Have a Relaxing Weekend.

What are you up to this weekend? Freddie and I are having pizza and playing games tonight, and I’m SO excited to see the boys when they get home on Sunday. I’ve missed them so much and can’t wait to squeeze them. Hope you have a good one, and here are some links from around the web…

How to be funny at a dinner party.

My favorite shape of jeans.

Nerd alert: My dad and I thought this Connections puzzle was especially fun.

I Am a Midwestern Girl from a Movie and/or TV Show So Excited to Be Here in the Big City. Made me laugh.

“I went swimming in the Seine.” The photos are so cool!

A Chipwich ice cream cake.

Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson are the ‘it’ couple we didn’t know we needed.

Hard things are supposed to be hard. Loved this.

With summer fruit, the big question is: galette or crisp?

Would love to wear my hair like this all fall and winter.

Celine Song — of Past Lives fame — is writing a sequel to My Best Friend’s Wedding. Will you watch?

I laughed so much listening to Amy Poehler’s podcast episode with Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer.

Would you try ‘Japanese walking’? (NYTimes gift link)

Plus, three reader comments:

Says Jorie on what cute things do your kids love doing: “My kids are five, three and one. Earlier this summer, we were visiting family in the Midwest, and everyone kept commenting, ‘I can’t believe you’re starting kindergarten!’ to my five-year-old and ‘I can’t believe you’re walking!’ to my one-year-old. After the third interaction with relatives, my middle child three-year-old daughter quickly started chiming in at the end with, ‘And I can’t BELIEVE I’m THREE!’ Sometimes, you gotta gas yourself up!”

Says Emily on what cute things do your kids love doing: “I knew I was changed forever when a really good fire truck drove by, and I was alone in the car shouting, ‘Wow, look at that one go!’ Twentysomething me could not fathom noticing such a thing, let alone developing a strong affinity with certain trucks. In the words of Elphaba and Glinda, ‘I have been changed for good.’”

Says J. on how do you mother yourself: “I mother myself through the parenting advice I learned right here on Cup of Jo a decade ago: ‘just add water!’

– take a long shower
– run your wrists under cold water for the length of a full song (this is also a great trick if you feel a panic attack coming on and can be done privately!)
– slowly drink a glass of water
– sweat with a hard workout
– go on a walk as close as possible to a body of water
– run an ice cube over the back of your neck, collarbone, forearms, etc.
– let yourself cry

‘Just add water’ is up there with ‘babies be babies’ – the hymns and recitations and inside jokes of this gorgeous, sparkly, warm, welcoming, loving community that mothers one another so joyfully every day.”

Photos by Freddie ♥️😭♥️

Annie K.

Was on a family roadtrip last Friday when this published. Such a treat to a midweek Friday post. Didn’t have time to see if someone else already commented—hope they did—Freddie’s photos are so great! That one of the stars. Wow.

Joanna Goddard

he lay down in the grass to take it!

beth b

I’m sure I’m in the minority, but I thought “My Best Friend’s Wedding” was sad. I remember feeling very down leaving the theater after watching it.

Amber

I am in the same minority. Still remember how it made me feel a sense of loneliness and loss.

Alli

A little late to the party, but I’ve been holding you all dear through the weekend: – Had restless leg on Thursday; couldn’t remember the foot stretching trick so I whipped out my vibrator and had a quickie orgasm, and it worked enough to go back to sleep (thank you, CoJ readers!) – Have been playing (and winning, ha!) the chicken game since discovering it here. I like to shout “ciao!” when I send them off. But now we have 730 chickens to rescue? FML. – Air dried my hair the past 3 days; channeling my inner Joanna. That’s all for now. Love you lots, commentors + CoJ team!

Anon for Today

Aw, what a warm message! Sending love to you too, Alli! Also, your message made me think of the commenters who shared about suffering from “lightening butt” pains – turns out a quick orgasm can cure that too!

Anni

alli, how do you win the chicken game? I keep trying and trying! So proud of you :)

JessicaD

I just learned tonight (reading here!) about Pamela Anderson and Liam Neeson and shouted it down to my husband, who called me “stale bread” — how could he have heard this before me?! Also please tell me this is real! Hoping for wonderful things for each of them — they deserve it.

