13 Readers Share Their Best Summer Moments

Yayoi Kusama exhibit at Louisiana Museum Denmark

How’s your summer going? We asked Cup of Jo readers on Instagram to share photos of happy moments and got over 100 responses! They felt impossible to narrow down, but here are 13 that made us smile…

Above: “We went to the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark. I learned about it from Joanna’s Copenhagen post a couple years ago and was tickled to finally visit. My son Henry and I loved the installation Gleaming Lights of the Souls by Yayoi Kusama — so magical!” — Katherine, Bremerton, Washington

Cup of Jo readers share best summer moments

“Here I am with my best friends from college. Two of us just turned 40, and one of us is going through a divorce. We had no idea how healing and celebratory it would be to scream our faces off with 20,000 other Backstreet Boys fans. No spa trip could ever compare.” — Lauren, Queens, New York

backstreet boys concert Vegas

“This summer, I saw Backstreet Boys live for the first time, as previously I didn’t have the funds to see them. My husband came to Vegas with me, but none of my friends wanted to go to the concert, so I just purchased my ticket and had the time of my life. They played my favorites, like ‘I Want It That Way’ and ‘Drowning.’ I also met some great ladies in line, and we’ve kept in touch.” — Carol, Brooklyn, New York

kayaking with dog

“Kayaking with our dog, Barley! Before having a kid two years ago, our adventures centered around our dog. While our toddler kayaked with Grandma and Papa, we got to hang out with doggo like old times.” — Aimee, Minneapolis

swallows nest

“Every year, a pair of swallows builds a nest on our front porch. We’ve learned that the magic number of babies-to-grown-birds is three. Any more babies, and at least one dies due to lack of space in the nest. This summer, there were FIVE baby birds. We agonized over potential deaths; I grieved in anticipation. Then one day, I stepped outside and counted seven swallows soaring and swooping over our front yard. All five babies made it to flight day! A miracle flying over our home.” — Ashley, Fort Worth, Texas

cathedral falls West Virginia

“My family and I went on a five-week road trip. I meticulously planned our stops, including baseball games, National Parks, playgrounds, bookstores, etc. But one of my favorite moments was unplanned. In Pittsburgh, a lady overheard my husband and me talking about our West Virginia plans. She told us that we must go to Cathedral Falls. Seeing our son and daughter wading in the streams was unparalleled.” — Kohinoor, Queens, New York

spa morning at home

“My nine-year-old son and I have ‘spa mornings,’ where we make something together (a yogurt and honey face mask, or a hand scrub with sugar and coconut oil) and then pretend we’re running a day spa, complete with a lavender candle, nature sounds, and — the pièce de résistance — a blanket warmed in the dryer. Slow living at its best.” — Tracy, Tequesta, Florida

Bavarian restaurant Williams Lake New Mexico

“Every July, when it’s 100+ degrees at home, we head to the mountains for a week. We always hike four miles to Williams Lake in New Mexico. The trail is lined with wildflowers and rocks to rest on, and our motivation is the pretzels and beer waiting for us at The Bavarian Restaurant at the end.” — Lisa, Edmond, Oklahoma

Cup of Jo readers share best summer moments

“I’m due with our second baby in September. We live in a small apartment with our preschooler; I work with kids; and I’m introverted. Naturally, I constantly feel touched out. So, this July, my spouse and kid went to visit my in-laws, while I stayed home alone in the blissful quiet. I ate whatever I wanted, I cleaned up after only myself, and I slept in the middle of the bed. It was glorious.” — Kim B., Oakland, California

Punakha suspension bridge

“My boyfriend and I visited Bhutan, where on my spiritual birthday I crossed the suspension bridge at Punakha. It was drizzling, and near the end, he said, ‘Look back, there’s a rainbow.’” — Em, Pasig, Philippines

shaving cream fight outside

“For years, we’ve hosted a shaving cream fight with our neighbors. We wear goggles and bathing suits, and blast a playlist that includes Ozzy (RIP), Pantera, and the like. As a mom who struggles to play with my kids, I cherish this tradition, which ends with pizza, popsicles and an old-fashioned garden hose.” — Rebecca, Decatur, Georgia

Cup of Jo readers share best summer moments

“I live in Germany, far from my family in Kansas City. My big sister was traveling with her family in the UK, so I jumped at the chance to meet them for a few days in London. After we lost our dad in December, and my pup died in January, hugging my sister in London felt like the first exhale I’ve managed in this Big Year of Grief.” — Anna, Hamburg, Germany

Cup of Jo readers share best summer moments

“Is there anything sweeter than lying in the grass while soft baby hands explore your face? My husband and I spent the Fourth of July at Troutbeck hotel, just like we did in 2024 when I was pregnant. There’s nothing more magical than realizing that the future we dreamed of last year is here.” — Sarah, Arlington, Virginia

P.S. A very low-key summer checklist and a great summer read.

My trans-masc son came home from his first year away at uni in the UK. His time away has mostly gone well, but it’s been a big shift for all of us. He came home tired and sometimes grumpy and most often stayed in his room. I asked what he wanted to do and he said, “See the Appalachians!” So we left occupied DC and got a small airbnb in West Virginia. Ended up going to the Skyline Caverns on a whim. All three of us went from hot and irritable to bowled over and ecstatic (and cool thanks to cave temps). The photo the guide took of all three of us is pure magic. That moment together. Pure magic.

Rebecca

I am so excited that you featured our shaving cream fight!!! I’ve been reading CoG for 15 years and the blog has been there for me through it all <3

Jessica

Any tips? Does each kid get a can? This sounds like a lot of fun to replicate.

Kate

Yes I’d also love to know the mechanics of this!

Brigitte

I would love to know more details too! This sounds like a great idea for my son’s birthday party!

Megan

This summer has been beautiful but ROUGH. I was laid off from my beloved federal government job in July because of the president. I have an orthopaedic issue that will not rest and makes it really hard be active, which is especially tough now that I have all this free time! But I got to escape the VA heat to be with family in Maine for much of the summer. One of the highlights was going out on a friend’s boat to his small oyster farm and eating oysters straight from the water with the mountains of Acadia in the distance. Even when things are painful (physically, emotionally, all of it)–what an incredible gift to have a beating heart and be on this planet.

anon

I lost my beloved federal job too. I also tried to make the most of it by leaving DC with my family. Coming home to literal tanks in our peaceful streets…I have no words. I need to leave.

Christi

I am so incredibly impressed by the swallows nest it *brought me to tears*. This time of year can feel impossible with the never-ending list of house tasks to complete before fall, and this invisible pressure to make my home perfect. But those swallows – their home is so clearly scrapped together, but so intricate and beautiful. And they managed to keep all five chicks alive! 😭 It reminded me it’s okay to not-perfect. (Yes, I am writing this while eating a slice of chocolate cake – hormones are a-surging today!)

