Have a Delicious Weekend.

cookies

What are you up to this weekend? Tomorrow we are going to the No Kings protest (you too?), and I’m really excited to chat with some Cup of Jo readers at breakfast on Sunday! Hope you have a good one, and here are a few links from around the web…

The one hair product I use every morning.

Keanu Reeves’s new movie Good Fortune looks fun.

How beautiful are Irving Penn’s flower photographs?

What a chic fall skirt.

Artist Pauline Caulfield’s London home tour. I never thought a plaid sofa could look so cool.

How to make a non-alcoholic Negroni. (NYTimes gift link)

What your favorite author says about you behind your back. Agatha Christie: “I bet I could murder them and get away with it.”

Who’s hungry for spinach and ricotta gnudi?

Real photos that look fake. Hard to wrap your mind around!

The power of Diane Keaton’s emotional transparency. (NYTimes gift link)

Nostalgia!

And on Big Salad, 10 friends and readers share their fall uniforms. I loved Stella Blackmon’s chic way of belting a coat.

Plus, two reader comments:

Says Kay on Freddie and I have a movie-watching strategy: “Every night I do fairy fingers (does anyone else call it that?) on my 11-year-old daughter’s back as she falls asleep. She often asks me to tell her a story. But by that time of night, my brain is fried and I can’t come up with a whole plot with characters, so I’ve started telling her movie summaries. It’s actually so fun. It feels like I’m doing a podcast where I’m retelling a movie from my own point of view. “There’s this girl, Elle Woods…” She really loves it.”

Says Colleen Clark on angel food cake is the answer: “While we’re on the subject of throwback desserts: dirt cakes! Chocolate pudding mixed with crushed Oreos and Cool Whip [and gummy worms!]. Pure childhood joy that I’m sure would hold up today.”

We brought my 6yo to a No Kings protest in our purply suburb in Northern California. He’s been to a couple protests before; usually small rallies around very specific issues like supporting public education (where he held a sign that said “I love my school” :) ) For No Kings, we asked him if he wanted to come, and before we could even finish, he got all excited about the sign he wanted to make. Our little suburb protest ended up being 3,500 ppl (3.5x bigger than Hands Off in April). There was a band of teens playing music, people in costumes, folks singing. He passed out mini flags and hung out with other kids there. It felt like a party for democracy, for our community. It felt amazing.

Sasha in Montana

A party for democracy. That’s so hopeful.

AMK

In reading the comments about the current state of affairs, I’d love to see you feature the full political spectrum of your readers. Words like “liberal” “woke” “conservative” “nationalist” have become such hot words that remove our humanity right away. I am deeply curious about the humanity and concerns of everyone without labels. If I had to guess, we have a lot more in common. And I see it all the time when it’s a time of crisis. All the helpers come out, from all walks of life and on all the political spectrums. People in this country are losing basic a$$ rights and the poor are getting poorer and the rich are getting richer. I don’t believe that Democrats or Republicans or Independents are going to save us. We are going to save us. And we also have to battle the aggressive system of misinformation that has stripped so many people of their humanity.

Emily

We can “both sides” this situation when one side isn’t literally ripping people out of their beds in the night to put them on airplanes and send them thousands of miles away without judicial hearings. Until then, the fight of the greater evil must take precedent.

Silly Lily

Thank you, AMK, I appreciate your wise and gentle comment.

Elizabeth

Hard agree with Emily’s response here. I’m tired of being gaslit into feeling like I have to tiptoe around the feelings of people who voted for this insanity – we are so far through the looking glass, people.

Lindsey

Oh, what a beautiful comment, AMK. Amen, sister! I truly believe it’s the people not willing to relax even sometimes, and realize that no matter what side you are on we are all in this together, who are spurring our country into war-like territory. I love this; “I don’t believe that Democrats or Republicans or Independents are going to save us. We are going to save us.”

rachel

I hear you, AMK, but I think we’re past that point. At this point, my republican friends and family have, for the most part, admitted that justice and peace are unraveling. And the ones who can’t admit it seem so far past the point of reasonable discourse. I have a coworker who I generally like and enjoy working with, but he has Fox news constantly running in his office, and today he walked up to me and tried to goad me into talking about the protests. Said he had great jokes he wanted to share. Shut that down immediately. I’ve asked before how his life has improved in the last 10 months and he has no answer other than he’s glad that we aren’t funding welfare like we were and he wants all “the illegals and their diseases removed”. Someone like that isn’t open to a conversation without labels. I have genuinely tried. Over and over again. I used to consider myself conservative 20 years ago. Now we’re past fiscal policy. We’re talking about decency, justice, rule of law. DEMOCRACY is on the line and if you don’t see that… I have nothing else to say. I wish I could feel hope from your comment, but it only adds to the despair for me.

AMK

Hi Emily and Elizabeth, thank you for standing up for what is all so horrifying, inhumane and so f*cking cruel. I am a first generation Mexican American who lives in Northern California and I really appreciate your allyship. My comment was also to address how nuanced our political spectrum is. It’s common to meet people here in the Bay Area who are “fiscally conservative and socially liberal.” But what does that really mean? Our political spectrum is wide, varied and nuanced. There are a lot of hard core liberals here with “Namaste” bumper stickers who are also “not in my backyard” about certain issues. Did you know that California voted no to pay incarcerated inmates a higher wage (basically, continuing to support modern-day slavery..). I was flabbergasted. The most liberal people I know voted no because they have mixed feelings about paying incarcerated people more money when they got themselves in jail…but we all know this is a very nuanced, complicated and hella racist system. Bringing it back to our political spectrum…It’s possible to be a Bernie bro and be a police officer who is against the death penalty. It’s possible to be a DEI practitioner in academia and “brown” list your own colleague with whom you disagree and be pro-death penalty. I think diluting our political spectrum to “sides” makes it a slippery slope to dismissing the humanity of people and the multitudes we hold.

Sasha in Montana

Lindsey, what are we supposed to be more relaxed about? It’s interesting that you think it’s uptight overthinkers who are the problem here, when it’s literally the president illegally deploying troops to our cities to attack US citizens. But sure, my constant refrain of RELEASE THE EPSTEIN TRUMP FILES on social media probably will start a Civil War. Do y’all even believe the stuff you say to us?

Sasha in Montana

Emily, Elizabeth, (sorry, had a Clifford the Big Red Dog moment right there), There were 2 sides in the Revolutionary war, and the civil war, and WWI and II. And there are two now. And yes, then as now there were spineless immoral people who preached politeness above all else, comfort and let’s just bury our heads because they lack imagination and don’t know history, and of course those who were directly benefiting from the evil. A huge number of Americans supported Hitler, even after we entered WWII. There’s never any reason whatsoever to give them space or be gentle with them. As E said above, we are so far beyond that now. They’ve had nearly 10 years now to wake up.

