Have a Lovely Weekend.

What are you up to this weekend? I might see Marty Supreme tonight (have you seen it? I truly love ping pong), and the boys and I are going to make brownies. Thank you also for the amazing comments on this book post. Hope you have a good one — stay safe — and here are a few links from around the web…
My niece got me into Block Blast and now I can’t stop.
Steal, the new heist thriller, looks really compelling.
Banana Republic is having a huge winter sale, and I’m eyeing this cozy sweater.
Greek salmon patties? Yummmmm.
Novels everyone will be talking about in 2026, including a sweeping tale of class conflict in Pakistan and a divorced forty-something taking a cruise to see a boy band. (NYT gift link)
I love the idea of nail blush.
Have you ever been a restaurant regular? “Timing was the cheat code. Quiet hours let him introduce himself, learn the owners’ names, be recognized on return visits and, when the weekend crowds hit, land priority seating. ‘I think one of the biggest perks for me is feeling like I built a relationship and I’m part of that community,’ he said. ‘So every time I go I see other regulars, and I see the owners, you hear the latest updates on their stories.’ (NYT gift link)
Gahhh, how iconic is the first lady of NYC?
Sneezes, ranked. The dad sneeze haunts my dreams.
After 20 years of marriage, my friend had a sexual awakening. Here’s the book that profoundly changed her sex life. (Big Salad, paywall)
Most important, if you’re absolutely enraged by an ICE agent murdering a Minnesota mom this week and all the horrors of the Trump administration, take to the streets on January 20th. Abolish ICE.
Plus, three reader comments:
Says K.R. on Kelsey’s dad’s spaghetti: “My dad is forever following my sister, my mom, and me around with fruit. But like, good fruit. Peeled and sectioned clementines, perfectly ripe peaches, melons de-seeded and cubed. I never really noticed he did this — or completely took it for granted — until I came back home as a mom myself and saw, with new eyes, my parents…parenting. Now I am never not seeing the fruit offering.”
Says Kirby on aunt heart: “My aunt was my heart. She wasn’t exactly fun — she was actually very posh and bossy. But I loved her. She helped me select my wedding dress, found my first rental at uni, and took me there to enroll. When my aunt passed her final breath, it was with her hand in mine. Anyone who knows the love of someone like my aunt is a mighty lucky person indeed. If you can be one of those aunties, then you make the world a much better and brighter place.”
Adds Kristen on happy new year: “Ahhh, it feels like all my friends are back from vacation. So good to be back in this space. Happy New Year, everyone!” Adds Hayley: “Cup of Jo never fails to bring a smile to my face. Thank you for creating a warm place out here in the wild, wild west of the internet.”

The bit about becoming a restaurant regular really struck a chord.
The bit about becoming a restaurant regular really struck a chord. I’ve got a local diner where the staff knows my usual order, and that small connection honestly makes my week. It’s not just about skipping the line; it feels like you’ve got a tiny anchor in the neighborhood. More places should foster that kind of vibe.
The dad sneeze! When we visited SUNY Cortland with our daughter, they had us sitting in a big room before the tour. All of a sudden, my husband let out the loudest, strangest sneeze! He said it was trying to hold it in, but it just exploded. The young guys in front of us were cracking up. Somehow, the school still let her in. To this day, we still talk about the ‘Cortland Sneeze’!
Always look forward to this email on Friday afternoons. Wanted to share a nail product I’ve been using that I *think* is like a nail blush. I’ve been looking for a dupe for Dior Nail Glow for years and stumbled upon this Glow Hero product at Walmart, of all places. Costs $3 and frees up cash to donate to causes instead — because there are so many who urgently need our support. I use this product and top it with the Bond Serum for another $3. Chips after a few days but holds up for about a week. And it keeps me from nervously picking at my cuticles 100% of the time right now. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Care-Fix-Glow-Hero/14029411857
I’m sorry to tell you, but Walmart and the Walton family of billionaires are huge supporters of the Republican party and the right! You might want to read more about it before shopping there. Inexpensive nail polish, but at what cost to humanity and the planet?
Julia, just FYI, in some areas of rural America and other places, unfortunately Walmart is the only store around. Also, many people are forced to look for the cheapest price. Not talking about nail polish exactly, but food and other needs. It would be great if we all had the financial means to choose but many people don’t.
Really disliked Marty Supreme. It was hard to watch so many unlikable characters. Left the theatre feeling deflated. Do not understand the hype.
This.
Just the idea of spending (wasting?) 2 hours of my life watching *another* egotistical man manipulate people around him sounds kinda awful to me.
Agree!! And I’m sorry, but I don’t think Timothée deserves an Oscar for learning ping pong (?!)over any of the Sinners crew!
Same. The movie looked good, but it was disappointing. A few nights later, I saw The Secret Agent and it was life affirming and fun!
For what it is worth, I wrote to humanrightscomplaint@fifa.org to note that they consider a change of venue and do not host matches in USA due to the human right violations that is happening with ICE operations. Maybe if enough of us wrote to them, there will be some consideration ( one can hope). This will be a slap in the face for this administration if the matches in US are moved to Canada or Mexico. Similar to US, other countries should start issuing travel advisories and warn their citizens to not to travel to the US.
This is the FIFA who has hosted the last two World Cups in Russia and Qatar, and will soon host one in Saudi Arabia? You think FIFA has standing to take a principled stance on human rights?
