Jon Hamm’s New Drama About a Jewelry Thief

What TV shows are you watching these days? Jon Hamm’s new TV series, Your Friends & Neighbors, starts tomorrow…

Embedded video

Doesn’t the trailer look fun? Hamm plays a hedge fund manager, newly divorced and jobless, who starts stealing from his rich neighbors’ homes to maintain his family’s lifestyle.

I have a funny jewelry thief story (as one does): In my twenties, I worked for a magazine called Topic, where we’d interview people who were connected to each issue’s topic (for example, a competitive hot dog eater for the “Food” issue). For our “Sin” issue, I reached out to a jewelry thief, Bill Mason, who had just gotten out of jail. Similar to Jon Hamm’s character, he had charmed his way into high society and then stolen more than $35 million worth of jewelry from people he met at parties, including Phyllis Diller, Bob Hope, and Truman Capote. (!!!) My interview with him was intense: the day after I’d left a voice message for him, he called me back while I was walking home from work in Manhattan, so I sat down on the sidewalk along First Avenue, opened my laptop, and wrote down everything he said.

So, I’m extra excited to watch this show. Will you be watching it? Anything else grabbing your attention these days?

P.S. Our Ultimate TV Guide, if you’re looking for something great, and do TV jobs seem real? We asked a doctor, chef, priest and therapist.

Finished The White Lotus just in time for the new season of The Handmaid’s Tale (also coincides nicely with the end of basketball season (for my team, at least)). Jon Hamm icks me out for some reason so probably won’t watch this one. Would love to read Joanna’s story on the real-life jewelry thief if there’s an archived link somewhere!

Cy.

I love the cast and tried to watch the first episode. I found it really depressing, but will probably try again.

Sasha in MT

I find Hamm creepy. Always have. That said, I saw the preview and thought this looked fun. And it is. I like that our hero is just getting destroyed. I love this for him. We all know he deserves it. They all do. It’s a bit of a Gatsby kind of a story where you hate them all and only wish the worst for them. Other great shows recently: The Residence Survival of the Thickest The Righteous Gemstones Ludwig Our Flag Means Death Loved the Meghan Markle show.

Fiobd

I read about the Jon Hamm hazing incident and that coupled with his alliance with Tina Fey and it really put me off him which is a shame as loved him in Mad Men. Sounds like this is terrible so I’m not missing much!

Rachel

That opening dialogue was so cheesy and inappropriate. We quickly turned it off. Unfortunately I have no desire to fill my mind with this garbage.

Elsa

I was sooo excited to start this show, with so much I love in it (stealing from the rich, Olivia Munn…). But I actually don’t like it ! We had to stop at the middle of the second episode because it was so underwhelming. My boyfriend rightly pointed out that it felt like a 90s/2000s drama (Californication style) about a man for whom everything goes wrong but nothing is his fault. Also the opening theme is (badly) done by AI? What’s up with that? Also is does not, by a long shot, meet the Bechdel Test ? I have watched countless of those shows and films before but here it feels way more obvious than ever before. Does anyone else feel disappointed by this show? Should I stick with watching it because it actually becomes good at the end of the second episode? I’m ready to be convinced haha

Sam S

Felt the same way! I turned to my husband after epi 1 and said I can tell this show was written by men about men. Hard pass.

PNW GRATEFUL

I stopped midway through 2nd episode also. Saw nothing worth watching in it. Yes very underwhelmed. I wanted to like it too. Maybe it does get better, I don’t know. I don’t give shows much of a chance, but it wasn’t interesting to me in any way.

Emily

same watched the first two episodes and was major ICK – male consumer capitalism centered. normally love jon hamm but honestly that opening dialogue felt pretty rich coming from someone who was previously partnered with an age appropriate woman and just married someone 20 years younger – NO THANKS

Nancy

I watched the first episode of Just Friends and Neighbors and was somewhat underwhelmed-not sure if I will try episode 2. Loving Hacks, Dark Winds and just finished White Lotus!!!

Judy

Is anyone else completely undone by Love on the Spectrum? We are laughing with complete delight at the most wholesome, honest and inspiring people! Main characters and their families. A love fest.

Jennifer

Follow this up with Austin, if you can find it! One of the main players in Love on the Spectrum in a just delightful comedy.

Lori

I randomly clicked on north of north on Netflix and was so immediately drawn in. Set in a tiny Intuit arctic community, this series is about a young woman who is trying to carve her own path and make a life for herself. The actors are engaging and it is fascinating learning a bit about their culture.

Lindsey

I’m so excited this is available in the U.S. now!

Caitlyn

Just finished this, and loved it! So hoping a second season happens.

Julia

Currently watching and enjoying A Discovery of Witches, Suits, and the new season of White Lotus. I loved The Diplomat, Workin’ Moms, and Sex Education. I pretty much exclusively watch comedies, romance, and lighter dramas, nothing too dark or violent. I can’t handle it since having kids, and even moreso given the state of the world…

amanda

LOVE A Discovery of Witches

Jess

This is 100% also my taste in TV for exactly the same reason. The Diplomat was 10/10 for me. Is the west wing your comfort TV too?? Haha

Nancy

So glad for Hacks to be back!!! Also watching Dope Thief – it’s great & The Pitt – also great. Loved the 3rd season of White Lotus and the 2nd season of Severance. I’m excited for the new Jon Hamm show. There is sooooo much good TV right now. I only wish I could say the same for the the movie theatre

Amanda

I’ve really been enjoying Ludwig (streaming on Britbox here in the US), and Berlin ER on Apple TV. Although, sadly, I have to pop a Dramamine for the latter because of shaky camera but worth it!

renée

Jon Hamm (in the pool picture) makes me think of Fred Flintstone…

Jen

SO happy that Hacks is back!!!!!

