Four Fun Things

My bff and style icon Georgie was wearing sparkly jellies the other day, and it got me wondering: what shoes will you be wearing this summer? I’ve worn these all winter, but I’m not sure what my sandal plan is. Tell me your thoughts!

creamy white chicken chili

The other day, our friends Rob and Kath invited us over and made creamy white chicken chili. Toppings included rice, sour cream, cheddar cheese, scallions, avocado, lime, and crushed-up tortilla chips. (Is there anything crushed-up chips don’t make better?) “This soup is good for a dinner party because it’s not fussy to make,” Rob told me. I’m thinking of making round two this weekend.

thigh society

My friends have raved about these slip shorts for years (our contributor Kelsey wore them in her week of outfits) for preventing thigh chafe and wicking away sweat. The shorts, of course, are great for working out, running errands, or layering under a sweatshirt for that Princess Diana look. But I’m planning to wear them under summer dresses so I can feel blissfully free on adventures, versus sitting uncomfortably at picnics or trying to keep my knees together on bike rides. The cargo version has pockets (!), but on hot days, I’ll be pulling on their cooling pair.

Alexandra Tolstoy’s English cottage

Finally, how lovely is this children’s bedroom in Alexandra Tolstoy’s English cottage? My kids would be thrilled to squish into a room with overnight guests. This part of the interview — about keeping a house looking the same — was very sweet, too: “I rehung two pictures the other day and my children were aghast,” she laughs. “Every picture, every little bit, has stayed in its place over the years. I realized what a point of stability it was for them.”

What small things have you been enjoying lately?

P.S. More fun things, and an ice-cream sandwich taste test.

Does anyone know where the little girl’s sweater is from?

Joanna Goddard

i’ll ask her mom!

Marie

This is off-topic, but there was a comments thread that discussed in detail how to keep white sneakers white. People had great recommendations (as per usual), but I can’t remember which post it was about. Anyone remember?

jennifer

I don’t remember the post exactly but I remember a lot of folks use Magic Erasers

Emily

Love the idea of the slip shorts for under dresses (brings back the middle school shorts under skirt school uniform vibe) but would anyone actually wear that specific pair on their own? They look completely see through! I don’t need the general public seeing my butt in that much definition!

WhitMc

Agreed, and also begs the question of underwear choice?

Shauna

Meeting my oldest friend for a long overdue catch up at the farmers market tonight, lilacs that are heavy in bloom in Toronto right now, my partner filling my gas tank on Sunday night, and buying black double strap sandals that look way more $ than they were ($50 CAD) and they have a cushioned bed to boot! For anyone looking for sharp looking “leather” slides that won’t break the bank, the sandals are Reef’s Vista Sandal.

Mina

Chunky sandals for summer! https://radicalyes.com.au/products/arkestra-2-0-fisherman-sandal-in-green-leather?variant=41554063589543&currency=AUD&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=16718373018&gclid=Cj0KCQjwxdXBBhDEARIsAAUkP6hr7M7mynarmcU29uzayUMqjB47ij1rPPVMZNPu-QLsy3X4iOYchT8aAlL2EALw_wcB

So timely, I was just tossing and turning last night thinking about packing for my 3-week trip to the US this summer (first time taking my kid back since 2021). I’m planning to pack flip flops for the pool, a pair of Mexican sling back huaraches, converse and regular hiking sneakers. But I’m wondering if I won’t even want to wear the converse? Should I swap for another pair of sandals??

Marie

Where in the US are you going?

Anon

Georgie Week of Outfits??

Leslye Thornton

I love my Thigh Society slip shorts! Under summer skirts & dresses – perfect.

Our 2 little furry girls just got their hot weather haircuts, OH MY GOSH, they are so so pretty! Just little mixed mutts, but 1 looks like a tiny white deer, and the other looks like a tiny beige muppet. We forgot how beautiful they were under all that winter fur. A new jasmine for the balcony, we had a dead one sitting there for 2 years. 2 YEARS! :( And watching the 2025 Chelsea flower show on Britbox from London, dreaming of attending it someday with my bestie who moved there. i miss her so much. And you guys, you guys with all the sandals, summer thigh solutions, your stories, your memories, gives me such joy. Thank you so much everybody. <3

Erin Z

“MONT BELL SANDALS!,” she screamed from the mountaintops! https://www.montbell.com/us/en/products/detail/1129476?fo=1

Cheryl

Cool sandals. Are they squishy enough to wear around the house as house slippers? My heels need a lot of love and my hard floors are killing my feet.

Sarah

Hi, Joanna! For sandals, they’re a bit on the pricier side but Ancient Greek Sandals makes some beautiful styles and they’re all hand made in Greece.

