Minneapolis, We Are Here for You

This is a strange time to write a blog. To be a parent of giggly children. To be an person walking home from work, eating dinner, brushing teeth, climbing into bed. I’m sure you feel the same. What is happening in Minneapolis and around the country is so far from normal, so far from reasonable and ethical and humane, that it feels very surreal to go to the grocery store or read a bedtime story at the same time.

“So much grief/anger/dissonance right now,” a friend in Minneapolis texted me last night. He was heading out to help build a huge “ICE OUT” sign on local Lake Nokomis — with 100-foot letters for flights to see from the air. By day, snow letters; by night, candles in white paper bags.

Today, he wrote again. “On the first night, I figured there would be like 10 of us. But at least 100 people showed up, and I’m sure it will keep growing. I had the thought on my drive over that ICE agents might be writing down license plate information, but any fear of this sort isn’t going to stop us from lighting fricking candles.”

“Kids and parents worked side by side, prepping white paper bags with snow on the bottom for weighted ballast,” he wrote. “I lit candles for an hour and felt the opposite of fear.”
This week, songwriter Billy Bragg wrote an incredible song, above, about the heroes of Minneapolis — the lyrics are amazing — and here’s also a video of Minnesota drummers against ICE. Everyone is showing up the way they can.
As we root for those in Minnesota this week, with so much admiration and gratitude, here are ways to help the city (and a food pantry that makes deliveries), as well as how to help those fighting ICE in Maine.
Please also stay tuned for info about a Cup of Jo/Big Salad volunteer project in NYC next weekend (February 6-8). We’re putting it together right now and will be in touch soon with details.
And as we sit at our desks today, or parent our children, or brush our teeth, we’ll be holding each other close in our minds. We always try on Cup of Jo to both talk about the hard, heavy parts of life and provide a soft landing for readers when they need one. We’ll continue to do so, as much as we can, during these difficult times.
Thank you so much for reading, as always. Sending so much love. xoxoxoxo
P.S. How are our readers in Minneapolis doing, and what are some small good things in your life right now?

Publishers Weekly had a couple articles worth mentioning about two bookstores to support by buying books online, , and an author even to raise funds for assistance in Minnesota PW wrote about two bookstores in Minneapolis you can help https://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/industry-news/bookselling/article/99561-minneapolis-booksellers-resisting-ice-go-viral-sales-spike.html?oly_enc_id=4680A0297156G2Y and also authors are organizing for February 28 to do book signings in Minnesota, giving out signed copies for those who donates to either the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota or the Women’s Foundation of Minnesota Immigration Rapid Response Fund.
Unfortunately this event left behind a LOT of trash. There is one woman who has been out there for hours every day chipping out the old candles, matchsticks, plastic, and even battery operated lights so they don’t fall into the lake in the spring.
Thank you for always threading the needle of warmth, clarity and presence. I don’t realize how much I need it, until I’m reading your work.
Dear Americans, please watch this, with love from Canada. We wish you levity for your heavy and broken hearts. May this help, if only for a moment. https://youtu.be/S1yYGb1U31o?si=zvI6WnGprRUP7esS
Beautiful. Thank you, neighbor. <3
Honestly this made me laugh and then cry. As your neighbors, I want Canadians to know that we know we have a problem here, many of us are desperately trying to fix it, and we’re so sorry it’s affecting you guys. The 51st state sh!t, the tariffs, etc—we’re so so sorry and we’re on it.
Thank you so much for this post and for standing up for what is right, always. And am thrilled to learn of the new Billy Bragg song. I’ve loved him for decades. He’s an incredible talent and an even better human being.
Bruce freaking Springsteen, the boss himself, has a song out yesterday in support – listening on repeat this morning and crying as I work. I work for a company based in MPLS and the updates from my colleagues have been heartbreaking and hopeful all at once. All I can do from afar is send funds and make space to lend an ear on zoom calls.
Hey friends, I’m a little late with this. Is anyone aware of a directory of resources for Maine? The ICE surge is newer there, the population is smaller and older than in MN, and I’m struggling to provide resources to my SIL’s staff, who are too afraid to leave their homes.
Yes, I live in Maine and Project Relief Maine is the biggest organization dealing with this crisis here.
Oh, that’s disappointing. I’m sure they’re swamped but they haven’t replied to my repeated inquiries. I guess we’ll keep supporting and protecting on our own.
Thank you for keeping attention on what is happening in Minnesota. Even though we are all so tired here and wish it could just be over, it’s definitely not over—and it helps so much to know that people in other places are aware and helping. Agree with others that we all need to call our congresspeople (5calls.org is great for this). The threat to all of our civil liberties is truly dire. Thank you for continuing to shine a light on this awful situation.
Thank you, COJ team for using this platform to talk about this inhumanity and doing such a brilliant job describing our daily lives now. I so appreciate it.