Sarah

The swallows made me tear up too <3 <3 <3 So beautiful! And dang, now I want a piece of chocolate cake! Also, I loved how you put this: heir home is so clearly scrapped together, but so intricate and beautiful. And they managed to keep all five chicks alive! 😭 It reminded me it’s okay to not-perfect.

Kate

My husband and I both lost close family members to cancer in the past 2 years. This summer, we did the Ride to Conquer Cancer together, which is a 200km (125mile) bike ride between two cities. It took 2 babysitters and 2 grandparents to watch our 3 children, but with their help we managed to raise over $15,000 towards cancer research. The ride was emotional, and gave a moment to pause and reflect. Each of the nearly 5k riders carried their one story of how cancer touched their lives, with bikes decorated with flags and photos of loved ones. Riding in memory of my aunt and sister in law was by far my most memorable moment of my summer.

Kate

This post gave me life – thank you! I’ve been neglectful of myself in many ways for a while, but not taking a real vacation has been a particular weak point. Decided to book a week in Colorado this summer and it was fantastic – a change of pace, beautiful scenery, lots of exercise. I’m planning to go bigger next year and achieve my bucket list goal of visiting Ireland and Scotland. Life’s too short. Take the time off, get away, refresh your brain and spirit.

Elle

We go to Maine every August around my birthday. We never miss the annual Jesup Memorial Library book sale in Bar Harbor, my favorite event of the summer. Because we need more books, haha. People donate thousands of used books, clear out the shelves of their family summer cottage, etc. Volunteers organize them by category on tables under tents, and help people find what they’re looking for. You pay whatever you like, and it all goes to support the library. We filled a box with finds, including “Mrs. Rorer’s Cookbook” (1902), a Croatian cookbook, and a book about Liberty London. (Last year, I was all about Elizabeth Strout.) We bought three kinds of cookies at the bake sale and a beautiful bouquet of garden flowers. At the start of the sale, the tables were full, with more books stored in boxes underneath. We went back again when it was less busy, and the tables had been restocked, the boxes were mostly empty, and the librarians were taking turns reading aloud from their favorite books. Now we have to find new homes for a lot of our old books, or our new ones will end up on the floor, but we’ll manage. That’s what Little Free Libraries are for. We’ve already reserved our room at the inn for same time, next year.

Chris

All these photos are the summer vibes! I’m looking forward to watching the US Open with an iced latte.

Violet

Catching up with friends who live in different states and friends who live in the same state but have not been able to see each other in months due to big adult changes. My grandma getting her bloodwork done and the results show she is cancer-free. When I was having a rough day at work and spending time with my uncle and grandparents afterwards turned this weird ugly day into the opposite. My traditional conservative paternal grandma seeing my tattoos for the first time and surprising me with telling me that they are beautiful. Taking some solo time in gorgeous Colorado. While I am grateful for friends and good human connection in general, this year has been a further emphasis on how much I relish spending time on my own. And that there is nothing wrong with that.

Erin

We also went to the Louisiana museum- I knew right away that picture was the Kusama instillation. It was so cool!! My kids were amazing for most our our 2 weeks around Denmark, but that day they were kind of stinkers. Still such a beautiful and amazing museum, and Denmark overall was fantastic!

Emily O

This summer I went away for a whole week with two best girl friends to Acadia Maine. We left kids and husbands and did the deliciously indulgent things we never get to do at home! Author Nora McInery recently said something along the lines of ‘why would I vacation with my family- I LIVE with them! I should be on vacation with my best friend” and I couldn’t agree more! Haha

Heather

Hi. I’m only here to say that I am SOBBING reading about these gorgeous life moments. I’m on my period and I often get annoyed at how easily I cry during this week…but right now I’m LIVING FOR IT. Thank you, CoJ community. <3

dani

Tracy! You are a dream. As a mom to a toddler boy, I can only hope and pray.

Sammy

Rebecca- how fun! I was thinking that a shaving cream fight would work perfectly in our kid-centered neighborhood. Then lo and behold, I see that you also live in Decatur, Ga! I can’t think of a better neighborhood to raise kids in!

anna s

lauren, if you hadn’t said backstreet boys i would’ve seriously doubted you were 40!! you guys look so young! nominating the three of y’all for a beauty uniform post because we need your secrets.

Lauren E.

Omg Anna you have made my YEAR!! We’ve got the glow of youthful crushes on our faces LOL

Anna

My whole family is feeling quite thin and frayed after a truly intense few years, culminating in a bonkers challenging winter this year. I am lucky enough to have stumbled into a month and a half off this summer, so I didn’t put the kids in camp and instead we are just… resting. Recovering. So many trips to the library, so many novels read. So many pool swims, so much fizzy water, so much stone fruit, so many Häagen-Dasz ice cream bars, so many easy dinners of nachos or veggies and hummus. Slow, easy, comforting, hazy. No flashy moments – just the juiciness of letting everything soften in the heat. We needed this so badly.

Maria

What a beautifully written comment! I felt myself relaxing just reading it!

Joy

That sounds like a wonderful summer. I’m glad you and your family had the time to recover and recuperate.

Kate

Beautifully written and expressed. Sending lots of positive energy to you and yours.

Jessica

This is so wonderful.

Helga

I laughed, I cried, and I loved every single one of these posts. The CoJ community means the world to me.

Jules

I had some fun memories this summer! Our family threw my husband and I a surprise 40th bday and our friends flew in from all over….Taking a boat out on Lake George, NY to Picnic Island with our kids and grandpa where we grilled burgers and ran off the dock into the crystal clear waters on a sunny 90 degree day…and reuniting with my college besties for a long weekend of tubing, hiking, and hot tubbing at where we went to school in the NC mountains.

Kelli

Spent the summer trying to figure out what color to paint my house. I have a question I’m hoping to get some help with. My husband and I have an opportunity to take a vacation mid October, but have no idea where to go. We’re teachers and summer has always been our only opportunity. Any ideas were it would great to explore without lots of rain?

Erin

Vermont!

Anon Mom

Japan!

J G

Big Sur!

Christina

Kelli – what color did you pick for your house? We are having ours done too and deep into this rabbit hole

Pru

India! Book through explore and do Rajasthan. You won’t regret it!

Allison

If you’ve ever wanted to visit Texas, October is a good time! The weather is sunny and in the 60s-70s pretty much the entire month. There are some beautiful crystal blue lakes in Central Texas (San Marcos area).

Nicole

Hawaii is lovely in October!

Erin

I just came back from an 8 day trip to Scotland with my mom. We were supposed to go last year but had a family emergency. We bucked the tour and created our own itinerary which included a stop in Shetland. It was a magical and amazing time. I was almost heart broken to leave. I cannot wait to take my own daughter there one day.

