Everyday Clothes I’ve Worn a Million Times

Joanna Goddard’s Everyday Clothes I’ve Worn a Million Times

What do you wear on repeat? I would love to hear your trusty list! Here are six pieces I always reach for…

Joanna Goddard’s Everyday Clothes I’ve Worn a Million Times

First, I pull on this indoorsy sweatshirt all the time at home with my kids or at the beach with my bff. It’s oversized and comfy, and it makes me laugh.

I also love this Danish rain jacket (it’s lightweight so you don’t get sweaty) and these very comfy sneakers, pictured here on a trip with my dad.

After searching for the perfect white tee for years (decades?), I finally came across this one. The heavier-weight 100% cotton falls nicely and holds a good shape (without bunching around the waist), and the sleeves are loose. I have a little stack in my closet that I reach for year-round.

(I also like the blue, which isn’t available right now, but all the colors are great.)

Finally, every other summer, I try to track down a secondhand pair of Beatrice Valenzuela sandals and then wear them to death. They pair well with everything (dresses, skirts, jeans, shorts) and never make my feet hurt.

What about you? What’s on your list? I also am LOVING this sexy dress, and I’ve worn these shorts since high school.

P.S. My mom’s style, and the random thing I get the most compliments on.

But who makes the jeans, Jo, in the sunset pic with your dad? I’ve been searching for something like that!

Joanna Goddard

Rachel Comey — but Madewell also has a great pair!

Kristi

Love those sandals, but they look narrow. I am not exactly “wide” in shoes, but wondering how these are sized? TIA

Christina

I have bordering-on-wide feet and they do run a bit narrow/small – I sized up a full size.

stu

Jo, where is your trench from in the first pic with the plaid sleeves? Sorry if someone has already asked! I feel like i’ve seen them all over the city this year, I want one!!

Kat

I am not positive but that plaid pattern looks an awfully lot like a trench from Sézane!

TS A

It’s likely the Clyde Trench Coat from Sezane. It’s oversized.

Moira

I have it, and love it.

Mandy

It looks like one from Sezane.

stu

thank y’all! <3

My uniforms are either short sleeve wool t shirts tucked into Levi’s 501 skinnies (which are just slightly tapered, not actually skinny jeans) or cropped t shirts from Athleta or CRZ yoga over Athleta elation leggings. In the winter, I wear either uniform with a Pendleton wool cardigan or crew neck pullover. I have these two lightweight sweatshirts that I wore into the ground and haven’t found a replacement for yet, so I’m all ears if anyone has any leads: they were from j crew or factory, they were slim and slightly cropped, 100% cotton with a rougher feeling sweatshirt texture on the inside (not like the poly blend ones that are fuzzy), and they were the perfect weight for spring through fall to feel substantial enough for comfort but cool enough to not get sweaty. I wore them for so long, and one is still wearable but has holes at the seam between the arm and the cuff, and the other has terrible stubborn stains from my dog lovingly flopping her muddy paws on me. My usually very tolerant husband has forbidden me from wearing them out of the house anymore. I got a fancy sweatshirt from Nordstrom that’s *fine* but not a perfect replacement. And the one buy it for life clothing item I will aggressively try to talk anyone into is a waxed Barbour jacket. I highly recommend buying one in person from an Orvis store! Their employees are always so kind and you can bring the jacket to them for re-waxing (they send it on to Barbour but not having to figure out that whole routine myself is a very welcome thing for my overtaxed brain).

Beth

I have just one of those j crew sweatshirts and dread the day it gets worn out ! I wish they’d make them again

Emily

I think I have a similar J.Crew sweatshirt! The Everlane tee below is basically a super lightweight sweatshirt—maybe what you’re looking for? https://www.everlane.com/products/womens-premium-weight-jersey-top-black

Jewel

Ruth, I know the perfect sweatshirt for you becuase I have the same, which has holes worn through the elbows. They don’t make it any more, but the Current/Elliott The Perfect Sweatshirt circa 2015 is just what you’re looking for, if you want to buy used. The brand is now called The Great, so something like The College Sweatshirt might work new. The Perfect Sweatshirt was a hand-me-down, and designer brands are generally out of my budget so I haven’t looked into the rebrand. Good luck in your search!

Bella P.

I’m 5’4″, the scale says 160#, I have thick thighs, small boobs, a long torso, and my body shape is “me”? 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m the type of person who doesn’t particularly enjoy shopping or following trends, and when I find something I like, I buy multiples. The pieces that I’m always reaching for include: 1) Athleta Salutation Stash leggings 2) Patagonia Fleetwith Romper (please bring back the 2020/2021 version!) 3) “Pre-loved” Curator SF Cadence pants 4) an old, heather blue oversized Spiritual Gangter tee with “Grateful” on the front – I’m sure there’s a hole in one of the armpits, but it’s got that perfect cozy, soft cotton feel 5) Nike Killshot sneakers – the cream colored ones with the gum sole are 😍 6) dark wash denim jacket with a little stretch – mine’s an over decade old one from J. Crew

Phoebe

Are you me?!?! Bella, same! I’m a little taller and a litter lighter, but have the same figure–thick thighs, small boobs, and a long torso, plus some broad shoulders. I have 8 Patagonia Fleetwith Rompers and live in them (the 2018 black is my favorite!), and I have the same old, holey “Grateful” Spiritual Gangster tee LOL!!! Great taste, girlfriend!

AMK

Best shorts for curvy women? I hate the feeling of anything riding up so I’ve been wearing a lot of biking shorts and Jean Bermuda shorts but would love to explore other options. TIA!

J F

I have had good luck with jcrew factory shorts, usually up one size from pants (I am normally a 14, L, 32, and have had great luck with 16, XL, 33). It works for their chino, denim, and drawstring ones.

Nicole

I like the Madewell curvy shorts! They fit my waist but also my hips and don’t squeeze my legs. Only bummer is they’re on the shorter side so you gotta be comfortable showing a LOT of leg. I also like to thrift men’s Levi’s and turn them into cutoffs. Thy have a looser fit and straighter hips usually, so I have to wear a belt, but then I can control the length!

Ann

I live in the south, so natural fibers are essential. My go to outfit is a cotton sundress, I am on the hunt for them year round, a gauze shirt over if I need it and Birkenstock gizeh big buckle sandals. Also, cotton underwear with stretch lace edging, no elastic. Oh, and Lume full body deo in coconut around, but not in, my lady bits.

Erin

I haven’t worn these because they’re clearly a new launch (though I can highly recommend the brand) – but you guys! These jeans! Cup of Jo AND Seinfeld, in denim! Can we even handle it?? https://www.ayr.com/products/the-big-salad?variant=42452284080207

Mary

Summer: -Nordstrom Wit & Wisdom shorts (twill or jean). They fit great and have the perfect amount of stretch. – Banana Republic Factory Timeless V neck tshirts – New Balance 574’s Winter – Patagonia Pack Out Tights. Nice fit. Thicker, soft material and so comfortable. They wash well and last a long time. Patagonia has both new and used available – Same Banana Republic tshirts as summer – Hoodie or sweatshirt. I like Champion for a thicker hoodie or sweatshirt and Vuori for thinner ones. Vuori are pricy, but they wash well and the couple I’ve had for several years still look like new. – New Balance Arishi V4 shoes in black Forgot about these shorts for summer hiking – Eddie Bauer Guide Pro shorts. They are lightweight, have a little stretch, are water-repellant and super comfortable.

Lori

As someone who is big supporter of buying 2nd hand IRL but a novice at online shopping from places like Poshmark – I would so appreciate some tips on how these places work. Can you return things and if so, how hard is it? Are they pretty transparent with the condition of the items? How about sizing? How do I maximize my online “shopping” time and not go down a rabbit hole where I end up spending too much time but come out with nothing? Thanks!