Oops – meant in response to ‘Grace’ way down the comments!
@Grace Farris I’m with you! My subway takes take would 100% be ‘No movie should be longer than 90 minutes’!
Thanks for the 90 minute solidarity! If I was ever on Las Culch my “I don’t think so honey” would be railing against 3 hour movies.
No words for the brave women and men protesting decades of repression under a brutal theocratic ruler in Iran?! Their courage is beyond comprehension to me – risking their lives to take to the streets to demand freedom. We must amplify their voices and pleas for their rights and not leave them alone at this critical moment.
I came here to write the same thing!! Why is the MSM so quiet on what is going on in Iran? Thousands of Iranians have died in the last few days fighting for their freedom! These women are true feminists! God bless them all! Free Iran!
If you like embroidered art work, take a look at Deidre Scherer of Williamsville, VT.
I am all for protests and showing support, but this upcoming women’s protest seems to be planned from a place of privilege. Many women can’t afford to risk jobs and income by walking out at 2 p.m. on a weekday. I am a public school teacher. If I leave my class to walk out, I may as well leave a resignation letter on my desk. Well intentioned but not realistic for most.
Agreed (teacher here too)
Hi! I plan on having a moment of silence at 2pm and then having a circle discussion about peace, community, and how we can show up for our immigrant neighbors. I’m also thinking of reaching out to a jr high in Minneapolis; I’d like my students to send caring messages to their students to let them know we are thinking of them during all this violence.
I wonder if you can symbolically do something? Write a thought provoking quote on the board and discuss it. True protest is building up a generation of people who will never vote for suck an utter fucktard! The entire world is suffering because of how the nation voted.
Not everyone has to be included in every protest and that is ok. Protesting during a time that disrupts businesses work.
I understand the post being paywalled, but would someone be kind enough to just drop the title of the sex book being recommended? Asking for a friend……

I protested in my city today. Phoebe Wahl has a beautiful free print if you need one https://phoebewahl.shop/products/free-abolish-ice-poster-digital-download
Thank you for this link!
I really like Phoebe Wahl. I buy her cards and books. I saw she is going to be at Books Are Magic in Brooklyn doing a story time 4pm February 18. I thought of Jo and all of you New Yorkers when I saw that. :)
OMG! It’s Nina of the postcard rack fame! My book is called HOW TO COMMIT A POSTCOLONIAL MURDER! and eeep! my book is on the list of – Novels everyone will be talking about in 2026! I nearly dropped my toddler when I saw my book! I restarted the book with a newborn – so can’t believe this is happening! x Hope you all got postcard racks!
That’s so exciting Nina! Postcard rack is still on my wishlist for when we finish our house renovations!
Hi Nina, congratulations!! I remember thr postcard rack but can’t find the link. If you have a moment would you mind sending it here? Thanks so much and looking forward to reading your book!
Isobel, here’s the link: cupofjo.com/2024/09/23/readers-cozy-corners-2/ And a tip on how to find things in the future, search for the word/phrase restricted to the specific site…like this: “postcard rack” site:cupofjo.com
NINA!!!! that is so amazing!!!!!!
Fab thank you for the link Kleo and the tip for searching! I will use that in future, I hadn’t realised!
Thank you all! It’s so unexpected and happy. And I am so proud of writing and selling this book with two kids under 5. Whew. I’ll be at Greenlight on Feb 12 if there are any Cup of Jo readers in NYC!
If you crave a wild whodunnit, don’t miss the Netflix series, HIS&HERS. Wow. Perfect rainy day, tea break keeps you guessing television.
Yessss, Marty Supreme was incredible! High Safdie energy, such a unique cast, bonkers fun, and what an incredible showcase of Timothee Chalamet’s talents. Not to jinx it so early, but I sincerely hope he’s getting his Oscar this year!
We’ve lived with the “screeze” (screamsneeze) and the “snell” (sneezeyell) for years. Once when my daughter was 11 and she was having friends over she said to her dad, “You aren’t allowed to sneeze when my friends are here.”
re: Rama Duwaji, her expression! It is Mona Lisa-like – just perfect, wow. She is someone I would love to have dinner with.
Beautiful photos! The photos are from a feature in NY Mag – they interviewed her!
I’m not a restaurant regular these days but I am a grocery store regular (Trader Joe’s specifically) and I know the employees and they know me. They greet me with so much warmth, and I’ve grown to be more excited about catching up with them on my weekly trips to the store than actually getting my shopping done.
Trump is 100% targeting Minneapolis because he hates Ilhan Omar, is threatened by her and is basically a fucking racist. He doesn’t mind cavorting with rich, Arab Muslims, but regular, middle class black Muslims is when his racist Islamaphobic side comes out.