Kate

Erin – living my dream. Any specific tips or places you loved the most?

Lauren O

The pop that enters your body when you’re young and impressionable sticks around like microplastics, baby. God help you, strangers, if “I Want It That Way” cues up on the Muzak when we’re both at CVS, because I WILL sweep the air for every drop, and I’ll clench my fists and belt the “don’t wanna hear you SAY” break aloud in the middle of picking up colonoscopy-prep supplies.

Erin

As someone who may or may not have been caught dancing to the Spice Girls’ “Wannabe” in the cereal aisle at the grocery store, yes to all this!

Lauren O

The power of Spice compels you!

Anna

Truly, one of the most delightful parts of midlife is the pop of my youth soundtracking all errands. If you hear a full-chest “AIN’T NOTHING BUT A HEARTACHE” coming back at you, it’s me.

Heather

Definitely the best summer moment for us was my husband getting a job after almost a year of being unemployed. I know there are so many out there struggling to find work and my thoughts are with you. It’s hard out there.

Cat

Oh and the best thing that happened this summer was taking my baby to her first edinburgh fringe show. I’m not gonna lie, my husband encouraged me to book the tickets and on the day I did NOT want to go. She’s super wriggly and vocal at the moment and I thought it was going to be DIFFICULT but as soon as the performance started she was mesmerised. Watching her little face light up and follow the action around the stage was just the best feeling. I am so glad I agreed to do something a little out of my comfort zone, the payoff was so much better than I could’ve imagined

Cat

I am literally going on a 48hour trip to Copenhagen this Sunday (for a tiny kid free anniversary celebration) and I have been wondering whether it would be silly to spend one of those days going to the Louisiana museum instead of staying in the city then I open this post and look! It’s the first thing mentioned in this post! Now I’m thinking I should go? I’ve been before for a short break so have already been to a lot of the tourist spots… if anyone has been and can help curb my indecisiveness it would be much appreciated haha

Madeline

Go! It’s magical. I went last September with my husband and I remember it so fondly. The water, the art, the delicious cafe, the beautiful train ride. You won’t regret it!

Sarah

Go to the museum! I loved it and even going there by public transport is really nice and easy.

Nadia

I vote to go to Louisiana! You will still have time to hang in the city in the evening. The train station is close to Tivoli, so when my friend and I returned from Louisiana, we went and had dinner at the delicious food court at Tivoli, then got beers from the beer garden and walked around and went on the roller coaster and Ferris wheel. The scenery was so beautiful as the sun set and the lights turned on for the night. I wasn’t even going to go to Tivoli, but I loved it and highly recommend hitting it up in the evening if you can.

Cat

Ah guys thanks you so much, it’s officially on the list!

Anna

Yes!! Go! It is magical :-)

Justine

This post was such a lovely and bright way to start my morning! Thank you.

Gill

My coworker and I presented at our first ever conference this summer and it went so well! And I took my dog on her first camping trip (and them another) and we both had a blast! There was swimming and lounging and smores and she was in her element.

Ana Devine

Congratulations!!!

Amanda

It’s been been a summer that I don’t know how to put into words just yet. As a teacher, summer has some heavy weight to it and a big task. We need it to refresh and recharge for the next school year. We did what seemed like to be *all the things* but it didnt feel rushed or busy, or over scheduled, which is great. It was full? In summers past I resisted a lot of the extra plans and acitivites for fear of losing out on rest but this summer I just kept saying sure why not. I don’t feel as solidly grounded stepping into a new school year but its probably fine? Some high lights: 20 year class reunions, lake weekends, girls staycation at a local hotel to watch reality TV,got a weekend alone to myself while hubby took the kids, bike rides, walks with my best friend, so much play and too much tv for my 6 year old not in daycare, potty training the 2 year old, corn dogs at the county fair, time spend with so many friends, tractor rides, flashlights in the backyard at night, play therapy for 6 who has been struggling with big anxiety, therapy for myself who also struggles with big anxiety, 4th of july parade, pool parties…its been a good one.

Sarah

There is an exhibit at the Telus Spark museum in Calgary called Quantum Sandbox. It is hard to describe but it is an enormous room where interactive projections, music, and darkness combine to make you feel like you have stepped through to the universe. A narrated portion of it focuses on entanglement and the invisible forces that connect everything. During this moment a glowing circle of light appeared on the floor and my daughter ran to it and started dancing in it. It sent out a line of light and connected with another child dancing in their own circle across the hall. Before I knew it children and adults alike were dancing their hearts out connected to each other by these shivering lines. It was heart-stopping.

Stella

I really love posts featuring COJ readers. It gives me hope and a sense of community!

Claudia

I traveled to Copenhagen and Berlin with my teenage niece and goddaughter as a gift for her 15th birthday. We also visited the Louisiana Museum, which we both loved—and, by the way, we ran into Daniel Brühl there, where I couldn’t help but have a teenage fangirl moment. :)

Melinda

We’re deep in the doldrums of winter in the southern hemisphere so I am living for these comments and excitedly thinking of all that’s ahead in the summer to come 😎 I’m taking four months of long service leave, which is the only break from work I have ever had (apart from maternity leave during covid, which totally does not count). I’m so excited to swim, read and see movies during the day!

Jen

All my planned work contracts were cancelled and my youngest was in school 3 mornings a week. I used 1.5 mornings for applying for work, and 1.5 mornings for walking with friends. I deepened an already old a deep friendship with an old friend my age and, unexpectedly, made a friend of my former high school teacher 20 years later – who, 20 years my senior, has all that gen x wisdom and humor I crave (I’m 40)

Dani

This summer hiding under all the typical summer things, I also went back to eating disorder treatment. I had been before, 3 years ago, and life hit me hard this spring so I jumped into action fast to stop the spiral. I don’t feel like I have many people to talk about this with but I’m just so proud of myself. I filled a lot of holes my recovery was missing since I started 3 years ago and I started to figure out who I was on the other side of this. I finished the summer feeling like I “found myself” more than I ever had before. I am finally truly proud to be walking the path of recovery and choosing to fall and get up again.

Amelia

Congratulations Dani!! I am so proud of you too <3

Ana Devine

So grateful you’re here. So, so grateful.

Yulia

Inspiring. This is how we should all live life: fall and get back up again. <3

Fay

Kim!! Sounds like a perfect time. Best wishes to you in this exciting season. I had a very similar summer several years ago (tiny Oakland apartment, preschooler, pregnant with second baby), and reading your note brought back joyful memories! Thank you for sharing :)

Katie

This is all so inspiring. Taking notes, of big items and small pleasures, as we emerge out of Australian winter. Last summer I spent the whole time working, but I’m inspired to do more!