Colleen

stale bread! LOL, I am so incorporating that into my lingo.

Amber

Can’t say I am thrilled. I was hoping to snag him for myself…

jane

I travel quite a bit for work, but it’s always within the states. I’m going on my first month-long, international work trip in another hemisphere. Any CoJ readers have any good packing advice? Or any advice how to adjust once there?

Loulou

Hi Jane! A few suggestions as I have made some very long international trips for work: 1) if you have the freedom to do so, arrive a day or two early. This gives you a chance to acclimate before jumping right into work and if you are curious about your destination it also allows you to explore a bit before work. Also if you’re anxious like I am, it alleviates the fear that delays will prevent you from being on time for work functions. 2) I’m a firm believer in sticking to a carry on! I know this is controversial, especially for longer stays, but it allows you to avoid any situation in which your baggage could be lost (which is even worse on a work trip when you need to be prepared and dress appropriately). 3) rather than just filling your carry on with snacks (something I also do) I make sure to bring something with sustenance (a sandwich or salad). You never know whether you’ll have the time or desire to eat what the airports have to offer. 4) if you plan to sleep on the plane, bring an eye mask! There’s nothing like one open window shade to ruin your sleep prospects. Happy and safe travels to you!

LDC

Hardly earth-shattering advice but here it is anyway: Packing cubes are really helpful to organize your suitcase, especially for long trips. I always bring a plug converter, though many hotels will have you covered if you don’t have one. I also always bring something small that makes me feel more at home (e.g., a travel vial of my favorite perfume, a book I love to re-read). For jet lag, there’s an app my friends swear by (Timeshifter) – but so far what I’ve done is just try to get as much natural light as possible when I land, hydrate well, and just accept that sometimes I won’t feel great while my body is adjusting to the new time zone and I’ll need to power through those times (or take a quick nap!). I pack ibuprofen for those jet lag headaches. Sure, visit tourist sites, but I also love going to everyday places when I’m somewhere new and checking those out – grocery stores, libraries. Bon voyage!

Amrita

In addition to the good advice of others: – get a sense of what work fashion is like in the country you’re traveling to. I have worked in some countries where people definitely dress more formally than in the US and it can be uncomfortable or misperceived to be underdressed. – pack fewer foundations like blazer, skirt, pants and more tops so that you can wear multiple outfits without having so much bulk in your luggage. If they’re in a similar color family like navy black or neutral even easier. – Controversial but I have now taken the occasional check in luggage for super long trips because I am not worried about a bag getting lost (I keep a spare outfit or two in my carry-on, but don’t need to pack for the entire trip). Bonus: room to bring stuff back! – finally remember that most people are not going to care if you wear the same outfit on repeat for some reason we focus more on that in North America but in other countries I have seen people wear the same thing literally three days in a row and no one bats an eye Have fun!!

Kay

Hi Jane. It also kind of depends on where you’re going. I definitely take a converter for electric items. I check and see if I will need some cash and bring a little money to exchange when I get there if needed, though I usually am able to get by with my debit card for withdrawing in local currency or credit cards—depends on where you’re heading. I bring some protein bars for if I’m hungry and can’t deal with finding something to eat. I drink a lot of water and try not to stress if I can’t sleep—I find stressing about not being able to sleep just makes it all worse. Have fun and definitely go to outdoor markets if there are any!! Also, if you will have any free weekends, ask colleagues if there is something not to be missed to do on a weekend. When I arrived in Ethiopia, my colleagues immediately told me to make sure to go to Lalibela which was excellent advice. Have a great time!!!