India

Also they’re super good quality!! I had a pair for years and years and years. When they finally were unrepairable I went back and bought the exact same ones

Lori

Anyone tried Taos shoes? I’m kind of coveting these…https://sp-cloud.kp.org/:f:/r/sites/IHIAdvancedPatientSafety-WestCoast/Shared%20Documents/Faculty%20Planning/2025%20AST%20Program/2025%20Safety%20Framework%20and%20SMS?csf=1&web=1&e=0Al0oR

Anya

Hi Lori. I wore Taos shoes some years ago; very comfortable and light. Your link leads to a Kaiser Permanente; could be an error. :)

Jennifer

Yes! I have a pair that I bought two summers ago and wore when walking all over Italy (2023) and Austria (2024). They were so comfortable and sturdy, and they’re still in good shape. Thinking of getting another style for this summer! https://taosfootwear.com/products/the-show

LKB

While I love the idea of shorts under a dress (and have many skorts that I love), it undermines the whole freedom of a dress: no waistband. When it’s hot–and it gets HOT here in Idaho–that’s the last thing I want! I wear a dress so that I feel basically naked (but you know, not). And honestly, although I try to be careful about how I’m sitting around people, I also kind of don’t care. Regarding sandals: I’m so envious of everyone! The freedom to choose a style to just wear and show off! At 44, I’ve decided that style isn’t worth sacrificing support and comfort. I love how my legs look in heels, but I think about my feet for every second until they come off. I now have Birkenstock clogs (cold), Birkenstock Mayaris (warm), Keen Newports (active warm), and Altras (running/hiking). And that’s it. My feet are always comfy, but man, these conversations make me feel old.

Danielle

Same on the footwear! I’ve been eyeing all kinds of fun sandals, but my feet truly love my Altras and wide Birkenstocks. I am waiting on a pair of Chacos (I am 100% from the PNW!), which may be my daily active sandal — we’ll see! But yeah, I have to choose comfort over cute for my feet.

Margot

I hear you, I hear you! But what if feeling old wasn’t necessarily a bad thing? Like, when I was younger, I hobbled around in cute uncomfortable shoes, but DAMN. I am so much smarter now and I can walk for miles!!!!

Joy B

I’ve been looking at the loeffler Randall jellies w rhinestones every day for the last 3 months lol, I think they’ll make me smile every time I look down at my feet! And as a new mom, wouldn’t they be so cute w a button down and shorts or breezy shift dress? SIGH! I just need to click *order*

Lauren

Do it, you deserve fun summer shoes!

Hannah

Ok I love the idea of bike shorts in summer, but that is a yeast situation waiting to happen. Am I an outlier here???

Katie S.

cotton undies should help!

Kaitlin J

I hear what you’re saying! You would probably really love a pair of wool boxers or wool biker shorts. Wool is our friend! <3

Lane

I’ve worn them for years and never had an issue with them. Just make sure to wear breathable cotton undies beneath the shorts! They truly make a huge difference with a dress, in preventing chafing, or sticking to seats when it’s hot as blue blazes outside.

Rachel

Evelyn Bobbie has a super thin comfortable pair with a cotton gusset so best of all worlds! https://evelynbobbie.com/products/slip-short

Sasha in MT

I don’t wear underwear, ever, and I wear several kinds of bike shorts. Athletic ones for hiking, more cotton blend for under dresses, and ones made specifically for under dresses (jockey, 100% synthetic), and I’ve never had a yeast issue. Or any other issue. I definitely wouldn’t recommend doubling up on undies + shorts. That just sounds hot and uncomfortable and unnecessary. But you do you!

Adri

Exactly! I have a couple of pairs of thigh society shorts and I can’t wear them, unless it’s cold out. I’m going to try a pair of the cotton/modal ones. 🤞🏻

May

A sandals’ wardrobe is fun, something sparkly (rhinestones a plus) , hiking, dressy, gladiator, rain (no slick footbed), pastel lavender, blue and/or yellow, and everyday go to thong style.

Abbe

Adidas Originals Adilette sandals. Not the comfort slides, not the aqua slides, not any other iteration of the slides Adidas now has. Just this one that I’ve been wearing since high school: https://www.adidas.com/us/adilette-slides/280647.html These sandals are pure summer. Living in Minnesota, we spend most of the year trying to keep warm, so when we hit June my wardrobe totally shifts and becomes all color and poolside casual. Which I find myself referring to as my off-duty lifeguard aesthetic. They check a lot of boxes: 1) Inexpensive, 2) Last for years, 3) Have some arch in the footbed, 4) Can get wet, 5) Feel like something from the 90s that you can still come by in the same form, and 6) Come in lots of great colors that usually vibrantly complement what you’re wearing. (Sometimes you have to do a little searching to find the different colors, but they’re out there. I found some great brand new white ones with green stripes on Ebay.) They’re just sandals, but they give me a jolt of summer happiness every time I wear them.