Exhausted MPLS resident here, who found a bit of relief with this part of your post: a friend in Minneapolis texted me last night. He was heading out to help build a huge “ICE OUT” sign on local Lake Nokomis. Sounds like a cool guy! Your MPLS readers would love a feature on this mystery MPLS man!
Just wanted to plug Britt Hawthorne’s resources on talking to kids about ICE, especially the historical context she lays out (helped me as an adult!) – Find her on instagram! We are on the north end of Seattle and see ICE right here in our community too, separating families and scaring our friends and neighbors, and we are learning from Minneapolis how to organize and care for one another. And calling our govt leaders to demand that they intervene in behalf of MN – I often just feel like the PNW is my home but feeling very much like all of the US is my home right now. I remember going to a grad school class the morning after Trump was elected the first time. My history prof knew what was coming our way better than anyone else I knew, both because of her academic expertise in racism in America and because of her lived experience as a Black woman. She was clear with us that day in saying that she knows that history ebbs and flows, but she also knows how long and deep those ebbs can be. I think we’ll find our way to a better future as a country, but we are in that deep ebb right now and pulling back to see the historical context is both clarifying and also doesn’t make any one loss or any one day of fear for a vulnerable family any less impactful right now. Hope everyone can do what they need to this week in order to sustain their efforts in this deep ebb!
Thank you for the rec for Britt Hawthorne! I was looking for help about how to talk about this with my 6 year. Appreciate it!
Gosh that was beautiful, Joanna. Thank you. May we each all do what we can for each other with the resources we have, and may be each all keep an eye on the light. Yesterday at the doctor’s, feeling damn near broken from it all, I sobbed with my GYN–an immigrant and a kind heart–and before I left the room she reached for a hug. Our connection with community in all its forms requires us to see and remind one another that we are seen, that we are not alone, and that we are holding together by the sheer will of what we know is good and right. Show up, speak up, donate if you’re able, put pressure your reps (5Calls.org), check on your neighbors, and remember that our collective efforts are shifting the course of humanity for the better. Hope in action. Group hug, CoJ community!
Minneapolis, my heart is with you. We see you, and we’re fighting hard for you. Jo, you might not publish this, people may not agree with me, it might ruffle Feathers, it’s ok, but it needs to be said. “What is happening in Minneapolis and around the country is so far from normal, so far from reasonable and ethical and humane, that it feels very surreal to go to the grocery store or read a bedtime story at the same time.” It’s not normal, until it becomes normal. Black people have been dying in this country for years, executed. We watched a genocide being livestreamed for 3 years. We watched people blown up, maimed, killed, orphaned, starved. We casted votes for people who were willing to continue to fund a genocide. We now cry about defending ourselves from ICE, possibly even arming ourselves, but the world castigated Palestinians when they tried to defend their humanity, way before Oct 7. The world labeled them terrorists. America labeled the Black Panthers as terrorists when they took up arms, and the NRA(!) even asked for stricter gun laws and now The White House labeled Alex Pretti as a domestic terrorist. We didn’t push hard enough, we didn’t fight hard enough for Gaza, and they saw that and took notes. And not soon after, they launched an assault on Minnesota, killing nurses just like they did in Gaza, killing people because they had “guns” when all it was was a camera, just like the journalists killed in Gaza. They’re tearing families apart, like they did in Gaza, and we didn’t speak up loud enough. If it matters here (and it does), it should’ve mattered there too. This is all part of an imperial boomerang. I appreciate the people who already connected the dots about what’s happening in Palestine is exactly what’s happening here. I appreciate the people who are starting to understand the global aspect of oppression and how it impacts us all. MLK Jr wasn’t lying when he said “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Malcolm X wasn’t lying when he said “If you’re not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are oppressed and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.” And then America killed them both.
Thank you.
+1 to all of this!
Listen to and share the NonViolent Rage song –inspired by the song American Skill (41 bullets). https://youtu.be/lZ54nRkXjIk. Bruce Springsteen just released a song.
My heart is heavy today. I’ve been managing to keep busy – joined a rapid response team, am organizing in my community – but today I just want to cry. Glad to have this community and sending love to Minnesota.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWKSoxG1K7w This broke my heart, but also give me faith… The America we love still standing
Please go to Timothy Snyder’s substack. He wrote the book On Tyranny. There’s so much there on his substack (for free) including a live from today with Misha Collins and Emily Farallon.
Here’s another great song that my uncle in Minneapolis sent today: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4PUOhAJG5EU
This is amazing!
I love you ❤️
Thank you for creating space for this, it’s been such a wild time. I keep returning to CoJ year after year because you (Jo & team) so deftly balance being real about the hard, heavy parts of life and the softer, sweeter parts.