Farhana

Hello Lori, I’d check the seller’s reviews before purchasing an item, and the item’s condition. To get the best deal, you’ll need to know the item’s right size/ color since it sometimes varies from store to store. For example, Joanna knows what she’s looking for in the Beatrice Valenzuela sandals, so it’ll be easier to track them down in the resale world. I hope this helps.

MGH

Hi Lori- I buy quite a bit on poshmark. To answer your questions. 1. You cannot return items because you don’t like it/it doesn’t fit. If it was grossly misrepresented, you can file a claim, and in my experience, poshmark refunds you your money and provides a label so you can return it to the seller. 2. I do find sellers to be transparent about item quality as well. 3. And you absolutely can go down a rabbit hole, but I think that’s just all apps? Other tips that may help: 1. If it’s unclear in the item description, ask. It’s good to have a written record that the seller said something was in perfect or new condition if it shows up and clearly is not. My interactions have all been very positive and people are honest about what they are selling because no one wants bad reviews. 1a. You can “add item” to a bundle to have a private conversation with the seller. (“bundle” means buying multiple items from one seller and saves you $ on shipping). 2. Measure your best fitting garments and use those as a guide. Common measurements for shirts include length and pit-to-pit or PTP, which is what it sounds like. Knowing yours is a real help when trying to determine if something will/will not fit you. 3. Look for brands you know and trust. I don’t see Posh as the place for trying new things, but I’m not a good IRL thrifter/vintage shopper, so maybe it’s great and I’m just too scared to try. 4. You can use the search bar, but there are also tons of filters, including brand, size, “my size” (which uses your saved sizes), etc. I recommend this when you are looking for something specific 5. Look at multiples of the same item across sellers to understand what is a good price. 6. Only buy things that have pics of the actual item. Lots of folks use stock photos, which is great, but make sure you see the actual item too. 7. Do not take the transaction of poshmark. If it feels weird, google it and there is a host of reddits where people will tell you what’s a scam. Taking a transaction of the app typically is. 8. I agree with the other commenter to check the seller reviews and their “about me” page. People who are scammers or icky are called out. I hope this is helps. Happy shopping <3

Ruth

This is why I love ThredUP! No haggling, returns offered on most items, clear descriptions and photos and measurements, with the option to get $ back if the condition doesn’t match.

Mariah

Lori – I most often shop on ebay. I haven’t tried Poshmark – I just can’t get the swing of it. On ebay I use the filters to only shop items that ship from the US and accept returns. I’ve had great luck and never had a problem returning things. Just thought I’d offer another option.

Lori

Thanks so much to both of you!

Greta

I also love the trick of shopping online secondhand for brands and specific items I love. I love a schmancy sweatshirt but can’t often justify the new pricetag for an item I wear to knock around with my kids. I’ve gotten fave puff-sleeve Ulla Johnson ones online secondhand for great prices and love them oh so much! My pro tip? When I’m in Nordstrom or the like and note brands I love, I jot down the sizes and brand names in my phone so I have them ready for online secondhand searches. TheRealReal is great for returns!

Caitlin

the Japanese typewriter cotton button downs from Gardenheir are superb, its crisps up nice when you iron it but does great a little rumpled. it is light enough for texas summers, and oversized just enough. i wear it weekly! Le Bon Shoppe (in general really) but the Arc pants have been in my rotation for a long time. just wish they had more sizes as im already at the Large. Ugg’s Goldenstar Hi Slide has been my chunky sandal of choice for a minute. good for my wide a** feet and surprisingly comfy.

Jewel

The comment section here is a goldmine! Thanks to all!!! What I would love to see is a post on rebuilding a wardrobe from scratch. I lost everything in a natural disaster and it sounds like others are seeking new clothes due to body changes post-partum and otherwise. Our confidence is often (at least loosely) tied to how we present ourselves, and starting over with nothing after a decade or more of curating a wardrobe that feels right is so much more challenging that I could have imagined.

Courtney

Ashley Paige talks about this on tiktok/youtube shorts! She lost her home in the LA fires earlier this year and has posted videos about how challenging it’s been to rebuild from scratch.

Amelie

Summer in Perth, Western Australia- always a block print flowy midi dress , Daughter’s of India Kyra Midi dresses are my go to. Have quite a few variations of the same cut and midi length always! Cotton, lightweight, breathable, paired with tan slides. Hair in a bun daily :) Winter- Wide leg jeans, t shirt with an oversized boyfriend cardigan and sneakers. Sometimes will swap the cardi for a trench. Have a few colour variations that I rotate. So comfortable and loose fitting :) xxxx

Jess

I always wonder about DOI dresses! They look so pretty online. What holds me back is the line across the bust. Sometimes it goes across the chest in pictures, I’d prefer it to be under! Any tips?

Rach

Hi Jess! I am pretty tall and recently ordered a similar dress (not DOI) on Etsy, and asked if they could make the skirt longer–they did and it’s perfect. Wonder if you could request a longer bust? It’s felt so special having a ✨custom✨ dress and legit it was $40 including shipping. I have to agree with the floaty dresses as I’m currently on a waistband strike.

Lemon

Summer uniform…Outdoor Voices shorts and tees. An investment but they last for years. If you live somewhere hot and humid these are so light, airy and comfortable and wash like a dream. Great for travel…quick dry. https://www.outdoorvoices.com/products/w-rectrek-4in-short-strawberry https://www.outdoorvoices.com/products/w-thinkfast-shortsleeve-brilliant-white

Michelle

Joanna, what size of the indoorsy sweatshirt do you wear? Thinking of buying one and am curious! Tx!

Elena

Does anyone follow a social media account that features someone styling around a postpartum belly? After three babies in rapid succession I have a belly that may be here to stay (our youngest is already almost 2!) and I’m trying to figure out how to dress with it. I just need some inspiration :)

Dawn

@maxeygreene is a mom of two who talks about styling around a belly. She is such a chic mom!

julia

Check out FashionVeggie. She totally does this!

Hailey

@midsizekimberlyanne is adorable and posts fun outfit reels for midsize (but also any size) women working with bellies and beyond 💗

Jess

I have pored over these comments and have about 15 tabs open looking to see what so many of these items look like! I am in a fashion rut. I have been dealing with chronic pain after a root canal and it’s been so challenging to feel comfortable in my body let alone my clothing. I typically reach for Big Buckle Birkenstock Arizonas or Hokas for shoes, Old Navy dolphin hem shorts (I wear them every summer since 2016 and they’re still kicking) and a Patagonia tank top, crew neck sweatshirt (a lot of the sweatshirts are souvenirs from places visited). I work from home and my kids sure don’t really care what I wear!

Megan

Love this post!! Rails Ellis button down in Indigo (from Poshmark, love seeing how popular buying second hand here is!!), so versatile, have worn over a swimsuit and to the office. Harper Wilde sports bras with the phone pocket in the back. Levi’s Wedgie jean. Big buckle Birks (Arizona). Zella leggings. Let me give another shout out to color analysis—makes shopping so much less painful knowing what NOT to get! The initial consult is pricey but dang my clothes shopping has plummeted after getting it last year.

Marisa

I am a full time artist, so I basically live in Lululemon align leggings and tank tops. I’ll put an oversized t shirt over them to protect my clothes, then take it off when I take a yoga break mid morning. If I’m going out, I try to wear “real” clothes. I have a pair of dark rinse Oliver Logan jeans that I love. https://oliverlogan.com/products/aberdeen-wide-leg-crop-shiver-me-timbers?variant=43808074301655

Alex

All about the Modal Muscle Tanks from Quince. At $15 a pop they are a steal…. Light weight and flowy, I have them in 4 colors and rotate with shorts as a summer uniform.

