Would You Wear a Matching Wedding Look?

At first, Eryka (above, left) tried on only white dresses for her wedding. “I tried on every one out there,” she said, “and ran out of options. So, I opened myself up to color.” She and her fiancée Rachel ended up both wearing fuchsia on their big day. Here, three couples share their matching looks…
Eryka + Rachel

Eryka (left) and Rachel at City Hall.
Eryka: We were planning to get married in August 2026 in the lake town where Rachel grew up, but after the 2024 presidential election, we felt it was important to get our ducks in a row before the inauguration in January 2025. We had two months.
Rachel: Although nontraditional, a colorful wedding outfit felt natural to me. I knew I wanted to wear a suit, and I’ve always liked a fluorescent palette. Because we were on a tight timeline, the question was, what options are available? I knew I’d find things that fit well and feel good at J. Crew.

Eryka: When I decided to move away from white dresses, Instagram’s algorithm fed me a pink Banana Republic dress, and it just clicked.

Rachel: At first, I worried that we might be too matchy-matchy. But Eryka had a vision, and she’s pretty much always right about aesthetic choices.
Eryka: Solange’s wedding had been burned in my brain since I saw the pictures back in 2014. I love how she and her husband both wore white and looked so slick and cohesive. Matching is something we wouldn’t really do outside of this experience, so it made it feel special.
Andrew + Dae

Andrew (left) and Dae during their first look.
Andrew: From the start, we liked the idea of wearing similar outfits to emphasize us coming together in marriage. We found an amazing tailor in L.A. — Jerry at JB Clothiers. He even custom-made our shirts and added details like our initials. I loved that we matched but had subtle differences in our looks and wore different shoes.

Dae: We landed on white tuxes with black trim. We didn’t want to look traditional but also didn’t want to look too trendy, and the white tuxes felt like a perfect in-between. We also put our wedding party in black.

Dae: I think so much of a heterosexual wedding is focused on the bride’s look, but that just isn’t us. We wanted to see each other shine, but also shine together as a unit. I hate when friends combine names like Bennifer, but it really became a DaeDrew moment.
Katie + Mike

Katie: I had been married before and wore a traditional dress, but neither that marriage nor dress were as ‘me’ as I wanted to be this time.

Mike: I was thinking about a sophisticated look involving florals — something blue, plus winter whites. This coat turned out to be exactly what I was looking for.
Katie: Mike settled on that jacket, and I was still looking around at ideas when I found a matching corset. That’s what pulled it together.

Mike: Matching brought home the feeling that the two of us are in it together.
Katie: And it brought a sense of gender equality to the occasion, which is really critical to us.
Congratulations to all the gorgeous couples!
P.S. Would you wear a short wedding dress, and how did you make your wedding feel true to you?