This 💓
Please know that here in Jacksonville, FL our pet rescue members, a very diverse crew , many of whom have been together for years, are often staying home because of the nasty & often threatening behavior they encounter here. Of course this can’t begin to compare with what ICE is doing in Minneapolis, but it seems to have made what I call “ the hidden haters”feel free to come out of their caves. ICE is Ike the Gestapo & need to be put in their place quickly, before they spread more death & denial of basic rights & make this behavior tolerated or even acceptable. Dr. King said “the only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing.”
It’s a great quote, but please check your citation. “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” is a quote routinely attributed to Edmund Burke, but it should more correctly be credited to philosopher John Stuart Mill, who delivered an 1867 inaugural address at the University of St. Andrews, in which he said “Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing.”
Big warm thank you from all of us at VEAP. We’re seeing the donations come in and feeling the national support, which is so, so meaningful amidst the chaos. You all are helping us meet families right where they’re at– thank you!!
This is amazing, CKK! I made a donation yesterday and have sent your organization’s info on to several friends, too! Thank you for all your do – we are rooting for you! xx, Denver, a very blue city who I hope would rally as courageously as you all have done
We think about you and talk about you and worry about you and when there is a protest, we go, in solidarity, even so far and even if it’s just a symbol. People in Minneapolis are so strong and brave, setting an example. Solidarity from Paris. Thank you for that post.
I suggest to participate in the National Strike this Friday, Jan 30th across the US and spend time in community with others who care about people and our broader wellbeing: https://generalstrikeus.com/?utm_source=ig&utm_medium=social&utm_content=link_in_bio
A thought: what if we met this moment like we met COVID? If we remember, Republicans never felt a sense of urgency about our public health (“it’s a bad flu”). It was not until the economy came to its knees that these same leaders took action. If our neighbors in Minneapolis are sheltering in place and turning to mutual aid for protection, can we do the same? Completely stop engaging in commerce, mostly home and local, and be in community? Remember how much money we all saved during COVID?? If we lived like COVID early days for just two weeks, I wonder if that would get business leaders to push for change…
At the very least most of us could quit Amazon prime today without much consequence to ourselves. I quit my membership when I saw that bootlicker Bezos at inauguration. What are we waiting for? It’s not everything but it’s a step.
What about Zuckerberg? Everyone here is quick to point out Bezos, but but what about stopping Facebook and Instagram?
MN is a special place. Thanks for sending love to our community. And a small reminder- it has been negative temperatures here. Warm and welcoming hearts continue for our neighbors.
A Letter to America from an Emotional Support European in collaboration with “Omas Gegen Rechts” (Grannies Against the Far Right): https://youtu.be/Q-Z6M-LDXWg?si=bJWFB5ifXNR-g3if I am 62 and Nana to a beautiful 3 year old grandson. I’ve been watching and warning about the GOP takeover by the far right for a good chunk of my adult life. For the CoJ readers still supporting this madness, please take the time to consider this urgent message coming from Germany.
I think Trump supporters, who are still fully loyal at this point, are the people who’ve denied the holocaust, or the people who thought it was a good idea to begin with. It’s just not possible to think the nazis were wrong AND think Trump is right. Rationality is gone. I do think it’s so important that the rest of sane America is honest with ourselves about how dire our situation is and not pretend that somehow everything is fine or that someone else is going to save us. We are going to have to do very hard things.
https://youtu.be/61I4hlig78w?si=X1xbg9LjcIRR5Ctb Jesse Wells – Join ICE: another protest song!
He’s amazing. Mask Off is another great one of his.
Grateful to all @ CoJ. Donated. With love from London
Chrissy Hennessy writes a wonderful newsletter for creatives called “So Relatable.” This is from her 2024 wrap up: “The only one who can save us is us. In 2024, I finally gave up on various institutions, from government agencies to corporate organizations to the nuclear family. We don’t need to wait for these entities to love us or accept us, and we absolutely cannot expect them to protect us. Instead, we must find ways to do those things for each other. This was the year I joined new communities, built new families, and leaned in to new traditions. I realized it’s okay to ask for and offer help, to find time for joy and happiness even in the midst of calamity. The world is ending, we’re all going to die one day, and how we take care of each other in the meantime is all that really matters. By saving each other, we can save ourselves.“ https://sorelatable.substack.com/p/5-things-i-learned-in-2024?utm_medium=web&triedRedirect=true
I’m a fan of Chrissy’s, too!
These are crazy times, feels like our “leaders” ok not all but some, the loudest ones totally lost connection to their human side. I see it in my country too. What is happening in Minneapolis is just cruel. Cannot believe that someone can have this much power to do such things….cannot believe that the people around him, his party cannot/won’t stip this? Nobody should have this much power. Hope that finally the good will win …I often think about this: things will go for the worse before it would change for the better. How much longer now??
