ve JUST been watching this (over the course of several nights) and the other night my husband said something like “oh tonight the smoldering piano scene is coming up. That always gets me going.” Hilarious.

Maiz

That’s what I thought of, too! Steamiest stare EVER.

Georgia

Can I just add to this excellent moment brought to you by BBC period dramas the scene from North and South where Mr Thornton whispers look back at me AND the closing scene *swoons*

Emma O

The BBC P&P is the best P&P. Hands down.

JLS

Georgia, I am here for every swoon in that miniseries- Mr Thornton looks like a different man in that last scene because he’s smiling! But his longing looks, his acts of kindness, his words of respect- “fans self”

Sarah

Love this idea, so intimate. My husband isn’t a big fan of physical touch (it’s my love language and he’s very good about indulging me), but he typically doesn’t initiate the hand holding, hugging, etc. But those rare moments when he does?? Such a lovely surprise and puts butterflies in my stomach!

Cheryl

Sylvia Yes, Mickey How do you call your lover boy? Come here, lover boy And if he doesn’t answer? Oh lover boy And if he still doesn’t answer? I simply say…

Sarah D

BAAAABY….oh baaaby…

Rose

The Nick Jonas-Priyanka Chopra interview seat pull, hi-five AND the Davos meeting Justin Trudeau-Katy Perry side-check-smile-wink combo is ridiculously sexy/cute/too much depending on my mood.

Sara

How about that couch scene in episode 6 of Heated Rivalry? Also…can you do a Heated Rivalry post, Joanna? I need a safe/happy space to talk about it. Thinking this is just the spot. :)

Margaret

I’ve been thinking this myself! ‘WHEN is CoJ going to write about Heated Rivalty?!?’ It is so amazing!

Jess

I wholeheartedly second this!!!

renee

100% sitting here waiting and wondering why it’s taking so long to be posted about for reals! My favorite right now is the shower scene

Sara

Yes, please!!

Liz

Yes, please! It’s all I want to talk about. So much LOVE – it’s exactly what the world needs right now!!

D.Morgendorffer

I’m about to share my greatest discovery about men for any single women reading this. Back in the very late 00s, I had this Where The Wild Things Are tshirt. Whenever I wore this tshirt, men would come out from every direction and want to discuss how wonderful the book was, what it meant to them. Even I, the densest woman, could tell that I would have racked up a huge stack of phone numbers if I had given them the greenlight. I was and am married to the person I should be with, but I wouldn’t have minded an extended conversation on the genius of Maurice Sendak with a cute guy for fun in the lonely years before I met my person. I don’t think it’s a coincidence so many guys love Where the Wild Things Are: Maurice Sendak was great at creating a world where, not at the expense of girls, it was fun for boys to express themselves. The body language of all the guys admiring my shirt was the same: warm and happy to know a woman liked a Wild Rumpus (I’m sure all the Sendiacs present get the reference). I feel like social media restricts the greatness of both men and women, disallowing wild tenderness.

Cece

This is so beautiful!

Joanna Goddard

brb ordering a wild things tee

Stacy

Wow! That was beautifully written.

Kim

LOL that’s my husband’s favorite children’s book.

Midge

Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen explain why it’s so good! https://lookingatpicturebooks.substack.com/p/where-the-wild-things-are

Laura

There’s a delightful children’s book store in Minneapolis called Wild Rumpus. They are participating in the National Shutdown tomorrow and sell Wild Rumpus t-shirts in case anyone wants to test this out and support a business with shared values

M M

Amazing. I was somewhere where a girl was wearing a big t-shirt with a picture of Michelle Pfeiffer from Scarface that said “Don’t call me baby” on it and EVERY guy who walked by checked her out.

Steph

This is fascinating to me because (very different context) my two daughters have both hated that book, but my son loves it! I almost didn’t read it to him at all but did on a whim. He loved it instantly.