Court

It’s already 100 degrees and 1000% humidity in Austin, so I’m reaching for this perfectly loose cropped 100% cotton tank from Athleta with Patagonia Baggies or a cotton gauze or linen skirt. I’m usually more of a 10-dollar-old-navy-tank gal, but this one just fits me and my flat chest soooo well, it’s worth every penny. I’ll be watching for a sale to stock up on more! https://athleta.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=597540&vid=1&autosuggest=true&searchText=ta&position=3&results=6#pdp-page-content

Jules

Influenced!

Hope

My style is a dress with leggings and a long sleeve shirt underneath for the winter. Being in between tall and regular sizing I usually pick tall and fold over anything that is too long. I have many colors of longsleeve Gap Modern crewnecks and several pairs of Old Navy black high waisted jersey leggings. My shoes alternate between Merrell women’s Alpine 83 Sneaker Sport (stocking up when on sale) and Birkenstocks, both of which have good arch support.

Samantha K.

Anyone have any pregnancy/postpartum recs? Heading into the third trimester and struggling with getting dressed enough to feel like a human but still staying comfortable.

Katherine

I’m exactly in the same boat! I just ordered these shorts overalls from Old Navy. I have the full-length version and wear them all the time. I love that they provide support without pressing on my belly. https://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=771538002&cid=1185228&pcid=1185228&vid=1

Katie

I’m using rent the runway at 7 mo. postpartum and have been since my third trimester. I know it’s not the most cost effective and the dry cleaning isn’t great, but honestly it makes me feel more put together and confident in this phase of life. I was getting frustrated with buying different sizes and having size shock and I just decided to say screw it and I feel like renting the sizes I actually need right now in this moment feels better mentally and obviously so much more comfortable! I also have been enjoying trying different silhouettes that I wouldn’t regularly wear like Hill House dresses that fit and feel really good right now.

Mandy

@Samantha K. It is more of an investment but you can wear almost everything she sells during pregnancy, after, and for years to come. Elizabeth Suzann. Her clothes are amazing and made me feel so good post birth even though my body was wrecked. Check her out. It’s the only brand I felt comfort during and after my pregnancy with my daughter.

Rachel

I started using Nuuly around 7 months pregnant and still enjoying it 5 month pp. it was really nice in the winter time to rent coats instead of buying, and I still like it now as my body has been fluctuating in weight and composition. Otherwise I did lots of old navy in early pregnancy last summer for flowy linen stuff

Sarah P

When I was pregnant the second time around, I rented clothes. I think I used Stitch Fix? And I absolutely loved it. At the time, you could keep what you liked for as long as you wanted and you just sent back what you didn’t like, and you always had an option to buy. It was so worth it! Also, wishing you the very best!

Jules

I just had a baby in August and postpartum in the fall. Lived in aerie Henleys, align leggings (that I bought first trimester and fit great even still) and their mama maternity nursing bra. I didn’t even nurse very long but it was so comfortable.

Meredith

I loved these Storq overalls in my third trimester. They made me feel halfway put together and are super soft and comfortable.

Ella

Here to plug Aerie! The price point is right, they have some really delightful fabrics (the super chill fabric is a perfect Negative Underwear dupe), and it’s easy to create what I call a ‘rinse and repeat’ outfit. I was super pregnant in a desert climate and I lived in the Good Day button down with their ribbed bralettes + a loose short. Alternatively, at a higher price point, lululemon’s BeCalm Bermuda short + Align Bra + Hold Tight Crewneck tank or Jersey SS Training Shirt is an excellent combination.

Ruth

I’m 6 months postpartum and my hot take is to buy actual maternity stuff for third tri! I’m sure it varies for others but so much of the stuff I tried to wear in pregnancy that was from my pre-pregnancy wardrobe got hopelessly stretched out and no longer fits right. My third tri staples were bike shorts from CRZ yoga’s maternity line, a pair of Abercrombie maternity jeans and some of their maternity t shirts, maternity joggers from Target, one Hatch dress, and a few dresses from Nordstrom and Athleta that aren’t maternity but I got them for pregnancy. Oh and cropped swingy long sleeves from girlfriend collective were great for AC.

R.S.

In the summer, I live in the North Face Aphrodite crop pant. Comfy adjustable waistband, fabric keeps me cool, and I think they’re cute with everything. I get them secondhand on Poshmark. I also love my Brooks Adrenaline sneakers – no breaking-in period, ever! The cozy sweatshirt I wear almost daily in cooler weather is the L. L. Bean Quilted Full Zip Sweatshirt. It’s the perfect amount of cozy and cute (there’s a quarter zip option too).

Beth

I ordered the Aphrodite crop pant on Poshmark based on your recommendation and I’ll be going back to get more. Thank you. It’s just what I need for an upcoming hiking trip

Katie

I love imagining everyone in their go to outfits cooking their go to dinners from last post. Now we just needs descriptions of everyone’s kitchen and cooking playlist to make the image complete. I love these peeks into other people’s lives. I live in my Birkenstocks, Costco joggers and rotate soft cotton T-shirts that say things like Plant mom, Let’s root for each other (with a picture of turnips and beets) and Vote written with banned books and a rainbow, etc. It’s definitely not stylish, but I feel comfortable and I like that my shirts express my values.

Sasha in MT

I love this imagined beauty so much too, Katie. And your style sounds amazing.

Frances Eleanor

$54. For a tee shirt is out of my league

casey

Amen

Em

Does anyone have non-sweatpant stretchy pants they love? I have endometriosis and can go from flat belly to seemingly pregnant within the hour, so pants with buttons/no stretch are a no for me. I’ve been living in Vuori sweats (so comfy!) but would love options that don’t look like loungewear… thanks!!

Emily

My absolute go-to pants right now are the Orvis Explorer Wide-Leg pants. They look nice enough for work but are comfy enough to wear on car rides. They work pretty well for me with belly fluxuations, so maybe they are an option for you? I have them in 4 colors and will be getting the light blue if/when they go on sale again! https://www.orvis.com/product/explorer-tencel-wide-leg-pants/3KX41918.html? I also have the Aerie Homebody Jogger in black that are a little more casual, but I still feel comfortable wearing them in public and not feeling like I have sweats on. I think you can find them on Poshmark.

Sasha in MT

Super soft, wash up great, pockets, wide legged, easy waist bands, good quality. Decently cool in the heat too.

Emm

How about wide leg linen pants with an elastic waist? I have a pair from Old Navy and another from Quince that I love. If you don’t like linen, I also have the wide leg Villa pants from Vuori and they’re super comfy and I think, more chic than sweatpants. (They have an elastic waist too).

R.S.

Em, if you have a JC Penney near you, I recommend these pants: https://www.jcpenney.com/p/st-johns-bay-womens-loose-fit-wide-leg-trouser/ppr5008469053?pTmplType=regular&catId=SearchResults&searchTerm=st+johns+bay+pants&productGridView=medium&urlState=brand%3Dst.%2Bjohn%2527s%2Bbay&badge=onlyatjcp%7Cpetite I have a sensitive body that does not like being squeezed, and these pants are perfect! Stretchy waistband that does not dig in, check. Multiple color options, check. Cute style, check. Reasonable price, check! I recently wore them with a striped and cropped “beach sweater” and a big nautical necklace charm swarm and felt very cute.

Julia B.

@Emily Johnson Those are really cute! Thanks for sharing. I love the pale blue.

Betty

I’m currently wearing elastic waist linen pants from Old Navy and feel like I’m in pajamas. Are these ok for business casual offices?