No one in Congress stops him. Republicans or Democrats. A few progressives rally against him ( Bernie and a few others ) but they have all been complicit. Cowards all.
Thank you for this post and for helping bring attention to what is happening in Minnesota! We must all stand with Minnesota and make sure they know that they are not alone in this fight.
I really think the only way to turn this ship around is through financial consequences. It’s through the markets. The ‘president’ and his henchmen- they don’t care about protests. They dont’ care about volunteer efforts or kind words or free speech or diplomatic phone calls from Tim Walz or resilience. All of these are good things but completely ineffective. They listen to money. That’s all they care about. And as hard and uncomfortable as I think it would be — I think if the entire country slashed their spending, withheld their taxes (collectively risking prosecution from the IRS) and collectively collapsed the economy, the GDP, the billionaires and the chronies would be at each others throats. I am tired of bringing civility to brutality. dictators don’t listen to civility or polite, thoughtful, kind requests. they listen to definitive data about how their methods are failing. And again– apparently murdering private citizens or terrorizing entire states and blackmailing them into getting their voter database — all of this does not constitute failure in their mind – because the only thing that matters to them or constitutes failure is screwing up the economy. And we can bring the economy to a screeching halt. One other thing — once Tr*mp is out of office, there is a very real chance that he will be in prison. The supreme court protects all of this criminal behavior while he is president, but once he is out– there is a very real chance he will go to prison for the numerous felonies he has been convicted of. So the third term he would like is not just because he has dictator tendencies– it’s also a way to shield himself from consequences of the well-documented crimes he has been convicted of. So he is going to continue seeking out these voter databases through thugs until he can stay safe and in power. With the right execution, a unified nation-wide effort, some solid economists, the right food storage, creative frugality and survival tools, we could absolutely fuck the market until there is indisputable evidence that the president is unambiguously damaging to our country, in a way that he can actually understand. It would involve a lot of cover and overt efforts- some underground organization. But I dont’ think talking about it is actually screwing the system the way we need to now.
An impassioned approach. One issue with your plan is that screwing the market screws many democrats’ ability to retire, or pay their life-sustaining bills in retirement. In America, you beat bad policy by voting it out. Voting got us into this mess and voting is, in my mind, the way out.
I’m with you Shannon. We have to get those with power to turn against him. The only way to do that is to hurt profits.
I recognize this is depressing but if the economy is collapsed billionaires will use it as an excuse to purchase even more than they already have now. There’s a lot of republican apocalypse hungry people who have brought us to this point I’m afraid, I have a few in my own family. They’re all about “small government” and yet say nothing as the government they voted for is stepping all over our constitutional rights and killing people on the streets. I don’t know what he solution is so I’m just knuckling down, donating to the Minnesota ACLU and voting like hell in the midterms.
Minneapolis mom here. On behalf of all of us here, who are so tired and yet so resolute, a million thanks for having our backs. These comments give me a little boost to keep going. I send weekly emails to a small group of family and friends about what life feels like “on the ground” here, ending with an ask for donations to support all the families in hiding we are bringing groceries and mortgage/rent support to. My 93-year-old grandfather in a retirement home has started a little resistance group amongst his friends; they send me checks written in shaky handwriting with memo lines like “Make good trouble!” and “I was in the Freedom Rides in the 60s. Don’t give up!”
Omg so amazing to hear about your grandfather and his friends!
Jessica, I teared up reading this! Please thank them all!
Your gramps is a badass ❤️🤍💙
Canadian here, who has been glued to and devastated by the news in America. Also incredibly moved by your bravery, kindness and resourcefulness in the face of horror. I can’t do much from here but I’ve donated and my heart is with you all ❤️
Jo, how do you know exactly what is on our hearts? YES. How can we feel “normal” when life is so upside down? It all feels off and disorienting and yet we have to keep working, parenting, and doing our best to show up for our communities. Thank you for everything you share in this sweet corner of the world. It’s very grounding to touch base here.
Thank you for this and all your support and love. I’m a school psychologist in the twin cities and things are tough, and so,so sad right now, but at the same time the care and support within and coming into our community is beyond amazing
I meant to mention this lovely Hispanic church in a suburb of the Twin Cities (what we call Minneapolis and St Paul) https://iglesiavina.org/ they are serving anyone and everyone (wayyyy beyond their parishioners) with food and rent support. Please consider helping them out. I worked for hours the last two weeks unloading grocery donations and loading cars making deliveries to families, it’s AMAZING to be working in sync with so many strangers who are all working for the good. On Saturday alone home warming up in the bath the church posted that we served 10,744 people IN ONE DAY. Minnesotans are strong and mobilized and so, so angry. Thank you for the support.
That is incredible. Thank you!
This is an incredible organization doing the hard work every day. Please consider donating to them to help purchase groceries, diapers, etc. for families afraid to leave their homes. I did deliveries for them this week and they need all the support they can get.