Megan

My 3 and 5 year old kids took daily swim lessons this summer and both learned to swim. It’s so rare to do something with your kids where you get to see them learning day by day. It was such a pleasure to do that by a pool with a seltzer in hand!

Ivy

We had a lovely summer. Trip to Hawaii, another trip to Door County, Wisconsin. Had my first summer home with both my boys (I’m a teacher). Then last week I got a call that my older brother attempted suicide. He’s on life support now, and is not likely to make it. Wondering if anyone has support or resources for coping with this? I go to therapy regularly, but I still feel walloped, even though I thought it may be coming. I trust this community so much because of all you do to uplift me and each other. Looking for a light during this dark time. Love to you all.

Honeybee

Ivy, I am thinking about you and your brother. I have nothing to offer for recomendations but just wanted you to know I hear you.

Elizabeth

Sending love and light to you, Ivy. It’s OK to feel walloped. This resource may help you, if you want to talk with others in a group setting: https://www.nami.org/support-education/support-groups/nami-family-support-group/

Christina

Dear Ivy, I’m so sorry to hear about your brother. I’m a stranger on the internet that struggles with mental health and I’m holding space for you right now. Sending comfort your way.

Joy

Hi Ivy, this is how I lost my dad, several years ago now, and I’m so sorry. I hope your brother pulls through and recovers. Should he not, my best advice is to take it one day at a time and go easy on yourself. Ugh I’m so sorry, it really is a nightmare.

Anon

Ivy, I’m so sorry. My younger sister went through a really tough battle with mental illness with several suicide attempts. It was awful. I don’t have much in the way of advice, but as someone who struggled a LOT with feeling a sense of responsibility, something my therapist said to me really helped. She said that in all her years in practice, she’s learned that no one can stop someone if they want to do it, that there’s nothing you can say or do (or could have said or could have done). I don’t know if that’s helpful, but it freed me from a lot of guilt and panic. I know it doesn’t make it any easier and I’m so sorry your family is going through this. Sending you lots of love.

Coleen

Hi Ivy. You can research through this link below: https://afsp.org/find-a-support-group/ This may help.

Another Anon

Ivy- really sorry to hear this. @Anon – this is very helpful. My young adult nephew took his life about a week ago. From all outward appearances, it seemed things in his life were drastically improved so it came as a tremendous shock. But also a reminder that we never truly know what is going on with people.

Kate

I’m so sorry, Ivy. I wish I had better recommendations but strongly encourage that you continue therapy and be as gentle with yourself as you can. Treat yourself like you’d treat a dear friend experiencing similar heartache. Sending my very best to you and your family.

Elaine

My favorite summer moment was seeing Jin of BTS on his first concert tour! His voice is so heavenly, and the energy between Jin and ARMY was incredible. I really can’t wait until BTS are on tour again, they’re truly the bright, shining light that makes life worth living for me right now.

Jo Landau

I love this post and this community!! My summer was hugely eventful, and after a hard winter/spring it was much welcome. I turned 33, welcomed a sweet puppy (Ringo) to our home, and self published my first novel!

Corrie

Ashley of Fort Worth, Texas… you’ll probably never see this comment, but THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TELLING US ABOUT SWALLOW BABY SUCCESS. I worked at a national park for several years, and every year, our visitor center swallow babies never made it. So I am so thrilled to hear that all five babies made it. Congrats!

Ashley

It’s me!! Sobbing!!!! I got a tattoo of swallows because of these darlings. Fun fact: a group of swallows is called a gulp!

Justine

Yessss! This story really touched me too! ❤️❤️❤️

Monica

OMG Kim B., I see you. Love this.

Jennifer S

My husband and I had 48 hours in DC in July. We were awed by the Lincoln, Washington, & Jefferson Memorials, humbled by the many War Memorials, inspired by the National Archive, Library of Congress, & FDR Memorial, and delighted by fireworks over the Potomac and the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. We visited our eldest at work, and were so proud to see her living her best life doing meaningful work. (And grateful to our younger children for holding down the fort in our absence!)

jane

Bhutan is high on my bucket list! How was the flight in?!? I’d love to take a three month sabbatical and travel to Japan, Thailand, Vietnam and Bhutan.

Becky

My husband and kids and I lived in Bhutan 2003-2005. You get used to the flight in but it’s definitely wild. We lived above the airport in Paro, so I saw them land and take off all the time. Only saw one non-Druk Air flight that clipped its wings. Luckily everyone was fine

Tara

We’re calling this the Summer of the Merry-Go-Round because my daughter is three and they are her absolute favorite thing. We’ve been hitting them up around our home in Westchester, NY — the Central Park carousel, the one at Rye Playland, at Bear Mountain, and at the Bergen County Zoo. We went out to California for a week in June and rode the carousel at the Happy Hollow Park & Zoo in San Jose. Every carousel gets a minimum of 4 rides!

Kay from Queens

Philly isn’t too far from NYC- the Please Touch Museum has a carousel inside the museum, $5 for unlimited rides and adults are free!

Sonia

I’m from San Jose and it makes me light up to see Happy Hollow mentioned. I spent years taking my kids there and I love that the carousel is right by the entrance. You can make it the first and last part of your visit! Such a magical, happy place!

jannelle sanchez

Oh my gosh Tara! I grew up going to Happy Hollow and my daughter Ella now goes all the time with my motther-in-law. I’m SO happy to hear you and your daughter got to experience it :) xoxo

Leslie

If you visit near San Jose again and want to ride a carousel, make the drive to Santa Cruz to ride the 1911 Loof carousel at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. You can even grab the brass ring! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Cruz_Looff_Carousel_and_Roller_Coaster

Lauren O

I switched to a different antidepressant after taking the same one for many years; I didn’t think I needed to make a big change, really, but exploring what was possible felt worth doing. It’s been about two months since the switch, and it’s – nice to see me? I’d forgotten some of this stuff was even in there! A good moment of my summer, as dumb as it sounds, was bumping into myself.

Dana

I love this, Lauren O, and am vicariously thrilled for you. Say hi to you from me! :-D

Rachel

Tell me why I read this as antiperspirant, and was like “this is a big result from deodorant” Glad the switch went well and that you’re feeling more yourself. I had the same experience this summer changing my med. cheers to quality mental health!

Tracey

This is just the loveliest comment yet. So glad to hear such good news for you.

Margot

Mental health is THE BEST! Very happy for you!

Mariah

Lauren – That sounds more wonderful than dumb! Good for you for taking a chance and reaching for more.

Tyler

Aww love that Lauren.