Peach

Lands End Starfish pants, which come in a variety of cuts. They have quite a few other options, too. For example, I have a pair of “active” pants from many years ago that are even more convincing as professional pants when styled for the office.

Rachel

When worn with a nice top, these cotton pants from Uniqlo look much smarter than they feel! I have them in black and they just look like lightweight chinos but feel like PJ pants! https://www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/products/E466026-000/00?gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=18136599808&gbraid=0AAAAADM0H6jvWIL-u_xC9P6SDIJMD2CYW&gclid=CjwKCAjw3f_BBhAPEiwAaA3K5BWQN4e-FLZg13o4fc0moQWcAthZ9oMFAgWYHYVBim0GTKhNdPfzxxoCVzoQAvD_BwE&colorDisplayCode=09&sizeDisplayCode=003

Two pants I love for WFH that aren’t athleisure are these slouch barrel: https://www.gapfactory.com/browse/product.do?pid=732888001&vid=1&searchText=supersoft+barrel#pdp-page-content And these basic chinos from Old Navy technically have a button but the back is elastic so they feel super easy and comfy. I love that they look a little neater and less puffy from the front with all the comfort of pull on pants. https://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=857281102&vid=1&searchText=ogc%20chino#pdp-page-content

Brooke J

They’re pricy, but I have two pairs that are 4 and 5 years old and only now are starting to show their age. I wear them all the time spring to fall – they are so comfortable, but I get a ton of compliments on how they look , too. Perfect amount of stretch – I know I sound crazy, but I love these! https://freeflyapparel.com/products/womens-breeze-pull-on-jogger-storm-cloud?_pos=9&_sid=88054b5ab&_ss=r

Try these Halara pants, I have their flare jeans and they are more comfortable than sweats and very stretchy because of the crossover waist. These look more like a pants version: https://thehalara.com/products/high-waisted-plicated-side-pocket-wide-leg-solid-palazzo-waffle-casual-pants?pmui=10.1.collection.list.7.joggers&pmuih=joggers&requestId=0400bfab-9fb2-466d-8c8f-42877701765e&_gl=1*1ps8hgy*_up*MQ..*_gs*MQ..&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIxLHFrp3djQMVxS6tBh0LHBtcEAAYASAAEgIzavD_BwE&gbraid=0AAAAAB_7KRHPJWpFivdmGyz8qrUZHFNEb&variant=3043576

Saltwater Sandals now and forever!

Margaret

me too

janine

I have a really adorable Clare V bag that I got secondhand (I *hope* it’s a legit one, but I can’t be entirely sure) that is covered with cute illustrations of dogs. I have never in my life gotten so many compliments. It’s far and away the most-complimented accessory/clothing item I have ever owned.

Sharon M

I also love (love, love) t-shirts from Le Bon Shoppe…I just ordered 2 more! And I do have 2 pair of those sandals, but haven’t worn them for a while. Tkees flip flops are my go to sandals…for over 15 years! I have a Free People Giant sweatshirt that I wear ONLY in the house…not suitable for the public!

janine

Agreed! Le Bon Shoppe t-shirts are great. My only caveat is that I had a vibrant green one, and I got a stain on it and when I tried to use stain remover on it, it also removed the color on the shirt, so be careful with laundering the ones that come in vibrant colors!

Gretchen

I love when a clothing item becomes a favorite. The hard thing while shopping is it can be so hard to predict what you’ll wear again and again. Some of my well-loved items are: –A cream cotton ribbed cardigan from Target I bought in 2020. I wear it at least once a week, have had it repaired, and then bought a second one used via poshmark. — Socksmith’s Bamboo crew socks (breathable, perfect weight and fit) — Ariat Waterproof Chelsea Boots for the winter — Duckfeet Fisherman Sandals for the summer (purchased via poshmark, but would also buy full price now that I know how much I love them)

Chris

This Old Navy tee shirt is a relaxed fit with a thicker cotton. It’s been my favorite tee for the past few years. I’m 5’10 but wear a Regular but it does come in Tall. Highly recommend if you want a boxy/slouchy with the perfect thickness! https://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=856625002&cid=1035712&pcid=1035712&vid=1&nav=hamnav%253AWomen%253AWomen%E2%80%99s+Tops%253AT-shirts+%2526+Tanks

Genevieve

I’ve got 3 pairs in different colours of the Hallie crossover sandals from Office (UK). I wore the white leather pair for my wedding last year! They are so comfy, and have the tiniest heel and go with all outfits

Ann

Shoes: Rothy’s Mary Jane’s, Sorel Joan of Arc waterproof boots, Altra Lone Peak trail runners Bottoms: Everlane Cheeky jeans, Uniqlo jeggings, Michael Stars ruched skirt Tops: Gap and Jcrew striped tees, Uniqlo heat tech tees, Quince cashmere sweaters Dresses/jumpsuits: Everlane cashmere midi dress, Spanx jumpsuit (so comfy! S”so polished!)

OMG YES on the Altra Lone Peak sneakers. The natural toe box! The grippy, flexible sole! The lovely colors! The washing machine capacity!

Kell

Altra have ruined me for any other shoes. I literally don’t wear anything else (oh, except crocs and Birkenstocks, 😂)

Lykke

Oops, I missed the brief about *everyday* clothes. Then it’s the camis and linen coords listed above. And a few T shirt dresses of varying lengths, usually from COS. :)

Lauren

Big bud press work pants!!! They are life changing for me (that little bit of elastic in the back… Heaven!) and have gotten me wearing color again. I have green, blue, and orange ones and I do monochromatic or tonal outfits with them and I’ve never gotten so many compliments! Comfier than jeans but so much fun. Besides those, I love my white canvas oversized chore coat I got on eBay. A very stylish person in the Japantown mall complimented it recently and asked where it was from and being able to say it was a random 90s vintage coat from eBay was thrilling. I’m still high from that entire interaction.

Britt

Oo never heard of big bud press but it looks so fun!!

Jen

I think life stress and confusion at how perimenopause is changing my body has led to a lot of overshopping this year but I wear and love -button downs, vintage, new, etc -tank or tee under (sometimes plain blue, pink, boxy sometimes a bitchy little replica Loewe logo tanks, no I wasn’t going tonpay 500 for a tank top yes I wanted that energy) -jeans or cotton elastic waist pants (did we talk about perimenopause body) -or shorts – summer: Teva voyas; winter: any sneaker -bag it’s all or nothing: cotton tote (New Yorker , London strand, my kids school) or a preloved Gucci Diana with the bamboo handle orrrrr a replica Margaux (I said it) Dresses: in the heat, its caftans and Birkenstocks I feel it’s giving : cosmopolitan bohemian in minor crisis but still enjoying life And I’m here for that!

Ann

Absolutely love all of this…here for it! So spunky and so true!

Martha

Soft knit wide leg pants by Flutter…I own several pairs…super comfortable and flattering. I discovered Lesley Evers brand about a year ago…have since bought a dress, a skirt, and several T’s. ( which I wear several times a week!) ..colorful, fun prints, and a female owned and operated small business. The dress has a whimsical but not cutsie mushroom print….I get multiple compliments whenever I wear it…from strangers even! I love big baggy cardgans for lounging around the house….and doubles as a robe! And for shoes, I love my Danskos…clogs in the winter and autumns, sandals in the summer….Stylish and they don’t scream “comfort shoe!”