Thank you for an incensed, angry and hard working Minnesotan working to feed and support these terrorized families ❤️💔❤️ knowing support is coming from across the world is bolstering.
Knitting and sending these resistance hats to our Minnesota friends. Thinking and talking about you constantly and marveling at your courage and compassion. Bravo Minnesota! You humble me. https://www.goodgoodgood.co/articles/melt-the-ice-red-hat-knitting-pattern
As a Norwegian, I’m oddly proud of this becoming a part of your resistance. We are rooting for you so much! Go America go!
I’m knitting this hat too!
I bought the pattern but can’t get to my LYS yet (snow…) I’m worried that by the time I get there, there won’t be any more red yarn! So many people are knitting this hat that stores are running out of yarn. Yay, really!
Marianne in Norway, I once played a piano piece, whose name and composer I cannot remember, that I was told was often played on the radio as a subtle symbol of the resistance in WWII. It starts out kind of quiet and then repeats itself over and over, growing in range (and rage!) and volume each repetition. Would you happen to know what that song is called?
Abesha1, Are you possibly thinking about Ravel’s piano version of Le tombeau de Couperin? That’s associated with wartime resistance and definitely repetitive/grows in rage. Each movement was dedicated to a friend who died in WWI.
Thank you for using your platform for posts like these and always doing so with so much thoughtfulness and care. Looking forward to hearing more about the NYC volunteering opportunity. Extra hugs to our friends in Minnesota and Maine tonight. <3
Thinking of all of you in Minnesota <3. I am going to knit and wear this red hat as a visual protest. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/melt-the-ice-hat Melt the ICE Hat – "In the 1940’s, Norwegians made and wore red pointed hats with a tassel as a form of visual protest against Nazi occupation of their country. Within two years, the Nazis made these protest hats illegal and punishable by law to wear, make, or distribute. As purveyors of traditional craft, we felt it appropriate to revisit this design. All proceeds from the sale of this pattern go to local immigrant aid organizations who will distribute the funds to those impacted by the actions of ICE.
Joanna, thank you for this post. I have been going to the local protests/ meetings / events, and NOT ENOUGH people are showing up for this life/ death cause. It’s life as usual for many if not most. Please URGE your readers to boycott Amazon, Target and all the companies that are aiding/ supporting ICE. A mom AND a nurse were murdered- what else needs to happen to mobilize us?
Thank you thank you thank you. This means so much.
Thank you for all the resources and local voices.
From a Canadian reader – absolutely heartbroken for your cities, your communities, your families and your country. It is terrifying and sickening to watch from afar but I can only imagine what it must be like from the inside. Sending love, courage and heartfelt admiration.
There was a protest in *favour* of immigration policing like ICE in Toronto a few weeks ago by verrrrry similar factions. There are very active calls for what’s happening in the States to happen here coming from the “Canada First” white power nonsense. Without standing and voting against them we may soon be amidst it ourselves.
What Lilly says! Let us not cast stones… As a Canadian who recently landed back in Ontario after decades in the UK, both of these countries are far closer to an American state of affairs than they wish to admit. We are lucky that we still have time to PAY ATTENTION and possibly avert these kind of crises.
Thanks for this Post Jo, I love the snow sign, brave and amazing! My artist/teacher/activist friend Aleo Landeta created an illustrated Immigrants’ Rights guide for kids. It’s free to download and is currently available in English and Spanish at their collective’s website. Please share with anyone you might know who could utilize it: teachers, librarians, schools, neighbors, friends, family, etc. Not unhelpful for adults too, tbh. https://www.capercollective.com/know-your-rights-booklet I’m sharing it with the school by my house, my neighbors, my friends, etc. And if you know of anyone who could translate it into other languages, please let them know by contacting them on their homepage!
Thank you for not shying away from addressing these terrible times, for providing a place that’s also a soft landing, and for organizing a volunteer effort! ❤️
I am calling my Congresspeople daily and telling them they need to impeach Kristi Noem, vote no on any spending bill that includes funding for DHS, and push for (at minimum) reasonable legislation like no deportation of citizens, no arrests without judicial warrants, and ideally removing all funding for ICE.
For those who don’t feel inclined to go to protests in their cities (for any reason, including past trauma), I encourage you to look into local vigils and interfaith services. They’re intended to bear public witness and show solidarity, and they often occur on a more regular, weekly or monthly, basis so you can put it on your calendar and show up.