Emily

I found a useful way to explain the protests this weekend to my 4 year old who was asking what the circles with lines through them means. We had just read Marlon Bundo, about a bunny who wants to marry another boy bunny but the Stinkbug tells them NO. All the animals realize that they don’t want the Stinkbug telling them what to do so they stand up to him. I explained that this was kind of like all of us saying we don’t want the Stinkbug making decisions for us. Seemed to work! https://bookshop.org/p/books/last-week-tonight-with-john-oliver-presents-a-day-in-the-life-of-marlon-bundo-chronicle-books/1040a96c2eb1d160?ean=9781452173801&next=t

Kat Rosa

This is similar to how we talk about it with my 6-year-old. We don’t talk about news or politics, but we talk about our values and our history. We talk about standing up to bullies and speaking out for the community. Looking out for others and holding people accountable for their behavior. He’s been to a handful of protests with us and he loves it. For No Kings, we discussed how societies throughout history have tried out having kings but it doesn’t work out well for one person to have all the power and all the money, so we do democracy where everyone gets to have a say. (obviously this is more aspirational than actual, but it feels appropriate for where he’s at at 6yo). At some point, maybe sooner than I think, we’ll have to discuss who Trump is, what he’s done to our country, what ICE is doing, etc. But for right now, he doesn’t seem to need that level of detail.

Mandy

Marlon Bundo – the bunny who wants to marry another boy bunny, Wesley. It’s a household favorite. Our 5 year old quoted it this weekend, while she made her sign. Momma, we are going to vote no Trump, like they voted no on the Stinky Bug. My heart.

kiki

For anyone looking for a “shortcut” NA negroni, I think I’m pretty late to the party, but recently discovered Sanbitter! Poured over a big ice cube with an orange wedge, and you get a pretty darn close dupe. Of course I’m sure it’s not as good as making it from scratch, but for a weeknight? It’s a pretty great cheat! https://www.amazon.com/Sanbitt%C3%A8r-Non-Alcoholic-Aperitif-10-10Cl/dp/B0000D15YQ

Lauren O

Pursuant to the “concerns” from “readers” that sprout here when protesting this monstrous administration comes up: I find a Troll Jar really handy at times like these. They want my/our time/attention, and instead of spending it on them, I drop a little donation in my jar for each one I see; as they add up I forward them on to mutual-aid funds. A few options: https://www.dcmigrantmutualaid.org/donate https://www.gofundme.com/f/chicago-street-vendor-relief-fund-protecting-vendors-suppo https://hcb.hackclub.com/donations/start/malan Thanks for contributing to the cause, “conservative” commenters!

Sasha in Montana

I love this so much Lauren, I’m adopting it immediately. I hope your race went well! (I think it was you, running a race this weekend?)

Lindsey

Just to follow up on the post from a few weeks ago about the new librarian who needed pants. I read every single comment to that post and I just got my first pair of Big Bud Press pants. I am loving them! Thank you to whoever suggested them! They are flattering and comfy and if you throw a blazer on with them, they are nice enough for my business casual office.

Betsy

Not able to join protests this weekend as we got the devastating news at our ultrasound that there was no heartbeat. Even with all the grief I feel, the tender, competent care I am getting by privilege of living in a state the protects all my medical choices has really put a fire under me to double down on advocacy for reproductive rights. Gonna sit out for a bit while I work through this then I’ll be back in the game.

Claire

My sympathies, and wishing you healing and wellness in all ways.

Meredith

I’m so sorry. I’m sending tons of love and support.

anon

I’m so sorry, Betsy. Thinking of you.

Leah

Hugs to you, Betsy. I’m so sorry.

Amrita

I’m so sorry for your loss, Betsy. Thinking of you.

Karen

Oh Betsy. Holding you close in my heart and with many hopes for healing, time to grieve and gentle care of yourself and yours. I am glad you had the support and care you needed in the moment and hope you have as much as you need, as you move forward. xx

Emma

Oh Betsy, I have been there. It’s awful, and I’ve felt the same way about medical care (I live in Canada). Give yourself time to grieve and recover. I’m sorry you’re going through this – sending hugs.

Sarah

Betsy: I’m so sorry. I’m sending you strength, kindness, and love. Truly a heartbreak. I’ve been there and also felt thankful to live in a state with access to necessary healthcare. Take the most care of yourself.

Caroline Rosengarden

Betsy, Sending you love and compassion. Take care of yourself.

AMK

Surrounding you and your partner with lots of healing love and light while you navigate the waves of this tremendous loss.

Sasha in Montana

Thinking of you Betsy. Gentle hugs. I’m crying for your immense loss today.

Elizabeth

This is heartbreaking; I’m so sorry.

Ella

I feel you Betsy. Every mom reading your comment is wrapping you up in love.

Karen

Hi Joanna, long-time reader and admirer. I just returned from an amazing week in Paris, and wonder if you have ever considered hosting travel groups? I would LOVE to travel more, but don’t always have a companion(s), and I would definitely consider a small travel group with other women. For Paris, my husband wasn’t up for it, so I went with my two daughters (ages 12 and 13) and also my sister and her three boys (kids). I’ve also traveled to Lisbon with two girlfriends (last spring) and that was amazing (eat/drink wine, walk, shop, repeat). I think with you having such a great reader base, and I believe you enjoy traveling, this could be a very fun thing for you and some of your readers. Just a thought, as I google other places to visit :)

Julie

After reading through the (fascinating!) money post comments, I thought others may find helpful a budget and bank account-balancing spreadsheet that a former boyfriend made for me. It honestly has saved my life, because for the longest time I had no idea where my money was going. Anyone can make a copy and then edit that; I added some notes I thought may be useful in some cells. I go in on the first day of each month and copy-and-paste all my usual expenses (auto-debits, subscriptions, etc.) so that I can see how much money I ACTUALLY have after my necessities are taken care of. That way I don’t get tricked into thinking I have more money than I actually do, just because many things haven’t come out of my bank account yet. Anyway, feel free to ignore, use, or adapt as you see fit! https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Q9IROw9B7L3d2vRHLd5SrInNcpMV4u3si9rDl_AULt8/edit?usp=sharing

Hillary R

How fantastic!

AMK

JULIE! THANK YOU!!! This is exactly what I’ve needed!!!

Dana

This spreadsheet is terrific! Thanks for sharing! I have been keeping a google doc budget for years that works fine but holy wow this is next level better!!!

