A Morning at Sézane’s New Brooklyn Store

For more than a decade, my everyday uniform has almost always included pieces from the French brand Sézane (like, their chore coat, comfy jeans and trusty sneakers). So, this weekend I was excited to visit their new store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn…

Sézane’s New Brooklyn Store

As we walked in, we were greeted with croissants and lemonade.

The bright space was filled with a wall of colorful knits…

…and cool patent boots.

The Sézane staff was wonderful, helping everyone find sizes and playing around with styling. Many of them are French, and I loved hearing the different regional accents.

I tried on the softest hoodie sweater with ’70s trousers and double-strap heels…

…and how gorgeous is their bucket bag in the chocolate croc print?

Suddenly, a sweet scent came wafting into the store, and I realized that Sézane was making crêpes outside for passersby. You could choose either Nutella or sugar and lemon. (Which would you pick? I went with the latter.)

Next, I tried on their iconic trench — which comes in 12 colors, including gingham — over a Peter Pan collar shirt and wide-leg jeans.

Finally, we said goodbye to their lovely team — how beautiful is that plaid coat with a removable scarf?! — and promised we’d be back soon.

Oh wow, Joanna, I really enjoyed this. What a lovely mental escape this was, and of course I’ve loved Sezane for years!

Tesa

I bought of of their trench coats a few seasons ago and it is a STAPLE! It is definitely pricy, but not compared to the Burberry one I really wanted…so girl math :)

A J

Can anyone comment about very similar clothes across brands? I’m so curious about this. For example, this lace trim voile top from Talbots: https://www.talbots.com/lace-trim-voile-top/P251075043.html?dwvar_P251075043_color=PINK%20ROSETTE&dwvar_P251075043_sizeType=MS&dwvar_P251075043_size=094&cmp=dfc-TLB-google-pla-OG_GOOG_PLA_PLA_BRANDNONCORE_REV_GENERAL&ogmap=PLA%7CPLA%7CGOOG%7CBRAND%7C%7CSITEWIDE%7C%7COG_GOOG_PLA_PLA_BRANDNONCORE_REV_GENERAL%7C%7Badgroup%7D%7C186408911889%7C22877327706%7C&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22877327706&gbraid=0AAAAAD68S1nO1YVxsFe_OzNhciOBnbaeT&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI8fr5us3yjwMVtUlvBB0YXTPpEAQYASACEgLNXPD_BwE Compare it to Sezane’s Rym shirt: https://www.sezane.com/us-en/product/rym-shirt/light-rosewood#size-0

Elena

AJ, they are so similar! I think the the main difference visually being that the Sezane one has bigger shirt cuffs. Did you look at the fabric content of both? The one from Talbots is 100% cotton (my preference) and the Sezane one is a mix of poly and cotton. Based on that, I’d buy the Talbots… cotton wears better over time. If they were both 100% cotton, I’d buy the Sezane one… it’s only $30 more and I love the exaggerated cuff. Great find and happy shopping!!!!

Tovah

Earlier this year COJ posted about a collaboration, I think with J Crew, with a lot of red and baby blue items. Does anyone remember the name or have a link for this?? I am having shopping fomo

A J

Tovah, I can’t find the post, but maybe it was this: https://www.jcrew.com/feature/rouje-x-jcrew?srsltid=AfmBOoqiPsjONOF995sX7ZldEs1fl08jC3J6GGT2fLA9FqpPmgLqd29R

Jeanne

I typed JCrew into the CoJ search bar and this light blue/red post came up. Is this it? https://cupofjo.com/2025/08/18/best-maternity-clothes-summer/

Tovah

Thank you AJ! It was the Rouje

Daniela

Joanna that last photo of you – you bought everything for that outfit right? It is honestly perfection on you.

Maya

I was in the SF store last weekend and was admonished for removing/unfolding one of the cozy sweaters from their built-in wall of sweaters! Not a great way to sell that mech, Sezane!

KS

Jo – is there a NYC guide coming up anytime soon?! This reminded me of something that was posted on CoJ a few weeks back. Dying to have a current one! Heading to the East Coast/NYC next week!

Jade

I would love an update too. I am taking my parents (72 &73) to New York from Australia next year for a wedding and would love some local recommendations (including great souvenir ideas for kids!)

Maywyn

Sezane Welcome to America! Sezane is on my radar from watching a vlog, Arielle in Paris. It is fantastic to know there is a store in the USA.

mary

oh my so many pretty things! love the black sandals! any chance you know that brand???? thanks for always bringing a smile to my day!