Want to re-elevate some art that I just brought to hang in my front window. I’m sure I heard about it here first: https://justseeds.org/product/abcdefundice/
For Austinites: Candlelight Vigil for Alex Pretti (Wed. 1/28. @ 6:30pm) Alex Pretti was an ICU nurse at a Minneapolis hospital for veterans, a union member, and a concerned community member who was killed by a federal agent this weekend. National Nurses United is hosting a vigil for Alex on Wednesday, January 28, between 6:30pm and 8:30pm, “In remembrance of his life and in support of all those in our communities whose lives have been impacted by ICE and the ongoing cruelty of our immigration system.” The vigil will be at the Ascension Seton Medical Center Austin off 38th St. and Medical Parkway. Map and more info here (https://austintexas.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=51fd74872ddb16c5f022118b3&id=94fadb0b4e&e=f648a645c7).
The people need to shut this down. Stop spending money wherever possible. Strategic economic pressure is one of the few boundaries this administration understands.
Agree. They’re only interested in money.
Thank you, Sarah. Agree.
How about calling your elected officials to request they withhold funding ICE? Shut the damn government down over it. Otherwise, so much personal spending is mandatory: buying food for your family, winter clothes so they’re warm, paying your utility bills and rent.
Helana you make a good point. I said strategic because so much of our spending is not necessary. At any rate, Canadians have had tremendous luck putting economic pressure on tarrifs coming into our control by choosing to avoid American products and travel to the US. It is working and your government is responding in kind. Even a 5 to 10% drop in spending is bringing on change. Small things like buying things second hand or avoiding big box stores can have a massive impact.
Minnesota, we see your bravery down here in the Southwest and we’re learning from your strategies. We know what’s likely coming to us as the weather warms (thus making protesting harder). Sending so much admiration and love (and mutual aid $).
So loved those drummers. What a brilliant idea. Amazing feat in that weather in particular. Thank you to everyone who is protesting and supporting the need for truth and justice, no matter how you do it. I highly recommend calling your state and federal representatives of either party and demanding justice and a real investigation of ICE behavior. We may take awhile to eliminate them. In the meantime, they should be held accountable for their actions, including murder!
Thanks for this post. I’m in the Twin Cities and one thing I’ve been really proud to join (in addition to donating and volunteering) is the Singing Resistance—a growing group dedicated to singing to protect our neighbors and ourselves—grounded in love, nonviolence, and solidarity—singing in the streets, during a local Target sit-in protest, and other locations to come. I’m not on social media, but I think the instagram handle is @singingresistancetc
This is wonderful
Thank you Jo. I live in the Twin Cities and my daughter is 3. A few weeks ago, ICE raided and abducted workers from the restaurant across the street from their preschool while the kids were out on the playground. Our heroic teachers hustled them inside, not knowing if there would be gunshots and not wanting our precious children to witness the violence these agents are inflicting upon our neighbors. Our school community is supporting families in hiding and organizing patrols around the school building in case ICE agents come to try and kidnap families during drop-off. I am so full of rage against these goons that Trump, Miller, and Noem have sent to harm us but also so full of love for everyone in Minnesota who are so brave. And if you’re watching this from another state and aren’t sure if you can be as brave, let me tell you – when the time comes, you can. Join us. I have to believe that some bright day, when this is all over, this will be a period of our history that our children will ask us about and want to know where we stood. I want to be able to answer that I stood up for freedom with courage and empathy.
Thank you, Jo, and CoJ – sending the love right on back!! This lifted my spirits, xoxo
This part: “To be a parent of giggly children. To be an American walking home from work, eating dinner, brushing teeth, climbing into bed. . . ” made me think (for the millionth time since I became “woke”) about the experience of Black Americans, immigrants, minorities, and other oppressed groups since forever. They’ve held this dissonance and fear/outright terror for themselves and their families for so long. I feel sick at how long it has taken me to “take up arms,” as it were. So grateful for everything that’s being done and excited to hear about doing more.
I am from Minneapolis and if anyone is looking to donate, below are some great links community organizers have put together. Specifically as we are approaching the end of the month, please consider donating to rent relief as many families were not able to attend work or businesses were closed <3 https://linktr.ee/mplsmutualaid?utm_source=linktree_profile_share<sid=29ab77be-2628-43ab-9c10-f136c5b58861 https://www.standwithminnesota.com/
My husband and I have protested a number of times in SF these past 12 months, but it doesn’t feel even close to enough. I’m so thankful for this post, this community, and all the ideas on ways to help. This is awful, and I’m so thankful for the voices willing to stand up and say it!
Thank you Jo, and readers. Your companionship and support and righteous anger means the world to our weary community. I told my sister this morning that I can feel the collective soul of our city is so heavy, so weary. We still have hope and strength but it’s so hard, and so heavy. My double heartache, besides feeling the betrayal and brutality of my country is the people who are staying silent, or worse, cheering for this – including my MAGA parents and Aunt and one of my sisters. It is a heartache I have not, in 40 years, ever met before. Please keep sending strength and love to our state. The people here are so beautiful, and so inspiring and they are fighting so hard.
Wow, Mel, I could have written this myself. My life is so similar right now even down to our shared age. I see you, and I am sending you all my love!