Hilary

Enjoy your wonderful adventure, Jane! I’ve traveled internationally a lot for work and want to double click on some of the great advice you’ve been given: – arrive a day or two early if you can. I’ve fallen asleep at a 2pm meeting in Eastern Europe because I cut it too close and jet lag did me dirty. – Eye mask for sleeping wherever you might need (including annoyingly bright hotel rooms, darn it!) – Only packing a carry-on! I will live and die by this rule forever. I also only bring one purse and call it good. It’s a small leather cross-body bag that holds more than you’d think, including a tiny umbrella. – Bringing a fold-up Baggu bag with you everywhere! This can hold purchases when you’re on the go, books and a water bottle, or even double as a personal item for the flight home. – 2 pairs of professional shoes at minimum. I know they take up space, BUT since it’s a work trip and you’ll do a lot of exploring, I found it essential to change the pressure points on my feet. I pack the Tory Burch wedges, soft foldable Rothys flats and a pair of sneakers for long walks and work-outs. That seems to hold me and be enough variety that my feet don’t get tired from standing and being a working lady and a tourist at the same time.

gilli

Take a few smaller clear cosmetic bags instead of one big one. and organize by type ie: makeup, hair, cleansers/serums.

Kayte

In addition to what has already been said, regarding lost luggage: 1) If you are checking a bag, put a key finder/airtag in your luggage. It makes it much easier for the airline to located it for you if it does get lost. 2) If you plan to carry on your luggage, check with your airline regarding weight limitations. International carriers will often weigh your larger carry on luggage. In case they do make you check your bag at the gate, keep a key finder/airtag in your purse/backpack, so you can slip it in your luggage before you gate check it. 3) Take some pictures of your luggage before it is checked in. You can often provide the photos with the lost baggage department. Also, helpful if it’s damaged.

Jeanne

Hopefully this comment isn’t too late. Here is an article (and great comments!) by Shira Gill who traveled for a month in Europe with a carry on. It’s also helpful because she lists what she wishes she packed. https://shiragill.substack.com/p/my-biggest-packing-mistakes-from

Chandra

Love Pam Anderson and her renaissance on her own terms however cannot forget Liam openly admitting to his desire to indiscriminately murder a black person as revenge for a friend of his being assaulted by someone who also happened to be black.

PNW GRATEFUL

Wow did not know this. WTH.

Elizabeth

I’m not trying to justify his reaction or decision to bring it up, but for some context this was from interviews in 2019 and what he said was that he had that bananas response (around 1980) and then realised that it was horrible and fucked up, sought counselling and professional help, and that he was sharing that story because he wanted to be honest about the impact of toxic masculinity and underlying racism even when society seems polite on its surface. I don’t know what his views exactly are now, but it sounds like it’s something he has thought about and tried to work on in the past 45 years

Sarah

Elizabeth, thank you for sharing this context. I think we can all have intrusive, racist, hateful thoughts — and it’s all about what we do about it. Are we interested in self-study / growth / becoming better people?

Camille

Just add water. Works. Every. Time. Every. Age.

Emm

Does anybody own that Sezane scrunchie? I love it but I need a real review before pulling the trigger!

Sara B

Just coming to share this piece of wisdom my 6 year old dropped on me yesterday. We were at a beer garden and a stranger helped him reach the sink in the restroom. I said that was nice, and he said, “People help people.” Teach us all, little dude.

Kate

❤️

Ella Bou

That was one of my favorite recent Connections puzzles too! (I do it almost daily.) In general, I appreciate all the posts you’ve made on puzzles and games on this site. Also, thank you, thank you for the all of the links to helping those starving in Gaza. It was really heartening to see the vital humanitarian issue mentioned in this space. “The children are always ours, every single one of them…”

Colleen

Yes, yes, yes to the humanitarian issues discussed here.

Briana

I’ve been “Japanese walking” for years but had no idea it had a name! It just felt like a good workout that also let me enjoy seeing the trees and butterflies.

Jess

“A Good Hang with Amy Poehler” makes my half hour on my rowing machine a manageable commitment. She is a national treasure. Pamela and Liam deserve every bit of joy they are emanating. So thankful for these positive vibes right now.

Kell

I knew that hair link wasn’t going to be hair haphazardly stuffed into a knit hat, but I was still hoping it was going to be hair haphazardly stuffed into a knit hat 😂

Rachel

I always lol at your clothing recs because we have very different bodies and the things you love could not be worse for me. When I tried barrel jeans as a short curvy pear-shaped lady, I looked like a mix between one of those guys in a western who’d been on a horse for a week and was waddling across the desert on legs he couldn’t straighten and an Oompa Loompa

A J

Haha, love it! Reading this comment was a wonderful way to start my week.