Maureen

Hi Mary! They are Sezane, here is the link.

andrea

Good morning! I just realized I’ve read CoJ since post 1 and have commented many times before, and although I’ve thought this countless times over the years, I realized I don’t know if I have ever actually commented that OMG Joanna you are SO BEAUTIFUL. Inside + out! I hope you feel it! xoxo

Joanna Goddard

oh my gosh, Andrea! thank you so much, that made my day xoxo

Stacey S

Beautiful fall collection- Sezan. But this year, I cannot prop up this economy. Watching the Jimmy Kimmel situation made me understand very quickly how much everything still simply turns on money–regardless of the tough-guy distractions. I don’t think consumers understand how much power they still have. In a country of no laws and no science–we need to take the action within our control. The top 10% income earning households are responsible for 50% of the spending. Much of it is pure consumption and it’s propping up this economy. If the economy declines, our representatives are in jeopardy (as they should be for supporting an autocracy). I like to shop and especially at the start of a new season–but this year I am saving for our future selves and supporting our local public radio.

Greta

Well said! I’m taking this to heart.

Sasha in Montana

I’m with you Stacey (not that I could afford Sezanne anyways, let’s be real). Small *fun* purchases are just no longer fun. I will still be buying a few things for my baby grandson’s first bday, and a few Xmas gifts. But I am going very small otherwise. I’m treating myself to a lot of mums for the porch from a local nursery, and some pumpkins from our local employee owned grocery. I have enough sweaters and jeans to last a life time and fashionable just doesn’t matter so much when our democracy is at stake. The only real power we have is with our $$$

Jeanne

I think people feel if they can’t boycott 100%, they just should forget it. That’s not true! Even a 10% drop in sales can have big results. Target had less than a 10% drop in sales and foot traffic over the fiscal year. This caused a $12B+ valuation drop, 30% share decrease and forced the ceo resignation. In one week Disney dropped $4B and the full force of the boycott hadn’t peaked yet. It’s a reminder that we have more power than we think we do. Support what you believe in and do what you can do.

Ollie

Thank you for this gentle reminder for us all. I love the idea of redirecting some of my funds towards public radio.

Liz

Right?! Who can afford to buy clothes brand new anyway, prices being what they are? All this to say, I will be wearing what I already own or buying secondhand. Fashion feels very unimportant right now. And as you say, imagine if each of us channeled the hundreds of dollars we’d spend at Sezane into donating to causes that are making a difference.

Farhana

Thank you, Stacey S and all who chimed in. Boycotting can and will make ALL the difference as everything is tied to $$$. I’m boycotting Amazon, Target, Walmart etc, don’t subscribe/ stream to any channels/ boxes, and have set limits on Trader Joe’s- necessities (non processed ingredients) only. And I do Cruelty Free only. I wouldn’t shop Sezan as I don’t know where they stand on the live streamed genocide on Gaza by Israel. I still boycott Chanel and Ford.. So yes, it can be done.

Sara

I’m so grateful for your post and agree 100%, I’m going for a no buy year in terms of clothing and non-essentials. I will say that you can find Sezane on Poshmark at much better prices with the added benefit to the environment of buying second hand. Many of the items sold on Poshmark have never been worn, tags still attached!

Jen

What an amazing selection of “looks”. I pretty much thrift all of my clothes (and resell some on Poshmark) but I might try to re-create some of these outfits with second hand finds. The leopard print midi skirt is amazing!

Carrie

Such lovely things. And I couldn’t help but notice “Bonjour Bro” on the window, something your boys would surely appreciate.

smoothliminal

lol i bet it’s “bonjour, brooklyn,” but “bonjour, bro” is infinitely better 👲🏽🛹

Joanna Goddard

hahahahah

andrea

laughing at my desk!

Suz

I’ve had my eye on the Marlys jacket in Chestnut leather for some time! But I have to try it on in person first.

Emily O

That trench in choco – my word! And when in doubt I always pick citrus

Annie

That red shoe is gorgeous on you Joanna! My favourite is the Viktor coat – perfect fall vibes. I also noticed that Sézanne has a home collection – has anyone seen it IRL?

Boerumama

I feel that if you are going to run an ad for a company like this, you should at least offer a discount code or giveaway.

Margot

Oh my goodness. I’m just grateful for all the great free content and community Jo offers.

Helen

Same, Margot.

Jeanne

The discount is not up to Joanna. It’s up to the company. I have zero problem skipping a sponsored post if CoJ receives a little bit of operating income so that we can read for free and she can pay her staff.

Anon

Can they open a store in Melbourne, Australia.