Mary

I love this post! Tops: LL Bean seersucker short-sleeve blue/white striped blouse and their super soft cotton scoop neck tees (purchased on a trip to Maine with my bestie last year and holding up splendidly ever since!!). Have also been on a lucky streak of great J Crew Factory blouses (the military-ish style ones with the buttons on the shoulder). Pants: I have no loyalties here Socks: +1 for Bombas for everyday/casual/athletic wear. I’m a physician, so at work I wear Sockwell knee-high compression socks. I’ve had about half of my pairs since I was a medical student and they continue to feel good as new! Shoes: I’ve become a machine washable shoe convert and I will NEVER GO BACK!!!!! I wear Allbirds white sneakers, Rothy’s (leopard print Point flats and black Mary Jane’s) for clinic days, and white plastic Arizona Birks have become my go-to sandal. Pajamas: Hanna Andersson striped sets! They are perfect.

Hil

So boring – in the winter its always black pants and a black v-neck long sleeved shirt. In the summer jean shorts with either a black or white shirt. I like shoes far more than clothes…

Anne

Gap cheeky straight high rise jeans, black crewneck T-shirt and Birkenstocks is my go-to uniform.

Brenda

This comment section is juicy and funny. Enjoying immensely. Sixes: 1) Madewell high-waisted jeans always bought second-hand 2) A cotton or modal black mini dress, not too tight 3) An army/utility-style jacket with this cool little rectangle rainbow above one pocket 4) Madewell vneck tshirts in black or gray 5) Studded black ankle boots 6) A wool wide-brimmed hat

Margaret

I highly recommend buying things like madewell jeans on ebay. You can set up a saved search for the style & size and you’ll get an email when a new one is posted.

Caitlin

@margaret apps like Beni and Gem are also good for scrubbing multiple resell sites for styles you like!

Liz

As we move into summer, outside of work i live in adidas firebird shorts, concert tees (i decided to support my favorite artists with what I like to call a merch purch), and birkenstock arizonas. I’ll throw on an alex mill cardigan (bring back the cup of jo reading cardigan!!!!!) if it’s chilly, or i add a long sleeve tee. Loooove a denim button down with snaps worn open over anything, j crew makes a great one. Levi’s ribcage straight ankle jeans forever.

casey

I definitely oppose the idea of stockpiling certain shirts or multiple colors of an item. We as a society are obssessed with having more….bigger houses, bigger closets, 10+ pairs of shoes, enough white T-shirts so you don’t have to do laundry, etc. I am trying to not buy any clothes and only keep the clothes I have that are functional for multiple occasions — it needs to work for 2/4 (work, date night, casual, fancy) but almost all of my clothes work for all 4 things. I highly recommend people to buy used if you need to get something, but most purchases are not necessary IMO. Buy less yall!

Carrie

If you find something that works for you — a perfect t-shirt, pants, etc. — purchasing multiples may actually lead to FEWER purchases in the future when stains/rips/age occur and you seek to find the perfect replacement. I don’t think anyone is advocating a stack of shirts so that you don’t have to do laundry. But if you know you’re going to be wearing a white t-shirt five out of seven times you get dressed for the next few months/years then having a stack of them makes sense.

casey

I have one white T-shirt I wear constantly — I just wash it :)

Joanna Goddard

I have four because I do wash once a week and wear one every day! :) also for travel.

jane

I’m with Carrie. I’ll occasionally come across something I love and I’ll wear to death. I wish I would have bought at least one or two extra so that I’d have for when that happened. I’m currently on the market for a new perfect pair of black pima pants.

Anna

It is really hard for me to find clothes that fit my body, so if I find something that fits really well and is being worn multiple times per week, I then buy multiples (second hand if possible). This approach definitely reduces my overall purchases.

Nicole

Yeah, I agree with Carrie. If you have seen me in the summer anytime in the past 8 years, there is a 99% chance I was wearing a Lululmeon Cool Racerback tank with Old Navy running shorts. Do I always look like I’m about to go for a run? Yes! Am I cool and comfortable? Also YES! I have 5 of the tanks and probably 8 pairs of the shorts, in different colors. They don’t make the tanks anymore, so I have bought most of them used on Mercari. Since they are pretty much all I wear in the summer for both casual use and work outs, I think having a bunch of the same item in different colors makes perfect sense. And, that has stopped me from buying other clothes I don’t need/wouldn’t wear as often.

Jackie

Growing in the ’70s in a small town made it very difficult to find shoes to fit my narrow no arches feet. I wore my Keds laced as tightly as possible, or heavily padded shoes-1 pair at the start of a new school year. It’s a pure joy and pleasure to find brands that can accommodate me, so when something fits it’s like finding the perfect jeans! I purchase mutiples. My favorites currently are Mayari Birks (4 pair), Buckley shearling Birks (4), Sperry boat shoes, older Coach boat shoes and flip flops that I have had for years (or find on Ebay when they start to wear out). I rotate them all and take wonderful care so they last “foreverish”.

Cate

I have advance cable knit grey sweater that was a Christmas present I’m not sure how many Christmases ago. It is so snuggly and warm. Winter spring summer or fall I always reach for it when I get chilly! Splurged on white Tees from La ligne a few summers ago. Great quality cotton . They have been bleached many times and still look good, and they just fit and I always feel ready to meet the world in them! A black vintage Cole Haan cross body bag made of woven leather a la Bottega Veneta that fools everyone ! I used to rely on jcrew cotton pants, but they only have draw string waists or camp pocket styles this year so I have ordered from Everlane and am hoping for the best.My tummy just looks awful in a drawstring-super saggy! I need structure in my pants. Finally my three quarter length Nike running pants with the small hole near the left knee. So soft and I swear they make me run faster!

erica

My go-to’s: Sezane “brut sexy” denim or Quince European linen pants Ozma raw silk tees/tanks/dresses A vintage baseball cap for days when I/m schlepping around and don’t want to fuss with my hair Beatrice Valenzuela sandals or Veja sneakers Clare V woven messenger bag or grande fanny I wear a pretty neutral color palette (hence, lots of Ozma!), so I can mix & match and then have fun with pops of color through accessories (earrings, socks, purses)

Lis

Really liking these tees from Gap. Relaxed. Heavy weight. Not really cropped but not long either. Forgiving. https://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=500100012 I also have some old linen shirts from Gap that have lasted years. I have tried linen shirts from more expensive brands that aren’t as soft or flattering.

After a lifetime of loving and working in fashion and clothing design, I have realized that my life currently (older Mom to a tween girl, semi retired, still doing free lance from home) keeps me in a certain mode, and honestly am so grateful that it works! On the daily I pull on Jockey cotton stretch slim bootleg pants (about 36$), Felina modal cotton stretch tanks, bought in packs of 2, mostly black, for 35$, Birkenstocks (one of 3 pair I’ve had FOREVER) or New Balance sneaks, and 365 days a year, I twist a long oblong scarf around my neck with the ends long in front, for a little “camouflage” in the mid section. Scarves, of anything from wool to cotton to rayon are where i get a little color, a little dash, (and neck protection, it ages faster than you might realize in the sun) and throw on a tangle of gold or silver bangles. This takes me everywhere from school drop, to a lunch, to a workout or yoga, to a meeting, to a school event, without thinking AT ALL! Spring and Summer I add some knee length printed skirts for knocking around town, All of the above is worn until holes start to show up, it all lasts surprisingly well, and my increasingly fragile ability to focus is spared thinking about “what to wear?”. If I need to get fancy, I can do that with skirts & dresses leftover from a former life, some kitten heeled low slingbacks and a perennial little black or gold bag. Late in life “Mom brain” is no joke, and this spares me from losing what I still have left!

Jess

I pictured each item as I read! I love how you said a tangle of bracelets :) Do you live somewhere warm (wondering what you wear over the tank tops!). You sound perfectly lovely.