Claire

LOL!! effortlessly chic, you!

Anna

I’m a curvy short pear shaped lady as well, and i freakin LOVE barrel pants!!!

Sarah

We just arrived on vacation in Croatia, and when we finally made it to a beach and our three boys stopped their endless bickering, my husband turned to me and said, “Just add water, right?” Best Cup of Jo advice ever!

Esss

Anybody seen a good foreign film lately? It’s been so long since I’ve branched out and I need some ideas.

Laura

One of my favourites is The Worst Person in the World (Norwegian). Portrait of a Lady of Fire. And The Lives of Others (Germany, 2006) is amazing. Of course, if you feel adventurous, can I recommend The Wailing? It’s super weird, super creepy, but really good.

Nigerian Girl

Flow is fantastic.

Emily Brown

If you haven’t seen Perfect Days yet, I highly recommend!

Emma O

Assuming foreign means non-English-language… It’s a couple of years old but The Eight Mountains (Le Otto Montagne) is a beautiful Italian film based on the book by Paolo Cognetti.

… SK …

This film is in English and is an Icelandic, British, Japanese co-production. It is beautiful. https://m.imdb.com/title/tt23468836/

Anne

Yes to swimming in the Seine! I went to the Bercy site, and it was hilarious. Lots of giggly and excited Parisians (yes, indeed)! And I saw little fish, magic!

Anne

Years ago, I remember learning that Pamela is Canadian and of some Finnish descent like me. I resemble my dad’s British side so I look nothing like her, but every time I see pictures of her these days I’m struck by how incredibly Finnish she looks. She looks like one of my beautiful chic Finnish relatives and she would blend in completely in Helsinki.

Sparkles

Yes, I notice this too!

Eva

I love this quote, and want to frame a small copy of it – and I just realized it’s basically the same thing as “just add water” :) — “The cure for anything is salt water: sweat, tears or the sea.”

Sarah

yes! love that quote!

Abbey

I just teared up reading this “‘Just add water’ is up there with ‘babies be babies’ – the hymns and recitations and inside jokes of this gorgeous, sparkly, warm, welcoming, loving community that mothers one another so joyfully every day.”” How beautiful!

cat

I was in paris with my 10 year old daughter and she was insistent on swimming in the seine. The weather was mediocre but we wenn anyway and it was magical. The city does a great job at making the ruver accessible and even if you dont want to go swimming you can lounge in a chair. Highly recommended!

Paula

CoJ folks – hoping someone might recommend a great apartment rental or Airbnb for Paris! 4 ladies, aiming for about $400-$500/night. 2 bedrooms. We’ve aged out of any pullout couch arrangements. Thanks and cheers to the weekend!

Vivian

Not sure what pricing is like now, but I had a great experience with Paris Perfect Rentals a couple years ago! Enjoy your trip!

Catherine

Try Paris Perfect. They have a lovely selection in various parts of Paris. I know someone who always uses them and raves about the experience.

Florrie

Please boycott Airbnb and Booking.com. They rent and profit from settlements on stolen land in the West Bank.

HMM

“Photos by Freddie” SOB !! Freddie, we love you too

Kelly

OMG FREDDIE TOOK THAT PHOTO OF THE MILKY WAY? You two are giving Liam and Pamela a run for their it-couple money!

Evenings free

Pam Anderson and Liam Neeson are you kidding me? They’re so cute! And fruit crisp.

CGinMD

That paint splatter sky photo is gorgeous. Go Freddie!

Kris

My toddler comes home to me on Sunday after a vacation with Dad, and I am so excited and can’t wait to give him so many hugs and cuddles. I am going to the beach early Saturday morning with my book and plan to take the longest walk with my feet in the sand.