Another 40 year old Minneapolis woman here resonating so deeply with your experience – the collectively weary soul is so, so real. I’m with you both, Mel and Katie O. Love and strength from my corner of the city to yours.
This. So weary, and the outpouring of solidarity means the world. Thank you Jo for continuing to see us in Minnesota.
Thank you for this. Such profound feelings of dissonance navigating every day life right now. I’ve been thinking so often of people in other places in the world right now- living in war zones, living in similar or worse conditions of political unrest. And of people in the past living amidst unspeakable horrors and still having to go about their everyday lives. How unbelievably lucky to have rarely felt like this before now, in my privileged life as a middle class white women. It can feel so hard to hold the realities happening in our country, while also being utterly preoccupied with spending the last two days shoveling so much snow!
Wouldn’t it be great if our athletes took action? What if the two teams at the Super Bowl refused to play? What if the world boycotted the World Cup? Etc etc. What if we all cancelled Amazon Prime? I know that might sound silly but money runs our world.
Agreed!!! This would be so fantastic!!!!
Apparently Germany is talking about boycotting the World Cup! Fifa is so corrupt I can’t imagine it happening, but if a bunch of countries did, it would be so cool.
You are so right!! Money is the bottom line, sickening but true.
I paused my prime membership today. Have intentionally not bought anything on Amazon for a while now. I wrote to FIFA to move their US matches to Canada, Mexico but FIFA being equally corrupt, dont think anything will happen. It would be amazing if FIFA or Olympics location is changed
Reading you from France with so much anger and grief that doesn’t know where to go. I hope , HOPE Trump voters finally see what this man is really made of. This has to stop.
Sadly, they are so deep into their cult worship that most will never see the truth.
We are heartbroken and horrified for you all here in Canada, and also conscious that US state violence could soon be our reality too, especially if midterm elections are abolished. Standing strong beside you. I hope she won’t mind me reposting this, but a reader named Bryn left this in the comments yesterday, and I was so moved by it: “A weekend of deep sorrow and not-insignificant hope. That’s what this weekend in MN brought for our family. We ache for Alex Pretti, his family, the injustice of another life taken by our own federal government. And yet, our city, our beautiful state, will not cease to pour out its love for our neighbors. Walking into our local Target on Sunday morning with temps well-below zero and everyone bundled that you can nearly only see their eyes – my three young daughters and I filled our cart with groceries for the Latino Church that meets in our building later that afternoon. As my daughters and I fill our cart, I glance at the two women nearest me in the produce section and see them also filling their carts with staples – potatoes, carrots, onions, breads, rice, oils, meat – a quiet, solitary stand in the produce section of Target on a Sunday morning. Hope. Later that day, I drive past the local Latino Market that has been taking orders from families afraid to leave their homes and to my joy I see every parking spot filled with neighbors filling their vehicles, preparing to deliver boxes full of food into our community. Hope. And at last, I walk into Aldi, prepared to shop for our family and feel brought to tears witnessing the shelves emptied – no beef, no chicken, no oils – so much emptied by the army of neighbors coming to meet the needs of our present moment that the employees are hurriedly trying to restock the shelves to no avail. Hope. Holding HOPE in MN.”
Target is part of the problem…
I say this with love Elle- please don’t heckle the helpers. We need everyone showing up in whatever way they can and it is unhelpful to tell the helpers they are not doing a good enough job. S., thank you for your service to our neighbors 💕 I am right here with you 💕 you are doing a great job.
Elle – yes, but to many it is the only option for assistance like this. The help Bryn is providing greatly outweighs where she bought supplies from, in my opinion. I hope you can see that.
One major issue here is that anonymity is being used as a weapon. Why is it that the identity of these masked ICE agents can be legally concealed? That is not true for firefighters, or police, or any other protective agency, correct? Why not?– Our taxes are paying their salaries. We have a right to know which of these delightful human beings has a criminal record, history of domestic violence, illegal arms possession, drug use, etc. I read that a brave Irishman is actually trying to compile a list of names. It is insane that the identities can be concealed of people paid by our government to walk our streets and shoot, basically, at will.
HEAR, HEAR!
Agreed. It should be illegal. Even the Nazis didn’t wear masks to hide. They need to be defunded ASAP. Meanwhile men have been dressing up as ICE and because they never identify themselves, these fakes are stalking and taking women and raping them. It is insane that this has not been stopped. Maybe now that a white man and woman have been killed a lot of folks who could care less about immigrants (even fellow citizens) and folks of color, will wake up and act like decent human beings and call for an end to this madness and injustice.
Genuinely curious how this is allowed?!
As a Minnesotan, thank you from the bottom of my heart!