A few weeks ago I asked this community for recommendations for a first time traveler to NYC. I just got back from my trip and wanted to thank everyone who provided thoughtful suggestions – it served as a helpful compass for me as I explored different areas of the city. A few highlights from my trip: – Shows – The Putnam County’s 25th Annual Spelling Bee (thank you Michelle) was exceptional! Buena Vista Social Club was as well! I loved the experience of buying tickets from the box office – not something I’m used to being able to do in my city :) – Walking the High Line and Brooklyn Bridge (thank you Melanie) – Central Park – Washington Square Park – Joe’s Pizza, Apollo Bagels, Joe Coffee, Black Press Coffee – Blueberry pancakes from Clinton St Baking – Vintage shopping (the NYC Vintage app was very helpful. Special shout outs to OOH LA LA in the Upper West Side and Thea Grant in Brooklyn) – Visiting the Stonewall Monument and Strand Bookstore (thank you Jojo) – Visiting the 9/11 memorial museum – Riding the subway – for me this was an incredible experience. I was nervous to do it but was so glad that I did because it made exploring so easy and affordable (the directions in google maps work really well). Compared to my local transit system I was amazed at how safe and clean it was. Overall as a solo traveler I felt very safe and couldn’t recommend the city enough for female solo travel. I am already planning my next trip back! Thank you to the input from this community for helping make my first trip to NYC a delight!
Aaah! I’m bowled over by your thoughtfulness and glad you had a wonderful trip! Seeing musicals always makes me happy. You also have some spots listed here that I need to check out myself!
Thanks so much for sharing an update! Sounds like you painted the town red! Many happy returns to NYC!
Marty Supreme wasn’t my cup of tea. Hope it’s better for you.
What is happening in Minnesota and frankly the whole world because of one government is just not easy to handle mentally. The whole world order as it was seems to be in danger because common rules are ignored. We are sliding towards medieval times, where men of power just took what they wanted regadless of any harm they did to the people and everyone was too scared to intervene. Please promise us fellow readers outside the US that you carry on fighting for everything common sense. I am scared for the world and our peace right now and I am usually a really optimistic person. Hard to keep that going during the last weeks and months. Take gentle care of yourself and give your neighbours an extra big hug today.
Hello Anni, it’s not medieval times but the world as it was in the first part of the XXth century… and even afterwards… there is always hope and it is sthg we must cultivate. Love from Paris
The 25th amendment should be done nvoked but of course Vance won’t do it. Hope the leader of this calaminity is impeached after the midterms. Or before, but not enough people in government are doing much. Bernie and Ro Kahnna are doing tangible things. There are a few others. But many are just talking on news shows and not doing much. This is all so horrific. Nancy Pelosi said he has not yet crossed the line this term needed to consider impeachment. Really ????????
I assure you that SO MANY of us are fighting the good fight, every single day – even if the for-profit news media shamefully chooses not to cover it.
I just wanted to say that I can relate, Anni. I have also always been an optimistic person, but lately I am truly concerned about where the world is headed. Sigh.
I just got home from a town hall with one of our Oregon senators. We all need to keep showing up and speaking up. Go to all the protests. Boycott Amazon, Home Depot, Target and the other companies who are kowtowing to his nonsense. Sign up for alerts with Indivisible and 50501. Stay informed and involved! We need to have 3.5% of the population protesting. Historically, that has brought about regime change. (You might want to google it.) Volunteer to help with getting out the vote for the midterms! We’ve got to do everything we can. Thank you!
Re: TV shows, I am looking forward to ‘Shrinking’ being back. I need that heartwarming escapism in my life right now.
Same here! I’m rewatching last season in anticipation of season 3!
Thank you Jo for providing space for political content! I am German, I am trying to ignore US internal politics (can’t ignore external- stop that Greenland shit, what do you want, war with Europe?) as we‘ve enough troubles of our own. But the shooting, or rather the political response to that shooting, is just – ir keeps me awake. We’ve had two recent dictatorships in Germany, as you can see with the GDR you you don’t need mass murders to qualify for one. That no one is above the law, that you can protest and speak your mind without repercussions (or fear for your safety!), that people don’t just vanish, that politicians don’t just make up there own reality- that’s nothing to take for granted
The smartest, short-term move coming from Europe would be, i.m.o., to boycott the FIFA World Cup. Alas, there is probably too much money involved.
I saw Marty Supreme tonight too! When my bf asked if I liked it, I told him liked is a strong word…. 😳😱😬😰
Ooh the Pakistani novel. Feeling seen!+
LOL I am 100% the Pixie Squeak. A former manager used to call it a kitten sneeze. My current coworker has the same sneeze and I finally feel seen (heard??). Now, when my husband sneezes it literally makes me want to punch him in the face, it’s so loud. I will tell him “I love you, but it’s taking all I have not to punch you right now.” He gets it.
I am truly crushing on the first lady of New York City. that photo shoot is amazing. She’s so intriguing and I love how she’s keeping private in a world that shares too much. I love her vibe!
From Canada I am trying to hold some of the sadness about this woman who was killed in Minneapolis. I can’t imagine the daily terror of having ice in your midst. Know that people all over the world are holding their breaths for her, for you, for the families and kids, for us all.
Thank you,neighbor <3
It’s Friday night and I’m exhausted, sad, and discouraged. My mom has dementia. When it’s out turn we drive 3.5 hours to her town, spend the night, spend 4 hours give or take with her, then drive home. It feels good to be with her, the visit are short as that seems to be a better fit for her, and it’s exhausting. Renee Good is on my mind, sitting beside me, a heavy truth about where we are. Tomorrow I’ll be rested, might make bread, and work on my knitting and some things will feel better.
After Renee’s murder, ICE is acting even more brazenly in MN because they see this as an opportunity to use fear to squash protestors. And it’s working. As a Brown woman, I am terrified of what ICE is doing. But it’s time for people to make their anger for this administration known. So I will be protesting this weekend, and walking out at 2 pm on Jan 20 from work (thankfully my job is not sensitive to disruptions). I am going to keep my US passport on me, for all the good that it will do.