Owl

I hope you purchased the “ softest hoodie sweater with ’70s trousers and double-strap heels…”. You look amazing!

Elle

Came here to say that! Perfect outfit on you. And I hope you got that coat! We had a Sezane in Boston but it’s gone. I regret that I didn’t buy their wonderful little suede bucket bag with fringe. I couldn’t decide on a color because they were all so great, and next thing I knew, they stopped selling them.

Kelly

I love Sezane!! I’m lucky to live in Europe so you can usually find it affordably on Vinted secondhand, I just got a Boyfriend shirt for 40 euro. Claudine collars like that are the kind schoolgirls wear, so it’s really cute to match my daughter in her little tablier

Amy

I bought the Bobby jacket when I was in Paris this summer :) It was my only souvenir from the trip and I love it. Timeless, chic, and every time I wear it, it just brings back a little bit of Paris to me.

jessica

The plaid coat, the black flats, the alpaca sweater – love!!!

Lauren O

Real talk: Food is basically sugar, lemon, and stuff I consume perfunctorily as I’m biding my time until more sugar and lemon.

HERE2SAY

Hahahahahah! Yes!!!!

Meg

Their clothes are not sustainably made and are way too pricey for the quality. Pass!

Emma

Agree! I feel the brand lives off an air of fancy Frenchness and (former) good quality/sustainability but many of their ‘wool’ sweaters and trousers are actually polyester mixes. Not great for recycling and also not worth the price for me. To be fair, a lot of brands suffer from this combination. I use this sustainability rating site if I want to check my hunch (good or bad): https://directory.goodonyou.eco That said, I do like and trust that Jo and others can find future proof items there!

Greta

I have to agree that the quality of the Sezane pieces I bought generally was lower than I would expect at this price point. Not every item–the Max shirt is sturdy as can be, for instance–but I am salty that I paid good money for their handbags.

jules

I find the quality seriously lacking as well. Ditto Farm Rio – cheapest, nastiest fabrics. Sad because I’m always sucked in by the aesthetics of each.

Mandy

Everyone is entitled their own opinion but every piece I own (which is upward of 15) still wear beautifully after years. Especially their coats, they only get better with wear.

Agnès

Emma thank you so much for that link, so useful…

Annie D

To Sezane’s credit, the website includes detailed information for each piece, including material composition, where it was made, and care instructions. Honestly, I find it to be impressive in terms of transparency. I wish every retailer would commit to providing information like this so I can make an informed choice.I get that fashion feels super frivolous right now with all the things (waves hands around), but I also think it’s important to applaud the companies that are getting some things right so we as consumers can decide.

Amy

Would be wonderful to see even more sustainable brands on CoJ! So happy already about all the content on thrifting, there are so many small, struggling brands out there

M J

They are also incredibly size exclusive.

Piper

Yeah you can see the material for each piece online. Very, very few are made with high-quality fabric…yet all of their pieces are sooo expensive. Very suspicious! But normal for fast fashion (which it is, even if it seems fancy).

Angela

This looks sooooo fun! Love Sezane style.

HJBK

That long trench in black, brown or dark olive <3

Judy

Does anyone know which blouse the young lady is wearing in the first picture?

A J

Judy, I think it’s the Enea blouse. https://www.sezane.com/us-en/product/enea-blouse/ecru#size-12

Ashley

So many Clydes! 😍

Anon for this one

Let me start by saying this new store looks beautiful and I would probably shop here. But I also want to warn folks ordering in the US: I made my first Sezane purchase this summer after learning about Sezane years ago on Cup of Jo. I opened the package so excitedly to try the dress on and *3 gigantic mealworms fell out of the dress and started crawling across my floor.* I won’t go on and on about this terrifying experience but it did ship locally from a warehouse in New Jersey, so I’ve been giving friends a heads’ up that in store shopping might be best.

dana

yikes!!!!

Sasha in Montana

Oh my god. I guess that could happen with anything really, but I get why it would be hard to disassociate. When I was pregnant with my second baby, and had been very sick with the flu, just recurrent, my husband surpass me with a take out lunch burrito from my favor Mexican place. Just as i took my first bite I noticed one of the black olives move. It was a slug. It took me YEARS to go back. My husband would ask, I’d say I think I’m ready! We’d drive up and my stomach would turn and nope, not ready. Lol. I can laugh about it now. I did eventually overcome!! And sadly the restaurant has now closed. This stuff is traumatic!