Ruth

Birkenstocks allllll summer!

Loren

I have been wearing these under my skirts for many years. I love that they’re loose and that they are half cotton. They’re very cool in the summer and absorb perspiration. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VKMVQXC/ref=syn_sd_onsite_desktop_0?ie=UTF8&pd_rd_plhdr=t&aref=LK1AGXwjx4&th=1&psc=1

Nancy

If you like them that much…I would buy another pair to have when current ones wear out…Munro is going out of business I read somewhere.

Nancy

Sorry comment was supposed to go under Munro sandal post…do not see any where to move/edit it.

Sarah

I bought these last year and they’re honestly so comfortable. I’m looking forward to getting another year of use out of them! https://www.nordstrom.com/s/munro-pisces-sandal-women/8363508?origin=coordinating-8363508-0-1-PDP_1_PERSO_NMM-recbot-vertex_recs_ymal_v2&recs_placement=PDP_1_PERSO_NMM&recs_strategy=vertex_recs_ymal_v2&recs_source=recbot&recs_page_type=product&recs_seed=3395135&color=WHITE&size=6.5

Peach

Korks Jerricks, strappy leather sandal, low profile. I bought them last year and will definitely get another year or two out of them (in my climate, sandals really are only summer attire). They kept my flat feet with wide toe box very happy! No break in period; I walked for miles in them in the city. They are not an all-terrain sandal.

Jen

I got these a while ago & I get compliments every time I wear them. The red is a really fun color & they’re so comfy! https://www.dsw.com/product/hush-puppies-scout-sandal/573027?activeColor=640

UlaL

I discovered slip shorts/underwear a couple years ago and bought a small stock from Uniqlo. I swear by them as they remain in a position, they do not roll, a perfect lenght, you can wash them over and over, and they do not break your budget. I highly recommend them. Was considering buying them as a gift to girlfriends. https://www.uniqlo.com/us/en/products/E469682-000/00?colorDisplayCode=09&sizeDisplayCode=004

Jane

Was excited by this as I need a more affordable entry into the slip shorts world, but the reviews are wildly conflicting, with many saying they’ve changed and are now lousy compared to the old design…sounds like you might also have gotten in on the older model? The search continues!

Chris

Enjoying…this past Saturday was the first farmers’ market of the season! I left with an empty wallet and bags overflowing with tons of herbs in pots, kale, asparagus, mushrooms and a beautiful baguette.

kim

Have you even been to the farmer’s market if you don’t leave with bread haha

Robin

I just bought a sparkly version of these Bosabo sandals from gravity pope (https://www.gravitypope.com/collections/bosabo/products/bosabo-055-noi). I love them, sparkly and super comfy for my wide-ish feet, like birks but with more cushioning and slimmer line. And bonus they’re ethically made in France in a small factory with local materials.

Jen

My feet no longer like birks, and I have been searching for a replacement. I was excited when I saw this post bc I knew it would have the answer, and it’s these!! Thank you for sharing!!!

jennifer

I just bought these Sorel platform sandals and am super excited. I might be a little late to the game on this style but I’m still pumped: https://www.nordstrom.com/s/sorel-dayspring-platform-sandal-women/7681865?breadcrumb=Home%2FWomen%2FShoes%2FSandals&color=242&origin=category-personalizedsort&utm_channel=low_nd_affiliates_influencer&utm_content=&utm_term=116548&utm_source=impact&utm_medium=affiliate_influencer&utm_campaign=LTK&irclickid=w20QOsziSxycUn-Ryb0P%3A0MgUksTiuUEeydDSU0&irgwc=1

I have been enjoying: eating and drinking beer in the garden, in unexpectedly warm sunshine…walking around south London and deciding which parts I can live in…the sound of parakeets in the trees…taking the Tube and realising how much better it is these days…appreciating all the green spaces in the city. Very uplifting.

Phoebe

Shoe help request! I have low volume feet, where my feet slide around inside most shoes even on the tightest lacing/strap settings. AI has pointed me to barefoot or zero drop options, such as Vivobarefoot and Zeazoo. Has anyone here with low volume feet tried barefoot sandals, or found another unicorn sandal that they love? Thanks in advance!

Kimberly

Once you go to barefoot shoes, you’ll never go back! I’m always surprised there hadn’t been any post about barefoot shoes on CofJ. Try Anya’s Reviews to get an idea of which shoes will work for your low volume feet. My low volume feet have loved sandals made by Belenka, Unshoes, and Shapen because they’re fully adjustable (do keep in mind that barefoot shoes are an adjustment if you’re used to wearing rigid shoes with a thick sole).