I laughed more than I have in a long time over the sneezing article. I’ve come to realize that there are 2 distinct groups: those who love sneezing and those who find it to be disruptive. I am of the disruptive group. I just discovered recently that my 16-yr-old son LOVES to sneeze. He looks forward to it and finds it “cleansing.” What?!
Marty Supreme was like a breathless run up a hill. It was exhausting.
Loud sneezer here. One reason I think mine are loud is the size of my inhale when I feel that itch coming. It builds up slowly, sometimes ebbs and flows in the nanoseconds, and feels crummy when suppressed; sort of like an orgasm, actually! My husband hates the noise, and rightfully so. But I only really complete the sneeze when I take a full inhale, if that makes sense. On the rare occasions I have another sneeze right after, it is not as loud because the inhale right after the first sneeze, is smaller. Any takers agree with me?
Anna, I hear you (haha… probably from here, if you are as loud as sneezer as me). Joking aside, I understand! I have said it before and will say it again, medically speaking, it is not safe to suppress loud sneezes. It literally causes back injuries! (Eg: My mom’s chiropractor years ago told her that he regularly received patients who had hurt their backs suppressing a sneeze). I have tried to “quiet sneeze” and I simply can’t! So I guess we need to chalk this up as celebrating diversity! We can’t all be quiet sneezers.
So many books I will have to read. Several by my favorite authors. Thank you for the list.
Sending love and care to my fellow Minnesotans in the comments. Echoing your cry: call your representatives! ICE is showing up at schools and spraying tear gas. Community members are afraid to leave their homes to buy groceries. A beloved woman and mother was killed. My kid, a member of his 5th grade school safety patrol, should not be on the lookout for ICE while helping people cross the street. We are sad and tired, and this needs to end.
Kelsey, my dad does this with fruit, too! Now that I am the snack-pusher at my house, I really appreciate how effortless he made this look. What an act of love.
MN mom of 4 here living just miles from where ICE has setup their HQ in our community. It’s horrifying what is happening. I’m not sure national news has fully displayed our daily reality. Our children’s schools are either closed or 25% (or more) of students are absent because they are stalking school bus routes, outside our school buildings, and arresting U.S. citizens in the entryways of our local Target seemingly ignoring that anyone has any rights when ICE is present (just some of numerous, devastating examples of their barbaric strategies to terrorize our city). We need the entire nation to wake up to what is happening. Our children cannot attend school because our own government is making it unsafe. ICE is operating unchecked and seemingly no one can do anything to stop them. Please call your representatives, protest peacefully, vote in upcoming elections, use your voice and maybe together with one, loud voice change can really occur.
Hey I want to back this up. The metro area is seemingly teeming with these people and they’re absolutely just acting with impunity now. They’ve started showing up at schools. The whole city is scared and holding its breath, it feels like they’re bound to kill more people given how violently they’re reacting to protestors.
ABOLISH ICE. Will be marching on the 20th in solidarity with friends in Minneapolis, Chicago, Portland and LA.
I live just a couple of miles from the main ICE facility near Chicago and we were screaming our brains out when it was happening here in October and November and it just didn’t feel like anyone cared. Please know that we are watching and continuing to speak out. I wish I had better thoughts on what to say. It’s horrific.
Just got home from work and was so awed coming by the presence of protesters on all 4 corners of the little intersection in my tiny town of 4,000.
Love to you all from the southwest. Thank you for holding the line and sounding an alarm. ❤️ Calling my reps.
I need to support this, too. It’s not just the horrific murder, it’s all the people who are hiding in their homes, it’s ICE showing up at our schools and taking our educators, it’s the agents roaming the streets with giant guns and grabbing people out of cars and off sidewalks. Everyone in my neighborhood is scared and stressed. Also, so much mutual aid has been organized, and it’s heartening to be part of, but it’s not enough. We need them gone. They’re attacking our city and terrorizing everyone who lives here. They forced our schools to close for two days because of their violent attacks. No one feels safe.
Yes! Fellow Minneapolis mom devastated and rocked by the senseless, extreme ICE presence right now, especially around schools. Impossible to explain to my seven year old why schools are closed- and we are white and privileged- truly don’t know how parents who are more vulnerable are navigating all of this. A teacher friend talked about the horrors of preparing to protect students against their own government. It is devastating and terrorizing.
Also chiming in. It’s terrifying to be in Minneapolis right now, where these goons are invading our city and seemingly looking for any excuse to shoot someone. We want our beautiful city back. Please, COJ readers, do whatever you can to help end this horror, whether through voting, protesting, calling reps, conversation, and helping your immigrant friends and neighbors.
I’m so sorry you (Minneapolis) are dealing with this. I live in Los Angeles. It is horrible. And that’s the part we see. After people are abducted and locked away, they are starved and hidden in places so that their families can’t find them. You’re right – it’s barbaric. I don’t understand how anyone supports this.
I feel the same way. We are under siege. Please send strength to MN.