Ali

I am in my button down shirt era: cotton, linen, silk, and chambray. Stripes, mixed prints, solids, and a couple of sheers. Always oversized, always breezy, worn Danish-style over literally any and every kind of bottoms. I am on my third month of Nuuly and it’s reallllllyyyyyy fun for the kind of uniform dressing I’m doing this year!

Sasha in MT

What does Danish style mean? Thank you :)

Dawn

Ali, Same! I wear a button down every day! Do you have a favorite brand? I made a list of my favorites here, but I’m always searching for a new perfect button down. https://benable.com/Melaniedawn/best-oversized-button-down-shirts-cd

Josy

Same! I only started recently and love the Tomboy and Chlo styles from Sezane as well as Alex Mill.

Joanna Goddard

this is danish style! a gift link to big salad (then scroll down): https://joannagoddard.substack.com/p/88e44c4c-9691-469a-863e-f8e08f69ba31?postPreview=paid&updated=2025-06-05T11%3A28%3A35.794Z&audience=only_paid&free_preview=false&freemail= basically: * very oversized shirt, so the back of the shirt hits at the bottom of your bum * worn completely untucked all around * unbutton top and bottom buttons, so there are only a couple buttons buttoned in the middle of the shirt * washed and air dried, so the fabric is slightly relaxed, even a little wrinkled hope this helps! xo

Megan

Nuuly ftw! Rented this one recently, it was great, esp as a cover up: https://www.nuuly.com/rent/products/sloane-oversized-striped-shirt?color=038

Ann

I wore this tee today. I bought 2 in early spring from Nordstrom rack and I thought I’m going to wear this every day if I can. It’s so light and a flattering cut. https://splendid.com/products/faye-crewneck-stripe-tee

Stacey

Semi-related to this post…what shorts do everyone love? I’ve been searching for a decent pair of shorts for perhaps my entire life? Requirements are: not tight, not synthetic material, do not slowly ride up into my crotch and butt crack while I walk, and long enough for me not to be constantly worried if my ass is hanging out (and long enough to not glue my legs to whatever surface I sit on). Do these exist? I don’t even need to look cute, I just need to be comfortable when it’s a million degrees out.

Kylie

Ten outta ten recommend these from Athleta – https://athleta.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=851045082&vid=1&tid=atpl000084&kwid=1&ap=7&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22304698785&gbraid=0AAAAAD_AT8voXbAkR_sMPmeH2SyaDVlXS&gclid=Cj0KCQjwuvrBBhDcARIsAKRrkjcTJA8BZMawxqAga4oiDDtuY36idQ4lJW0jyifWjNNuoQ3-SbPrkpoaAqSaEALw_wcB#pdp-page-content

Aurore

I love the paperbag linen shorts from Quince.

Claire

I do not like shorts, but I love these Le Bon Shoppe basketball shorts: https://lebonshoppe.com/collections/flared-basketball-shorts

Beth

Linen shorts would be my suggestion to fit those specs. There are tons of styles and brands to choose from!

Hilary

I just thrifted some J. Crew linen shorts, and they fit your requirements! I’m sure they still sell them in stores, but I’ve seen a ton on Poshmark and elsewhere.

Allison

Everlane A Line shorts are it! I have shorts eating thighs and these do not ride up! Plus the shape is fun and different from regular cut offs. Highly recommend!

Jordan

These are my requirements too! Last year target had a drawstring linen 4’ short that was so good I bought it in 4 colors. Not sure if they’re bringing it back this year

Laurie

This might be what you’re looking for! https://www.everlane.com/products/womens-easy-modern-chino-short-canvas

Mary

Levi’s are the GOAT for denim shorts that meet all your requirements! But if denim is too heavyweight for summer where you are, I also love the IDeology (Macy’s brand) athletic shorts, they are synthetic so not 100% what you’re looking for, but they feel really nice and are light and breathable. May be worth at least trying a pair to see what you think!

becca

Linen shorts for the win! If you are open to a blend, Old Navy has great ones. I also like J. Crew and J. Crew Factory but they are a bit pricier. I found tons on ebay and poshmark. I like short shorts, but depending on how tall you are, I think these brands sell ones that are long enough to avoid the leg-glue situation.

diana

This may not help, but do you sew or know anyone who does? I finally gave up searching a few years ago and found a go-to pattern: elastic waist, pockets, I use cotton or linen & cut the length longer (to my knees, don’t like them too short); I’ve made plaid, floral, and lots of white because they go with everything. An easy pattern that sews up quick & are made to order. Not sure if this is helpful, but an idea!

Milou

For me the Ann Mashburn track shorts are the holy grail. The Liberty fabric is cute and lightweight and I wear them with everything from concert tee’s to knit blazers – with Air Force 1’s, No. 6 clogs or Docs. Docs

Kristi

Here for this. I like the Everlane Easy Short – https://www.everlane.com/products/womens-easy-modern-chino-short-black.

Lar

When I tell you I have searched for exactly these requirements… These have been an absolute winner for me, and other women have seen me wearing them, asked for the link and happily purchased. The elasticated waistband makes them comfy, they’re long enough to bend over for kids and prevent hot summer chafe, and they don’t look super daggy. https://cereslife.com/billie-pleat-front-short/1401088-01.html?dwvar_1401088-01_color=1401088-01&cgid=denim-shorts&originalPid=1401088-01#start=5&sz=60

Jovita

I loved (and lived in) linen shorts from Uniqlo this past summer – highly recommend!

Cat

I bought last season’s version of these (they had a few more pockets) and I wear them ALL summer long. Don’t know how I lived without them. I think old navy has similar styles too. https://www.madewell.com/p/womens/clothing/shorts/denim-shorts/short-shorts/denim-pull-on-shorts-in-marnie-wash/NU203/?ccode=DM7857

Gretchen

I have these Fat Face shorts from last year that fit your description! They are longer than most pull on shorts so my thighs don’t stick to surfaces :) If they no longer have your size here, maybe a resale cit like poshmark does. https://www.fatface.com/us/en/style/su284733/b83462

Emily

I like these Jungmaven shorts. They’ve a bit of stretch, elastic in the back, mid rise and mid-thigh, come in neutrals AND bright colours, and I rode my bike in them all of last summer. They’ve yet to get the dreaded threadbare patch on the inner thighs that shorts I bike in seem to develop. https://jungmaven.com/products/hemp-short-venice-sale-colors

Lisa h

Me too, to all of your requirements! Maybe different from you though, I’m in my 60’s, 5’8, 160ish. I like these, https://www.garnethill.com/coastal-linen-shorts-26-8211-7-22-inseam/618865?offers_sku=50456%20SAGE%20L&SourceCode=DGW52B&utm_source=Google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=ACQ+PLA+Apparel&utm_content=ACQ+PLA+Apparel+Pants&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=976598610&gbraid=0AAAAAD3LCpJW5joZ88QmelK-DAbqBL-m6&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI4ZCcxpXYjQMVMD5ECB3b3zVwEAQYASABEgL_vPD_BwE Found mine on eBay. Very nice quality fabric and construction. Love the 7” inseam. I made my own denim shorts by buying a used pair of my favorite jeans on eBay, then following a tutorial to cut them to my preferred length. No thigh rub, long enough to sit and have the tops of my thighs covered by fabric, just the right size. That’s it!

Stacey

omg y’all are the BEST! I’m so excited to sort through all these recs.