Michelle Rao

My daughter got married this summer in a love filled, highly creative DIY wedding. To surprise her and her partner, I planned a flash mob dance to Crazy in Love as Beyoncé is a slam dunk at a wedding dance. I included her dad, her sister, her BFF’s parents with guest appearances from her step parents. They were completely and utterly shocked- as in hyper ventilating and bouncing with surprise. All the guests surrounded us clapping and singing. Six weeks later, it is still the talk of the wedding. We “old” folks got the party started. Their joy at our surprise was something I will never forget!!

Aly

This is so cool! You sound like an incredible mom. Love it!!!!

Jenni

Michelle, this is AWESOME.

gilli

I flew to NYC to see a reading of a musical my son wrote, it was magical! And my daughter came and spent a week with us while on a week break from residency.

Ella

I’m having the worst day of summer and, also, my life. Any epilepsy moms out there in the CoJ universe? Our four year old daughter had a terrifying seizure that our pediatric neurologist deemed “highly concerning in length” (first seizure ever to our knowledge) and I am freaking out while she’s in for a lumbar puncture. I thought, “where do kind people congregate?” And here I am. Any words of wisdom or solidarity or anything positive? I’ll take it all.

Anon Mom

Hi Ella, I’m sorry your daughter experienced an epileptic episode. My daughter started having seizures around age 6 and it was scary. I’d say this: you are her best advocate. Listen to your gut and your heart. After taking ours to ER one night, we got her evaluated, scanned, etc. We got the scans back before our meeting and I shared them with my uncle who is a radiologist because I wasn’t able to wait two more days. It was clear as day that she had something in her left temporal lobe. We met with the neurologist and he kept saying it was the right lobe. His head nurse mentioned it was the left. We mentioned it was the left. Then he pulled up the scan and looked at it and then laid blame on his head nurse without any shame. We asked follow up questions and finally he couldn’t stand it anymore and asked us, rather pointedly, “Are either of you in the medical field? You’re asking a lot of questions.” Hus and I walked out of that appointment completely flabbergasted. Got home and I immediately started calling other neurology offices to make another appointment. Dropped the first guy like a hot potato. Once you find someone you trust, they will work with you and your daughter to find the right meds and the correct dose (and whatever else) to manage it. Sending lots of strength your way.

Diana

Ella, I am so sorry to hear this! Sending healing vibes to you and your daughter.

Sarah

Sending lots of positive thoughts and prayers. You are in a tough tough moment. It won’t be for forever. Try to breathe.

Judy

My heart hurts for you Ella. You’re in my thoughts and prayers. Warm hugs to you and your little girl.

Katt

No words of wisdom, but sending kind thoughts your way, Ella!

Sally

I’m sending a hug from over here!

Rebecca

Sending you love and light, Ella. When my son was 2.5 years old, he was very sick and spent a week in the hospital because the various peds specialists couldn’t decide what was wrong. Thankfully, it was only Celiac Disease. The best advice I was given was to find a safe friend with whom you can lose it. Just go full ugly cry and rage about how unfair and awful it is with them. Do this so you can be brave for your kiddo. They need your strength and positivity because they are scared and don’t understand what is happening to them. And, again, sending you love and light and hugs from afar!

Nicole

I am not an epilepsy mom. However, my girls have a good friend who has epilepsy and also had concerning seizures ages 4-5. She’s now 8 and still brings emergency meds to every playdate even though she hasn’t had a seizure in a year and a half. I know she still has a lot of neuro appointments and scans, but she lives a very normal life. Wishing you and your little one the best and always hoping for kind and understanding medical professionals for everyone!

Megan

Ella, gosh what a scary thing to hear! I’m tearing up just thinking of it. Anything wise I can think to say sounds trite so just breathe maybe? My best friend growing up had seizures and had to take medication. Then she just.. grew out of it! Now she has a doctorate and two kids. So, hoping for a similar story for your kiddo. Sending piles of love.

Katie

I don’t have any words of advice or wisdom, but I’m so sorry you are going through this. I am sending love and tenderness out into the universe, hoping it makes its way to you.

J.A.

Ella, I’m so sorry, this sounds so scary and hard. I don’t have any wisdom unfortunately, but I’ll be thinking of you.

Lauren D

Ella, I’m a medical mom. My son is 7 and also had his first seizure when he was 4. I’m so sorry because I know how terrifying and life shifting it is. But you know this already and I’m here to tell you, you are so brave and strong and it will get easier. Realistically it took 5 months to feel like I could take a deep breath. In that time it was appts, tests and figuring out the right medication. I asked the Dr’s lots of questions, took notes, asked them to repeat the plan so I understood, asked if these were the only options (test, medication etc.). I also used those appt days to buy treats or takeout because why not? Sending you so much love, truly from a mom who has been there ❤️

Monica

I don’t personally know anything I could say to ease your worries but I’m sending you a big hug.

Debbie

Ella, I don’t have any experience with this, but just wanted to start the thread of support that I am sure is on its way! You will get through this, just keep taking deep breaths, let time do its magic thing, and you will find yourself on the other side of this, snuggling with that little girl and clear on what you need to do to keep her safe.

Louisa

Oh, love. Not an epilepsy mom, but my sister has epilepsy and it is so scary for you, I’m sure. (And my sister’s is totally managed and she’s a mom and teacher and doing great!) – Sending you positive vibes.

Casey

I’m so sorry to hear about your terrible day. My mom had epilepsy for a bit induced by a TBI, while I cannot offer advice or know what it’s like to be a mom in this position I can validate how truly terrifying it is watching a loved one have a seizure. I hope they find a solution for daughter quickly and that she has a swift recovery. Sending you love virtually.

Julie

Not an epilepsy mom but an epilepsy daughter and sending you and your family much love, hugs, and positive vibes.

Katie

I am so sorry your family is experiencing this with your daughter. I am sending you a big ol internet hug. Hoping you get some good news.

Amy

I’m so sorry your daughter and family are going through this! That sounds terrifying. My son’s boyfriend was recently diagnosed with a seizure disorder at 26 – we’ve talked about how terrible it is to watch someone you love struggle like that. Your baby – my heart! Sending you my best wishes.

Jiva

Hang in there, Ella. You and your daughter will get through this. Sending good vibes your way.

M.E.

Ella, that is overwhelming, and I am pulling for you.

Simone

Hugs to you! Whishing you and your family all the best!

HaP

No knowledge of epilepsy, but just a big hug. Crossing my fingers from Switzerland that everything will be ok!

Nicki

So sorry you are going through this Ella, it must be scary! Sending virtual hugs. I’m not an epilepsy mom, but my best friend has epilepsy (she was diagnosed as a teenager after having a seizure during a sleepover at my house – I called the ambulance and rode to the ER with her). She was told she’d likely been having these in her sleep since childhood, and she said that felt true to her – she just never realized what it was. She went on medication that quickly helped to control her seizures and they have stopped completely thanks to that. She lives a totally normal and healthy live as a busy vet and mom of two boys. I was just telling this story to my niece and goddaughter who had a seizure last month, at age 29 – completely out of the blue (while in the passenger seat of my sister’s car, which left both of them very scared and anxious). She’s still doing tests to get a diagnosis and is understandably nervous. Really hope that you both get a diagnosis quickly, along with reassurance and support about how to manage whatever it is.