Lauren

Have you tried Teva Voya Infinity sandals? They’re comfy and easy to dress up/down, but the reason I think they’d work for you is that you can pull all the strings to get them on VERY tightly. I feel confident you could get a snug fit.

melissa

I have never heard of a “low volume foot” but I have the same issues. Googled it and yes my foot is low volume too! I struggle so much with finding shoes that fit. Sandals with adjustable straps like Birkenstocks (in narrow) are great. Plus I just got these from Madewell and they actually fit + so comfy! https://www.madewell.com/p/womens/shoes/flats-loafers/ballet-flats/the-remy-mary-jane-espadrille-in-woven-leather/NV815/?ccode=BR0129

Olivia

Phoebe, I feel your pain! My feet are narrow, long, and low volume. I’d recommend Earth Runners or Tevas Original Universal sandals. Those are the only sandals I’ve ever had that don’t flop awkwardly on my feet. (And barefoot shoes are amazing once your feet adapt to them!! My ankle strength and overall balance have improved drastically since switching to some zero drop barefoot options.)

Nicky

You might look at Earth Runners or Shamma Sandals (especially their Trailstar model). Both of those are adjustable at several points and can be tightened down a ton. For fancier, you could look at Belenka or maybe Crupon. Someone else mentioned Anya’s Reviews – definitely check out her barefoot shoe finder! You can put in length/width/volume/shape and it will tell you what shoes are the best match for your feet.

Stacey

I know this isn’t the sexiest suggestion but Orthofeet brand has some nice walking sandals and they come with inserts to help you customise the fit.

Pamela

You should try the Steve Madden Mona sandals. Less expensive than the Dioract sandals. I have been wearing them in gold leather for two years and I love them.

Amy

Re: barefoot/zero drop shoes – I’ve been a big fan of Lems for about ten years now, ever since I started developing bunions by my pinky toes in my late twenties. Love their Primal 2 low-profile runners/sneakers and their waterproof leather Chelsea boots – a necessity in the rainy PNW. My very wide toes love the generous toe box of their widest soles.

Janet

Al the cool colorful sneakers are so fun! These are my go-to for jeans, shorts and dresses. Gola has tons of options!

Cathy

I just bought these, and they should be arriving today! I wish it were sunnier out so I could wear them someplace. They checked all the boxes for being comfy and squishy, vegan, and somewhat chic-looking. https://www.keenfootwear.com/products/womens-elle-backstrap-sandal-black

Anon Mom

I’m on my second pair of these. I love them soooooo much!

Julie

I have a pair of the Steve Madden Dina sandal in both tan and gold, and I love pairing Sketchers Go-lite boat shoes with a dress. I wore them all through Paris and Amsterdam last year, they were so comfy.

Suz

My look of the summer is a long, sleeveless, mandarin collar, A-line rayon jersey Eileen Fisher dress (ebay FTW!), a pair of “slim” black Tevas, and big fun earrings. Effortless, and feels SO easy on my skidding-into-menopause body!

Courtney

GEORGIE IS A STYLE ICON. Unrelated — did the therapy post from the other day disappear? I went to read the comments later and couldn’t find it.

Joanna Goddard

yes we got some feedback about the company we were working with that made us pull the post while we looked more into it. xoxo

Courtney

oh wow, you guys are the best. thanks for explaining <3.

Sarah

Do the thigh society shorts really not ride up in the legs or roll down at the waist? I’m tempted to try them, but not a fan of their no return policy. mini slip shorts that I’ve tried unfortunately roll up or down!

Janie

hi Sarah! I have a few pairs and I haven’t had any problems with rolling or riding. I have the cooling version– they are very thin (there’s no way you could wear them as actual shorts even in a dark color) which might be why they stay put. I definitely like thigh society’s shorts more than any others I’ve tried.

Mollie

As they get older and the material breaks down, they do ride up/roll down a little bit. But the cooling ones are amazing and I’ve learned to buy longer ones and that helps (12inch versus 9 inch).

Heather

2nd what Janie said – I love them and they don’t roll but fair warning, they offer no real compression (in case you’re looking for that). And agreed… way too thin to ever wear on their own or as a workout short.

Sharon M

Every year for a very long time I have bought a new pair of Tkees flip flops. I have had other sandals and other styles of Tkees, but the classic black patent flip flops are my jam! Warning…there is absolutely no support, but luckily my feet don’t mind!

Cy.