Sophie

attended No Kings in Wichita, KS and it was crowded and loud and joyful and strong! Felt so good to be there.

Claire

Kansas is a cool state.

Rae

I helped lead an hour of line-dancing to finish up our VERY well attended No Kings rally. It was a blast . So fun to see all ages out there doing the electric slide and the wobble toghether!

Britt

Yesterday (Saturday) my DH and I were on a super long road trip – think up and on the road by 4:00am. By 1:00pm were were weary and buzzy from hours of driving, with many more still to come when we passed through the tiny town of Moro, Oregon. And I mean tiny – I just looked it up, and the population is 324. And bless their hearts, there was a small group of citizens on the old main street waving “No Kings” posters and banners. My heart grew like the Grinch on Christmas morning. I had completely forgotten about the protest in the wake of life (sick friend maybe last chance to see them, etc.), and yet the good people of America, all across the land are out there being the best of us, showing up for democracy, for dignity, for each other. In that road-weary moment my hope rekindled, not from headlines or speeches, but from a handful of neighbors standing tall in a town of 324.

Mollie

Thank you for sharing this beautiful story ❤️.

Sarah P.

Yes, thank you for sharing – your post made me tear up! <3 Yes to hope and Americans standing up for democracy & one another! Wishing your friend good health <3 <3 <3

Christina

GBK, I’m not a monarchist at all but come from the UK, a country with a literal king. Not only can I protest peacefully, I do so without fear of being shot, either from a civilian with an assault weapon, or the military having been unnecessarily deployed to my city. To suggest that a protest on the scale of yesterday’s rallies in the US would not be possible in countries with monarchies is breathtakingly naive. Peace.

Claire

good points. However, speaking for myself and my family and friends, we are not breathtakingly naive. As we are speaking of terminology, that seems a little melodramatic. From another country it is probably easy to underestimate just how distressed and alarmed most of us are, and how bad things have gotten in the US. Any protest and pushback, no matter the handle, is important. But regarding the terminology you are questioning, I do agree it could be more precise to label the protests No Fascists, or No Tyrants. But at the end of the day, people got out there and stood up for the principles that are important to them, and that matters most.

Jamie

I think her point was that the type of “king” the protests allege the president to aspire to be would quash such protests. The claims are that he is autocratic, tyrannical, “facist.” The language all around is sloppy.

Olma

Do you need a reminder Christiana that we have watched the police arrest old people in wheelchairs for opposing genocide every weekend this summer in the UK? Not to mention that it is the country with the most arrests for social media posts. So yes protests are allowed in countries with monarchies but don’t imagine for a second that what is currently happening in the UK is democracy. Peace.

Maureen

Our tax money was used to bail out Prince Andrew though

Cg

Whoops I think you guys are all on the same team and this is all a big misunderstanding! I believe Christina was disagreeing with GBK’s comment below about how the fact that we’re allowed to protest means that we don’t have a king/fascist in power, so things couldn’t possibly be bad. Christina was just saying that it’s silly/ignorant to say that protest isn’t allowed in any country with a king

Jan

https://foodess.com/toblerone-cookies/#wprm-recipe-container-11045 I think this is the recipe for those cookies in the header

Erin Z

While that recipe looks verrrry delicious, the one in the picture up there is the salted chocolate chip cookie recipe on http://www.foodess.com :)

Helga

Toblerone cookies? I know what I’m making this weekend.

Kara

I make my husband dirt cake every year for his birthday, and now my oldest asks for it for his birthday too. It’s the best! No Kings in Sunnyvale, California was full of joyful Americans demonstrating what kind of country we want to live in. It was so hopeful!

Mandy

Just getting to this on Saturday. We took our daughter (5) to our local No King’s Protest. She is becoming a pro. We live in Dayton, OH and there were at least 5,000 people gathered together protesting peacefully. There was a drum circle and lots of activist Grandmothers. I love it.

Silly Lily

Just ordered the POP phone handset for my husband’s 72nd birthday…….ironically his Grandpa name is POP. I wonder if he will remember how to use a handset — it’s been years. And my grandchildren will be amazed (and possibly frightened) by the sight of it…..I’m quite sure they have never even seen one. But I’m betting they might all want one for Christmas. Can’t wait to see….

Kelley

Calling those who disagree or oppose your opinions ****ing, is truly wrong. Yes, it happens on both sides. Wrong either way. And Joanne, while our politics do not align, letting such language through on your blog is questionable. I do really enjoy your blog. As Michael Jordan said, “Conservatives buy shoes as well”. I hope you don’t continue to alienate conservatives. We DO but product as well.

Cookie

Her name is Joanna, Kelley.

Sara B

I can’t figure out what this is referencing. Is it another comment? I’ve been looking but I haven’t seen anything.

Mel

This is not about conservative/liberal, but about atrocities and removal of democratic/constitutional rights. Or does being republican/consetvative now mean cruelty, murder, and anti-democracy? Do you agree with these things? Just because you think that’s not what’s happening, doesn’t mean it *isn’t* happening. Unless you have radically changed your definitions of democracy and morality.

Lindsay

What you’re asking for is to be treated with kid gloves for supporting an actual Nazi regime. People supporting this administration deserve to be called out for it and Joanna has zero responsibility to cater to it. I think she does a remarkable job. If you are uncomfortable with the content on this site find another one.

Sasha in Montana

Donating to a progressive anti trump cause instead of responding! Thanks Lauren O.

Mollie

What did she call you? a king?

PNW GRATEFUL

At least we aren’t doing what your king did in response to the protests which was to share a video of himself in a plane wearing a crown, dispensing brown liquid on protesters. Really nice gesture for a “president ” to the roughly 70% of the people who disagree with him. He’s still supposed to care about everyone. Just disgraceful. Also he said he commuted the sentence of Santos because he had the intelligence to “always vote Republican”. Hope you’re calling out that stuff, Kelley.

Kim

She didn’t call anyone, anything? Her name is Joanna.

Kay from Queens

Hi Kelley, did you also clutch your pearls when Trump said he can grab women by the puss? Does pussy also bother you or just ducking? Did you gasp in faux horror when the Young Republicans texts leaked out strewn with “fa**ot, “ni**a, talking about gas chambers regarding Jews, or even when JD Vance dismissed the texts young boys talk, even though they’re in their 30s. Maybe you should go feign outrage over those comments instead of a random “fucking” in a comment thread.

Claire

You’re an adult. Work it out, Kelley. .

Josephine

I’m normally pretty good looking at both sides of an issue but nope, not here. I refuse to consider the side that is ok with what this admin is doing. It’s like saying, “let’s hear Hitler out, maybe he has some good ideas.”.