Lauren

Hi Ella! No words of wisdom but sending you love and light today. I hope your sweet girl is doing well and you will receive answers soon.

Sarah Ann

Just read your note and sending you all the love and positive wishes. Your baby love has all the Internet aunties pulling for them.

Sarah M

Oh Ella – how terrifying, I’m sorry. I am thinking of you and your daughter and wishing for all the best. How lucky for your daughter that she has such a thoughtful mother who obviously will do anything to make her better.

Jop

I’m so sorry to hear this Ella. Holding you and your daughter in my heart ❤️

E.E.

I am not medical and so take this with a grain of salt… but I had a bunch of seizures from 6 months to age 3. All of them were induced by fevers (so often as a small child). My parents were so stressed and scared that they considered not having any more children. Something happened and they went away and never came back. I hope this gives you a little bit of hope. Always remember the brain is a very weird organ and ca/will change radically.

Hayley

Hi Ella, sorry not an epilepsy mum, but just saw your comment and wanted to send you masses of love. I hope the worst day of your life is passed and your daughter is ok. Xxx

Jenny by the Sea

Ella, no experience at all of this – but sending you and your daughter much love from across the pond.

Morgan

Ella I’m thinking about you and sincerely hoping your daughter is ok. Sending you as much strength as I can.

Alexa

I am not an epilepsy mom, but I have an uncommon form of epilepsy (not as in life threatening, just in triggers/how it is treated). For me, having a post-seizure routine helped a lot with making me feel less anxious. This will definitely vary from person to person, but my parents always made sure I had snacks with me, strategies for short grounding exercises or relaxing tight muscles, and would provide reassurance when I was feeling confused or scared, answering questions that might seem obvious or repetitive in a consistent and kind way. It is helpful for managing the “I feel confused/dissociated and don’t fully know why” experience post-seizure and to have such gentleness and care even when my brain felt scrambled. Also, make sure to prioritize things like water intake, exercise (check with neurologist as some activities like swimming or running may be contraindicated) , and eating balanced meals consistently and ideally at the same time each day, as well as sleep. Things like dehydration or poor sleep can make seizures seem more intense, which I didn’t fully realize when I was younger. Sometimes post seizure my sense of taste feels off, which means that sometimes a balanced meal consists of crackers and guacamole. While self care is no cure for epilepsy, it makes it much easier to live with and keeps me from thinking about seizures constantly. Best of luck to you and your daughter!

Lar

I hope you’ve been given better news since this comment, Ella! Mary-Laura Philpott’s book of essays Bomb Shelter includes her experience with her son’s epilepsy. I found it very moving, you might find it some comfort? Sending mom solidarity with the knowledge that it’s rarely as bad as our worst fears, and when it is, we still move through it. Big hugs.

Jenny

I’m sorry! I hope the experts can give you answers – but trust your gut and keep looking until you find the right ones. Medicine has so many grey areas. I hope the lumbar puncture isn’t necessary but if it is she will survive it. We are all so much stronger than we think we are. Sending you a hug.

K M

Ella I’m sorry that is happening, it sounds so scary. I don’t have experience with parenting but I’m thinking of you.

Bonnie

Oh my gosh, Ella, sending you hugs from afar. This has to be so scary for you. I don’t know what to say but just wanted you to know you’re in my mind this morning.

Pam

Oh Ella, that sounds so scary. I don’t have firsthand experience with epilepsy but I have two friends whose kids were diagnosed around that age. I know there’s medication and doctor’s visits and of course worry involved, but they are beautiful, active, vibrant kids leading healthy and happy lives. Sending you and your daughter love as you navigate this situation, and hoping you get the help and tools you need so she can thrive.

Kim

I don’t have any words of wisdom unfortunately, but I have a 4yo daughter too, and can only imagine how scary this would be. Really hope everything turns out ok for you and her <3

Whitney

Ella, I don’t have any knowledge to pass on, but am sending you and your daughter so much love. This in-between/not knowing stage is so hard and I’m hoping you get some positive news soon!

Rachel

I’m hoping you find someone! I do not have this experience but my daughter had a TBI and the pediatric neurologist was so good about answering all questions and did connect me with other parents. I wonder if you could ask there for some peer support options? I’m sending you love!

Ruth

I don’t have any special experience/knowledge of this but your daughter is so lucky to have you and it sounds like you are doing all the right things looking for answers and help. You’re not alone. Huge hug from one mom to another.

Sage

Sending a big hug. Those moments are terrifying. My daughter is type one diabetic and we had a scary night last week. We keep breathing and moving forward, take care of yourself mama. Lots of love.

Erin

I have no answers but I am virtually holding your hand in support. Should you find your family ever at CHOP, reach out, I am local and available to help.

KIMBERLY

Oh Ella, Bless You! I don’t know much about pediatric seizures, but I do know the importance of community. So hopeful you will find yours in the way of healthcare pros you can trust and other families – whether they experience seizures or not. Your instinct to reach out tells me that you are going to be ok. Be good to yourself.

Bonnie

Sending you some solidarity and support Ella. I’ve never experienced this, but can imagine how incredibly stressed and worried you are. I hope things got better over night.

Jenni

Ella, I’m so sorry that I don’t have any words of wisdom, but I am a mother. I am sending you and your daughter strength and love and hope, with all of my heart. ♥️

Julie

Oh Ella. That is really hard. Sending love and support from afar.

Zoey

Oh Ella, I am so sorry you’re going through that. That sounds so scary and overwhelming. I have no wisdom for you, but know that wherever you are I am sitting with you in spirit. I hope you get answers quickly and that they are the very best possible ones

Anna

Oh Ella, dear Ella. This sounds so incredibly hard. Your daughter is right where she needs to be – in the gentle hands of the medical professionals who will be able to find out what the best possible care is for her. I’m not an epilepsy mom and can’t offer any wisdom from that perspective, but I am a mom and a health care provider and what I can offer to your tender mama heart is that we all care so deeply. Each of the people caring for her is so invested in finding out how best to keep her safe and well. So often when it comes to discharge time I want to hug my patients and tell them I love them and I’m proud of them – I usually don’t, cause that would be weird, but it’s so true – I love each and every one. Your daughter is being cared for by people with love and concern for her and for you. You will have all these people on your side as you walk through this. The biggest of hugs sent your way.

Amanda

Dear Ella. Reading this in the morning and holding you and your daughter close to my heart. I don’t have any knowledge to share, just want you to send a virtual hug for all this uncertainty and pain. I hope that day is full of much more ease and help.