Emily

my husband was teaching our 3 year old how to wink the other night at dinner and said “see like this” and turned and winked at me across our messy, chaotic dinner table. but, i tell you what, it worked.

JBM

Swoon!

Nikki

Omg. This is exactly it! HOT. Especially when it can break through the chaos

Jess

I’m less for sustained eye contact (always makes me squirmy and giggly), and more for “makes eye contact a single breath longer than a glance from across the room” – like you are just always finding each other no matter what and want to share the moment.

Evenings free

Yes this!

Madie

Makes sense, because I know the opposite to be true: the first thing to “go” when my husband or I are upset is the eye contact. If we’re not looking each other in the eye, we need to air it out! The best thing is when we hear something someone says that triggers an inside joke and we just look at eachother, deeply, and his eye crinkles come out, and I just swoon.

Nikki

Yes this is so true on the eye contact. And you’re reminding me of the gift of eye crinkles as we/they age. Swoon!

May

I don’t remember.

Julie

It’s dumb, but if my husband is driving it turns me on if he puts his hand on my thigh. Just that bit of casual closeness, something he’s done a million times but it always feels like the first.

Joanna Goddard

oooooh love this.

Hillary R

Hubs placing my hair behind my ear or washing my hair still gives me love bumps. But looking into his deep brown eyes is where it all started. Blush.

Joanna Goddard

“washing my hair”!!! I’ve never had anyone wash my hair — other than at the salon. sounds so romantic.

Ellen

Anyone ever had a partner shave your legs? Unforgettable

C L

Haha ok I was reading along thinking “washing hair? Hmm sounds interesting”, then I saw the partner shaving legs comment and now I’m not sure – is that real or a joke? For me the idea of being in my somewhat cramped stand-up shower with my husband bent over trying to shave my legs is hilariously awkward. Let your freak flag fly, Ellen!

SDY

Boyle loves this comment.

Joanna Goddard

hahaha SDY, I had the same thought — any Brooklyn nine-nine fans will get it.

Hillary R

Legs are hair free ( laser) years ago, ha! But hair wash started many years ago after shoulder surgery and I found it incredibly intimate. So why change 😉. Give it a go ladies!

Alexandra Emily

Makes me think of the scene from the movie Out of Africa, where Robert Redford washes Meryl Streeps hair, the way he looks at her…swoon.

Joaquina

I’m thinking about the scene in “Out of Sight” where Jennifer Lopez and George Clooney quickly glance at each other while he’s in the elevator. Their stare, without talking, says so much about their characters’ intense connection. Sexiest movie for me!

Molly

Yessss! That movie!! 🔥😍

Libbynan

I can remember when “staring contests “ were a popular party game. First one to blink lost. I always won because I love making eye contact with people. I always have and always will. You learn so much about a person just from looking them in the eye.

Kimberly

This immediately reminded me of Performance artist Marina Abramović. She created a piece called “The Artist Is Present” in 2010 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. She sat there for HOURS and strangers would come and sit across from her maintaining constant eye contact. It was fascinating!

Joanna Goddard

oh my gosh yes! and then her former love showed up! https://cupofjo.com/2013/04/04/lost-love/

Hillary R

Oh yes, I caught the installation on tv (PBS) back then and was so moved. Powerful.

jen more anonymous than usual

here to rec her conversation with Bella Freud on Fashion Neurosis. JHC.

Valerie

I’ve been cultivating the same kind of smouldering gaze with the girl in the mirror. I sashay and prowl and dance my sexiest in my pink-lit loft bedroom, all while locking eyes with myself in the mirror. It’s been so healing for my relationship with my body, and damn it’s so hot!

Joanna Goddard

omg Valerie I love this.

Kristina

Putting this on my to-do list!

Anon

Try sharing breath while kissing. With your mouths together, breathe the same breath back and forth. You can only do this 3-4 times before the O2 gets low, then you have to break apart and breathe fresh air.