I used to wear these too ,I love their minimalist vibe and that they are leather. They have absolutely no support, so I can’t wear them anymore

Amanda

Must comment on slip shorts – they are not in principle a bad idea but they also can be a hot solution under summer dresses. If they let you not worry about sitting primly, go for it. If they are steal the benefit from lightweight summer dresses, I say its another burden of being a woman! Instead I can’t rave enough about Thigh Rescue from MegaBabe. Absolutely recommend it! I’m someone who had nearly given up on the fun summer dresses who now feels like all of that fun and all the promise of lighter clothing on hot days is back all because of Thigh Rescue!!!

A.E.

putting in a good word for plain ol’ Body Glide, too – cheaper and incredibly good at preventing thigh chafe!

J F

Thigh Rescue is amazing! I tried it after a long amusement park day, and it made the rest of summer so much better! I got the smallest size to tuck into my purse. So worth it!

Lucia

My mom could never stay in one place so whenever she and my dad would visit me from our home country she’d want to redo my whole life. I remember one Saturday morning I was 25 and I left to go to spin class, I quickly realized it was canceled so I headed back home to find my mom and dad moving my sofa and rearranging the living room of my tiny apartment. She passed away a few years ago and as a homebody who cannot bring herself to decorate even her kids’ rooms, this story made me smile and think of my mom and her adventures.

Jenna

Help a reader with a fashion ask! I need recommendations for summer sandals that are both cute AND supportive/good on one’s joints. I had a full hip replacement a few years ago (at the tender age of 38!!) and prior to that I used a cane for almost 2 years. At that time I could only wear bulky orthopedic sneakers but now I’m excited to break back into the world of fashion footwear. I’m trying to stave off needing to replace my other hip until I’m a more normal age for such things, but most cute sandals provide no support/cushion, and most supportive sandals look like I’m on my way to walk through a creek (no offense, Tevas). I live in NYC; there are no creeks; I must be chic. Help!!

aforss

Keen Elle sandals might work? They’re a minimal flatform style.

Chris

Check out Alegria sandals – very supportive yet attractive

Jennifer

Check out Naot sandals! Chic and supportive.

Sara

Yay for supportive sandals! Birks, Olukai, Vionics…those are a few I’ve loved!

Amalia

Our Aussie friends recently stayed for a particularly balmy 3 weeks here in England and they were both sporting Archies flip flops. I love the support of Birkenstocks but find they get grubby and are kinda clumpy, so I was tempted to try our Archies. After 3 weeks of walking by them in the hallway I took the plunge on a black pair. They’re very supportive and comfortable! There’s a slight squeak but I’m hoping it’ll settle in.

Kristin

Check out Thread Labs. Supportive, cushy, and cute. From the founder of Chaco.

Lisa h

After a year with awful plantar fasciitis, I always wear comfortable shoes! I just splurged on two new pairs of flip flops. My old Reef Gingers are pretty good for hanging out, but not for real walking. I bought the ugly/ cute Oofas – https://www.oofos.com/products/womens-oolala-luxe-sandal-midnight-spectre And the elegant leather Olukai Southside. Support and cushion!

Claire

I love Kork Ease sandals. I bought a pair from Garnet Hill, on sale. Not sure how they would stand up to NYC challenges, but they are not creek-like. https://www.garnethill.com/kork-ease-26-23174-3b-tutsi-leather-slides—brown/shoes-accessories/shoes/sandals/460855?&defattrib=color&defattribvalue=BRWN&uniqueId=460855_color3&isNewProduct=false&newItemBadge=false&hideNewTagFromPLP=false&

Rachel

This Australian brand has podiatrist-designed shoes that are intended to be stylish, though they are pretty expensive on their US website https://baredfootwear.com/us/collections/sandals

Mer

Bared are amazing. I tore my ACL a while ago and currently have problems walking due to hip bursitis, and my Bared shoes are the only shoes I can currently wear for anything longer than a block or two. The brand Fitflops also have cool and comfortable shoes.

Quinn

Adding Josef Siebel sandals as a suggestion — I have some platform ones from a couple of years ago that are shockingly comfortable and stylish enough to wear to the office in the summer.

Corianne

I had a full hip replacement last year too just before I turned 41, and I hear you so much on the shoes! All the supportive ones look like I ‘m about to go hike a mountain. I need a nice shoe to wear under a nice maxidress.

Mouse

Sandals: Birks, Archies, Dansko Raquel from last year, Teva Voya Infinity. Looking for closed back closed toe fisherman sandals with arch support for wide feet but I think that will be elusive….

Amanda

I can’t tell you how thrilling it is to click on a CoJ link and find out that the company charges in NZD and delivers free to New Zealand! Plus the gorgeous variety of models. I’m in!