Kim B

I know I am not the only one just DYING for Pamela and Liam to bebome a real life couple, am I? AM I??? I’m not even a celebrity hound, and I m not sure why (something therapy might uncover…) but this would make me so so so happy. Maybe just because she has been through a lot, (so has he) and they look so sweet and genuinely affectionate with each other, and they could both use a great partner about now and and and…surely I am not alone in this! (but if so, I will STAND ON IT!) : )

Erin

Oh, I’m 100% with you on this. They both seem like lovely humans who have grappled with STUFF and are solid and real. I get the impression that neither “needs” a partner to feel ok, but if they want to be each other’s person, boy, it would make me so happy to see. (Is that weird? I don’t usually care about celebrity relationships!)

A.E.

They are an actual couple. I think that was the point of the post?

Jess

They are a real couple, aren’t they?

Kate

I want to talk about how much we love the Pamela Anderson vibe these days. Having grown up knowing her from Baywatch and scandal sheets, she is now who I want to be when I grow up. Confidently make up free and just so gorgeous in her own skin. I adore everything I’ve seen about her recently.

Kim

Me too!

Halle

I agree! I think she’s more beautiful now than ever before!

Hillary R

I’ve been using her skincare line, Sonsie, since launch and it’s a dream. Especially the cleanser and moisturizer. Very gentle. Sales announced on IG.

Casey

That connection puzzle was so fun but why they didn’t switch the green and the blue is BEYOND my brain to comprehend.

Anon

Stop ruining amazing characters with sequels! After The Materialists this has And Just Like That written all over it.

PNW GRATEFUL

Just Like that is so bad. They all became charicatures of themselves. But I watch anyway. Ha. A show I just finished AND LOVED IS Pernille !!!!

Cynthia

Joanna, your hair would look great pulled back with a clip.

M.E.

I haven’t tried Japanese walking, but I just started Japanese sitting–Seiza–a week ago, and it’s already done wonders for my sciatica. (100% the most middle-aged comment ever.)

Meg

As a fellow middle age sciatica sufferer – I am now looking this up!

Lemon

I actually laughed out loud!…and I agree!

Kristin

Well, darn. My sciatica is so bad I have had to stop doing squats and hinged rows and deadlifts. I immediately checked out Seiza, but I have bad knees!! Maybe I’ll try with a pillow behind my knees. Thanks for the tip!

Katie

It may be good for sciatica, but seiza can be killer on the knees.

Jill

Looked this up too, found an excellent PDF (no need to download) that explains it’s benefits very thoroughly: https://www.higashihonganjiusa.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Seiza-for-beginners-revised.pdf

J K

My friend & I recently tried Japanese walking. There were many times the three min timer would go off & she’d say “Time to slow it down” & I, a fast walker in general, would say “I thought that was slow”!

caroline

You mean Freddie is a PHOTOGRAPHER too? Isn’t enough that he cooks and bakes and brings fans and has a sexy voice and bravely faces teenagers everyday to teach them history (and how to be human)? Is there no box this man hasn’t ticked? (BTW That starry sky is a stunner.)

Lia

Had this same thought, lol.

Kell

And don’t forget about his adorable dog! We need more Ranger content, please 🙏

jordan

I love ‘just add water’. another heavy hitter in my cannon is ‘nothing never happens’. this was advice given ahead of my first ethnography about how there’s always something to observe, but it has since become a self-soothing phrase about how all uncertainties resolve eventually

kirby

I am in Australia, so it is bucketing with rain and positive freezing (well ok not to American cold standards but we don’t get very cold here so I think it is freezing, there is rain and hail this morning, but no the ice doesn’t stick, it melts in a second). Anyway you have me stumped on the summer fruits. I’d never turn on the oven in summer so it is usually a question of pavlova (or the lazier Eton mess) or sorbet. However, I feel like in order to answer the question I will have to make both the Crisp and Gillette this weekend… YUM YUM. Is ‘crisp’ an American term for a crumble, or is it something more nuanced? Anyway, wow so many words when all I really want to say is I can’t wait to do the research in order to answer this one.

Jess

I think crisp and crumble are the same!