Allie

Machos Alfa has been a really fun show to watch. It’s a Spanish show that takes place in Madrid. The cast and the scenery are so great.

Leah

It’s certainly not light, but I’ve been watching Dopesick after reading Demon Copperhead. It is about Purdue Pharma’s creation of the opioid epidemic in Appalachia; it’s one of those shows that’s heart-wrenching but feels important to watch.

Katie

Thanks to this blog, I watched and loved My Lady Jane and am currently doing a rewatch

Joanna Goddard

awww I’ll tell Gemma :)

Sam

About once a month my sister-in-law and I still lament it wasn’t renewed. Exceptional casting and, of course, hilarious story. A rewatch is certainly in order!

amanda

Have you tried Dickinson? Very similar vibe!

Jenny

Oh no! It wasn’t renewed?! Both my husband and I loved it. What a bummer!

Elsa

I was sooo disapointed when it was not renewed, I don’t understand why. The story is great, the acting is great, the score is so good and don’t get me started on the chemistry! What can we do for it to be picked up by another network?

Emily

Fun fact – the showrunner for Your Friends & Neighbors is Jonathan Tropper – who wrote novels like This is Where I Leave You before concentrating fully on TV.

Lauren

We started Paradise last night! James Marsden is always a yes, but… The twist and turns in episode one!

Emily

Loved this show! watched it in 2 weeks

C P S

I haven’t even watched the trailer, but I am loving the outfits already – I’d love to hear from the costume designer!

Katy

Watching mid-century modern…rewatched 3 times through. Lighthearted and great cast

Lori

Would like to put a plug in for Survival of the Thickest on Netflix. Great comedy and fashion and very body positive!

Teresa

I’m half way through the new season and it’s So GOOD! The fashion is fantastic, the casting is perfect, and it’s hilarious. Definitely recommend!

Sasha in MT

We loved this show too

Julia

I’ve been watching and loving Abbott Elementary. So good and funny! Barbara is my favorite!

Claire

Love that show. Ava cracks me up every time.

Caitlin

Yes!! That is such a good show!

anon

A show I rarely hear folks mention and that I reallllllly love is Will Trent. Police procedural with a sense of humor and a phenomenal cast. (I’m in love with pretty much every character.)

Helga

Yesssssss! It’s so good. Every character feels so human. And the outfits. Just wow.

Courtney

PEOPLE – get on the Will Trent train NOW. Don’t assume it’s a typical law and order type network drama. It’s so much more!!!

Kat

This show looks great! But I am a bit concerned about the title of the article. I haven’t heard of the phrase “Black Comedy” before to refer to gallous humor, but I don’t love it. It just further reinforces our society’s racism and how ingrained it is in our language that often “Black” and “dark” are used as a synonym for “bleak, twisted,” etc. It continues to sadden me, and I hope we can be more intentional in our language. When I see the phrase “Black comedy,” I want it to refer to an awesome Black Tv show that is hilarious!

Joanna Goddard

thanks for your note, Kat! I’ve heard the same thing about “blackmail” and “black list” and “black market,” etc. but I hadn’t thought of it in terms of the phrase “black comedy.” I’ll swap out the wording now. thank you for your note! xo

Rose

Interesting. Is this a generational thing? For me and most of my Gen-X peers, Black Comedy or Dark comedy has always meant tragic/funny. A comedy with a black cast would just be a comedy.

Maxine

Agree with Rose – I’m black and Gen X and have no issue with the phrase black comedy.

Kate

Did you mean “gallows humor” or “gallous humor,” which google tells me is a Scottish term? If you’re Scottish it might be a lost in translation thing. Black comedy is a specific genre of film and TV.

Emily

The terms “black comedy,” “dark humour” etc. have been around forever. I am a millennial and have known them my whole life. There is no racist connotation to these terms and the fact that you would find one is seriously just …weird. Seems like a liberal parody honestly. Like is rage bait making its way into the coj comment section??? .

Sasha in MT

Emily, it’s only rage bait if you’re triggered by any discussion of racism. Racism exists in our language in many ways. We still commonly use all kinds of terms that originally were based on an understanding that “Black” is dark, evil, bad, the opposite of good. And yes, of course Black peoples thence were subjected to ideas that THEY were those things because they are darker than the “default” white people. Did Jo mean black comedy to mean anything associated with racism? No. But does she understand that words are important, have historical context, and can cause harm. Also, she is mature enough to just visage the wording without taking personal offense when it’s brought to her attention. There are loads of terms in our language that we would be wise to reconsider- many are antisemitic and racist towards native American peoples too. It’s just not a big deal to avoid saying them and use language that’s not offensive.

Claire

We just finished the first 2 seasons of Shrinking. And while its depiction of home interiors of the main characters really unrealistic (so much good design and high end decor!) the depiction of pain following a death in the family very real. Plus how to deal with the aftermath through therapy. I also highly recommend Pachinko: beautiful and heart wrenching and really opened my eyes to a period of history I knew nothing about. The human spirit endures!

Heidi

loooove Shrinking.

amanda

Interesting point on the interiors. Do you have shows where you felt the middle class aesthetic was hit right? Very interested in this

Maxine

Completely agree with you, Claire. I kept saying, “there’s no way – that house is way too nice and put together”

Caitlin

Oh I will certainly be watching!!! It looks fun! I started watching The Pitt. It’s SO GOOD if you don’t mind blood/bodily fluids. And Noah Wyle is in it from ER!