Andy

Ohmygosh this post is so timely. I just dropped off lunch to my husband (who is a finish carpenter) and when he walked out of the home where he is building bookshelves, with his arm hair full of sawdust and his silver hair peeking out from under his hat, I just 100% wanted to jump his bones. And now inspired by this post, I realize the biggest turn-on for me is witnessing him out in the wild. Like, temporarily forgetting you know this person. Watching him laugh with friends across the room at a party, talking measurements and material options on the phone with a client, basically witnessing him as a person living his life, not as my partner these last 25 years and all of the intricacies and complications that work their way in when two people have been together that long. When I look at him from the view as a spectator, all of that falls away and I just see a really hot guy that is living his life and continues to choose me after all these years. That is what makes me want to take his clothes off.

Alex

YES – All of this! And as someone who is also married to a finish carpenter – the tool belt helps does it to me every time.

Rachel

Wow I love this so much!!

KEE

Hard agree! One of my favorite recent memories is my husband and I were in Costco (a known wellspring of romance) and went in different directions. A few minutes later I saw a man and thought oh he’s cute — and then realized it was my husband of almost 20 years. I still pick him out of a crowd! Or at least out of a crowd of people buying commercial-sized jars of mayo!

Alison

Yesss!!! Witnessing my husband in the wild, like, ‘do other people see how hot you are right now?!? I’m so damn lucky’ He surprised my toddler and I at the grocery store recently and my heart skipped three beats unexpectedly seeing him walk towards us. Oof.

Ali

This is so on point! I had to pick my husband up from work one day and watching him walk off his job site in dirty jeans and boots was incredibly HOT!

Erica

100% agree!! Add to that: husband in the wild with your baby. Now that is next-level sexy right there!

Sam

Ahaha, I misread at first and thought Andy was married to a FINNISH carpenter and I thought hmmmm what is up? Do they use different tools? Or wear special clothes? Off to make an appointment with the optometrist!

Hana

That would be Mr. Wonderful ( it’s a movie).

Amanda

Haha I love this post! The candle post is amazing, because it very much has that “florals, for spring? Groundbreaking.” energy to it, but at the same time, it’s actually just such a good reminder that candles really help a table feel special! Sometimes you need to be reminded that florals ARE great for spring! Love the staring. Years ago, we had a team-building seminar at my workplace where we had to make eye contact with a team member for 90 seconds. It was supposed to be a way to connect, and well, it was a bit too successful because there was some real sexual tension between pairs, then someone complained and they had to ban the activity from ever being done again haha however, it’s GREAT with partners!

Joanna Goddard

omg the sexual tension!!! hahaha that is so funny.

Joanna Goddard

also, this reminds me, I’ve hosted staring contests in the past — where the rules are not to smile or laugh — and the funny thing is, they end up feeling VERY flirty because, I realized afterward, the only time you really look directly into someone’s eyes without smiling, laughing, or talking, is when you’re about to kiss. https://cupofjo.com/2021/08/05/have-you-ever-had-a-staring-contest/

Marie

I just clicked thelink that you posted Joanna …and saw David Harbour engaged in a staring contest in your home?? I am here for the tea!!

Joanna Goddard

Hahaha yes he was a friend of a friend! We just knew him as a struggling actor back then :)

Sarah

EXHIBIT A: HEATED RIVALRY

Julie

:fans self: THE YEARNING.

Sarah

SO MUCH YEARNING. What Hudson and Connor can do with their eyes alone…..

Lindsey

THIS!

andreea

Came here to say this. “But it’s soft-core porn! But it’s hockey! But it’s gay! But it’s men!) Nah, y’all, it’s YEARNING. With the eyes.

Christina K.

It’s official, they find me every single place I go. LOL

SDY

Don’t get me wrong, I love the show. But I don’t understand why everyone’s hot take is “yearning”. Pretty sure fucking every chance you get is not yearning!!!

Katie

Staring into someone eyes’ is up there for me with “tell me something about yourself”. Both feel like forced intimacy.

Joanna Goddard

I think it sounds weird until you try it!