Katie

Kirby, I feel you! It’s raining a ton in Sydney, though probably warmer than where you are. May I suggest: – Cherry galette; – Stew rhubarb, a vanilla pod, juice of 1/2 an orange + lest + water + sugar in a pot, and enjoy over ice cream/yoghurt/whatever; – Apple crumble, super simple if it’s tinned apples too; – Or cinnamon scrolls, if you’re keen for a 2-dayer (Smitten Kitchen have good easy recipes) ENJOY!

Lora

Crisp and crumble are often used interchangeably in the US because they are so (deliciously) similar, but I think historically crisps had oats as part of the topping (which helped them crisp up more) whereas crumbles did not. Nowadays some crumble recipes will include oats, but the ratio of oats to flour/sugar/etc is lower than in a crisp. There are also some regional elements too. As someone who has lived in the western US states, New England, Texas, and the Midwest, the related recipes seem vary by region in terms of what would be called a crisp versus a crumble. And if you also consider the cousin to crisps and crumbles – cobblers – then it can get even more muddied. All that being said, I love the oats in a crisp!! Give me all the oats! As my husband just said, “If you don’t add oats, you’re doing it wrong.”

Anna

I live on the west coast of Canada and when I see all the very tempting summer baking projects I have to remind myself those are for people with air conditioned homes (not common here).

Anon

I’m in Melbourne and the day has been glorious. Sunny and more tomorrow, bring on Spring. Hopefully the weather improves soon for you. I’m thinking you are in Sydney.

kirby

I’m on the coast, south of Sydney… but this chat just makes me smile – I love how invested we all are, and the crisp, Gillette, crumble, cobbler comment has me grinning from ear to ear! Katie, thanks for the rhubarb tip, yummmo! Perfect weather for that!

llja

i live in canberra, and you were right when you said it’s freezing here right now!!! i am soooooo ready for spring.

Midge

https://designmom.com/recipe-easy-apple-cobbler-a-discussion-of-cobblers-crisps-crumbles/

Jill

I do not love oat crisps – I LOVE a cobbler (more of a sweet tender scone topping,[american biscuit]..)

erica

CoJ community, I need your recs! My best friend is a kindergarten teacher and will be starting at a new school this year. I would love to send her a “back-to-school” gift that isn’t cheesy or cliche, something that is thoughtful AND useful. If you have any tips/ideas, please let me know!!

Mona

You could give her an online book voucher for book lovers.

Betsy

Snacks! Favorite candies, protein bars, good dried fruit, packets of something nice to add to water, pretzel bags. Also gift cards for takeout. That first month is such a doozy and working hours just creep up. A roll of fun stickers to give students never goes amiss.

Cynthia

I’m a retired high school teacher, and I’m offering these suggestions. A tube of a nice hand cream to keep in her desk, lip Balm, her favorite candy or snacks, a package of Sharpie very fine points in a rainbow of colors. No mugs. Most of us have enough mugs to fill a gift shop.

Lori

Comfy socks or a foot scrub or soak if she’ll be on her feet all day. One of those neck collars filled with rice that you heat up in the microwave or a massage “husband”-like thingy (I got one online a few years back for under $40). A super soft pair of sweats or PJs to slip into once she gets home? What a nice friend you are!

Hilary

Former teacher here, and I STILL love receiving pretty notebooks and fun pens. Back-to-school was also hard on my body (the standing! the talking!), so maybe some tea, throat lozenges, foot scrub, etc. could make a nice little care package.

Aes

DoorDash gift card for when she inevitably comes through the door ready to collapse instead of cooking a meal!

Marisa

In our school district, we have to wear our IDs, so my idea is a very pretty lanyard for hers, if she needs to wear one.

Sarah

Send a care package to her at school. Fancy stickies, washi tape, Expo markers, something sparkly, Motrin, a stain remover pen, a really sweet note of affirmation/encouragement. At school is key, since she’ll get to show off that you love her, and you’ll catch her off guard in the best of ways.