Charlotte

Happy to see hundreds of protesters out today at the No Kings protest in my tiny hometown! Feels heartening!

Katie

So as a child of the 90s, I am loving the nostalgia of “Good Fortune”… like, “Michael” + “City of Angels” meets some of our 2000s and 2010s comedies?

laura

Angela

Love the movie plot bedtime stories <3

Libbynan

Next to the Catherine Newman home tour this one is my favorite. I can’t believe people aren’t raving over it. Just like Catherine’s, it is totally personal and utterly unique. You KNOW this woman from seeing her living space.

Anne

I’m injured and can’t protest today, but I am spending that time reaching out to my son’s friends away at university to make sure they have their plan to vote absentee in the crucial upcoming election. For what it’s worth, I hear a lot about young men becoming increasingly hate filled, but I am delighted to say that it’s not my anecdotal experience.

mado

Thanks for sharing this – it’s pretty terrifying as a mom of a 10 year old boy. I love hearing about the great young men out there.

Sarah

In addition to protesting, I’ll be watching the new season of The Diplomat, admiring the badass government leaders (Kerri Russell <3) in that show. So good. Highly recommend it if you haven't seen it yet!

rachel

Binged this weekend! So good

Monique

Plaid sofas!! Always make me think of this amazing home tour from Domino a few years ago. I’m obsessed. https://www.domino.com/design-inspiration/studio-wu-storybook-cottage-marin/

oooh, that’s a lovely home

I’m actually doorbelling for a school board candidate who will help save democracy and fight tyranny! Excited!

Good for you!

This photo reminds me of a delicious chocolate chip cookie recipe – do yourself a favour this weekend and watch Claire Saffitz – aka Dessert Person – make the best and most thoughtful chocolate chip cookies recipe there is on her YouTube channel (and then make them of course!). I love how she explains why each step is important… I finally heeded the instruction to let the cookies chill for 24 hrs. YUM.

Karen

Long-time home/hobby baker here (30 years!) and YES to letting cookie dough chill in the fridge for 24 hours before baking, it’s a game changer. I also found an amazing choc chip cookie recipe that uses sourdough starter, and this 24 hour chill period really minimizes that sourdough tang. (You know, because you don’t necessarily want your co-worker asking if there’s parmesan cheese in your chocolate chip cookies LOL.) https://simplicityandastarter.com/the-best-chewy-sourdough-chocolate-chip-cookies/

Sasha in Montana

The chilling cookie dough really does make a difference. Almost all cookie recipes are improved by a chill.

Ellen

Omg I literally just made these and they’re chilling in the fridge! Can’t wait.

Sar

Yes! I would trust any of Claire’s recipes – her YouTube show is incredibly informative and extremely cozy.

I missed the original comment but 100% on the dirt cake!! My grandmom called it Dirt & Worms and she made it in a (new and washed) plastic bucket and served it with a (new and washed) plastic hand shovel! I have yet to make it for my kids, this is the year!!

Passive Girl Scout dessert. Made it with my dsughtr: troop and I’m 50

Will be at No Kings in DC with my five year olds! We have been under occupation by the guard for two months now for no reason – wasting all of our tax dollars. All while ICE separates families in my neighborhood and the GOP continues to strip the limited rights that DC residents have. Just ENOUGH.

Agnès

Getting together in political protest will give you all so much energy… will be thinking of you from Paris. Love

What an insightful and encouraging comment, Thank You! (I know Parisians know all about how to strike, thank you – as a city – for modeling this in the world!)

I’m an American visiting my American friend (now duel citizen) in Toronto, and we’re heading to the rally here! So you can still maybe join where you are.

Lana

It’s a good thing we don’t have have a king in America otherwise you wouldn’t have this wonderful ability to freely object. I’m glad POTUS is in office, and I’m glad ya’ll on the other side of the aisle can spend your weekends protesting.

Joanna Goddard

Have you heard about the military being sent to US cities? This comment feels so very out of touch to me.

Janz

“…wonderful ability to freely object” doesn’t feel that way lately.

jen

whoa. thought this was a joke. fyi your boy doesnt like the protests and has sent stormtroopers to cities to shut them down. glad you dont live here. one less trumplicker..

Claire

Your “POTUS” thinks of himself as a king so maybe next time, spend the time you took thinking about and writing this comment to instead read the news and reflect on what is actually happening in the US right now.

Elizabeth

Lana, the current president has made direct statements (https://www.c-span.org/clip/white-house-event/president-trump-quips-about-canceling-2028-elections-if-us-is-at-war/5170008) about his desire to remain in office past two terms and is actively pushing for legislative changes that would upend our access to democratic voting as we know it. I am not here to argue your right to be happy he’s in office, but the threats he and his ilk pose to American democracy are undeniable. It’s the right of those who don’t want those threats to come true to protest against them.

Kelley

Completely agree with you Lana! There would be no protests if we did have a king. How very ironic. But I am very happy you all are able to protest. Proves we do not have a king.

GBK

“The military being sent to US cities”?! The National Guard is often sent to cities in times of crisis. I’d say the out of control crime in cities such as DC and Chicago are crises. And Lana is right- in a country with actual “Kings” aka Russia/Putin, these protests couldn’t happen. It’s a testament to our strong country that we can do this. You gotta get outta Brooklyn once in awhile Jo and talk to the 50% of America that feels differently than you do. There’s nothing out of touch with what Lana said. I’d say you and your peers are out of touch with much of America.

Eva

For now I will assume you value free speech as much as I do – please read up on what happening: https://www.cnn.com/2025/10/14/politics/trump-first-amendment-fox-news-analysis

This comment reminds me that waaaaay back in the early 90s, my husband (then bf) used to listen to Rush Limbaugh on talk radio sometimes. It was confusing to me because he said he was a feminist, a progressive, he’d voted for Bill Clinton…. so I asked. “I dunno,” sheepishly. “I just like to feel angry sometimes. No one makes me angry like he does and sometimes I just like it. ” Oof. It was a long journey for him to come to terms with his feelings, esp his anger. But because he cares about me, and our eventual children, he did the work. He doesn’t choose rage over anything else anymore and he no longer enjoys it. Have you examined why you spend so much time here at COJ Lana?

Mary

I think it’s interesting that the protests are called “No Kings” when the website states: “This isn’t just politics. It’s democracy versus dictatorship.” Should not it be called “No Dictators”? Let’s keep in memory that no one voted for Kamala Harris to be the Democratic Party presidential candidate. Had she been elected that would have been much more against democracy than the perceived kingly (or dictator) actions of Trump.