Rachel

The Pitt is amazing, truly one of the best shows in years imo. Dying for Sex made me howl with laughter and ugly cry. The Residence was light and funny and made me feel like I was watching a female led Knives Out. The Day of the Jackal was suspenseful and so well acted. The Diplomat is the show I would most like another season of asap.

Kristin

I never hear anyone talk about The Day of the Jackal and I thought it was amazing.

veronica

Could not make it through the first episode of The Pitt. Too bloody for me, and all the stress just sent my anxiety through the roof, but I hear it is very realistically made.

Jess

@veronica – I’m an ER doc in a major metro area and can confirm it’s pretty accurate in a lot of ways. Especially the stress/anxiety building throughout the shift.

Anna

Finished The White Lotus just in time for the new season of The Handmaid’s Tale (also coincides nicely with the end of basketball season (for my team, at least)). Jon Hamm icks me out for some reason so probably won’t watch this one. Would love to read Joanna’s story on the real-life jewelry thief if there’s an archived link somewhere!

Jay Em

Yes! Total ick.

Chloe

I paid for a Max subscription to watch the White Lotus, but since they released the episodes just once a week, I started binging the Pitt and Industry. Curious what folks think of Industry— the characters (esp Harper) are all so flawed I find it a bit frustrating. I’ll have to keep my subscription since Havks is coming soon!

Erin

Anyone else elated that season 3 of Hacks comes out today?

Sara

Meeeeeee!!!!

Eleanor

It was a lovely treat to stumble upon – so glad it’s back!!

Nancy

yesssssssssss

Amrita

Lately I’ve been watching two series on the Discovery app called Beach Cottage Chronicles and Cabin Chronicles. The episodes are 10 minute long cinematic stories about beautiful dreamy homes around the US. I find it so comforting.

wednesday

Love. Watching those shows is like drinking a cup of tea.

Kristin

Yes to this – I love these shows also and find them so soothing.

Kristin

Yes, I’ve watched both and they are so relaxing!

mado

I don’t watch tv often but I just started Our Flag Means Death and it’s very entertaining. So out there. Just along for the ride.

Stacey

What a show! So funny and weird and heartwarming and heartbreaking.

Inez

Loved that show with all my heart

ARC

Just read the book Long Bright River and could not put it down. Highly recommend! (Didn’t know there was a TV show as well.)

Sasha in MT

Love this show. So so much. That scene where our beloved pirates are being attacked by the bad boy brits (what a bunch of absolute assholes!), and they play Fleetwood Mac’s The Chain, that ominous base beginning….. it’s just brilliant and breathtaking. Coupled with what can only be described as so much bleak humor and plain old silliness, it’s a show that just makes you forget this world.

Claire

I am looking forward to this show. Jon Hamm seems to excel at every role he plays. We are currently watching The Residence, and I absolutely love it. It’s fun and funny and original, and the actors are terrific. Al Franken plays a senator. We are also watching Long, Bright River, with Amanda Seyfried It is excellent, a dark, suspenseful mystery.

Cara

The Residence! Yesssssss! Everyone get yourself to this show.

Ceridwen

Loved The Residence too!

Maryn

My husband and I just finished The Residence and loved it!

Emily

The book Long Bright River is so so so good. Liz Moore is one of the very best writers out there now.

Amy

I can’t wait for this one. I love Jon Hamm! The Studio is the only thing I’m watching right now, and I love the cameos. The physical humor was a surprise and had me laughing out loud!

Kim

I’m loving The Studio. So funny and each episode has an interesting premise. I can’t wait to start Jon Hamm’s show.

Peach

Crash Landing On You! I’m a little late to the party, but I’m loving it so much. It’s the perfect balance of humor, action, and romance. The acting and writing is fab – even the side characters have distinct motivations, etc. I’m so drawn in!

Lisa

Crash Landing is soooo good! The character development is excellent!

Kendall

This is one of my favorite shows of all time. The main love story is great, but all of the side characters really made the show for me. I’ve rewatched it twice!

sarah

Welcome to the party! This show is so good!!! We watched as a family a few years back when my kids were early teens and it might be one of my favorite memories together. We were all so hooked. The characters have SO MUCH HEART. (And Captain Ri and Sari fell in love in real life too. Swoon!)

Sonia

I like the Korean dramas, but struggle a bit with the length. Long episodes, and a lot of them! Having said that, I LOVED Extraordinary Attorney Woo, I would have happily watched more of that one :)

Julie

I watched Dying for Sex in one sitting last night and am still dehydrated from bawling. It was such a beautiful look at death and sex and expectations, our relationship with our bodies…I just loved it. All of the acting was absurdly great, but shout out to Rob Delaney who elevates everything he’s in. Also watching The Pitt, The Studio, The Great North, and Hacks.

Julie

Another Julie here, totally in love with this show. I didn’t know what to expect beyond the basic description, but it ended up being everything.

Josephine

Agreed! Rob Delaney is so great in everything.

Emily O

I binged it too- it wrecked me in all the best ways! Now I’m listening to the podcast ‘Dying for Sex’ that the real life Molly and Nikki recorded (what the show is based on) and now I love them even more and I’m entirely wrecked again

Not a Hamm Fan

I won’t watch anything with Jon Hamm in it: https://people.com/crime/jon-hamm-accused-of-violent-fraternity-hazing-report/

Erin

Yep. My husband was a pledge in the house. That People story only captures a fraction of the abuse (not all by Hamm). The house was shut down and became an office building. I work at UT, just a few blocks away.