73 commentsIt was not intentional, but for the first decade of my marriage, my husband and I would wind up wearing matching clothes without realizing it. One day, a student said they saw me and my husband out walking and were struck by how my husband and i wore matching outfits. It was a revelation to me. Suddenly, I realized we were always matching! I made a pint of not being so matchy matchy after that but now, almost 30 years in, I think it is cute if it happens.
I love all these looks and hope this becomes a huge trend!
OBSESSED
The queers love a matching set – I say this and I am queer so I can!
My anniversary is tomorrow! My straight lady pet peeve is that people continue to ask ME how I picked out my husband’s fantastic wedding outfit. The one that he envisioned and put together. Because he’s also a person with both agency and style?
Happy anniversary! I’ve known a lot of straight fellas in my lifetime, and I’ll say that about 90% of them didn’t have much interest in their wardrobes. For instance, I love my partner dearly, but I know he’d much rather I curate his entire closet. I’m glad you bagged one that realizes just how much enjoyment can come from loving your own style!
Any suggestions for dresses to wear to a black tie wedding in New York in the fall? Thanks in advance!
Eryka’s bouquet!!!!!!!!!!
You can’t help but smile when you see that fuchsia – it just screams joy! Love it!
à propos of love, i randomly read the featured comment in this post from Tara, the single mom by choice whose new date bought blueberries for her baby abd loved kimchi. Tara, if you’re reading, I would love to hear how you’re doing! You are obviously a gifted storyteller and deserve all good things!
the featured comment in THIS post: https://cupofjo.com/2023/05/12/have-a-great-weekend-58/ haha, this is why I shouldn’t comment before having coffee
I agree. I would love to know. Those blueberries held promise. But also maybe they were just blueberries
Congratulations to all three beautiful couples! Eryka and Rachel — thank you for choosing Golden Sol Florista to design your florals. And Sylvie, you captured the joy perfectly. Feeling grateful for all the love in the comments — we need all the joy we can gather in these times. 💐✨
Jessica, I’m in love with Rachel’s pocket bouquet!
Seriously the pocket bouquet is sooooooooooooo good!!!
The embroidery above the suit pocket on Rachel is EXQUISITE!
Oh! Joy is the best medicine right now and wedding joy is the best! Thanks!
Love this so much! Getting married in exactly one month and my fiancé and I will be matching (as he’ll wear a traditional ivory barong jacket), but now I’m itching for magenta! These are all so beautiful!
Here’s a question for the group: for those who are divorced, what did you do with your wedding dress? My mom and I made mine, it’s beautiful and special for that reason especially now that she’s gone. It was exactly the dress I wanted even though the marriage wasn’t.
Donated it to the Salvation Army, then it hung in their front window for a long time and I had a little chuckle every time I walked by! Obviously yours has more meaning, so you could turn it into a pillow/baptism dress/table cloth/shortened cocktail dress or just keep it as is as an homage to what you and your mom made together.
You could do this! https://www.bethswansonart.com/
I love them all. What a great idea the fuchsia is my favorite.
The color on my screen must be so off because Eryka and Rachel look like they are wearing flaming red. Does anyone else see this on their screen? Now I wonder what else I’m seeing in the wrong color.
Need that fuschia dress, PLEASE
I love these outfits, especially the fuchsia! As another poster said, Indian weddings often have the bride and groom in matching colors, usually gold, ivory or red. But if you want a treat for your eyes, here’s some pictures of Indian brides and grooms matching in everything from lavender to carrot: https://www.wedmegood.com/blog/couples-are-coordinating-in-cool-new-colours-we-love-it/ And here’s one with matching PRINTS! https://www.wedmegood.com/blog/cutest-colour-coordinated-haldi-outfits-for-couples/
Love seeing these matching looks! Thanks for sharing.
THESE ARE INCREDIBLE! thank you so much for sharing! i looked at them last night and then dreamed i was at a wedding in india. if only ☺️💕
Wow! These outfits are all so gorgeous!
I like the idea of coordinated outfits for couples getting married. It wasn’t the thing when my husband and I were married 47 years ago.
Ha! It worked for us 42 years ago.
One of the most beautiful weddings I’ve seen is a student couple from Brazil got married during a normal weekend Catholic Mass. So, the congregation and some members of their families were there. They joined the entrance processional and the recessional and their vows were after the homily. AND she wore an amazing burgundy and gold dress and he picked up those colors. It was refreshing to see two people get married in a normal mass. I think some times we think church weddings as hugely complex, but you could do this (with planning) at any Mass. I loved their relaxed attitude toward it. It makes me wonder if this is more common elsewhere.
very common in mexico! i think all Masses have to be open to everyone. this meant that during COVID restrictions, i had to sneak into my best friend’s wedding because they were at capacity and strangers had gotten there before some of the wedding party 😆
This is the gorgeousness and good cheer I needed today! Each couple is fabulous, the fuschia is STUNNING! And the pocket flowers, I am weeping with glee! Love love love to these couples, may they be blessed and have good fortune beyond measure for all of their lives.
Hey Kim, Thank you 💕💕💕 💐💐💐 The pocket boutonnière had main character energy. IG: golden.sol.florista
These are all amazing, but the flower arrangement in Rachel’s pocket is NEXT LEVEL.
came here to say the same.
Getting married while donning a riot of color is a glorious way to start a life together, as is matching. I love seeing people do their wedding the way they want to, although it is heartbreaking that a couple had to move up the date. Love, Freedom, and Humanity for all.
This is terrific! Eryka’s bouquet is one of the most fantastically beautiful floral arrangements I’ve ever seen!! Of course, the complementary colors and the pocket flowers set it off perfectly, but all compliments to whoever made it!!!
Hi Anne, Thank you 💕💕💕 Erika’s bouquet and Rachel’s pocket boutonnière are on my favorite list. I loved creating it for them. IG: golden.sol.florista