Liz

GBK I live in DC and crime is NOT out of control here. And Mary I don’t even know what to do with your comment. Nearly half the votes went to Kamala – people VOTED for her. The primary process is kind of a joke anyway – people in like three states get to vote and by the time it’s gets to most of us the nominees been decided anyway. Just wow, what uninformed, dense takes on this tread.

Cynthia

Stats for Chicago 2025 year to date: 362 homicides. 12 of those killed were between the ages of 0-12. 22 of those killed were between the ages of 13-17. Shot and wounded but not killed 1320. I’m an IL resident and this has been going on for years. The mayor of Chicago and the governor are totally ineffectual. Who will save the children? Can we march for the children?

julie

Solidarity, Jo! Marching with you across the river in Manhattan. Thank you for setting this beautiful example. We need to look out for each other when you-know-who decides that NYC also suffers from “out of control crime” (despite, you know, facts)!

Kay

The out of control crime in DC? When they were on track for lower rates of crime this year compared to similar periods in previous years? And if the National Guard is required, one would think they might be sent to Birmingham, AL given they have just under 59 acts of murder and non-negligent homicide per 100,000 people which is the highest rate for cities in the US. Sigh. He also said Portland is on fire and there are riots and blah blah blah. So profoundly untrue. Those inflatable costumes wouldn’t hold up against such intense heat. He is consolidating power and has been taking actions that Presidents aren’t to take, including the canceling of funds that were appropriated by Congress—they have the power of the purse. His administration is being blatantly partisan on official government websites which should remain neutral. You’re happy about the cuts to Medicaid that will devastate rural healthcare and decrease access to services particularly for seniors as the population of rural areas tends to be older with fewer transportation options? You’re happy about the cuts to funding critical cancer research including the gutting of clinical trials for cancer treatment—people who participate in those trials are people who have basically run out of options and those trials are often their last chance at treatment. And you’re happy about that? You’re happy about the tariffs that are harming farmers and decreasing our food security? And the tariffs are also harming consumers in the US because there are things we do not make here that we need from overseas? And the tariffs really harm small businesses in the US since they get so many raw materials from other countries. You’re happy that the US just gave $40B to Argentina when we were told that spending was out of control and that’s why there are so many cuts but somehow we can cut taxes on the wealthy and send a bailout? Cool.

Katums

“There would be no protests if we did have a king. How very ironic.” You do know you can protest in countries with kings… that historically people have found way to challenge dictators and kings even while living in under an authoritative regime as people in the US are currently living under … y’all are so fucking stupid.

Lora

You realize your comment is connected to the fact that we *historically* have not had a king, right? And that if POTUS got his wish, he would be allowed to shoot all protestors and thereby hopefully end all protest? Like, he actually had to have the Pentagon explain why he can’t just shoot everyone?

Libby

Bless your heart.

PNW GRATEFUL

Have you not heard Pam Bondi say over and over again ” No one is above the law ” while we have a convicted felon in the white house ? And they let the Jan 6 insurrectionists go free? Pam Bondi said “we will always have the deepest regards for law enforcement ” when talking about the tragic murder of police in York PA but they pardon the J6 people who assaulted police that day ? This admin makes absolutely no sense. These people are nauseating. “Hypocrite” does not begin to describe these people. My heart is pounding just thinking about this entire administration. And NO, 50 % of the country is not on his (or your) side.Check your stats. A few commenters here stated No Kings is out of touch. If people are ” in touch” with Trump’s ideology, I pity them, truly.

Rachel

I’ll take the bait. The president and republicans in power are doing everything they can to disrupt democracy and we have to fight back any way we can. Just because you’re on their good side now doesn’t mean you always will be!

Aubrey Demajh

@Joanna Goddard very honest question: do you welcome conservative women as readers? Don’t want to read if the author would truly not wish for me to be here, cause that’s the opposite feeling that has always brought me to your page in a spare moment of the day. thought I would just ask. I am a conservative long time reader who has cheered for you, commented over the years, and lived for your global moms around the world articles a few years back (I still look them up and reread them!). I’m conservative and I think we’d laugh together if we ever met. I think you’d find me a decent person, an authentically enthusiastic messy mother, a really bad group text keeper upper unless its the one week of the month that I’m extroverted, I’d love to hear about the boy mom life and share with you different kind of LOUD that is girl mom life (it’s v high pitched). I just think we would very easily find each other earnest people. And I’m conservative. Do you welcome me as a reader?

Joanna Goddard

I welcome conservative readers, of course, and I hope that by reading essays and stories and comments by people with so many different points of view, readers will see how we should always lead with empathy and curiosity; everyone is worthy of respect, love, and support; we should come together to ensure that people have access to safety, public education, healthcare, and affordable housing; LGBTQ+ folks belong everywhere; and so on. I hope that makes sense!

Jen

Even after all these years, I can’t get over how many women will jump into blog comments to defend lies from the mouth of a convicted sex pest. If there is something about Trump that appeals to you, something inside of you is really and truly broken. I’d have more pity if I wasn’t full of rage. Reminder to the sane among us: social isolation works! Lana isn’t invited to book club until she reads a normal newspaper and stops defending fascists!

MaBi

I’m carrying my American passport everywhere I go. An immigrant having to carrying a passport in case that a BAD encounter with ICE happens, is a violation of civil rights — it’s racial profiling based on appearance. I am a US citizen, and I should not fear deportation, but we have to carry our passport anyways. Do you know what ICE is doing to people like me ( with the “wrong” color) in Elgin, IL and Chicago, Lana? No, you don’t! I’m will be attending the No King protest tomorrow in Geneva, IL — far west suburbs of Chicago.

Lala

People are showing up to protest so MANY things the orange idiot is doing. Lana, if you were paying attention you’d know his dream is to be king. Maybe “ya’ll” who support a pu**y grabber can learn to read the room and also read the real news.

Anna

Wow. Lana, you do realize that he WANTS to be king, right? He babbles about it literally all the time. This is what we are protesting. GBK, before you so condescendingly tell Joanna to “get out of Brooklyn” maybe you should think about the bubble you may be living in? I live in rural PA and people here are not happy with what this regime is doing. Saying 50% of people agree with it is false. Educate yourself. I have family in DC, Chicago, and Portland, and crime is absolutely not “out of control” there. In fact, the cities with the highest crime rates are all in republican controlled states. Why isn’t the national guard being sent there I wonder??? I’m also curious about why you’re so happy the orange one is potus? The illegal tariffs ruining our economy? The gutting of cancer research and funding? The promotion of conspiracy theories as healthcare? The snatching of brown people off the streets with no due process? The protection of pedophiles? Do tell.