Anon

I am also not a hamm fan after hearing about his character

Joanna Goddard

oh my gosh, wow!

Krista

I’m not a Jon Hamm fan either—I actually think he’s really overrated as an actor. And what he did as a frat boy is horrifying. But I do wonder—this is a genuine question, not a rhetorical one—are we allowed to change and improve, to regret awful things we did (granted, this is not the average awful thing), without being held to that moment forever? Is it reasonable to boycott Jon Hamm’s work as a fifty-something man because of something he did in his early twenties? Obviously, you can choose not to watch anything Jon Hamm is in (I can’t stand watching anything with Brad Pitt anymore). But I do wonder if it’s reasonable to judge someone exclusively from awful actions committed decades earlier.

Claire

I wondered the same as Krista. Of course we should opt out of anything that doesn’t serve us well, but I am never clear about what is achieved by boycotting an entire show over bad things done decades ago. I don’t think it sends a message that will be received and accurately interpreted. It doesn’t change the trauma of a past event, or help those who have suffered. And there are so many other people involved in creating a show, should their work also be ostracized as collateral damage? That doesn’t seem right to me. Not sure what to suggest otherwise, but just saying the issue is not at all clear to me.

jennifer

I think Krista brings up a good point and something to think about. Not saying I feel one way or another about what he’s done, again, like Krista offers there are celebrities that I just won’t watch any more. NY Times *just* did a profile on Hamm and the frat situation came up (albeit briefly) in regards to where he’s at in his life now, the work he’s done on himself, etc. Worth a read. If nothing else it helps us to further contextualize celebrity, redemption, and whether separating artists from their art is a worthwhile topic.

Not a Hamm Fan

To the people who replied asking why can’t we forgive him and move on, I wonder, would you feel the same way if he did it to someone you love? Would you forgive and forget? Would you accept that he is now famous and making millions of dollars? Do you think it is okay to cast someone who committed horrible violence, and didn’t seem to regret it until people started calling him out on it? Do you think that it is OK to fawn over someone who tortured someone, simply because he is in the public eye and has a conventionally attractive face? And I return the question to you: Does being an actor creating work for the public cancel out any horrible things he has done?

Krista

@ Not a Hamm Fan, I think we’re coming at this issue from different perspectives. Neither I nor the others who responded to your comment fawned over Hamm, but simply questioned whether one has a moral responsibility to boycott his work–certainly we’re all allowed to boycott anything we want! If it disturbs you to watch an actor, you absolutely shouldn’t. To answer your questions, if he’d committed this violence on a loved one, I would hate him to this day, I would hate to see his success and his millions. Nonetheless, I’m not sure that he should never be hired to work because of a terrible he did in his university years. Do people have the right to redeem themselves? We don’t really know how Jon Hamm felt about his actions all these years before it came out in the public. No, being an actor doesn’t cancel out the horrible thing he did. But at the same time, does the horrible thing he did mean he should never work as an actor? Of course, this question changes if he had a string of violent incidents behind him.

Kirby

This is such a complicated question, and it is doesn’t really have a ‘right’ does it? I mean, if we cannot forgive, then people who do something wrong would cover it up by all and every means…. what are if we cannot redeem ourselves, and allow others to redeem themselves? Who gets to decide the consequences? I have no answer at all….

sara

Someone must be apologetic and renounce past behavior in order to be forgiven, imo. And I mean it depends on the situation but a public figure? Absolutely they must publicly renounce their poor behavior. I didn’t read the article but if he is sorry than forgiveness after so much time is healthy and appropriately compassionate.

Sarah

Not excusing the behavior – but hazing is not new. It’s still ongoing at many universities to this day. The difference is, those people aren’t in the spotlight. Hamm wasn’t the only one engaging in this and I would hope that as a young person after that incident, he learned from it and would make a different choice today as a grown adult. By all means – don’t watch his movies and shows if you truly dislike him.

lfmcg

I remember reading Bill Mason’s memoir when it came out and could not put it down! If I recall correctly, he stole Johnny Weissmuller’s gold medals (and then returned them). Fascinating guy. How lucky you were to interview him!

Joanna Goddard

he was SO intense on the phone!! definitely had a huge presence.

Emily

I feel like I have very picky TV taste and have to admit that I generally do not have the same taste as Joanna! I feel like I actually enjoy all of about 3 shows. There’s little that holds my interest through to the end. Some that I really do love: All Creatures Great and Small, Bridgerton, Leverage, Shetland, the Gilded Age, Ted Lasso, and (surprisingly) Nobody Wants this. Help! Any recommendations??

anon

I think you might like The Residence based on this list!

Anna

I have the same taste! I also like downton abbey, bear with me -sweet magnolias, weirdly addictive, the durrells in corfu, mad men, Gilmore girls, old 90s sitcoms that remind me of being a kid, also don’t hate I love Lucy/leave it to beaver in the background

AMS

Shetland is my favorite! Have you tried Vera or Endeavour? I also loved Inspector Lewis.

alex

durrells in corfuuuuuuuuuu yesssss

Marianne

We have similar tastes in shows. I also loved Good Karma Hospital. Five seasons, I wish there were more!