I want to add something I learned from calling my representative yesterday. My local, very Republican Rep has actually started staffing his phone line with a human. I asked the human how they were responding to these calls, and they said that they were adding notes and data and tabulating calls for the “legislative team,” but also that they were unable to add any notes unless the person calling left their name and address and made clear that they were a voting constituent of the Rep. They said that most people calling were unwilling to leave their names. Now, not everyone is in a position to leave names and addresses with a legislator in this way; it requires a certain degree of privilege to feel safe doing so (and of course there may be some risk for anyone, depending on how things go–?). But I do think that calling and being willing to give name and address is a helpful extra step these days.
I live about 20 minutes from downtown & we ALL feel this statewide. Yesterday a bakery near me had agents come in claiming to be doing a survey & asking the owner if she thought any of her neighbors were breaking the law. I was also driving to a student’s home (I work with students at their homes sometimes for our school district) & I saw agents going door to door. So disturbing:(
Also here to support this message. Renee Good was shot less than a mile from my kid’s school and 3 miles from my house. They are stalking hospital beds, threatening kids at bus stops so they can arrest the parents when they come out to help, and tear gassing elderly white bystanders at protests who have said not one word and done not one thing but stand witness. They are using multiple people to corner one roofer in freezing temps. Our undocumented population is 10% of Florida’s and 5% of Texas. The agenda is evident. A few weeks ago they arrested a woman in her 60s for taking a video, held her for well over 8 hours without telling her husband where she was or what the charges were, and cut off her wedding ring. This is reality. The good news: The grassroots here have awakened and everyday people are taking action. if you can give, please give to COPAL MN who does an incredible amount of work on the ground.
Sending you love from Chicago. They’re evil.
Thank you for sharing this! The more people that know what’s going on the better. Please stay safe.
Hi there, writing from Canada. I am so very sorry for what is happening in your city and state — and your country. It sounds terrifying, and from afar, it’s deeply unsettling. There have been several turning points in the last year and the murder of Renee Good and the government’s support for that murder feels very serious. I did see images online of ICE protests today (Saturday) with more on Sunday: “A broad national coalition… is calling for a coordinated ICE Out For Good Weekend of Action on Saturday, January 10, and Sunday, January 11. In less than 24 hours after the announcement, there are already 1000 events anticipated nationwide.” Find a local event here: http://www.mobilize.us?tag_ids=29132 I hope this helps people feel less alone.
this is terrifying. terrifying.
Ontarian here – we get a lot of coverage about what’s happening, but I’m sure it’s got nothing on the terror of actually living within it. I remember learning in grade school that Canadians and Americans are special neighbors that will always have each other’s backs. It hurts to know that it’s limited to well wishes when significant action would be needed most. Good luck, dear friends.
Hi, neighbors! <3 Yes, this is the truth. ICE is everywhere and they have no fear, no shame, no care for human life. My neighbors ran towards them yesterday as they abducted a family from their home and were told, with guns pointed at them, "Haven't you learned your lesson yet?" Please know: the only thing these people learned from Renee Good's murder is that they can get away with it. We can and must go out into our communities, meet our neighbors, march, vote and CALL OUR REPS. Don't let anyone representing you hear the end of this. With love and (somehow, still) so much hope from Minneapolis. Go out into your communities, meet your neighbors, march, vote and CALL YOUR REPS. Don't let anyone representing you hear the end of this. With love and somehow still so much hope from Minneapolis.
my god, this is just terrible…
I’m not in the US so this is a genuine question, are people who voted for Trump regretting it? Or are they still stuck in their echo chambers and still convinced that their choice was the right choice?
Ice is going door to door in my neighborhood. (St. Paul). Because everyone was protesting in Minneapolis, they were horrifying to the communities in Saint Paul, which are THE most diverse in the state. Having worked for St Paul Public Schools, I am telling you that St. Paul is the most diverse public school district n the state of MN for a reason. All of our restaurants and businesses are being closed because workers cannot safely go to and from work. I’m talking restaurants and businesses that are not white owned. It’s a ghost town everywhere. Target Corporation is allowing this to happen in our community with Ice Agents sitting in the parking lot and waiting for drive ups. They are sitting in gas station parking lots. They are harassing everyone. My coworkers are terrified to come to work. I live in a super Latino and Hmong community, proudly and our community is terrified. Last night, Noem announced they are sending hundreds more agents into our communities.
Sending solidarity from DC too. ICE has been in our city for a long time and we have been under national guard occupation since August. People tend to forget about us but there are very real people living in the District. In fact, there are 700k of us who do not have congressional representation or full local governmental autonomy and are therefore completely at the whims of this evil administration. Keep protesting, using your voice and calling your reps to ask for change. Some of us have no one to call.
I am appalled by what is happening and disgusted. Those in power seem to have zero dignity for the office they hold and spread inflammatory rhetoric. Prior to last week, I had retorted to watching “West Wing” to have a sense of hope that bright minded, sane folks who want to to do the right thing can also be in politics. But now, I feel that there is no hope and who am I kidding. I ended up watching this painful article by NY time yesterday: https://youtu.be/9ws1r6CaSXs?si=eXknKOg_A-AYYrkZ And I am shook. Blowing up doors/Windows of a home of American citizens, for what? Are they trying to capture Osama Bin Laden! And for Kristi Noem to come and parrot that they are following guidelines, law etc is awful. Who is going to pay for all the damages? Frankly, I am actually now surprised that there wasnt a fatal event before last week, given how ICE has been operating like total thugs, bullies, with zero accountability
Very traumatic and scary in Minnesota right now. This reign of terror is despicable.