Angela

I am not a mom to a child with epilepsy but I am a mom to three kids. Some days it is so difficult to love this hard because when the scary things come up it feels like your heart may not be able to take it. But it can. I promise. I have been through so many scary things with my kids that I won’t go into here however, I can’t count how many times I have been on my knees in anguish. I sit with you with your pain and worry but I know that you and your heart can handle this. Lean into the wonderful team of doctors and experts. When I am freaking out…it always helps me to reframe my distress…that I love my child so much, and this is so hard, but I am so grateful that I get to be their mom and help carry them through the difficult times.

A.L.

Oh, Ella. No wisdom, just hugs and love and positive energy. Everyone is rooting for you and your sweet daughter.

Marie

Ella your post tugged my heart. Sending you and your family love peace and health.

Sophia

Not an epilepsy mom but my now 20 year old daughter had a seizure when she was three years old and it was terrifying! I’m sorry you are going through this. Sending virtual hugs and healing vibes to you and your daughter.

Kelli M

No words of wisdom, just solidarity. Hold on <3

ANON

That sounds so scary! I hope for good health for your family.

Liz

Ella, My son has epilepsy and I totally understand what you’re going through. I hope you get answers soon. It took some time for my son’s doctor to find the right medication for him, but he’s in a good place now and has been seizure free for over a year. Hang in there, and know that you have a lot of moms lifting you up right now.

Danielle

Ella, I’m so sorry. I’ve been there with my daughter who had her first seizure around 4. The most awful thing to witness as a parent. I was so resistant to putting her on meds but did in the end and she is now 11, off meds and hasn’t had a seizure for 4 years. Epilepsy is a mysterious condition and not having a ton of solid answers is so hard when you just want to do whatever you can to help your kiddo. Hugs to you and your little girl!! She’s lucky to have you on her team.

Hilary

Epilepsy mama here, and I’m so sorry you’re in the thick of it. For me, the first seizures were the most terrifying – it will likely only feel easier and less scary after this. My only advice is to fight for what you feel like is an accurate diagnosis – trust your mommy gut. My son had his first seizure, a grand mal (which they now call generalized seizures), at age 10. He had four or five more seizures within that first week. He had a diagnosis within 10 days (we were very lucky that his first diagnosis was the right one), and was effectively medicated right away. He never had another seizure on meds, was weaned off seizure meds two years later, and discharged by his neurologist a year after that after a 100% normal EEG (his previous EEGs being very much NOT normal). What helped me: time (it took about six months after his first seizure until I didn’t feel legitimately insane with worry), good doctors (bedside manner is soooo important), and finding other epilepsy moms (there always seems to be a friend of a friend who knows someone). You’ve got this, mama.

Rachel

As a teacher, summer is sacred. I tried hard to keep this one low key and relaxed. My 4 year old has been amped about seeing waterfalls, and since we’re in Atlanta there are lots that aren’t too far. We’ve spent the last year taking day trips here and there, but this summer a friend offered her cabin and I took my kid on our first mother-daughter solo trip and we spent a few days in north Georgia and North Carolina, and it was the BEST. Shared a bed (she was thrilled because we almost never do this at home), piddled, explored, ate good food, and saw SO MANY waterfalls. 4 year old awe is contagious.

Felicity

I’m so glad you took the time to type this out. I’m currently debating leaving my job (government, sob) and returning to the classroom. Having vacation time with my daughter is my primary reason but I’ve been debating if it’s the right move (the stress of the first year back, a new grade level, loss of salary). Reading about your summer confirmed that that’s exactly what I want. Time with these little people is fleeting and I want to soak it up!

Rachel

Oh, Felicity, thanks for sharing! You’ll be great. I absolutely love my job and having so much time with my daughter makes all the ”negatives” worth it!

Kay from Queens

Mine is the Cathedral Falls piece! I loved everything about our road trip but I am so envious about these BSB concerts!!! I was the biggest BSB fan, I swear I thought I was going to marry Brian Littrell. Lauren is right, it’s healing, somehow you get transported back in time when it felt more innocent and simpler. KTBSBPA!

Kat

Like some other folks here, it hasn’t been a great summer for us (mostly due to discovering multiple, extremely expensive problems with our home and all that entails), and I realized recently how badly the humidity impacts my mood. But! A couple weeks ago I was out late on a warm DRY night, cleaning the goat pen by lamplight and listening to Junior Kimbrough and the crickets while the goats milled around, and it was just a lovely, tiny thing that made me feel very at peace. So there’s that.

George

My daughter turned one a few weeks ago and it was so life affirming to celebrate with her grandparents, two aunties and her cousin who is a few months younger. She was a longed for child who we have IVF to thank for. Those of you facing infertility struggles, I see you and don’t give up hope 🩷

Secret

I literally found out just today that I’m pregnant. It’s a very much looked forward to event, but of course it would be on the day we have all our furniture huddled in the living room waiting for movers and me heading back to teacher in-service tomorrow. Life just going on but what a fun secret to have for now. :)

HaP

Congratulations!

Morgan

Congratulations :)

Natalie

Best summer moment- putting in my notice at my job! I worked for 15 years at a place that was increasingly taking a bit more of my soul In a bad way . I found a job that while may be a step back for me career wise , I am looking forward to a change and hopefully gaining a little more balance in my life .

Morgan

Kudos to you for your bravery and congratulations on your new opportunity!!

Ana Devine

I am SO happy for you, Natalie.

Hillary R

Tracy’s spa day and Rebecc’s annual shaving cream fight-you both made my day! Adorable!! My sister lives in CA. Now that her daughter lives and works in NYC, I see them both more often. So summer lunches under a canopy of trees or yards of ocean sand was a lovely, cozy part of this summer. So were the 18 novels I polished off from CoJ community recs!

Sarah

Is there anything better than exploring that baby’s soft face with your hands?!?!

Debby

One of the best glimmers of the summer was watching my 11 year old granddaughter interacting with her 4 year old cousin at The Rabbit Hole, a very cool children’s book museum, in Kansas City. She was kind, supportive, engaging, and just down right fun. It made my heart sing.

Saren

Wait…why am I tearing up at this coffee shop right now?? Such a sweet post. I love people.

Julie

Traveling to London with my youngest daughter (we are perfect travel buddies). I loved showing her the magic of London. My son is a flight attendant and on a layover he was able to meet us for a day. We met for breakfast in Little Venice. Walking along the canals and having breakfast on the cutest boat cafe, I knew it would be a core memory for me.

Emma

I never before thought that you can get a core memory as an adult – but of course you can! Thanks for the reminder, I’m always so focused on what’s best for the kids that I forget my own needs. London is truly magical and a great city to show you children. It sounds like you had a lovely time. Looking forward to traveling with my kids – London is def. on the list – and creating core memories for them and me.