Jeanne

Some tv that is along the same lines as All Creatures that you may enjoy: Anne of Green Gables series – Canadian 1985 version with Megan Follows & Colleen Dewhurst. Visually beautiful with great acting. Avail on Amazon (free on Prime), Peacock Premium & Gazebo TV Call the Midwife – British show that takes place in 1950s London. Very loving relationships.14 seasons and still going. Avail on PBS, Netflix, Hulu, YouTube Premium, Amazon Prime rent Cranford & Return to Cranford – BBC 1840s period series starring Judy Dench & Imelda Staunton. Took me a couple eps to get into it but moves very quickly once it gets going. Amazon Prime The Durrells in Corfu – British period show, widow moves her 4 kids to the island of Corfu in 1930. Also beautiful scenery. Avail on PBS

Ana Devine

The Good Place and Man on the Inside. Eminently rewatchable.

Meghan

Anna, yes! I love I Love Lucy – and Dick van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore and the like – and Gilmore Girls reruns!

Emma O

I think if you like All Creatures Great and Small, you’ll like The Durrells. Also recommend a Danish series called Seaside Hotel (Badehotellet). I really like The Detectorists.

IVEY

Yes to the Detectorists!!!!!!! It’s about metal detecting which doesn’t sound like much but it’s oh so good! Great characters and acting, beautiful scenery and it makes me wish for their life. Simple and good.

Emily

Y’all are my people. Bless!! And yes, loved Endeavor, couldn’t get into Vera which was disappointing given how much I liked Shetland. Also yes to Anne if Green Gables (Gilbert is my forever crush) and Call the Midwife!

Amy

Have you watched the Detectorists? One of my all time favorite shows that I think you might vibe with (kind of fits with your Ted Lasso enjoyment). Another show I think you might enjoy (more a period piece) is Anne with an E — not new but I totally missed it when it came out. They stayed true to Anne of Green Gables but added additional context that wasn’t in the book but true to the times — so LGBT characters, more about her orphanage experience, etc.. It is so well done.

Charlotte

Do you know the feeling that sth is really precious to you and you really consider with whom you want to share this miracle? In my case, it is a movie which I have not seen yet but when I watched the trailer I felt in my heart it will be my most beholden movie of this decade. Tadahhh: The Ballad of Wallis Island (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTi-e20yVNs) I love it so much already; I am quite sure I could not cope with anything less than a „It opened my heart and finally the sun came up“ remark from others. If you want to watch it, I hope it will make you as happy as watching the trailer has made me :) (Out in the US, Europe still has to wait a bit) You’re welcome, swoon :)

Joanna Goddard

oh my gosh, wow, what a review! thank you so much for this rec, Charlotte xo

Caroline

Just saw this film in Brooklyn. So gorgeous, absolutely hilarious, and life-affirming. What a treat!

amanda

I love Tim Key! Sold!

Allison

I’m watching The Residence on Netflix. It’s like Knives Out, meets Downton Abbey and the West Wing. Very good so far!

Megan

It was SO FUN!

Danielle

Jon Hamm yes, but also, Amanda Peet!! Love her.

Joanna Goddard

love her, too xo

veronica

My favorite Amanda Peet movie is A Lot Like Love, a very silly rom com with the gorgeous guy who married Demi Moore really young, can’t remember name, but he is funnnnny, though Amanda Peet is fully his equal here. ESPECIALLY the out takes that roll during the credits – sooooo funny.

Andrea

There is a Jon Hamm doppelgänger architect renovating his MCM home in Denver and documenting it on YouTube. His name is Josh Robinson and the house is in Sunset Lanes. M’ROW!

Pamela

Andor season 2 comes out later this month and I am very excited. It’s a wonderful era to be a Star Wars fan in general!

Peach

So excited about this! Andor is one of the best shows, ever. Hard stop. I don’t think someone even needs to be interested in Star Wars.

Amanda

Andor feels especially timely, you know?

Claire

I’ve never been super in to Star Wars but l started watching Andor when my husband and son tuned in, and ended up loving it. I’m looking forward to season 2.

Emily O

I’m really enjoying Paradise. My friend Stephen Markley is a writer on the show. He spent over a decade researching and writing a novel about climate change, called The Deluge, and knowing this makes the show so much more terrifying!

Kay from Queens

My husband and I just started Paradise! It is so compelling (and I absolutely love Sterling K Brown). We’re only 2 episodes in so I’m excited for the ride.

ashley

I can’t wait to watch this show. Maybe it’s just me, but I’m suuuuper into Jon Hamm as a bad guy (hello Fargo).

S G

Ooooh, like a hot villain??? Yes, please!!

Kristin

Been excited for this to start. Also happy that Hacks is back! Great TV week.

Karrie

I will be reading all the comments to find our next show. Definitely will check out anything Jon Ham is in! We just finished White Lotus and !923. So looking for our next fix. Thank!

CG2

We are watching Ludwig with our 12-year-old (had to subscribe to Britbox for it). Good so far! We just finished Black Doves and enjoyed that. We’ve also loved every season of Slow Horses. The latter two are spy dramas that hit the sweet spot–blackly comedic, exciting but not too stressful, dramatic but not too violent.

Allison

Now that you have BritBox, might I recommend Death in Paradise, Father Brown, and Sister Boniface? All delightful :)

CG2

I watched Death in Paradise years ago when it was on some other streaming service we already had and I liked it except they kept switching out the main character! I will have to check out the other two–thanks!

Lia

Is Vera still on BritBox?? I love Brenda Blethyn!

Jill

Will def be watching this and LOVE Jon Hamm. I’m currently obsessed with Landman which in addition to the brilliant Billy Bob Thorton and Ali Larter does in fact star Jon Hamm as well. SOOO good!

mary

I needed a fun watch after I worked my way through Younger so now I’m on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Jon Hamm’s The Reverend is a delight! His conniving charm in the courtroom scenes is just so well done. What a jerk who knows he is handsome as hell. The writing, all of the one-off Titus comments, it’s just what I need on lunch break.