Oh my dad does the fruit thing too, and it makes me feel so loved. He does it with his kids, any visitors, and now all his grandkids. He also offers cups of tea all the time– decaf for the kids. As far as the tea goes, it’s a British thing, and it’s the best!! I always say yes and end up drinking 5 cups of tea per day when I’m with him. My normal count is zero– more of a coffee girl on my own.
We joke that my dad can smell a kettle boiling, there’s never a cup of tea he has declined.
The sneeze rankings made me laugh out loud. My partner sneezes, daily multiple times in a row. Like, 15 maybe. Every day. Sometimes it’s a morning thing, sometimes night, and it’s so aggravating. The WORST is the scream-sneeze. Why do your vocal cords need to be fully activated here? I had a coworker once that scream-sneezed, in an open office floor plan, and everyone’s nerves were shot on a daily basis. It’s so startling. Finally, I’m in Minneapolis. We went to the candlelight vigil for Renee Good last night, and are planning to attend the protest this weekend. It is heavy, and very sad. I sincerely hope her death wasn’t entirely in vain, and that perhaps she can spark some needed change. This is a crying shame, and all for….what exactly? How is this worth whatever this administration is attempting to do?? Terrorizing the public isn’t good!
I’m in Minneapolis. I can’t find words.
💔
I’m so sorry! Protests are popping up today January 10th in places like California and I will be there! We see you! We stand with you!
We see you snd stand with you! Pop up protests are happening in places like California today January 10th! You are not alone!
If you liked Uncut Gems, you’ll love Marty Supreme. I loved both but if a high intensity Safdie movie isn’t for you, then you won’t “get” the hype.
Some time in the last year or two, I, a woman in my mid-forties have embraced the Dad sneeze. It will no longer be just for Dads! I own sneezing at the top of my lungs with the confidence of an older Dad. There’s nothing lady like or demure about it and I gotta tell you, it feels good. Haters gonna hate, but I say don’t knock it til you try it.
I’ve got the dad sneeze down, too! I seriously can’t help it. I’ve learned to laugh and embrace it, too. Life’s too short.
You’re edging the atmosphere – hahhahhaha
Wow – Marty Supreme. I saw it with 4 friends and we all staggered out of the theater, looked at each other and said “Whew, that was exhausting!” It is dense and rich, beautifully filmed, and I loved how the faces of the cast seem to have come from a different era.
I love Tim Chamalees energy. Want to see this movie!
so jealous! it’s not out til march here. doing my best to avoid all spoilers…
My 11 year old plays table tennis. So intense, 4x a week. We go all around the country with him for every US open. He wants to watch the movie but I doubt it is appropriate. What do you think?
Definitely not for 11 year olds! Lots of violence, some sex. I had a hard time watching a scene as an adult.
I am honestly afraid to participate in any form of protest. Is it just me? I absolutely abhor what is happening in this country, but the violence is escalating and I don’t see it getting any better. There are too many trigger-happy people out there who will use anything as an excuse to shoot anyone who dares criticize Trump or this administration. And, apparently our leaders don’t have our backs.
I get this Beth. As a person with a physical disability, I am not protesting in person either. There are many many many other ways that we can contribute. Since I live in Minneapolis that looks like: supporting my friend and her husband who are on the streets and on the phones every day protecting their immigrant/black and brown neighbors from ice (bring bread! Sit with her! Answer her calls no matter what I am doing), inviting kids over for play dates whose parents can’t leave the house, supporting the neighborhood patrollers (pastries are always welcome and so are sincere words of appreciation), and contributing financially to those who can’t leave their homes to work due to the threat of state sanctioned kidnapping. There are verified fundraisers for these folks posted on Bluesky for example by city council members and PTAs. I truly believe if we put the question of “how can I help right now?” out to the universe (or get still and ask ourselves ) then we will find our own right ways 💕
I’m afraid and I’m more afraid of wha happens if this continues. The violence against people continues and I can’t keep hoping that somehow it misses me, doesn’t target me, that I’m safe even while others are experiencing this. What leaders are you referring to as well? There are leaders speaking out against these acts and doing what they can to highlight and fight against what is happening. It won’t be one event that stops this. It will be a series of pebbles and rocks being laid as a path to an event that is seen as changing things. And if protest isn’t available to you, what is available to you? Can you give time or money to campaigns or to community organizations. Protest is powerful and it needs to be with other actions.
It scares me too Beth and I still go. I read something a while back that said, “If you’re scared, do it scared.” It’s advice for anything really, but it definitely applies here. The positive is that every anti-Trump protest I have gone to has left me feeling stronger and more empowered. There are people from all walks of life there, and I guarantee you the majority of them are just as afraid as you and me. But there’s solidarity in all being there with each other, showing up for each other.
I understand your worry. There is still PLENTY you can do to fight for democracy that isn’t attending a protest. – https://5calls.org/ – have bold conversations about what’s at stake with friends, family, and colleagues – donate money to pro-democracy causes – etc. They aren’t going to stop and we can expect the extreme actions to increase. We all need to do what we can. Thank you! <3
Not just you, Beth, it is scary. I have a hard time imagining how things will get better too. And yet, I do think it’s really important that some of us are out there doing it scared—not having visible protests right now is even scarier to me and the unfortunate reality is that I’m at risk of violence lots of other places too. BUT everyone’s risk factors are different and it’s not the right choice for everyone. There are lots of lower risk actions (donating blood, coordinating childcare or grocery deliveries for neighbors, helping orgs with admin work, etc.) that are so important too, and none of us can do it all.