Julie

Here’s a great explanation – from Fox News, a source the original commenter likely trusts – about why people are protesting. Hope this helps those who want to dismiss the importance of this day with “if Trump were a king, you couldn’t protest.” https://www.instagram.com/reels/DP7txLFjN-2/

Rachel

Everyone has already done a great job at stating the obvious reasons this comment is mind boggling to all of us. But I appreciate the person who asked you to consider why you come to this site so often, assuming you must feel a camaraderie with us. And knowing that most of us have wildly different perspectives than you. Interestingly, I surely don’t have that feeling when I encounter lifestyle/women-centric content from conservative writers. Consider the exclusionary attitude of people who agree with the politically and the stark contrast to the accepting and inclusive content here (and I’m not referring to posts/ comments concerning politics. Just the variety of diverse voices represented). You simply don’t see that in conservative media. I live in the Deep South and witness this in real life on a daily basis. I teach art at a school that is predominantly Hispanic. During a recent unit on art as social social commentary, a student made a digital collage of photos of ICE protests and screen printed the words “deportation won’t diminish us”. My coworker who handles the large format printing is a die hard republican who has Fox News running in his office at all times. He and I are buddies but he knows not to engage with me on politics. Well, when he brought me her collage that he’d printed, he says to me “Hey, you really believe this?!” In front of my class full of kids living in active fear that they or their families might be snatched from the streets (even my documented and American-born kids live with this fear). I immediately told him to shut it down and get out of my room, and literally had to push him out as he tried to interrogate my kids about whether they thought illegal immigrants should be able to be here when they haven’t had health screenings. The fear and anger on my kids faces when they realized they can’t even feel at ease at school was something I’ll never forget. I implore you to start spending time with people outside of your regular social circle. Make yourself proximate to those who feel unsafe in these times. LEAD WITH EMPATHY. Ask yourself, and really consider if yours and your neighbors lives have improved since Trump came back to office. And in case you’re a Trump supporter who also considers yourself a Christian, please make one connection to what you see unfolding around us in what we’re taught by Jesus and the apostles. The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, and self-control. Don’t miss the scripture preceding that one sums up the acts of sinful nature “…hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions..” Tell me which of these your president embodies. And don’t forget what we read about what love means in 1 Corinthians “love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude. It is not self-seeking. It is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, it always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”

Claire

Protesting with my family in West Virginia today. GBK, who told Jo to “get out of Brooklyn,” I invite you to West Virginia to see how much trump and his racist, sexist, anti-democratic policies are despised all over this country.

Rachel

One like point of fact checking: you can live in a country with a king and still protest https://www.pbs.org/newshour/amp/politics/trumps-second-state-visit-to-the-uk-meets-with-protests-and-arrests-by-brian-melley-associated-press

Claire

Reminder that the popularity and high-profile comment section on this site can mean that comments from organized disinformation campaigns or bots will show up, and that the goal of those comments is not only to spread lies but to create conflict, agitation, and anger. This comment is so ill-conceived and disconnected from reality that I doubt it’s validity and question the intent. Pay it no mind.

Joy

Lana, You need to educate yourself on what is happening in this country under Trump and his administration. If you did, I’m sure you’d be embarrassed to still support him as a “ leader” of this country.

carson

Should he get as far as actual king – it will be imperative that people protest twice as much and throw him out. Kings can and have been overthrown. You don’t just lay down and accept that kind of thing in the USA.

Josephine

I don’t know what reality people are experiencing to be GLAD that Trump is in power. The atrocities that this administration has pulled off in plain sight is staggering. To not be able to see that? Woof.

Denise

Lana, et al who voted for this or are feeling a bit gleeful that the rest of us are fighting for democracy: why are you even on this site? Jo stands for inclusion, kindness and empathy. You are exhibiting anything but by supporting the current administration.

jane

GBK, please. If you do a simple google search, DC, Chicago and Portland aren’t even in the top 10 cities with a high crime rate. And that’s from multiple sites. The National Guard and ICE are making them unsafe though. What happened to a primarily Black condo building in a pretty good neighborhood is abhorrent. Storming it in the middle of the night. Waking kids and pulling them into the street. Trashing the place. It’s abhorrent. Why don’t you speak out about that violence? The tear gas dropped on peaceful protesters? Is that cool too? Or is all if this acceptable because they’re targeting Brown and Black people?

Victoria

No to a POTUS that is actively trying to squash these protests and freedom to freely object by sending National Guard to Portland. No to ordering the deportations and murders of people without fair trial. No to trying to divide people and actively sowing discontent with false statements to make them fear those that are different from them. No to using this to distract us from the rich and powerful that are taking away our Medicaid, science research, food security, farmer support, and infrastructure projects to grow their own wealth and power. No kings!

Actually from Chicago

Cynthia, I’ll take your comment to mean that you are highly involved in gun control efforts at both state and national levels, as well as fully committed to investing money and resources into the south and west sides of Chicago. Look at how hard you’re working to save those children! Maybe share some of the organizations you work with with us, so that we can help make Chicago safer for the children, too? This is, of course, assuming you are an actual person. Bot or not, I hope your pearls are ok after all the clutching.

Annie

Good luck with that, Lana. And also with finally pulling your head out of your arse.

Nithya

We in Australia do have a king (for now) and still have far more freedoms that the US does, including to protest without fear of retribution. We also have a saying in Australia that the standard you walk past is the standard you accept, and we would never accept other Australians being treated in the disgraceful way that the US Government is treating its citizens, irrespective of their political beliefs. Perhaps while the actual patriots in your country are protesting for the rights that the US holds dear, you might choose to examine if you truly live in the land of the free in the current political climate.

Susan

Lana, I’m with you.

Jen

I understand that not everyone has the ability to go to college or take history courses that teach American and world history. Or maybe they take them and don’t pay attention…but this has been strait out of the authoritarian notebook. Look it up. Read. Hell, even Rick Steves has a show dedicated to the rise of Hitler if someone doesn’t read books. He explains it and goes to concentration camps and historically significant places in Germany and Poland. As they say, ignorance is bliss. This surely holds true in these times.

Jen

I’ll add that is the support for these protests are any indication…2026 elections(if we have them fairly) will flip congress. In our little town, we had massive support from all the locals and tourists that drove past. I’d say 85%. Young, old, men in big trucks. Delivery guys- even the fire and rescue team. It was really interesting. And I’m in the mountains of Colorado. Not Brooklyn (but my son attends college in nyc- yay!)