Anon for this one

Yes, Sasha! Thanks for the validation. I felt like my skin was crawling for days. WHICH WOULD ALSO HAPPEN IF I SAW A SLUG IN MY BURRITO. lol. I really wanted Sezane to be like, “oh my gosh (or oh mon dieu), we can’t believe this happened to you.” But instead they just shrugged and gave me a store credit, and with it I bought a beautiful hair clip, and opened its box very slowly…

Sasha in Montana

See, I can kinda forgive some bugs. Once. But boy, I would be expecting some hearty WE’RE SO TERRIBLY SORRY HERE’S OUR FIRST BORN CHILD level groveling. I respect the heck outta and am loyal forever when companies act like our opinion of them actually matters.

Megan

I am very intrigued by the Peter Pan collar trend. I live in DC, and earlier this month I was on Capitol Hill and walked past someone and I was like, oh, she looks familiar, do I know her and it turned out it was the singer Lauren Daigle—she looked very cool in her massive collar!! https://www.instagram.com/p/DOYwecwFYOV/

Chris

Everything is gorgeous and my eye is on the cropped trench.

Jill

I bought the cropped trench about a month ago and am obsessed! If you are thinking about it…do it! You won’t regret it ;)

Estee

Gosh all of the clothes and accessories are so gorgeous!

summer

I have one of the sweaters pictured on the knit wall and omg it is my favorite piece of clothing. I’m so happy it is almost the season for my fave cardigan!!

Katie

Lemon and sugar crepes are my absolute favourite! Simple and delicious.

Joanna Goddard

I had never tried that kind of crepe before but my mom used to make lemon sugar pancakes and they were so so good.

Deb

Ditto – lemon and sugar crepes are my first (and only) pick!

Stacey

Butter, sugar, cinnamon! I love the French, it just doesn’t fit my lifestyle/city. Love the Peter pan collar, I dream of the day I can “pull off” that style. Very chic!

Celeste

I would wear the wool dress and yes, get the sugar and lemon crepe.

Carlota

Pretty! But is anyone else exhausted by shopping for new clothes? I’ll see if I can find anything on a secondhand site. Despite technically being more work, something about the ability to say “eh, I guess they don’t have anything” and closing the tab instead of trying to navigate the new website feels simpler to me.

Bex

100%. Appeals to my decision-fatigue, being able to narrow it down to what’s available at a consignment store. It’s also nice to be able to look at a variety of brands — including lovely Sezane (I’m lucky to live in a city with nice consignment stores) — in the same place.

Megan

I have only recently discovered ThredUp and I am obsessed! Maybe it is the reason you give – they either have what I want or they don’t and I don’t have to look through endless pages.

Emily S

Yes! I also do a LOT of secondhand shopping now. ThredUp is great because I can stalk my saved brands for pieces I love (La Ligne sweaters! Cuyana bags!) for 1/4 of the price.

Kelly

100%! Noihsaf Bazaar is my favorite. https://noihsafbazaar.com/

Anon

I happen to be wearing my Sézane cardigan as I read this! As a cusp-sized Canadian, I did not feel safe buying without trying, so our road trip to California last year was the perfect time to try everything on at the Santa Monica store. I wanted all of it! I was a bit disappointed at the limited sizes available in the pants, dresses, and blouses, but there were still many lovely sweaters to choose from.

Natalie

As a fellow Canadian who won’t be near a store anytime soon; do you feel the sizing was fairly accurate?

Kate

Oh I am in exactly this boat (cusp-sized Canadian, worried about buying online)! Would you be willing to report back on how you found the sizing?

Joanna Goddard

Personally, in case it’s helpful, I’ve found that the jeans run slightly small but everything else feels true to size — EXCEPT the max shirt which is huge, so size way down even if you want an oversized look. Hope this helps!

Kate

This is very helpful…thank you very much! Ordering the Emile cardigan this evening :)

Elisabeth

I would say size up for trousers and waaaay down for knits: I usually wear M/L but I bought an XS cardigan at the Sezane Popup in my town and this is still very large.

Anon

Original Anon here. I can’t comment on the sizing generally because there wasn’t much in my size at the store I visited (esp. pants). Tops and dresses in my usual size tended to be tight across the bust/hips. The sweaters I tried on seemed true to size (assuming roomier fit was intended, per the website photos). XL sweaters were figurine-skimming while L were more fitted. I ended up with the Barry cardigan in XL, which seems to have gotten a bit wider with wear.

Mandy

Sezane clothing is wonderful. Yes to this post!! I wear so many pieces over and over again.