I just donated to my state’s ACLU. There are so many different ways to show up and every little bit makes a difference!
That fear is real! It’s important to find a way to protest that fits your ability/brainspace/life/realm of possibility. Better to make phone calls and/or write letters (or donate money, or make soup for protesting neighbors, or whatever feels doable to you) than feel defeated and beat yourself up because you can’t bring yourself to protest outside, in a large group, etc. Do what you can, with as much resistant joy and righteous indignation as you can muster.
I’m a protest monitor, and my Signal chat lit up Wednesday with a call for monitors for an emergency protest after Renee Good’s murder. I went – not because I wasn’t and am not now afraid, but because NONE of us should have to be afraid, and I can’t think of any other way of getting there. I agree, our leaders don’t have our backs; we have to have our backs.
This Ibram X. Kendi quote from the other day is good: “We can sit there and worry about will happen to us if we resist ICE and the regime. Now is the time to stand up and recognize what will happen to us if we don’t resist ICE and the regime.” I’m going to be honest and tell you I have the same worries and I go out despite having those worries. I created a visibility brigade in my town and we’ve done 42 bridge protests since March, in addition to joining the big No Kings protests. I’m 44 and prior to this year I had participated in 2 protests. The fear they’re creating is what they what. Fascism is about fear and bullying. They want us frozen in fear and inaction. There is strength in numbers and this is only going to end when enough of us get out of our comfort zone and show we’ve had enough. Courage is contagious too.
I think it’s understandable to be afraid to protest but there are many other ways to be involved without physically protesting, so I hope you don’t let it stop you from doing anything at all.
You thought protesting once or twice was going to fix this? They want you afraid, they gain momentum and they need you to comply im advance. It is going to take work to make things better again. It will not be overnight. Other people will die. Yes. But if you don’t do it now it will be much worse and will take much longer. You NEED to hold on to your critical mass. We outnumber them, but for the moment we are outorganized. Girl, FIND YOUR TRIBE. And if you have regained some energy also please look back for others and pull them along. We can do this.
You can be afraid and do it anyway. We’re not getting out of fascism or authoritarianism without people getting hurt, sadly. But we do it anyway because our rights are threatened and we’re losing our country.
I understand and not everyone is called to be at the front but people died to establish this country and I believe Renee Nicole Good died to trying to save it. Do what you can where you can.
You’re not the only one and it’s totally fine. There are lots of ways to make your voice heard.

i’m more scared of the police and ice than randoms with guns. i’ve been to a lot of protests, mostly the big no kings ones, and i’ve always felt pretty safe and they have been peaceful. but i live in a blue state.
It is scary and scaring us into compliance is exactly what they’re aiming for.
It is scary & I understand. There are other ways to resist: – Give to your local food banks, as they are taking care of our neighbors who cannot go outside for fear of ICE. Or volunteer! – TALK ABOUT IT. Talk about the facts at work, at home, in the grocery store. You don’t have to be inflammatory, but we must talk about what we are seeing with our own eyes and we must name it as the truth. – Go out and get to know your neighbors. Be in your community – be part of it. This is how we resist! We are stronger together. There are more of us against fascism than for it, but we must find each other and hold hands. Even small acts of resistance are resistance. Don’t give up hope!!
I am scared to. I know the importance of not sitting idly by the sidelines, and that if nobody does anything things will likely get worse. However, if I’m being honest, I am scared to do what needs to be done, or to be anywhere near ICE agents. you are not alone.
Ibram X. Kendi quote from the other day: “We can sit there and worry about what will happen to us if we resist ICE and the regime. Now is the time to stand up and recognize what will happen to us if we don’t resist ICE and the regime.” I understand your fears and often feel the same- I go out to protest despite my fears. Courage is contagious too. Honestly every white person with American citizenship should be out protesting as much as they can. This is only going to end when enough of us say, NO.
Protest with your money!!! don’t buy from places that support the administration – Target, Home Depot are two big ones. Find alternatives. In addition, support immigrant owned businesses in your community. Lastly, there are so many organizations to donate to to provide legal support and food, particularly in Minnesota where the administration has frozen SNAP benefits in retaliation to our state. Not everyone is able to physically show up. Protest in the ways that work for you!
On the other hand, I suggest going with a friend or group and trying protesting. I find such strength in participating with so many like minded people. It is contagious and uplifting. Get out there! We need to reach the level of 3.5% of the population protesting (www.bbc.com/future/article/20190513-it-only-takes-35-of-people-to-change-the-world), and that includes you! Together, we can do this.
Re. Dad Sneezes: One of my friends just posted today on FB that her husband has reached the life stage where he sneezes really loud. Their kids have responded by saying (or shouting) “BLESS YOU” at the same volume as his sneezes. Sharing in case anyone else needs this piece of genius in their lives. :)
Please note that people can’t help the volume at which they sneeze and it is not age related. If we can accept people’s gender fluidity or neurodivergence, certainly we can have a little grace toward someone who sneezes loudly?