We matched, and it was magnificent! I wore a traditionally styled dress — corset top, poofy skirt, satin — in blood red. It was a Jessica McClintock prom dress; cost me all of $200. My husband wore a red suit and black and red shirt. I made a red tulle veil and had red cat-eye rhinestone sunglasses for the reception. We had matching footwear, boots for him and mary jane creepers for me: black leather with flames all over them. It was very fun, very us, very1999 San Francisco.
This sounds absolutely amazing.
This sounds absolutely smashing!
This sounds like the *exact* dress I wore to prom in a similar timeframe. Oh how I LOVED that dress! I’m bet you looked fantastic!
EEG, that would be so much fun if it was the same dress! I just dug up a photo so we could compare, and I see that mine has a bustle, which I’d forgotten. Did yours? https://www.instagram.com/p/C-Inif4PKF2/?img_index=1
I loved seeing the joy in these photos!! Honestly, JOY is my resistance right now. Celebrating gorgeous wedding looks for all kinds of love, seeing little kids and blow-up dinosaurs protesting, helping my kid invite a new friend over to play, sending giant pans of pasta to a new moms and meeting new humans… it all brings the joy and that is what I am hanging onto right now. Ronald Dump and his awful ilk can crap on everyone and everything that makes this country great, but they cannot steal the joy I have for the little nooks and crannies of life, which includes this wonderful community!
JOY is indeed the secret sauce. It is the thing that cannot be stolen. replicated, cancelled or clawed back. Tho it is contagious! I agree and applaud you ,<3
Joy and happiness are an act of rebellion and resistance. They want us cowering and afraid, especially afraid of each other. But we know there are millions and millions of us and we won’t give up.
All beautiful couples! I really like the coordination, it’s so special!
Every time you post about weddings, I think about this one: https://www.instagram.com/p/DLxGuinxeFu/?hl=de&img_index=1 which makes me feel “oh my life, I want to feel this level of hope, togetherness, ease and love, too. It is possible, so very much possible.” and I am happy. Also, congrats to all here :)
My colleague got married in the redwoods of NorCal. She dyed her dress her favorite color, and they camped out with their friends and family. Another friend of mine had their food “catered” by fellow attendees/church goers, and it was some of the BEST wedding food I ever ate, all home cooked, with so much love, so humble. 35 years later and I still remember that over any fancy meal I ate a wedding.
My husband and I did not match on our wedding day but now that we’ve been married for ten years I feel like we match every day! Dude are you seriously wearing jeans and a blue and white striped shirt too!?!
Hahaha same!! My husband and I have known each other for 20 years, together for 8, married for 6, and we constantly accidentally dress in matching outfits 😂
I am divorced and have been for many years. During the divorce process, my now-ex and I met once with an accountant to ask some basic tax-related questions. She seemed to find us strangely entertaining and at one point asked “Do you still live together?” The answer was no; we’d been separated for several months by then. This fact seemed to entertain her. She was jollier and jollier and wouldn’t let us pay for the appointment. Afterward I realized we had shown up in matching outfits: khaki bottoms (pants for him and skirt for me), olive green t-shirts and orange zip-up tops over that. We looked like the mid-divorce Bobbsey Twins! But we got some free — and useful — tax advice, so it was all worth it.
Same. We didn’t dress alike in the beginning, but 20 years in, our styles have definitely merged.
I loved everything about this—except the part about having to move up a wedding because of the current state of things in the U.S. Mazel to one and all, and here’s hoping no future generation has to rush to the altar thanks to fascists.
YES to all of this
I feel like color coordinated wedding looks are pretty common thing in recent Indian weddings. Most Indian celebs who got married in recent years followed this trend where bride and groom follow a certain color palette..so it feels less match-y and still aesthetically pleasing
All of the weddings are lovely! The pink is absolutely gorgeous with the flowers. And the pink outfits are from J. Crew and Banana Republic💜
What beautiful pairs! Hubs and I had matching colors, a creamy off white. We also wore matching sneakers. His casual suit was from the Sears catalog and my dress was a repurposed sample from my family’s bridal shop in Brooklyn. 1983.
I went to a beautiful wedding recently where the grooms wore coordinating suits. One groom wore a burgundy suit with a mauve bowtie, and the other groom wore a mauve suit with a burgundy bowtie. They looked fabulous together! They also walked down the aisle together both before and after the ceremony, which I thought was so sweet.
We love you Eryka + Rachel!!!!
Gorgeous looks and lovely couples! The fuschia and florals are to die for!!
Agree! Swoon.
Hi Emily Thank you 💕💕💕 💐💐💐 IG: golden.sol.florista
Ooh I love this!!! ❤️
I love all of these looks and now that I think about it I wonder why coordinated wedding outfits aren’t more common, it makes so much sense. I have enjoyed watching the rules around what weddings and couples are supposed to look like relax and allow for so much more creativity and beauty
Oh, this is just so f*cking cute!!!!!!!!!!!!
These are all such joy filled photos of beautiful people. The fuschia is just breathtaking. Creativity with weddings (in every form) just brings me such delight.
Can yall do another NYC city hall marriage post where you take pictures of people there one day?? I just feel like we need this type of energy right now lol like collectively as a society
Yes please !!!
wait I love this idea!!
yes!!!! LOVE this idea. here’s the first one we did: https://cupofjo.com/2019/12/17/city-hall-weddings-nyc/
I recently listened to an episode of Desert Island Discs (classic BBC radio programme) and the interviewee – an amazing woman, emergency planner Lucy Easthope – told her story of getting married at City Hall, NYC. Her and her husband are huge Ferris Bueller fans, and Alan Ruck was there, getting married either before or after them! Apparently it’s a tradition that whoever is either before or after you signs as a witness, so they have Alan Ruck on their marriage certificate! Such a cute story, thanks for making me remember it.