Stacey S

There are very limited reasons why the US military can be sent to states. Peaceful protest is not one of them–but that’s what is happening. Many of our laws are based on the “good faith” of the people triggering them. We are losing that–so be very very careful of rejoicing right now, Lana. The shoe will be on the other foot soon enough. Our laws are not designed to punish political opponents–but that is what they are being used for now. When they are used against you in the future–you will wonder why everyone looked the other way. Try the 99% Invisible Podcast–Breakdown of the Constitution. My guess is that most people have no idea how little enforcement there is within the constitution itself. It’s all based on good actors–acting in good faith. If the only thing you can recite is “we the people,” read more.

Alex

No one tell Lana & co about the AI-slop video her president just posted about him dropping excrement on protestors. It might negatively impact their narrative that everything is a-ok.

Emma

Lana. Your president posted an AI video o himself in a crown dumping literal shit all over protesters. You’re glad this is your president? How embarrassing for you. Why are you even on this site? It’s the opposite of everything you, Republicans and the president stand for.

Sarah, too

Lana, Kelley, GBK, etc.: I invite you to watch JD Vance’s BlueSky post from last night. He posted an AI fever dream of Trump as king, with Democrats bowing in response to him. This imagery is completely antithetical to the ideals of the founding of this country. Release your need to stick with your political tribe for one moment to genuinely consider what America was (imperfectly) founded to be, versus the current trajectory we are on.

Karen

Lana, babe–this ain’t it. I am assuming you are a troll, to be coming in here and saying that–maybe go back to your bridge and leave the work of fighting fascism with critical thinking and kindness and community to us adults. xoxoxo

Plague Of The United States

Yes, Joanna and all the readers should talk to the 50% of “America” who “feels” differently. I bet the people of those parts of ‘America” were not raided, assaulted, deported and murdered by ICE. Maybe they support systemic ethnic cleansing in Gaza, Lebanon, Yemen, Qatar? Maybe their relatives received the 31 BILLION dollars that we sent to Israel while having to figure out how to live without turning on the AC or heater? Maybe they didn’t have to rethink their visit to the local Planned Parenthood? And perhaps they approve of pedophilia and adore the photo of P/FOTUS+ EPSTEIN? +1 Jo and the NKD readers.

Kim

Are you also glad that billions of our tax dollars are going to Israel, and other countries instead of staying here at home? That’s he’s killing people indiscriminately in the Caribbean? Kidnapping brown skinned children an and families? At least when we protest, we don’t storm the capital, with gallows made for Mike Pence and kill police officers. Shame on you.

anon

Hi, I am an anti-monarchy Canadian but fun fact Canada has a king (of England! gah/better than American dictator ruling us? do I have to choose??/so scared the US will invade us–) and we protest all the dilly long day. And while we are not a perfect country, we do have healthcare and maternity leave and inexpensive daycares and affordable universities… Many European countries have monarchies and also all these nice things. BECAUSE WE PROTEST. (And we have Parliamentary systems.) We fight for better lives for the many, not the few, as the UK Labour Party slogan goes. We all have to keep fighting. We are even fighting for you, conservative buddies. Because you and your families and children and friends and neighbours also all deserve better. (It’s in Fascist countries that people can’t protest.) Per CS Lewis: Courage, dear hearts–

Liz

You weren’t kidding about that Roz cream. I’ve had chronically frizzy hair since I started dying it, and this stuff really saved my bob. It’s finally tamed but not weighed down, which was all I ever wanted. I use it with the Roz shampoo, a different brand’s conditioner (Rahua), and add a little Shu Uemura Essence Absolue oil for some extra shine. It’s perfect, and it smells so lovely.

carson

I got it too, after that rec, and my hair finally looks normal, lol. One less irritant in my day, yay!

Heidi

You go ladies! I’ll be with you in heart and spirit from across the Atlantic ocean as you take to the streets on cities across the US. xxxxx

Kim

I just want to say, thank you, all of you who are able to protest tomorrow! I have a disabling medical condition in which I cannot participate in person anymore. I’m cheering you on and sharing all my favorite signs!!

Kim

Somehow when my babies were babies, I started this ritual of singing “silent night,” to them while slowly tracing my fingers down their face. They still ask for that sometimes at 10&12.

jen

love this. that song always makes me tear up.

Sarah

Headed to the No Kings protest at Ocean Beach in SF with my 5 and 7 year olds! We’ll bring dump trucks and signs—turns out it’s a perfect location and style of event for my neurodivergent kids since we can hang out in one place and they can play at my feet while still being present. It’s typically mostly elders and usually pretty quiet noise wise.

Amber

I love the Ouai products! They live up to their hype. Try the wave spray or the anti frizz crème, love them both $25-$30.

Kristina

I have a 5 and 7 year old who are both neurodivergent too. Their dad went to our local event and we got a window seat at a restaurant nearby. They did the crafts I brought and ate French fries, while we talked about the different people, what their signs meant, and why people were protesting. It was just the right spot for us to be. It makes me really happy to think of your family in OB, playing in the sand and still being present.

Elizabeth

Thank you for highlighting (and participating in) the No Kings protests! I’m not currently able to protest in person, but I frequently Venmo friends who are protesting $5-10 to help cover the costs of their transportation, posters, etc. It’s what I would have spent on the same things if I went in person and I want to support those protesting <3

This is so lovely. What a wonderful way to make a difference. xx

This is such a great practice Elizabeth. Thank you!

Does anyone have hair product recommendation that is a little lighter on the budget? Sometimes I’m embarrassed that I will never ever be in a position to spend $ like that on a product, but am finally realizing I can’t be the only one? Wavy hair- prone to dryness- I just air dry and go Thanks!!

Emilie

John Frieda air dry waves styling foam! It’s a $12 product that works great on my fine curly/wavy hair. I have no patience for blow drying most days and this gives me volume and definition without weighing my hair down. Drugstore buys for the win!

Kim

Tiny bit of conditioner and water. A lot of people make it in a spray. But I find I spray it in my hands and then apply.

Carly

I think you’re in the norm Sara Beth! I have found success with Reddit in my curly hair journey. This post may help you? https://www.reddit.com/r/Wavyhair/comments/1mnd2uh/best_air_dry_product/

Gretchen

I have been using badger hair pomade after I let my hair dry. While it’s wet I twirl my waves in a few sections to get them into a shape. Then Just a dab rubbed in between my palms to help soothe my dry ends. It’s like $16 and will take a long time to use up.

N.D.

I am also not willing to spend that much money! I have tried a bunch of products and really like this one. I have curly/wavy long hair and it makes great waves. It is basically a leave-in conditioner/curl cream: https://www.lorealparisusa.com/hair-care-hair-style/hair-treatments/elvive-dream-lengths-curls-dreamy-curls-cream-paraben-free It costs $7-8 and is available at most drugstores and Target.