1. Thank you Jo and team for always being on the right side. And for taking care of us. 2. Hugs to everyone who needs one today, especially friends in Minnesota, Maine, Chicago, DC and other places under attack. 3. Where are all the trumpers? For years now, whenever Jo has spoken up against this evil regime they have waltzed in like they aren’t supporting a felonous pedophile fascist to defend policies and cry about why can’t Jo give them tips about lip balm without ruining their day with morals and ethics and the constitution. Esp about gun violence and school shootings, so much to say always and now crickets….I want to know where the hell they all are today? 4. If anyone is brave enough, I want to hear from anyone who’s changed their mind. I used to be anti vax, I know what it means to get sucked into cult like thinking and how shameful it feels to come to your senses. But you know what? The time is now. The evil is only growing larger and your shame is only deepening. Personally, as angry as I am, I will welcome you back to sanity.
We’re here! Our comments just aren’t being approved. I spent ten minutes typing one up yesterday and it didn’t pass muster.
Lara, we push through almost all comments — not sure about yesterday because there are four of us moderating but most comments make it through.
I’m wondering about #3 as well. In Philly, I don’t usually hear pro Trump voices. I do read a lot of voices online trying to attack and divide Dems or convince people not to vote Dem. Depressing. However, more to your point, there was a woman a while back who was complaining about the lack of conservative voices on CoJ who kept claiming she worked with immigrants. I didn’t understand her point then, still don’t, but I wonder if she’s since opened her mind.
I’ve been wondering the same, Sasha. p.s. So glad to hear you changed your mind on being anti-vax. Takes a lot to admit that.
I absolutely want to hear Lara’s justification for this horror show!
There’s nothing I can write that would change your worldview, so I don’t share here. I know there used to be more moderate and conservative voices in the comments. I’m sure many still read this blog, just real quietly. I don’t even support Trump but I think the gap between our world views is just too big for the comments section to be the vehicle for discussion.
Sim, thank you. It’s hard to realize you are wrong, about anything really, but something as consequential as vaccines, oof. It was heartbreaking to know I’d put my children, and other people’s children, in potential danger, even though my intentions were only ever to protect them. I speak up because I want to normalize admitting when we are wrong. To normalize reexamining our beliefs when we learn new information. And to not be afraid to evolve. And so that more people can understand that we can all be victims of disinformation, cult indoctrination, false beliefs, no matter our intelligence or background or education.
Lara, based on the comments I’ve always seen here, I find it difficult to believe that Jo is just now suppressing viewpoints? That just doesn’t make any sense. Based on what I’m seeing almost everywhere on social media, I think folks are just out of excuses. The only far right loyalists comments I’m seeing are either clearly bots or so incredibly hateful that the commenters are clearly deranged and attention seeking.
Yea agreed, let Lara speak! She seems so eager to chime in in favor of this horror. Would love to hear what she has to say for herself.
LOVE this! I’ve been asking myself the same thing. And it’s really huge of you to call out your shift in beliefs, I appreciate that and I appreciate you.
LOL. So someone asks “where are the supporters of the felonous pedophile fascist, and Lara pops in to be like “we’re here!!” Lara. girl. look inward. You’ve lost the plot.
And, Lara et al, just know that none of us are afraid to hear your views. I just thought that maybe for once you and those like you were being sensitive to the fact that we are grieving, coming here for support and comfort, and you were holding back out of kindness and sympathy. Obviously that was wrong. Whatever. I know Joanna is brave enough to hear all sides, just like the rest of us are.
I looked back and Lara’s original comment was essentially about how the Minneapolis coverage might be some kind of media conspiracy or inaccurate news that’s exaggerated. that’s why I didn’t push it through bc omfg.
Ok, wow, I honestly did not expect that take. Where on earth is Lara getting her news then?! Even The Wall Street Journal, leftist rag that it is, has had some good coverage. With pictures! She might start there? Or is all media part of this global conspiracy? My guess is that she only follows her curated social media and Fox News because.. wow..
Dianna, lol. You nailed it. Joanna, yeah, I don’t think you’re required to give space to lunatic conspiracy theories. Interesting that THAT’S the response tho. Literally nothing but DON’T BELIEVE YOUR EYES. Because at this point, in order to keep following you have to deny reality…… and be ok with felonious pedophiles.
Omg Diana thank you for the much-needed chuckle.
#4: I’m here. We’re here. I am a Christian, I am a republican, I am a stay at home mom and also live in (small town) Montana. I lead a simple life, and I voted for trump. I ignored the stomach ache. And I am here to say, this is not ok. This is not what I want, what anyone should want. My great grandparents did not immigrate here for this kind of life. I think of learning of the holocaust as a child and wonder how an entire nation let it get to that point. God help us, what are we doing! I cannot change my vote but I can stand up now and say NO. This is not democracy, this is not what America is. Minnesota and elsewhere, my heartfelt prayers are with you all.
Also, I’m sorry. That it’s taken me so long to open my eyes.