Mariah

We spent July traveling and I was concerned that it would be exhausting – and it was – but it was also perfect. We visited my sister, my SIL, and our grandchildren and great grandsons. We were on the beach in NC, Long Island, Rhode Island, and northern California. It was all wonderful! And now we’ve had a month at home. As a newly retired teacher – I’m loving this new pace!

Jordan

This summer has been a doozie with lots of changes, big moves, and devastating goodbyes. But our new home has a pool—an impossible childhood dream of mine—and my four year old just SWAM in the DEEP end at the end of his swim lessons. The pride beaming across all of our faces was unmatched and a great reminder that we are all facing and overcoming challenges in big and small ways.

Noelle

The pleasure of flying to any European city via Amsterdam can’t be overstated. Calm, orderly, friendly, pleasant plus all the announcements are in English !

Emma

Shiphol is a wonderful airport (never thought I’d use those words together, ha!) but more importantly: Amsterdam is sooo worth a visit! This is well known in my part of the world – Scandinavia – but I thought it may not be so obvious to e.g. many Americans, as I imagine the majority of CoJ readers are.

S-TATA

Amsterdam is a lovely city and that airport is the best. It also has a grocery store in it and the train station to and from to get there is so efficient. But I know I’m gonna sound like a jaded New Yorker to say I felt like the city was an alternate cleaner more bike friendly version of Brooklyn and I didn’t feel like I was in another country. It was surprisingly very international and so much English was spoken so it felt so much like home in NYC

Sheila

One highlight for me was very randomly meeting Catherine Newman at the Boston Logan Airport where she was doing an interview and book signing! Yes, in the terminal! I got a free copy of Sandwich and took a photo with Ms. Newman, and made sure to mention that I know her also from Cup of Jo!

Nicola

What a wonderful post, I found myself smiling as I read each one. I feel I could write a small letter to each person. But I’ll stick to two. Kim B – loop earplugs before baby 2. I love the heck out of our kids. I also had no idea how noisy two children would be. Took me far too long to invest in those earplugs. And a particularly big hug to Anna as a fellow survivor of a Big Year of Grief. You’ll someday look in the rear window and think ‘I did that. I really survived that.’ Take gentle care xx

Kim

I’m taking any and all recommendations. Thanks for telling me about the earplugs!

Anna

Thank you so much, Nicola. Grief is a beast, I look forward to that day!

Allison

Am I the only one tearing up happily at the idea of five baby birds taking flight? What a glimmer!

Libbynan

My husband of 57 years has been back and forth between ICUs, rehabs, and home for the last eighteen months and things have been fraught. He is now at home in hospice care. Two weeks ago on our anniversary my daughter and her husband came by and took our dinner orders for the steakhouse where we usually celebrate. They brought us dinner, set us up in his bedroom, and put on a favorite movie to watch. The next week for my birthday my daughter took me out for lunch with my sister and my favorite cousin and her daughter. We had such a great time catching up and sharing pictures of our cats (and kids and grandchildren). We even ordered tamales to take home for my husband. So those occasions were my summer highlights and possibly the highlights for my year. Is there anything better than thoughtfulness?

Anon

This is so beautiful and heartwarming. I am glad you have a wonderful support system!

Kristen

Thinking of you, Libbynan, this sounds so hard. Lovely you’ve got such a great village around you during this time!

Amy

Libbynan, I’m so sorry you’re going through this hard time – and I’m so glad you have family and loved ones surrounding and supporting you. Sending you comfort and hugs.

Mel

Exhausted from so much work travel my husband agreed to a staycation for our family. We spent a week exploring the Twin Cities (we live just west in a suburb) with our 2 girls:9 and 5. We went to Valley Fair and our oldest got to ride all the big rides, spent a night downtown right on Nicollet: did lawn bowling at Brits Pub, went out for a dress up fancy dinner, walked the Stone Arch Bridge, and at night did a walk in our jammies at 9pm, the girls were in awe of the lights and the different vibe from our quiet wooded suburb. We also explored the Lyndale Rose Gardens, walked around Lake Harriet and picnicked. We went to the giant Candy store on our way to see the Bison at Mineopa state park and spent an afternoon at the painfully adorable New Ulm downtown. Every night (minus the downtown night at the hotel) we got to come home to our beds and our dog and wake up to our own coffee. It was the most restorative vacation we’ve ever had and my husband declared we need to make it a yearly tradition.

Angela

I lived in Minnesota from ages 5-11 and going to Valley Fair in the summers are some core memories for me! (My dad bet me a quarter I wouldn’t like the biggest roller coaster, to motivate me to conquer my feats. did but lied to get the quarter 😅). Anyway, this memory made me happy for your kiddos!

Sassafras

I love this. When my son was little, we had what we called a we-cation for a week each summer. Hours at his favorite park with a picnic, the local lazy river water park for a day, fancy lunch in a nearby small town. And one nite with no bedtime. He’s 25 now and we both enjoy sharing memories of our me-cations.

Andrea

Fellow Minnesotan delighted to see all these wonderful spots, especially the southern Minneosta gems! New Ulm and Minneopa are such great additions to the city attractions. Well planned!

Betsy

Love this so much! Staycations are so underrated. Did a mini one early this summer. Had the best time exploring the places in our city we should have visited years ago.

Heather C.

It’s been a few years since my husband and I have had any extended grown-up time alone, so it was seriously soul-replenishing to book ourselves for massages, facials, and time in the Turkish baths at Aire Chicago. It was so romantic! We whispered in candlelit corners, held hands and did a count-down to a simultaneous cold plunge, and TREAT OF TREATS, the locker room had Dyson hair dryers available so I got to give that luxurious bad boy a spin. In one blissed-out moment floating in the salt pool I thought, “I want everyone I love to be able to do this.”

Michaela

AIRE Chicago is bliss. I love that you went with your husband. I had a wonderful day there a few years ago as a treat in a time of near burn out. It is now my gold standard for a pool/spa experience.

Anon

The aire baths are fantastic! I went in October 2019 and really held onto that energy for death life the following year

Jenn P

I also saw Backstreet Boys at the Sphere this summer. I grew up in Las Vegas, so it seemed like a sign. Me and 2 of my high school best friends went and had an absolute blast scream singing our faces off. One of us lost our mom last year, and this was the first time the three of us had been together since my wedding 8 years ago. It’s terrible when life things happen, but it’s so good to know that the three of us will always be there for each other.

Julie

Yessss Carol! So glad you took yourself! Thank you Janelle for compiling these, I’ve commented aloud to myself reading each one. A beautiful read to start my day xx

jannelle sanchez

It was SO fun seeing the high moments of everyone’s summer! xo