Erin

Pinot noir, mid-size car! ; )

Kat

Wait your jewelry thief anecdote is only a fraction of a story! What happened next? What did he say? What did you write and how was it received? Did you learn anything interesting?? I’m going to need more here!

Joanna Goddard

I am trying to find the old issue!!! it wasn’t online, so I have to track down the print copy somewhere in our apartment. he said some wild things, but I can’t remember them exactly.

Rose

Yes need more!!!!!!

Emily O

Came here to say the same thing! Would LOVE to know more!

Sara

Same!

Hope

SAME! Obsessed with impressive thieves, who aren’t violent. This seems like a top tier dinner party anecdote!

dahlia

I am finding television difficult these days. I really do not want to judge other people’s choices about their bodies, so I hope y’all can hear this as a me-statment, which is how I intend it: watching entertainment in which I am sharing emotion but the people whose faces I am watching do not move naturally to express their emotions really distresses my body. Also, watching things in which almost all of the women my age (I’m 55) have deeply altered faces tells me that my natural face is not acceptable, and I find that really saddening. It’s not a message I am willing to receive very often. I’m reading a lot these days, and cooking ridiculous things from scratch, and playing games, and taking long baths. I also see my retired elders watching TV for many hours a day, and I want more from that for myself. TV is not common for me, and tends to be old BBC murder mysteries where people have gloriously natural faces. I love science fiction and there’s so much good stuff, but… eh. On the one hand, I’m over the moon about the Murderbot adaptation coming up, but I also know it’s going to make my gut feel really weird to watch. Again: not a judgement of anyone else’s choices. But that is not for me.

Anon

You’re not the only one. So much is being made of new films and television that center “older” women as objects and agents of desire. That’s great but so many of these women are so cosmetically adjusted. I’ve begun to feel like it’s all a ploy to sell services and products to women…Forever.

madeleine

Great comment and got me thinking! One thing that has given me…pause… is how often now I have no idea who I am looking at. And this is with celebrity faces that I have seen since I was a child. Is that Christina Aguilera, Shania Twain, or Kate Beckinsale? I literally have no idea. A strange world. One thing I know to be true, though, is that society swings on a pendulum. Give this a decade and then there will be a rebellion (probably of Gen Alpha or something) that “natural is in”. Humans are weird!

Kai

it’s interesting–I hear you about the altered faces. but I guess I’ve kind of internalized it as an occupational hazard? like when I go to the dentist and everyone is in scrubs and has exceedingly white teeth I feel like oh, that’s the vibe of the dentist office, you know? doesn’t feel like a reflection of what I should be doing. I say this not because I, a stranger, care whether you watch TV–the stuff you’re describing sounds way more fun than tv time! But more that there may be a way to kind of think of all the Hollywood aesthetics as the truly job specific outliers they are, rather than a judgement on your own gloriously natural face!

Louisa

I was just thinking this same thing! No one my age (~50) on tv looks like me; not even at my most aspirational :) . It’s strange and alienating.

Diana

Dang, Dahlia. At 42, I appreciate your perspective and I think I agree with you. No judgment to others, but the proliferation of obvious and subtle treatments can wear on someone who is aging without much intervention (but still prone to comparing). I agree about loving old British shows. Deadloch was great, too.

anon

This is interesting to me! On the one hand, I relate to some of what you describe because I experience a similar feeling of disconcertion seeing faces on tv that don’t move in usual ways. I’m still in my late 40s, but my emotional response to that feeling of discomfort is relief and gratitude that my face is moveable in its usual ways. Which I think, pondering your comment, means I feel like my natural face is fully acceptable (to me anyway!).

Lexie

This is such a thoughtful comment. Thank you for sharing your perspective. When I start to feel like I’m being inundated with how to look or what to buy or what my house should look like, similar to you, I try to ground myself in real life. I also remind myself that it’s not my job to be beautiful.

celeste

I guess I don’t know what an “altered face” looks like? Huh.

Miriam

As soon as I looked at the photos in this post, I thought something very similar: while Jon Hamm hasn’t had any botox, both of those women certainly have! The double standard for how men are allowed to age but women aren’t has really been driving me crazy lately (and been a lot more noticeable as I approach 40). Why are women supposed to stay perfect? Can’t we normalize aging? I truly wish more women be cool with all the beautiful lines on their faces and leave them there!

Katie S.

I hear you, Dahlia. I think it might be because of this that I am naturally drawn to consuming media where the actresses have embraced (or even better, are totally neutral about) aging – Kirsten Dunst, Keri Russell, Jamie Lee Curtis and Francis McDormand immediately come to mind. It doesn’t hurt that they are supreme actors!

Gillian

Have you seen the forever charming Aimee Lou Wood talk about botox?! Love her perspective. https://www.tiktok.com/@voguemagazine/video/7489916178375347502

Josephine

I am watching Dying For Sex and I am happy to report that Michele Williams, Jenny Slate and Sissy Spacek all look their age and all look absolutely gorgeous and relatable. I’m not sure any of them even have makeup on – but I’m sure they must. Maybe because the show runners are women?

Heather

This is really interesting! Keira Knightley In black doves looked her age and it was noticeable in how rare it is. Loved it!

Bobby

I just saw the trailer for The Return with Rafe Fiennes and Juliette Binoche. I was struck by how beautiful she looked, and how she looked every bit of her age. Sheclearly hasn’t had any work. I predict that in the next ten or so years the new status symbol will be NOT getting work!