Aileen

I have 3 pairs of sandals I wear on repeat in the Summer, my Skechers Flip Flops (so comfy and I can walk quite a distance in them), my Skechers Walking Sandals (best Sandals Ive ever owned, so comfortable to walk miles in but nice enough I can wear to dinner) and a pair of brown strappy sandals I bought years ago. They are too flat to walk miles in but nice enough to wear with dresses, jeans, skirts and you can walk a mile or so in them if the bar is a bit further away :) I have been enjoying going for Family Runs in our local park. Myself, my 12 year old and my husband have various races to train for and its been nice going out as a family to do so (I am very slow BTW but Im still doing it) I have also been trying to cook more when my husband is away (hes the cook in the family) and Ive tried Hello Fresh, Gusto etc but my absolute favourite is Simply Cook as they just send the herbs, spices and rubs you need and then you buy the rest of the ingredients. I have made quite a few tasty ones and my daughter has approved them all :) Love that bedroom in the story by the way, thats my childhood dream to have a bedroom like that!

Jane

When I was a kid, I came into the living room one day and my parents had rearranged the furniture. I cried for HOURS! lol, I don’t know why it distressed me so much. But I relate to those kiddos :)

Cara

There is a small creek that winds through our neighborhood that used to be an irrigation canal. Now it’s just a nice place for ducks to float. It’s also lined with various tulips and allium that were originally planted by an older lady who lived in the neighborhood her whole life. She’s gone now but her flowers bloom every year.

Jessie

This is so sweet Cara. And your telling of it, really transported me there for a moment. How lovely

Melanie

Have you ever read the children’s book Miss Rumphius written and illustrated by Barbara Cooney? It’s beautiful and tells a similar story. Highly recommend.

Mel

My husband does this in our neighborhood, he finds ‘sad’ looking spots and pops in some native seeds and perrennials to pretty it up :)

Madeleine

I had a irrigation canal/creek in my old neighborhood and watching the ducks was my favorite thing each summer. I had forgotten about that memory, thank you for reminding me of it! The city would drain the canal each fall and the ducks would leave and that always made me so sad, but then it was an exciting day in the spring when the water and ducks returned!!

Hali

my summer sandal plan is to go barefoot as much as possible and install a place for washing feet outside our house! Not even kidding! I went to Home Depot today for a galvanized tub and pump parts! We live two blocks from the sand with two small children and I just can’t with the shoes and the sand this time of year. I really can’t.

Tabitha H

I signed up a little late to Dracula Daily, so I’ve been playing catch up and it’s been so nice to read about Jonathan Harker’s misadventures on my lunch break! I got a cute pair of pink Crocs wedge sandals that I’m hoping are comfortable – my feet are very flat, so I have trouble finding shoes that don’t kill me. I have a pair of Birkenstocks that I wore for YEARS but suddenly they started giving me blisters for no apparent reason? Which has made me very sad, and now I’m too scared to get another pair. I have a pair of tevas sandals that also occasionally give me blisters, so I’m not sure what that’s about. Eventually I’ll probably just end up wearing un-cute orthopaedic dad shoes lol.

Ruth

I’m on my first solo trip with my 6 month old, and it’s going really well! A few little things that helped make for a smooth trip: – small white noise machine with a battery – clip-on book light with an amber light setting (in place of our nursery egg light) – that bright orange strap to attach your car seat to a travel stroller – munchkin “toss” diaper pails, which hold a few days of diapers but are themselves disposable

Claire

My fun thing this week has been comparing banana ripeness thresholds – both floors and ceilings – with my coworkers. The woman in the office next to mine eats bananas that are so unripe by my standards that I call them crunchy, and she thinks my perfectly freckled ones are ready for a compost heap. It’s been really amusing to hold up our afternoon banana snacks and laugh at each other! It’s the silly things!

Ezz

I love this so much! 😄

Shannon

As someone with a very low ripeness threshold, I think it’s essential to know who in the office will happily take an “overripe” banana off my hands. Banana compatibility is the true measure of team chemistry!

jen

im with your style icon. a tutu, soft sweater and jellies. what more do you need?

Rachel Adrianna

Such Darling nursery vibes in the bedroom photo! As an only child, I was always envious of Wendy, John, and Michael sharing a room (and of course, Neverland adventures! )

Megan

A word of caution about the thigh society shorts – they’re see through and not meant to be worn alone or in a situation where you wouldn’t want someone to see your butt! I learned the hard way wearing them under a dress at work. Otherwise I do like them!