Wog

they’re synthetic but otherwise meet all your requirements and they are not uncomfortable in the swamp that is Houston in the summer. I’m 6’1 and they’re long enough for me! I’ve been wearing the same pair for 5_+ years-wearing them today! https://global.llbean.com/llb/shop/120739.html?CORECRD=true

Kaylie

Most of my clothing is thrifted, but I like linen, stripes, a chore coat, a wide-leg pant, and a jumpsuit. I do treat myself to a linen dress from Linenfox every summer. My favorite style is a shapeless trapeze-style dress that they no longer make, but thankfully I’ve been able to email a special request in and they’ll accommodate! I’ve been wearing the same pair of chartreuse Chacos for 3 summers now, but I think it’s time for a pair of Saltwater Sandals now that they have a style with more padding at the bottom. Clothing was really hard for me growing up, either because we didn’t have any money or I was fighting to conceal some part of my body I was self conscious about. It’s a marvel and joy now that I have a closet full of stuff I love and a body I feel neutral-to-confident in.

Jess

Linenfox, so cute! Never heard of it before.

Eva

~** Post requesssssst **~ I would love love love a roundup of PETITE-focused good/decent-quality brands. The big brands have *such* limited options (if any), and the few petite-focused brands I have found lean a little too biz-casual or basic/neutral for my tastes. Yes, hemming pants is easy—altering a dress or top is not so straightforward. Where can a 5’2″ gal find some cute floral tops and casual fit-and-flares in my size (and style prefs)?! Please and thankyousomuch <3 BACK ME UP FELLOW SHORTIES <3

nadeem

WITH YOU FELLOW SHORTIE!!! esp affordable brands

Vish

Yes me too! Smol ones unite!

Ramona

Yes! I would love to find clothes for my 5’ 2” self!

Hilary

Oh man, fellow shorty here backing you up SO HARD!! Life is especially rough out there for curvy petites. Finding clothing when you’re 5′ 2″ AND have a D-size chest is hard. I love to thrift since I feel less bad about tailoring and chopping something up. Putting in a special request for petite joggers! I’m dying for cute joggers that are high quality and will withstand a lot of wash and wear. Impossible to tailor – most joggers puddle round my ankles and hemming them would eliminate the cute cuff make them… just pants. Argh!

Anna

I just bought a pair of cropped pants from Loup and they fit perfectly!

ishbee

Agree 100%!! Here are my two recs: – the Short Story subscription box: game changer If you are updating multiple pieces – Boden if you like their style (quite distinct and not for everyone)

Martha

Love the idea…petite plus sized too!

Christen

I can’t recommend online thrifting enough. Everything is what you are looking for when you can search from bed, and there are several sites in a variety of price points. Aside from undergarments I’m years into not buying new and love it so much! I love fashion but don’t really care what’s “in” so much as what makes me happy now that I’ve hit 40.

Sarah

Yes! I’m five feet tall and have no idea where to look for clothes!

JPG

Hi Eva, I wish I had an answer for you instead of the very same question. The hardest clothing item for me to find is a pair of jeans, preferably Levi straight leg, normal waist, petite. I don’t know if they even make a petite jean anymore, or anyone that does. When you are 5′ 2″ petite clothing is a must. It is not just for length. The whole construction of the garment works so much better. Hope you (we) get some answers. The only shop I know of is Talbots and their clothing is not especially casual.

Sarah

Yes, please!! Some of the long skirts and dresses, for example, just don’t translate well for me at a 5″ tall..

Charlotte

Hi Eva, this made me giggle „back me up fellow shorties“ :) I will also back you up, a fellow largie :) whoot whoot

Lar

Yes to help for us shorter girls! Have you tried Boden? They do a true petite, so it’s not just shorter lengths but the whole design altered for a smaller body.

Sar

Thank youuu! I feel like there used to be a COJ contributor who spoke of petite clothing – was it Stella? – since then, I haven’t noticed much attention to our cause anywhere, on any site. I live in Canada, so I imagine that there are more options elsewhere. I don’t want to shop online at the only options I can afford, the Gap family of brands; we deserve to save the money and resources of shopping in person! I usually fit the largest children’s sizes, so I tend to stick with that. I you actually want to look like an adult, the options dwindle significantly… BACK US UP FELLOW SHORTIES <3

Patty

YES, PLEASE!!!

Emily

YES TO THIS!!! Proud member of club petite (5′ 2″ over here). Have figured out how to make it work across many facets of clothing life but always seeking recommendations. Especially with jumpsuits (i.e., the challenge of all challenges).

Lou

At 5’1 I support this request! However I would also note that the blog extra petite (Jean Wang) has great inspo at relatively good price points. Jean also does a great job of doing detailed reviews and showing the same item styled a variety of ways. Cup of Jo should invite her to post 😀

Julie

@Eva I am also 5’2″ and feel this so much/so resonate with the alterations challenges! Not sure if this is helpful, but a snippet of my saved searches– For dresses and skirts that aren’t just beige/black/cream, I have loved Wray NYC (they are sadly closing at the end of the month, but their closing sale has been amazing) and Mara Hoffman (also now closed, but lots available secondhand on Noihsaf/TRR/eBay). For slips and underlayers, my high-end go-to is Marjolaine, whose slips are proportioned fairly well for petites (we also deserve to be able to buy flowy, floaty things that don’t drag!) and whose Archives sales are quarterly and excellent; and my day-to-day is the Vermont Country Store, where you can get cotton slips that have the old-fashioned “snip to fit” tiers, so you can cut them down if needed, no need for a tailor. For fit and flares, I find that Anthropologie’s Colette pants are cut well for petites (though I hate the patch pocket size, which is useless for carrying anything except a single dainty key and a stick of gum)–potentially worth it to try on a pair in store and then just set a search for them on resale sites (Anthro releases so many colors and prints in the Colette line each year that there are a million available secondhand, often for less than $30). Vintage Armani slacks are weirdly also great in this category, and so much cheaper than you might expect ($30-50), usually in great natural fabrics and with good construction, which makes them easier to hem or take in, even in trickier areas like the hips or thighs (or so my tailor has told me when I’ve brought them in in the past!). For fun tops, I’ve found both vintage Ann Taylor and Eileen Fisher to be strangely great for fun but still office-ready tops, and Staud (sometimes TRR will get big lots of Staud between seasons) has great prints and their tops are cut for shorter torsos. For jeans, I actually love vintage Levi’s juniors jeans, which I feel like are cut appropriately for petites; and vintage 901s are my holy grail as someone who is petite but also has hips (they were a version of the 501 that was designed in the 90s as “501s for women”; putting aside the toxic gender essentialism of it all, I do find that the 901s are cut better for petites, with room for my hips while still nipping in at the waist/tapering correctly at the knee and the hem hitting just below my ankle bone). For coats, I find that MUJI is great for petite-friendly casual coats (trenches, light rain jackets, chore coats); and then Theory (again, so much available secondhand!) or Max Mara (if I’m able to shop secondhand in Japan or Europe) are always what I look for on racks or on eBay when I’m looking for longer woolen coats; I think they both do a great job with textiles (I look for as close to 100% wool and a heavy drape, which I find makes the fabric sit more closely to the body, which avoids the “child wearing dad’s coat” effect that I don’t love about some big wool coats/also keeps me warmer!). Theory has a petite line, but even their regular lines are cut on the shorter side; and a lot of Max Mara coats have positive ease through the body but cocooning a little at the bottom, which I like (I feel like lots of petite clothing has very little architectural interest, so I’ll take it where I can get it!). Again, lots available on TRR/etsy/eBay/etc. Also would highly recommend Japanese eBay, because there is so much good tailoring for petites: vintage Yamamoto, Issey Miyake, etc. (though more challenging now with de minimis).