Charlotte

Yes! I often watch older movies (anything BBC), and am often astounded to see people above the age of e.g. 50 who don’t come across as 32 year olds having freshly escaped from the relaxation grotto including facials etc. It feels good to see them on my screen! That said, if you want to see sth more contemporary with non-shiny humans: The Change with Bridget Christie (the 2nd series just came out). Weird, funky and you can just dive into the craziness bathed in the topic of menopause. It is delightful. Also: If you want to simply laugh and be delighted about life, I cannot repeat this enough :) Derry Girls. And again, at least from my view, real human faces.

Anon

As a TV writer and producer, just want to chime in to say this is completely real and we hate it too. It feels so weird to write for these amazing actresses who can barely move their foreheads anymore. And while it is of course an individual choice and there is sooooo much pressure to be aesthetically “perfect” / young forever, it always seems to me like a painter blinding themselves. You need your face in order to act! I have a lot of empathy for what these older actresses are up against, and the death knell it must feel like to age out of a certain kind of romantic/sexual lead roles. But yeah. It’s a tough problem for sure, and we creatives feel it too.

Mar

Once I realized I was feeding myself artificial representations of aging, I made a conscious decision to watch movies from other countries (French, German, Latin American, etc.) or with actresses who have aged more naturally. I find it refreshing to see more aging faces — but it’s crazy that you have to make an effort to find them! I hope I can heal my bias and get used to seeing humans as they are, accepting themselves and the passing of time. I need it as i’m about to enter my 40s and i want to be at peace.

Amanda

I am 45 and feel the same way about all the unnatural looks but for some reason it instead empowers me. Like to be one of the few remaining naturally aging woman and honestly from my experience it is what the people I admire the most find beautiful. It all has to do with authenticity and having your values align with what you are putting out there to the rest of the world. If something doesn’t line up it shows, and that isn’t attractive. Most of us innately want to be who we are even as we age.

Inez

Thank you for this thoughtful comment! I feel the same. It also really distorts the illusion. Am I supposed to believe all American detectives / doctors / housewives / etc have fully made up unlined faces and blindingly white super straight teeth?

Tricia

What you say, Dahlia, resonates with me. I wish we could all celebrate the beauty found in the faces of, say, Judi Dench and Maggie Thomas -two actresses whose weathered faces appear so natural in their onscreen acting.

Kelly

Dahlia, I feel the same way!!! I find natural faces so beautiful, the range of humanity, and I feel so odd about the disconnect from that. I also actually like normal teeth! Not perfectly straight, not perfectly bleached.

Tori

I hear this and went through my own version of it. A lot of British television actors are unaltered and other international productions…Call my agent on Netflix (French) comes to mind. I think it’s probably healthy to give some it some space and you may feel differently about watching these productions in the future. I sort of made my peace with it by finding many many images of beautiful women who aged naturally and it made me feel less alone to make that choice and then I sort of came to the conclusion that women who choose to alter themselves to with things like Botox, in my opinion ultimately still look their age. But I agree it can be difficult to take at times.

Kate

Dahlia, this is such a thoughtful comment, thank you for sharing it! I’ve been noticing that watching TV seems to set off alarm bells in my brain/body in a new way the past few years, and I haven’t been sure if it’s me or the TV that’s changed. But I bet this is part of it! I’m deeply attuned to peoples faces and emotions and often notice all the layers of artificiality to things. (Like all the filler in cooking shows!) I am also more sensitive now to situations where my attention is being commanded but not rewarded – and it feels like that is increasing with TV shows as more content is consumed on small screens, in a distracted state, etc. Overall TV is almost unbearably overstimulating to me these days and I am a little sad about it because I know there are great storylines and actors and cinematographers out there, waiting to be appreciated!

anon

I hadn’t noticed this (I don’t watch a lot of TV lately), but I read someone commenting on the same/similar about the women in and close to the current administration (not to make everything about politics and not saying it’s only on one side) and now I feel very creeped out by the Bratz face look – which I think has as much to do with makeup styles and filters as it does with cosmetic work. Sure every woman gets to make her own choices. But I can’t imagine being a young girl right now and seeing these faces everywhere in the media.

Wink

I have so many thoughts about this and am so thankful that Dahlia shared her feelings and opened the topic. The unfortunate overuse of fillers and Botox by some Hollywood actors (and I think we all know which ones) has made them look so unemotional that watching them act in a role is akin to watching a ventriloquist’s dummy. The words are coming from somewhere but all but the mouth and darting eyeballs is uncannily still. For the most part, I feel compassion for these actors who have probably capitulated to studio demands to continue to look “bankable.” They, and let’s face it, it’s mostly women I’m talking about, are treated more like products. I can understand the “why” of their choice, even if I don’t appreciate it. They likely would not get work otherwise. What truly disturbs me is to see how this has trickled down into society so that now a young woman in her 20s or 30s feels pressured to freeze or fill her face as well, while she is still …so…young! Not long ago my husband and I took our son to Disney World and we were both struck by the same thing. SO many young women, in their early 20s, and young moms of little kids who looked no more than early 30s, all had the same frozen, shiny foreheads and filled faces. They looked weirdly similar, and none of them looked young. Whatever they had done made them look weirdly older, like middle-aged women who’d had a lot of work. It’s almost like the antiaging “preventions” have resulted in another age, not youthful, not elderly, just stasis. I read somewhere recently, an English actor who said they refused to be “embalmed” before they were dead, and this stuck with me. I find it sad that anyone would feel pressured to stop their faces from aging, out of fear of losing their profession or the fear of not being lovable, or simply the fear of death! It’s not always easy to see how my face has changed over the years, but I am committing to it. I want young people (my own child, especially!) to see what a wild, true aging face looks like.