Marty Supreme was too hyper. I had a hard time catching all the dialogue. Primes Steal looks interesting. I’m excited for an unexpected 4th season of HBO’s series, Industry. Pinned the salmon patties! The embroidery artist had been off my own radar, happy to revisit. This wknd we clean out the attic!! (Plenty of book sampling too)
Walk out of work at 2 pm? I’m a teacher & my husband an air traffic controller so I can’t imagine how that would help anything?!
Nationwide actions like this and, eventually, a general strike demonstrate just how widespread resistance to the administration’s actions has grown, and broad particcipation is crucial to that if we want them to fear for their jobs this fall. As the link explains, “Organizers will also cover options for people in sensitive or high-risk workplaces, so everyone can take part in a way that makes sense for them. Come with your questions — leave with a plan to help build a Free America.” Visibility across industries and demographics normalizes opposition to injustice and emboldens neighbors and peers who need encouragement to join up.
The point of a walk out *is* to be disruptive.
If you can’t participate in that, then what else can you do?
If you teach the upper grades your students will probably be walking out also
As other commenters have said, you can always find other ways to participate and protest. I do think it’s important to remember how many dictators and unjust presidents have been toppled throughout history by peaceful protest – by massive amounts of normal, everyday people showing up, making the time, and disrupting business as usual (peacefully).
A walkout is a form of a strike and supposed to be inconvenient and disruptive. That’s why they are so powerful. Look at historic examples (women’s rights in Iceland, France, Unions, … ) The more participate the safer it is for the Individuum. Please join us.
I understand where you’re coming from, Sophie. Most of us cannot risk job loss or reduced income, period. I think that mass, organized boycotting needs to take a bigger role. Does anyone know of any boycott movements? Recognizing it’s tough when so many corporations won’t stand up to Trump in the first place.
Then DON’T GO.
To Ash – Boycott Target, Home Depot and Amazon! Boycott’s work. My sister lives in Canada and many are boycotting all US products. Spotify was running ads for ICE recruitment. People boycotted and it worked! The ads were stopped.
I loved Marty supreme! A really fun part was the soundtrack.
I liked Marty Supreme but I don’t understand the statements that it’s the best film of the year. Sinners was beautifully acted, the music was amazing and the themes are so relevant now. I want Ryan Coogler to get his flowers!!!
I was profoundly disappointed with Marty Supreme. It’s a high-anxiety movie and has little to do with actual ping pong. Curious to know your thoughts!
Agreed! I liked some aspects of Marty Supreme and I thought Timothée Chalamet’s performance was great but it was VERY different from what I expected based on the trailer. Also, the dog plot just lost me.
Thank you Caroline! The dog sub plot was dumb and added an unnecessary 45+ minutes to the movie. I’m very annoyed by 2.5 hour movies becoming a thing. I love a tight 90 minutes or even 2 hours. Editing people!
I loved Marty Supreme! It’s about ambition, class, and being reckless enough to make your one true dream happen. I was swept up by the sheer gumption of the plot, the perfect casting, the styled to be average looking actors who made their roles extraordinarily real. The ride was exhilarating and the ending, deeply human and affecting. If I had to see one film all year, this is my pick.
We weren’t fans of Marty Supreme either despite anticipating enjoying it and liking Timothee Chalamet movies. He does a great job, but it was that we didn’t bond with Marty who was an ass much of the time. I have, however, bonded with other characters who were less than likeable (say, Sopranos folks) … This was a challenge throughout. And then so many walking out were saying how so much of the pingpong was CGI and I hadn’t actually thought about that 😂 Song Sung Blue, however, was a gem for me. My husband is not a Neil Diamond music kinda guy and endures Sweet Caroline at ballgames but he thoroughly enjoyed it as well. I went myself, talked it up and he agreed to come with me to watch it. Getting our money worth out of our regal unlimited plan! (Sorry if missing words in my comment… I can’t see the middle of what I’m typing when I try to proofread – it always zips to top or bottom on my phone. Is it just on my device?)
Did anyone else leave feeling totally disheartened? I thought it was well acted (though frankly I don’t care for Gwyneth Paltrow as she so often plays similar characters), but simply couldn’t find the point. Despite coming from a humble background, he proceeds to take advantage of everyone in his path with no regard for consequences or risk of danger. And, in the end, it seemed he was going to continue in the same vein of serving his own interests. Did he grow or evolve? Perhaps it’s simply not the right film for me: I generally don’t care for violence and cruelty for entertainment purposes, be it in book or movie format. My point, I suppose, is that I’m curious why it’s so popular. Is the plot resonating, or the character relatable? Is it escapist or entertaining, and I’m simply not the target audience? I couldn’t help but think of how much time, money , and talent went towards creating this film about yet another white man who disregards and hurts those around him and how much I would’ve preferred to see something that left me feeling inspired, hopeful, or empowered in this challenging time. I fully acknowledge I might be in the minority here as someone who didn’t care for the movie, but it really wasn’t my cup of tea. (I will say the sets and costumes were great!)
Superb acting, but too intense for me, and too long. I found Marty very un-likeable, and asked myself during the movie why I was spending my time watching a story about a narcissist.
OOF — I felt like a wrung out dishrag after sitting through Marty Supreme. Didn’t feel affection, interest or hope for a single character. blurrgh. That’s a few hours I’ll never get back.
THANK YOU! I feel like an alien not liking this film when all the reviews are calling it the film of the year. It did inspire my resolution to only watch movies that pass the Bechtel test in 2026…