Kate

The first six weeks of Kindergarten AND and a new school will be intense. What a great friend to provide a little extra love at this time! *A hand written note of all the reasons you think she is a great educator. *Does she spend her own money on supplies? If so, find out what school supplies she needs/wants and get the exact brand requested. Add in some fancy, colored thin pens for her. *Make dinner or things to thrown in the freezer. *Plants for the classroom! Flowers or coffee/tea delivered to her classroom. *Massage or sauna day with you! Let her talk about all of her students! *Ditto to snacks, books, and stickers.

Kate

As a former kindergarten teacher, I would have loved gift cards for coffee and takeout. The first month is so exhausting especially in kindergarten. Also maybe a massage or pedicure depending on your budget. You’re a good friend.

Paula

Massage? Gift card for fav take out? I hear so many teachers pay for their own supplies so a gift bag of things for the kiddos mixed with in with things for her like nice pens, journal, desktop calendar?

Sarah Jane

A Teachers Pay Teachers gift card and a great pair of earrings.

Andrea

K teacher here! A fresh new water bottle is always a treat! Plus good snackies to have stashed-nuts, chocolate, a few diff bars… You are a thoughtful friend!

Katherine

Lots of sweet ideas here! Just wanted to add to the lanyard suggestion—Etsy has some very cute ones that are beaded necklace styles. Regardless of style, look for a “breakaway” feature—it’s required by some districts for safety (in case it catches on something, gets grabbed by a kid, etc).

Erica

Thank you everyone for the suggestions! Can always count on you!

Gretchen

I love all these recs from current and former teachers! :D I am also a current teacher. For something little that elevates the day to day experience, I echo: — Nice hand lotion (nothing too perfume-y that could impact kids with allergies) Bigger items that would support your friend in the crazy first few months: –Gift Certificate for a massage –Gift Certificate for takeout –A pre-made dinner or two for the freezer (I would cry tears of joy if someone gave me this) For school-supply type things: –Felt tip flair pens –pretty magnets — post-it notes –expo markers (there are NEVER enough!) Flair felt tip pens

Zoe

I LOVE wearing my Lululemon crossbody bag while teaching kindergarten, comes in very handy. You could fill it with things for her (lots of ideas already) and/or also for the the school day- I always have tissues, hand sanitizer, pen/pencil, bandaids, post it notes, lip balm in there!

Sally

Is anyone else SO tired of endless, unwanted movie sequels? I know they happen because they’re an easy money-maker for studios, but it’s just so lazy, and they’re rarely good.

riye

YES. And when I hear/read “reboot” it automatically earns a massive eye roll from me.

Anna

Ted Gioia, of The Honest Broker, addresses this exact thought. https://substack.com/@tedgioia/note/c-79983478

Tricia

I am so with you on this.

june

YES. there are so many other stories that can be told instead. I just heard there is even going to be a sequel to that facebook movie. seriously?!?!!?

nene

I WANT a sequel to the facebook movie and I want to see how decisions that are leading to breaking down of democracy, exploitation of children are made. How lobbying is done. How this insanity is playing out in real time.

nene

But yes, generally agree to the sentiment about movie sequels. how lazy!

Rae

Just finished listening to the “Good Hang” episode with Andy Samberg and literally laughed out loud for most of it. For any COJ readers that love him/Brooklyn99/SNL it’s a must listen and a guaranteed mood boost! Happy weekend :)

Meg

Yes! I loved this episode. Jo, if you have not listened yet, you must!

Tovah

I gotta say, I am usually bored by the podcast format “Famous Person chats with Other Famous Person” but Amy Poehler just really nails it. Which is not really a surprise because improv and because she seems kind. But yeah I’ve been pleasantly surprised by Good Hang!

MRM

This ep of Good Hang was a delight, and not only because my older brother (and indirectly my older sisters) got a cute shout out for being a fellow “good dude with older sisters”, like Andy. ☺️ Joanna- I think your brother also probably falls into this camp!

Kate

“Photos by Freddie” made me grin from ear to ear. Love the collab!

Emily

same!!! go freddie!!!

Ellen J

Yes me too, love how that is just tucked in there

Emily

Was just coming here to say “nice photos Freddie!”

Rose

Yeah, same. You two are quite the celeb couple yourself 🥰

Amanda M

Same!!!!