Sasha in MT

I’m a huge bike short fan. They are pretty much the only shorts I really like for summer because they stay put on my hiker thighs. I have a couple with a phone pocket that I’ll wear with a tank on hot days, and some from the girls dept (basic, cotton, cheap) that i wear under old navy built in bra tank dresses. Pretty much my summer wardrobe. I found the keeping everything in a house just the same very endearing and touching. I grew up poor. We were always moving from one rental or family member’s home to another. Changing schools. Starting over. So much chaos and instability, not to mention not always having enough to eat. As a child i would lay in bed and just dream about my own home, my own family, my own dog someday. Not surprisingly my husband and i have lived in the same house for 25 years now, our first home, mortgage almost paid off. Most of my friends bought bigger and bigger homes, but I’ve never wanted one. Our little house is everything i dreamed of, full of dogs, and children, and hens, and peonies. And safety and stability. I wish little me knew for sure it would turn out like this.

Corey

I can picture your sweet little home – it sounds so lovely. We have a small house too and I just love it. It’s so cozy and stuffed full of rugs, mugs, records and laughter. Whenever we think of leaving our town (college towns can be exhausting), we can’t imagine leaving our tiny home with the two waterfalls within walking distance. It seems too good to be true.

Ohhh I relate to this. Moved eight times by the time I was sixteen, went to three different middle schools (because of poverty/divorce/instability) and now have been living in the same house my husband and I bought as newlyweds for the last twelve years (by far the longest I’ve ever lived in one place). Most of our friends have moved farther out into the suburbs to houses twice the size of ours, but we love our cozy little house (even if five, soon to be six, of us living in 1500 square feet takes a lot of deliberate choices about what to own and what to pass on). This was the first place I felt really safe and the place we’ve been slowly making beautiful and making our own over the last twelve years so no plans to move for now!

Kimberly, Erin, Corey. Ours is a college town too, and yes. Expensive, busy, exhausting. And also… just so full of energy and life and possibility. K, “the first place I felt really safe”. Yes. It’s just everything. And that long slow game of year by year changing little things and improving them, or repairing them, it’s that loving care that helps a place feel like home. Right now I’m so struck by how how some of our trees, and especially our lilac bushes are now, little babies that we’ve raised and give so much joy. Thank you all for responding. It feels so deeply good to be seen.

Georgie’s little foot is so cute! What a fun friend :)

Most of my summer clothes are really neutral — lots of wide legged gauze pants and plain t shirts — so I’ve wanted my summer shoes to be FUN. Bright colors, leopard print, metallics, and so on. A good outfit needs a little bit of nonsense.

K K

A good outfit needs a little bit of nonsense. What a fab statement.

Sparkles

I love the thought that “A good outfit needs a little bit of nonsense”! That’s a fabulous approach to style!

Jen

I wear platform Birkenstocks in the summer.

Katie

My summer shoe selection is a combo of my white Converse, Rothy and Quince ballet flats, and Chaco leather Wayfarer sandals (looks like these have been replaced by a model called the Townes which seems similar….my wayfarer needed breaking in but now they are very supportive and comfy!)

Kate

Oh gosh, that chili looks perfect for the weird May weather we are having in the northeast. My sandal plan are a pair of bright red Campers that are comfy and a little bold. And my little joy this week is Soma Chocolate, which you posted about in your gift guide. Their Toronto factory is near one of my work locations, and I bought truffles (Bergamot Orange and Strawberry Rhubarb) for my sweet family for the simple reason that I could.

Martha

I love my Hoka Recovery slides in pink. So comfortable! Not dressy, but perfect for every day wear. Small things Ive been enjoying? The strawberry decor trend….so cheery and whimsical! The rhododendrons blooming all over the place, in gardens and in the wild. Jennifer Weiners new book “The Griffin Sisters Greatest Hits”….read it last night at another small thing I’ve enjoyed, a Wine and Silence Book club, hosted once a month by a book store at a local wine bar. And charm bars seem to be something new…..you pick out different charms and a bracelet or necklace chain, and make yourself a personalized piece of jewelry…whimsical and fun!

Colleen

I bought a pair of these recently and will wear them all summer. I love Olukai flip flops, the sandals are a bit dressier but very comfy. https://olukai.com/products/kipea-olu-womens-leather-slide-sandals-sahara?variant=39684517527651

Anna

Those look great! I have Olukai flips I wear daily. Not loving my Oofo recovery slides after sports at all. Sweaty feet + plastic = ick. Not a great value for me at all. If anyone has non-plastic recovery slides that delight, please post up. Thanks!

Caitlin

I just got diagnosed with Idiopathic Intercranial Hypertension so my goal for this summer is to lose 25-30 lbs by making summer salads, lots of grilled veggies, and eating stone fruits!!

Erin

You’ve got this!