Ollie

This is my go-to product for air drying my frizzy/wavy hair. It’s still not super cheap but lasts a long time and is the only hair product I use besides shampoo and conditioner. https://www.bumbleandbumble.com/product/19057/48695/style/cremes/dont-blow-it-thick-air-dry-cream

Kathleen

I have wavy/curly hair and love Tigi Curls Rock. I put it on after I comb in whatever leave in conditioner is on sale and scrunch upside down!

Anna

Hi Sara Beth! I have used Bumble and Bumble products for years, and through long, short, colored and now naturally gray. I have dry but curly hair and can attest to their Hairdressers Invisible Oil line of products. Not for every day but while they seem $$ they are concentrated and last a Long time. Since you are a wavy girl they also have a line of curly hair products, B.B. Curl, and the Curl Creme only needs a dime-size portion. Their videos are good and many salons carry the line and educate stylists annually. Highly recommend! This quiz helps and is pain-free (no email signups, etc) https://www.bumbleandbumble.com/hair-quiz

Denise

Yeah, I can’t afford that either. And with the conversion to CAD my god! 🫠 Try Kristin Ess. All of her products I’ve tried are amazing.

Cynthia

I wish I could help but I have straight hair. I can’t justify spending that much on a hair product.

Kay

I have wavy hair that is on the dry side. I also just air dry and go. I use leave-in conditioner. Alaffia Beautiful Curls. I mix it with water and run it through my hair. I wash twice a week. So on days when it isn’t a wash day, I put in hair oil, either Everyday Oil or almond oil or jojoba oil from the natural grocery store. Keeps my hair in nice condition and people compliment my hair so… the routine seems to be working! oh, the expensive thing that I bought and it also helps is I wear a silk turban to sleep in. I have a cpap so it keeps my hair from getting pulled by the headgear and also keeps my cotton pillowcases from sucking the moisture from my hair. my friend just bought a silk turban after seeing my hair and she also loves it.

Kaff

I’ve use JVN air dry cream for over a year and really like it. Under $30 for a big tube. There’s a travel size, too, for less.

Carla

I use Kristen Ess Weightless Shine Air Dry Creme. I also have wavy prone to dryness hair. It lasts quite a while and it’s around $12 for 5 ounces.

Betsy

I fear “It’s a 10” leave in conditioner is as good as everyone says. $21 for 4oz. isn’t *dirt* cheap but it will last a good bit.

Anon

I have the same hair and I accidentally stumbled on Desert Essence Dry Scalp Shampoo and Conditioner. It made a world of difference for my dry wavy hair. I leave the shower feeling like I already put a leave-in conditioner in. Worth a try!

Sar

I vote for Aussie Miracle Repairer! It smells amazing, but not super overpowering, as well.

Wavy

2 pumps of conditioner in a spray bottle with water! I do the same styling as you (wavy hair, air dry only) and this works great for me!

jen

theres something called ‘bedhead.’ a hairdresser used in on my flyaway hair and it was instant bliss. comes in a bright pink bottle.

Sasha in Montana

I love Pacifica products. Not terribly expensive, a little goes a long and they smell so amazing. I have very long wavy blonde hair that is a bit dry and tends to tangle that I don’t trim very often and pretty much never do anything with and like the Salty waves spray and cream and also all the Pineapple curls stuff

Adley

My very favorite, very cheap product for dry wavy hair is aloe vera. That’s right. Just aloe vera. I scrunch it into my hair when wet and it does wonders.

Amelia

I love the Odele leave in conditioner for my wavy hair. It’s very light weight and just gives a little extra shine and definition. https://www.ulta.com/p/leave-in-conditioner-pimprod2037396?sku=2605226&cmpid=PS_Non!google!Product_Listing_Ads&CAWELAID=330000200002990812

Jane

That was also my first thought when I clicked the link… (a shame because Jo’s hair always seems so shiny so would have loved to try it). I sometimes buy more expensive products to use when I really need a good hair day, and cheaper products for regular days.

Claire

I use Ora’s Amazing Herbal body oil and other products on my skin, and when I am done and have only residue left on my hands I run that through my hair and massage into the ends. It tames the frizzies near my scalp and gives my fine, mostly straight hair some body and light waves. The prices are very reasonable, and the products last a long time.

carson

I bought a bottle of Jojoba oil on sale (has the closest structure to human sebum) and put a few drops on my palms then rub it into my ends and lightly all over damp hair, then comb or brush later to distribute it. The next day, after sleeping on it, it has distributed and keeps my hair smoother and healthy.

Cara

Jojoba oil. I get mine at Trader Joe’s. I put it in a badger brand glass bottle with a pump that came with body oil. I like to put a few drops of essential oil in too (usually the rose essence my sweet sister gave me). Put a little in your hand, gently rub your hands together to warm it, and put it wherever needs some moisturizing- face, back of hands, belly. They smooth the tiny bit left of your hands through your hair. You can do this with wet or dry hair but I think dry is easiest to see what you are doing. Frugal solidarity! I get that you might feel embarrassed but I am proud of you and me for working with what we have and managing our finances. Also, jojoba oil works better than the fancy products I tried in my early 20s when I was not managing money well.

I’m running a half marathon that ends right around when/where No Kings kicks off in Park Slope, so I’d have to straight-up flee if I DIDN’T want to join in (boy howdy am I joining in). I’ll be the old hipster limping and yelling in a fire-breathing eagle tee, haha. https://www.instagram.com/p/DLtC_2jPIRk/?igsh=NDRleHNhMnBkaWd0

I have a question for the CoJ admin team – I used to receive notifications when someone would reply to my comments on your blog posts. For quite awhile now, even when I select ‘notify of new replies’ for comments, I haven’t received them. Do you know why that’s happening? Is this happening to anyone else? There are so many comments threads I would have loved to follow up on but the amount of scrolling is too much.

We will look into this!

” ‘notify of new replies’ for comments” has never been a visible option on my comment form!!! I use Firefox on a mac. Would LOVE this option!

+1. Though, back in the day I quit clicking on it because I got a notification for any new comments, not just replies to my own.

OK I’m not gonna tempt myself and read through these links yet (gotta save them for coffee tomorrow morning!) – but I keep meaning to say: the only thing I can think of when you share your new fave haircare product is Roz Gruber, from Fisk. She WOULD have a haircare line! 😝

Danielle

Ha! As both a hair milk and Fisk fan I love this!

We just started watching Fisk last night!!!! Oh my gosh, what a funny funny show