Eva

I feel so seen <3 prob doesn't help that I don't follow trends (i likes what i likes) so that adds to the barriers. thanks for all the recs for those who shared—excited to check them out! jo + team—still welcome your profesh insights ;)

Mandy

@Eva Try these. I am 5’0 and weigh 115 lbs. These are my go to brands that I keep going back to because of the fit. Elizabeth Suzann, Tradland Clothing, Levis (26 inseam), Alex Mill for tops, Buck Mason, BR petites, Everland ankle denim, Naadam for sweaters, and Eileen Fisher. I also have had great luck with Sezane for jackets. None of it is particularly cheap but I found that I spent far less money on clothing once I found a clothing that really worked for me.

Sarah

SAME! Please! I’m 5 feet and about 90 pounds. I can fit into kids clothes but want to look sophisticated and go for higher quality. To bring it back to the topic of the post, when I do find something I like that fits, I wear it FOREVER and it becomes my uniform. Everything can be tailored at the dry cleaners! Even things you think can’t be done, they can do! That is how I cope.

Courtney

I love this topic so much and cant wait to read everyone’s every day faves! Some of my favorite things that I’ve worn a million times and will continue to are: lululemon swift speed high rise 28″ leggings! They are the BEST for running, hiking, strength training ect! The are compressive and comfy! Pricey but I can wear a pair for yeas and they are like new! My Patagonia Prairie Dawn Parka – the coziest winter coat and it doesnt crinkle! I wear it so much in the fall/winter/spring! LC by Lauren Conrad long sleeve shirts from Kohls Sonoma cognac tote Bag with pocket – seriously so cute, looks higher end than it is, can carry everything i need (laptop, waterbottle, wallet) and i dont have to worry if it tears or gets a stain! Toms black alpargata shoes are such an easy go to shoe! Madewell – The perfect vintage jean!! (not wide leg – i’m a millennial… lololol) Target Women’s Everyday Soft Medium Support Longline Sports Bra – All In Motion – so comfy!! Can use for running or lower impact activities.

Jocelyn

Oh my goodness yes please! Boxy fit shirts on my 5’1″ frame just make me look like an actual box not to mention middi dresses that fit like maxi dresses! I’m so tired of only being able to shop at Banana Republic or Loft for clothes

J F

I realized last summer that my preferred formula for getting dressed has been the same since middle school (taking out those 20 something years when it was all trends). Jeans (wide leg from Old Navy) or linen pants (also wide leg, also ON), striped or graphic tee, denim jacket/shirt or cotton sweater (probably a cardigan). Flat sneakers or sandals on repeat.

Midge

This is fun to think about after decades of trying to craft a classic uniform. Pants: Madewell Emerson everything & J. Crew jeans. Shirts: J. Crew tees in cotton and linen, Gap/Old Navy gigantic linen button downs, LL Bean cotton sweaters. Shoes: Chuck Taylor’s, Birks, Blundstones, clogs and ballet flats. Every single day: Tiffany bean earrings from 2003, a charm bracelet, and a Nordgreen watch. Everything in navy, black, white, touches of red and olive and ballerina pink. It has taken me so long to get here, but I finally feel like I’ve got it down (and a job to match, so I can wear the same thing all day long).

That (having a list like that, and probably exactly like that!) is what I aspire to…I feel like it will weirdly make me feel like I have my shit together even when everything else says it is most definitely not.

Julie

do you mean Madewell Emmett?

Arianna

I hope this is OK to ask. Is there a way to be notified when a new post is published? I know about the Big Salad feed, but it’s not what I’m looking for.

jenny

I believe they post every day except weekends. I just check everyday.

Emily

you can use an RSS reader like feedly.

Tracey G

I just made like it’s 2009 and re-installed Feedly. Am loving it. Algorithm be gone!!

I find myself always wearing my wrinkle gauze shirts in a variety of solid colors (mostly from Aerie), my black sporty skort from Costco (perfect for youth sports mom life), black flare workout leggings from Abercrombie, a oversized light wash denim jacket, and my leopard print cropped Colette pants from Anthro that are surprisingly versatile.

Patty

So the cropped Colette pants are a popular iteration right now, Jcrew has “slim sailor pants”, ( I have 3 colors) and yesterday I got the same style at the Gap. The moral of the story, you can get the same silhouette and style at better pricing. Also, I’m 5’2″ and they work for me.

MERINO. JOGGERS. your life will be changed forever!! i convinced my partner to buy them at REI and then realized during a mushroom trip that *I* was the one who really wanted permission to buy myself merino pants, and then, my friends, I did. the ones i have are called the crush pants by icebreaker, and you can usually get them on sale. i have worn them in the winter in new england and the rainforest in peru and everywhere in between. sooooooOooooo worth the cost. as my partner says, “they make me feel like kanye west.” (in fancy rapper way, all everything else kanye aside)

Elizabeth

This is a 10/10 comment and has convinced me to get merino joggers

Emm

hahahaha I’m obsessed that the mushrooms spoke to you and they said….. *buy wool pants*

Erin

nadia

I believe I found the perfect summer button up shirt. I have a few white and 6-7 other ones. It is 100% cotton, light and breezy, and comes out of the machine looking great to put on a hanger. I always feel put together wearing one. Everlane silky- cotton top https://www.everlane.com/products/womens-silky-cttn-relaxed-shirt-optic-white

Katie

Thank you for this, I’ve been looking for a summer one!

tara

Gosh, my #1 worn item might be my Lands End quarter-zip fleeces, which I wear as a top in the winter or as an outside layer on cool nights/mornings in the summer. I have multiple colors now. Some of my standards for PNW summers. I like pockets, since I don’t like carrying a bag :) – Zella dress with drawstring waist and pockets – “Day out” is current similar. – The North Face Aphrodite capris – I’m short, so these hit me right above the ankle. I have them in two sizes, so I have a slim fit and a baggy. (Looks like the current style is a little different, ymmv) – Yogalicious capris – in plum. Again, they hit me like 7/8 leggings. – I also live in a thrifted knit skirt (Zumiez! lol) and loose drawstring utility shorts – Chaco sandals – Native shoes – like canvas sneakers, but stain/stink-resistant – The North Face sun hoodie – lightweight, sun protection without the heat – LL Bean windbreaker with zipper pockets – Lands End supima cotton scoop neck – In navy (aka, my version of The White T-Shirt) It’s a great “dressy tee”. Most of my tops are random thrift finds, which is tough when I find something I really like. Such as: a cotton v-neck tee from GAP, a loose scoop-neck from Patagonia, and a magical tank with built-in bra that wicks and doesn’t collect odor from Danskin. I’ve looked for a replacement/second and can’t find anything like it!

R.S.

Seconding the North Face Aphrodite capris! Truly the best pants – great for walking, hiking, lounging, everything!

I recently (as in 2 days ago) realized I need to start shopping and dressing for the post-Covid life I actually live now, instead of constantly buying way too corporate/dressy clothes. So I recently wandered off to Madewell and discovered their curvy fit jeans (heaven!) and long linen skirts. Now I find I’m reaching for a pair of wide or barrel leg jeans and t-shirt or jean top to knot up over them. Depending on my work day, I dress the fit up with jewelry. I finally feel like I’m finding my post-divorce, post-covid fashion groove!

KS

Curvy fit Madewell jeans are everything!

Michaela

As soon as rainy season passes in the PNW, I am living in my Birkenstocks. I have stockpiled a collection of Megafleece crewneck sweatshirts from Outdoor Voices thanks to Poshmark. I toss them on for brisk walks, or after a sweaty spin class. They’re mostly wool so they wick moisture and keep me warm without getting damp and boggy. Every time I find a new color in my size for a good price, I snag it.

Grace

I love the Quince cotton boyfriend crew sweater. It hits JUST right at the hip and feels lux. I’m all about bright colors this summer. The print on this Adidas tee always cheers me up.