Lisa h

It’s a beautiful time of the year for eating well. Bring on the local veggies and fruit! I’d also recommend getting in your lean proteins.

erica

I’ve been enjoying an 8 o’clock bedtime with my 5-month old. We co-sleep, so we go to bed together and while she nurses, my whole mind and body feel at rest. It’s a really sweet moment, and the bonus is that I get a solid amount of sleep every night!

PNW GRATEFUL

Lovely <3 happy for you. That's the best.

Saltwater Sandals always and forever! https://saltwater-sandals.com/?srsltid=AfmBOoo3SowXFcZFrSZdJbovgZ-EItq-1XDmEuY8UQVG-MoY2-jUgjP3

Yesss came here to say this exactly! I prefer the sun-San ones with a thicker sole—truly the most comfortable! Nice enough to wear to work, but waterproof for the beach and pool. The best!

M.E.

I packed up all my shoes in preparation for a move that never came together, and found I can get by on three pairs–Blundstones, Birkenstocks, and Brooks–so I’ll be wearing black Arizona big buckles all summer.

Tovah

These are my “Three B’s” as well!

Lauren

I wear Blundstones, Tevas, and Converse pretty exclusively and am jealous of these alliterative versions of the trifecta 😂

Deana

I’d like a Week of Outfits and a Beauty Uniform of Alexandra Tolstoy! She is lovely.

Sasha in MT

Go down the rabbit hole of her associations. It’s a bit wild.

NWKS

Yes, please! Even though I am totally opposite in style to her, I follow her on IG for her folklectic (you heard it here first, people) home decor, and her dreamy horse riding trips through Central Asia. It’s so fascinating to see someone who has a very defined, strong look when nowadays people dress very fluid and with the trends.

Sasha

I love Georgie’s sweater! Bring on the kid sweater recommendations!

Amy

Would love to know where Georgie’s sweater is from?!?

Lemon

Half Baked Harvest has so many great soups-I had forgotten about that site. I love the Birkenstock Barbados Eva sandals. Very comfortable, cute, durable and so easy to clean. I travel with them and they keep my cranky feet very happy. https://www.birkenstock.com/us/barbados-eva/barbados-eva-eva-0-eva-u_2138.html?dwvar_barbados-eva-eva-0-eva-u__2138_width=N

Always and forever the Nisolo huaraches but damn, the Wirecutter “what your sandals say about you” on IG made me giggle!!!

Beth

Nisolo for the win!!!

Fiona

I just looked up that Wirecutter post, totally made me laugh when I got to Nisolo (it’s me)

I have been loving after-dinner “popsicle walks” with my son. A great moment of connection after a long day and nothing gives summer nostalgia like a popsicle. We are especially into Johnny Pops!

Amanda

Oh my gosh, this is a great idea. We love Johnny pops too, allergen friendly for peanut allergies! My boys are 6 and 2, we like to do pajama walks, all bathed up, in pjs, wearing their baby blankets like capes, and take a stroll right around bedtime.

Dawn

Just bought these in deep tan. The leather is gorgeous and are quite comfortable to walk in. I wanted something a bit nicer looking than Birkenstocks. https://www.saksfifthavenue.com/product/a.emery-jalen-slim-leather-sandals-0400020587812.html?site_refer=CSE_GGLPLA%3AWomens_Shoes%3AA.Emery&country=US&currency=USD&CSE_CID=G_Saks_PLA_US_Women%27s+Shoes%3AAll+Shoes&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=781433991&gbraid=0AAAAADO6JtQiGf8QXl9nYQrrwb0qlmJyF&gclid=Cj0KCQjwlrvBBhDnARIsAHEQgOSp_MbG1MxV9qJu-dhkg1eK-rHLjDC33oRHaab-6l4aQk2Y4P8CcYQaAvu5EALw_wcB&dwvar_0400020587812_color=DEEP+TAN&dwvar_0400020587812_size=38+%288%29

Small things I’ve been enjoying: Collecting books again. I stopped for awhile when adult life got busy. We had a large, walk in pantry which we recently renovated into an office/library. Our 5 yr old christened it The Parlor. And now I hop on Thriftbooks every month to add to our collection which I just LOVE. I am not a cook. I don’t enjoy it. I have accepted this part of myself. But, 2 months ago, I began to make a roast chicken with potatoes every Tuesday night. I prep in the morning when I’m fresh and pop it in the oven to roast when I’m dog tired in the evening. We have a Meater and it makes the cook a cinch. Framing kid art like it’s from a museum. Matted, little brass plaque, art light. The works.

Chris

I’ve made the NYT curried red lentil soup with spinach and sweet potatoes twice in the past month. It’s so darn good. Also lov boy shorts under a dress.

Elizabeth

OMG I made it Monday and it is sooooo good. I had like 4 bowls in two days.

M.E.

That sounds great!