Lilian Field

This is a super time honored tactic (see Andreas Capellanus’ 12th century treatise “De Amore”). Wish I had time to say more!

Kim

Ah ! Totally reminds me of this: https://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/11/style/modern-love-to-fall-in-love-with-anyone-do-this.html. Prolonged eye-contact is SO intimate! (P.S. I’m also fresh off a breakup but keeping fingers crossed that 2026 brings this kind of love into my life – and yours too, Joanna!)

Frankie

With you Kim (and Jo)!

Nora

A few years ago my husband and I were meeting for a concert after work. We ended up on the same train car but far away from each other. All we had was eye contact and smiles for a lot the ride. As it got less crowded we walked up to each other for a giant smooch. SWOON. lol obviously I still think about it!

jennifer

eye contact is such a hard thing for me as a neurodivergent person. if I do have eye contact with a partner and it doesn’t hurt or feel aggressive then that signals to me that that person is special in some way. Not sure this is a helpful but just to say that I think neurotypical people feel like eye contact is super sexy but for some of us it’s actually quite painful and overwhelming.

Anon

SAME

CKK

Omg, yes. I actually shuddered thinking about doing this with someone–even someone I love!

Joanna Goddard

thank you for this good point, Jennifer!! I should have included this. thank you.

Briana

Was going to say this! It’s a LOT of work for me to look someone in the eyes. I feel like I’d be too tired to find it sexy 🤣

Billie

THIS. As a neurodivergent person this is my worst nightmare. And I have a lovely partner, but just NO.

Kell

Yes, this! I find prolonged eye contact extremely stressful and not in the least arousing.

Alie

There’s a scene in Marvelous Mrs. Maisel where Midge and Lenny Bruce are in a tropical lounge and they’re just staring at each other, and it is quite possibly the sexiest scene in a television series I have ever scene. The first time I saw it my jaw was on the floor.

juana

so hot!!!!! love that scene. much sexier than the very blue room actual sex scene

Anna

Luke Kirby—swoon!! Loved him in Rectify so much. And crushed so much on him playing Lenny Bruce in Marvelous Mrs Maisel.

Kim

Ditto this!! I love rewatching that scene when I want to feel something

celeste

Well, my first thought is, I don’t have time for this? We hide in the closet from our needy dog and make out :)

Sasha in Montana

1. I don’t really like eye contact. Or overly long hugs. 2. I do like laughter 3. And when my husband fixes things.

S G

Sasha you are my twin!!!

Nicole

lol, yes. Show competency in something. Anything! That’s a turn on haha

riye

Same here!! Small acts like fixing things (without being asked) or showing up with a cold drink when you really need one are lovely. The only time eye contact felt fun and flirty was in a drawing class I took in college when one of my classmates kept giving me glances and shy smiles. A little sorry to this day that I didn’t try to talk to him. :-)

Jeanne

Samesies on these! My husband saw a meme with a woman saying the sexiest thing her partner can do is vacuum. He asked “Is that real thing?” I replied “Totally! Cleaning is HOT.” Dear reader, our over-packed garage is in the middle of getting a very overdue donate, toss and deep clean!

Sasha in Montana

My husband will grab the electric drill and vroom vroommmm it lol. I’ll say “what are you doing honey?” “Oh just looking for something to fix” wink wink. He KNOWS. Nicole, competency in anything!! Yesssss. Lol. I think the thing even sexier than vacuuming is tackling a return or calling the insurance company about a rejected claim. SWOON. Make my life easier and I’m yours.

Cheryl

Anybody listen to Armchair Expert? They call it “chore-play” and it’s an actual thing according to their sex expert. Women get aroused when men alleviate the mental and physical load of chores or even parenting. I mean it makes perfect sense. A strong capable man fixing stuff around the house and taking care of business with the kids? 🔥

Sarah

AH, what amazing inspiration! I’m writing a movie with some very sexy bits and I am for sure going to put this in. Also, I love doing this with my partner. I’m in an open marriage and my boyfriend recently came to a party at my house where we proceeded to make EYES at each other all night and it was the sexiest thing ever.