Kika

I’m having a hard time expressing exactly what bothers me about the unmovable faces. The emotion that is supposed to transcend, doesn’t reach me and thus, the series doesn’t touch me. I feel anger mostly, do my daughters only see faces that can’t express feelings? I’m not against botox, but still, you are an actress, how can you freeze what is your expression, your job? I don’t understand it.

dahlia

Friends, I am sitting at my laptop in the dawning day the morning after writing my comment, reading yours, and gently weeping. I gasped aloud as the thoughtful responses to my post kept scrolling on and on as I read. I feel so met by you. Thank you. I have thought about saying this here for years. I didn’t want to yuck Joanna’s yum, as the kids say, yet I feel so fervently about this in my own heart. Thank you for hearing me as intended. I resonated with so much of what you said, and will carry it in my heart as I consider this topic. What a comfort it is in this painful season of the world to be part of such a loving, thoughtful community. Thank you, and thanks to all the folks at CoJ who make this refuge possible for all of us.

Kirby

Have you seen anything with Nicola Walker starring? eg: The Split, Unforgotten, Annika? what about Vera? seriously just ditch American made television and look at what is happening in Sweden, and the UK.

turtle

28 responses to this comment! Seems this hits a nerve with many of us. I’m two months away from turning 69 and feel so fortunate to be married to a Brit who is as perplexed as I am by the importance placed on appearance in the US, particularly on the pursuit of youthful appearance. The commodification of external appearance is one explanation, the fear of aging and death another. Both have the unfortunate consequence of the devaluation of our elders. Such a shame, as aging is such a gift and can be a time of deepening awareness and tenderness towards ourselves and others.

Lexie

I left a comment earlier in the week about Dying for Sex and only mentioned the wardrobe. I am almost done now and wowowowoww it is so much more than sex and cute clothes. Incredibly moving performances by Michelle Williams, Jenny Slate, and Rob Delaney. It’s so good.

Gillian

This! I’ve been waiting for someone on CoJ to talk about Dying for Sex. Female friendship! Heart-wrenching and hopeful performances! Mother-daughter issues! The stress of caregiving! Candid, smart dialogue on death! And just when you think there’s nothing left to cover… a flying penis!

Annie B

This show is stunning! I got through the first five episodes last night and it’s all I can talk about today. The highs and lows, the combination of so much joyful full frontal D + the heaviest of subjects, the care, the friendship, I can’t get enough!!! Truly such a special cast and script (and real life story). I really recommend the Jenny Slate interview in Vulture that just came out, too. She’s brilliant!

Joaquina

Really wanted to like “dying for sex” but could not get into it. I’m just too aware they’re acting? Also the friendship chem between Slate and Williams doesn’t hit for me. Bummer.

ELW

Gotta concur, y’all. Sooooooo good ugh.

Carla

I loved this show, too. I binged all the episodes in a day—I couldn’t stop watching it! The acting, the clothes—so good.

Alexandra

For anyone wanting more Jenny Slate content, cannot recommend listening to her read the audiobook version of her book “Lifeform” enough!!

jennifer

I just started The Pitt and am enjoying it! We’re also watching The Studio, Righteous Gemstones, and rewatching old episodes of 30 Rock.

Lana

As a fellow St. Louis native, Jon Hamm forever holds a special place in my heart. He is the epitome of Midwest perfection.

Joaquina

just don’t look up what he did when he was in a fraternity in college. maybe not perfection but as an adult actor, very enjoyable.

HERE2SAY

I will also watch anything with Jon Hamm. I wish Mad Men was still in production! He could read a Merriam Webster dictionary on youtube and I’d watch every second. My husband is from St Louis as is Jon Hamm and Hamm seems to be a proud St Louisan/Midwesterner so even more reason, in my book, to adore him. Yep, I’m watching that show as soon as it drops.

Joanna Goddard

have you ever seen Jon Hamm and January jones dancing to Bye Bye Birdie? so charming: https://www.reddit.com/r/madmen/comments/1f7yduf/january_jones_jon_hamm_perform_bye_bye_birdie/?rdt=32771

HERE2SAY

Thanks, Jo, for sending! I’ve never seen that clip – that was great! Made me miss Mad Men even more. :-)

Hope you post the jewelry thief article! Def tuning in this wknd and Appletv has had some really interesting stories lately. Highly recommend the series Surface (two seasons so far) and an older Appletv’s series called Defending Jacob.

Heather

I love surface!! This season is so so good.

Shel

Love Jon Hamm. My forever crush besides my husband haha! I will watch anything with him.

Emily

I agree. I’d watch him paint a room. Preferably from the bed in said room.

Nigerian Girl

“Preferably from the bed in said room” 😂🤦‍♀️.

celeste

I love Jon Hamm but we just ended Peacock (Brooklyn 99!) and will start Paramount+ so we can watch “1923” Season 2. Also hooked on The Residence! Agh, so much TV so little time.

Heather

The residence was so much fun!!

Susan

Would love it if you could post a copy of your jewelry thief article!

Joanna Goddard

I was just trying to find it! I really loved it. just for fun, I wrote it as a “how to,” so it’s like “how to be a world-class jewelry thief” and it was a WILD RIDE.

dahlia

Seconded! Please share!