Dana

Okay talk to me about the wider leg crop jeans – I am 55 and have tried on, bought, discarded, donated, rejected more jeans in the past two years than I can even count. What fits, what’s in style, what does a 55 year old even wear? I have one pair of AG Denim that’s good, one pair of Lucky Brand from who knows how long ago that’s finally broken in enough, but beyond that I’m lost. High rise is a must. Can we do the cropped in the winter? With what shoes? I’m a tennis shoes girl – I have three pairs of adidas in fun colors, Nike killshots and Nike blazers, so there’s that, plus the Birkenstock clogs in three fun colors – I like my colorful shoes. But clearly I need jeans help please! Love the look, not sure how to pull it off! Help Help!

mar

I have found the Youtube videos made by this stylist based in the UK to be super helpful in navigating denim types, lengths and how to pair with different shoes: @mmpersonalstyling

Col

My thought is to stick with straight-leg or slight barrel cuts if you’re going for a cropped length. Wide-leg crop is tricky to style with sneakers. (They look chic with tall boots that have a bit of a heel though.) The crop should be at or just above your ankle– no higher.

Midge

You wear them with everything! It’s just training your eye. I wear them with birks, Converse, Blundstones, ballet flats, slides, heels… and I’m 52. I usually wear with boxy sweaters, tucked-in tees, or voluminous untucked linen button downs.

Leigh

Hi Dana. I was in a similar situation as you. I must have bought and returned 15 pairs of wide leg jeans. Also tried another 10 in different stores. I finally found two pairs that I love. Madewell makes them both. Kick out Crop Jeans in Elkton Wash Patch Pocket and Petite Kick out Full Length Jeans in Devito Wash. I’m shocked that the first pair are crop jeans because they are long. I would have said I don’t like crop jeans. These go to about 2 inches before the floor. I’m 5’4″. I love them both and get a lot of compliments on them. I wear them with sneakers, strappy sandals, flip flops, and boots. Highly recommend. I also have a pair of Hudson from years ago that I still wear. Good luck.

Christine

I’ll wear cropped with a boot, something that is about the same depth of color as the denim for continuity (I’m not particularly tall). A warm wool sock and a clog would work. Again, shoot for same tone as denim. If you have a jean shape and fit you love, search eBay or poshmark for that style in different washes. I personally have good luck with jeans from Loft. They fit my caboose without the gaping in the back.

Melissa

I am 33 but I could have written this myself. I just want a pair of jeans that aren’t too trendy but are still stylish, comfortable but sturdy enough to last. An impossible quest!

Amy

Check out the Bella jeans from Quince! I am 5’2″ and the cropped straight leg jeans fit perfectly. The medium-toned denim feels timeless, they’re soft and comfortable, and they’re only $50.

jen

have you tried j.jill> since i found their jeans, i wear nothing but.

Josette

I am 59 and just retired a beloved wide leg cropped Banana Republic pair of jeans for 2 pairs of Maeve from Anthropologie cropped wide leg jeans in different washes. I wear them with boots in the cold months, sandals/tennis shoes or loafers when not worried bout cold ankles.

Laura

Hi Dana! Fellow 55 yo here. I, too, have been super jeans-challenged for several years. Not cropped but thought I’d share my find from last year. These really do fit just like the Gap jeans I had in my early 20’s! https://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=545806002&vid=1#pdp-page-content

Kathy

Melissa – may I suggest the Citizens of Humanity Ayla jeans? Wide leg and stylish, but also comfortable? I wore them on a plane recently! I’m also 9 months post partum and none of my old jeans fit right, so I got these and am obsessed. The style has been around for a while so there are a bunch on poshmark.

Dana

Oh my gosh SO grateful for all the jeans help from everyone! Thank you! I have lots to work on now! Big denim hugs to al!

Anna

I bought Chlo silk shirt last year, after reading your blog about trusty first-date uniform. Love it. Sexy but modest at the same time, if that makes sense, :)

Joanna Goddard

I feel the same way! So happy you like it xoxo

Sarah G

Ahhhh Joanna I’m going to NYC next week and Sezane is on the list! A friend gave me a gift card just for the trip. Which store is bigger / has more – the Brooklyn one or SoHo one?? I will only have time for one!

Joanna Goddard

The Brooklyn store is nicer IMO! It’s so bright

Christine

Was just in the soho one and while lovely, there wasn’t a ton of variety

Andrea

To chime in here, I went to the Soho store last spring and waited in line for about 45 minutes to go inside. Not sure if that’s par for the course in Brooklyn as well, but just some information for your planning! (PS it was worth the wait!)

Hillary R

Love all the Fall brown shades showing up!!

Annie

Sézane’s quality and fit is so perfect. We had a pop-up store in DC for about year. My heart broke when they left town. Enjoy!!