Anon

Can we please have a post on open marriages here on Cup of Jo (or maybe Big Salad)? I have the same dynamic with the guy I am seeing (next to my lovely and extremely sexy husband). We spend a lot of time in public gazing at each other and it is. SO. HOT.

MBH

As an aside….Joanna, I’d be fascinated to read an article about people in open marriages! I hear they are more and more common, and secretly wonder who I know might quietly be in one. Some stories of everyday people living in them could be super interesting.

Joanna Goddard

Hi MBH! we actually did a post a while back, and the reader response was mixed….lots of big feelings! https://cupofjo.com/2017/05/25/open-marriage/

Kimberly

Not gonna lie, as someone recovering from my husband’s affair I find the mere mention of open marriages triggering (even though I know ethical, consensual non-monogamy is not the same as infidelity, my heart is just really raw right now).

Evenings free

Hey Kimberly, if you see this (or even if you don’t) consider yourself seen and heard. I am so sad that this was done to you and you are very brave and powerful for speaking it and for seeking healing. Open marriages are consensual and never demanded or manipulated-for. Demanding or manipulating for sexual activity is abuse. It took me a long time to understand that. You deserve better and I hope you find it!

Shel

My husband and I had chat gpt make like a month long list of sexy activities just for fun. One of the nights started this way and it was SO surprisingly effective. It was a good month!!! Highly recommend using it this way.

Joanna Goddard

oh my gosh, what a fun idea!!

Alison

I get the idea but also could you have come up with the ideas yourself? Crowd sourced anonymously with pals? Made up silly fantasies you never have said out loud before? I hate the robot overlords being involved in even these fun romantic personal parts of our lives! We are creative people and if we stop thinking for ourselves or who knows what’ll happen next. Sorry to be a buzzkill, but chat gpt bums me outtttt.

Shel

I totally get that Alison but also I’m very busy and so is my husband. I did not really want to pay for those little card prompts so we just told it what to do and it was fantastic. To each his or her own!! 😊

Lori

I remember hearing from a sex therapist about a list that partners can make. It has 4 categories: 1. Things I’ve done and want to do again. 2. Things I’ve never done but would like to try. 3. Things I’ve done and DON’T want to do again. 4. Things I’ve never done and DON’T want to try. Could be fun to work on this together!

Anibelle

Genuine kindness is the sexiest thing I can think of because it is SO RARE and generally only seen in married or otherwise attached men, so, entirely off limits. But I yearn for a kind man of my own… Love your game! One day soon hope to have someone to play it with, lol

Joanna Goddard

yes, kind eyes and kind to children and animals and kind and gentle to his partner xoxo

The first man I ever fell in love with, all started because I saw the way he patted my dog…. I was too young for him and not the slightest thing ever happened, but it was the start. It told me what was attractive.

Joanna Goddard

Kirby, I love that. xo

Yes I fins my husband so attractive when he’s kissing our cat on her little head :)

Evenings free

Ugh I just got up to face the day and I’m pulled back to morning dreamland. I’m in that delicious middle area where neither of us are in a place to move anything forward but we both know that we’re really into each other, so all we do is look at each other and talk quietly when we can. Slow to the point of madness. I can feel his eyes. Soon maybe.

Joanna Goddard

oh my gosh, that is the BEST phase. “slow to the point of madness” gahhhhhhhh

And I’ll add that is FEELS that way, but it feels like madness because slow, careful, intentional effort is the opposite of what I’ve experienced in my previous, long, abusive relationship. I am worthy of a healthy relationship even if it takes a long time, and so is he.

Joanna Goddard

oh my gosh, I love your note. and huge congrats and admiration for changing the kind of pattern you were drawn to. that’s amazing. I have always gravitated toward intense relationships and I’m also trying to take things very slowly these days!

For me, manners/politeness = sexy
